Camera shutter sound won't shut off - XPERIA X10 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys, for some reason my HK X10i won't shut off the camera sound, even in silent mode. It doesn't even give me the option to shut it when I was choosing the sound effects for the shutter. It shows sound1, sound2, sound3, and that's it. Is there a way to stop the shutter sound?

Hmm, mine has:
Sound 1
Sound 2
Sound 3
Off

But mine doesn't... I was wondering if it's the HK firmware's fault?

In Hong Kong, which I'm assuming it's the same as Japan, silent phone camera shutters are considered illegal, to prevent train perverts from taking upskirt pictures ect.

LMAO! I never thought of those pervs. So is there a solution to getting rid of it?

Yes, rooting your phone will let you enable the "off" option.

No, I figured, that... Just letting you know it doesn't appear somewhere else...

Seeing that there are tons of firmwares out, which one should I root to? Does it affect the SEUS automatic update process? What are the risks of rooting?

I have a UK phone and on the stock camera there is no option to turn the shutter sound off. I also have the Vignette app from the market and that gives you the option to turn it off. So rather than rooting, how about try an app first?

I have it too, but it still won't shut up.
Edit: Also, which version would enable the "auto SMS/MMS setting?"

I tried turning off the shutter sound in Vignette but it still makes noise (UK)

UK GENERIC has no shutter sound option

I apologise to you for the misleading infor I was at work yesterday and didn't play around to see if the Vignette sound actually turned it off I just knew that I'd seen it on there. Tried it today and you are absolutely right, it doesn't turn it off.
Note to self... check it out before you spout it out. Sorry!

To clarify. UK generic has, a no shutter sound option. (Grammar goes a long way).
Go to camera -> press menu -> advanced settings -> shutter sound -> press off.

@twentybenson
to make the shutter sound on UK Xperia X10i mute, you can do:
1. allow installation of applications from unknown sources;
2. install and run UniversalAndroot.apk to root your phone (whatever it is locked to a mobile network or unlocked);
3. install and run Root_Explorer_v2.10.apk;
4. allow Root Explorer root access by SuperUser;
5. go to folder /system/media/audio/camera and ensure that folder is "rw" (read and write) and not "ro" (read only) by checking on top of Root Explorer (click on the right hand button to switch mode);
6. change sound files in sound1, sound2 and sound3 folders. It is suggested to use the no_sound.ogg file available in the sound0 folder and copying it across the other sound folders to replace the existing audio files but keeping their original name to ensure the andoid system does not crash;
7. exit Root Explorer and check that the sound is mute on the camera now;
8. uninstall Root Explorer;
9. unroot your mobile using Universal Androot (it will remove Super User application);
10. uninstall Universal Androot.
you can find UniversalAndroot.apk and Root_Explorer_v2.10.apk in the following package:
rapidshare.com/files/416177666/NoSoundPack.zip
MD5: 76BABE2867C994E4B69DB11F093230A4

not all the firmwares allow the camera shutter to be turned off, when i was on HK024 firmware that option was not available, but now on Generic026 firmware i have the option to turn the shutter sound off

You gotta debrand to some other firmware around the world.
HK has a law that there must be a shutter sound on all phones so that people dont take pictures of random people and post em on the interwebs... or some other intention.

[Q] How to disable camera shutter sound?

Is it possible to disable the camera shutter sound on the SGS2? It's very loud and kind of annoying.
I'm going to a wedding at the weekend and it would be nice to be able to take pictures without pissing off the entire church.
Put the phone in silent mode when using the camera that should do the trick without any trickery
Silent mode doesn't make any difference, it's still the same.
Anyone know if there's a good camera app without shutter sound I can use instead?
Even when i have it on silent mode, it still makes the shutter sound
There is no setting to disable it in camera settings anymore?
You could do it on SGS...
Try turning media volume down
You need root
Go to /system/media/ui/
Then delete the files got to do with the camera including the shutter

Yup, someone wanna chuck us the camera apk? Should be possible to fix it that way..
Or, as someone said, try renaming the sound file in media to whatever.ogg.OLD
I think all UK phones have to comply with anti-voyeurism laws which is why all phones there have the camera shutter no matter what. If you have rooted your phone I think you could easily delete or modify the shutter sound though...

From the code, I see there should be a setting to enable or disable autofocus sound.
Can you please confirm if this exists before I go much further into this. Usually you tap menu, or press a settings button on-screen in camera to get some options.
Looks like it can be disabled.

OK. You can try pulling the APK, then removing the file in res/raw/. Delete the ogg file with the obvious name like AutoFocus.ogg (not got the file to hand)
Back up the old one before doing this! Then replace the file on the device with this one. Reboot, see if it works. If it doesn't and camera doesn't appear, then you need to restore the backup and reboot again. That should fix it
If it crashes when focussing, we need to replace the OGG with an "empty" ogg, but then re-sign the APK, which will involve editing packages.xml
while were on the subject, is it possible to remove the parental control set in place, that prevents the camera from being opened if the battery is >15%, and where it kills your music, when you open the camera? i will personally donate $25 dollars if you did that. and forever praise you as the best developer in the world
(very serious about the donation tho)

Do you mean the recording sound the device emits when going into Camera mode or the audio capture of the video?

The camera sound files are stored inside a system folder on your phone. I was going to say to check to see if the files are there and play them to ensure they aren't corrupt. However, if you are not rooted, you may not be able to access them.
If you reflash your current stock rom or update your rom to the latest version from Samsung, I believe that can fix your problems.

How can it be corrupted mate if I didn't do anything to my phone (Just regular use). Previously I also had a problem with OTA update and I needed to clear the data of Software Update for it to run again.
I'm really starting to believe that this is really a buggy piece of software (Android or maybe TW of Samsung)... Even the Accuweather widget is not auto refreshing if I restarted the phone and I need to clear again the data for it to auto refresh again or run normally.
Sorry I'm just frustrated
After doing everything I could (Except the Factory Reset), my camera shutter sound is still not working.
I tried to Clear the data of camera app, restart the phone, shutdown and reopen the phone, shutdown and remove the battery then reopen the phone, tried to uninstall some apps I recently installed, and still no shutter sound
I'm about to try today the "wipe cache partition" but first I tried again to shutdown and reopen my phone and guess what, now my shutter sound is back!
Only difference is currently I dont have any internet connection on my phone (No Wifi / Mobile data). Weird! :silly:

Everything stock mate... Everything is working fine now... I guess this is a Touchwiz problem or worst this is an android thing. I searched the net and there are others experiencing this using different devices... Maybe this is an android bug, I'm not sure as it hard to replicate this problem and theres no accurate solution... :silly:
Check this if you are rooted
How to enable on/off button for Shutter sound:
Edit /system/csc/feature.xml with text editor of choice.
Add following lines:
<!-- Enable/disable the camera shutter sound -->
<CscFeature_Camera_ShutterSoundMenu>true</CscFeature_Camera_ShutterSoundMenu>
Reboot, Voila, now you can enable/disable shutter sound from camera menu. (I'm on BLG8)
Credits to PaWill
I'm also having this same problem...
Let me start from the beginning...
I got the phone from Vodafone Portugal. It came with the ICS rom, but right away I updated with the first polish JB rom. Also put root on it.
I'm constantly updating roms, so I tried most new roms that were releasing, mostly unbranded roms, from France, UK, India, etc... I did some dirty flashes but sometimes I flashed from the ground, full wipe...
Also, never used a custom rom for example...
I don't remember when did it happen, but somehow, camera stop making sounds, shutter sound and selection sounds... I also lost the sound setting from camera menu options...
I never, but never modified that aspect. And with a option do enable/disable sound shutter, why would I need to disable sound shutter with another method?!?!
A few weeks ago, I was on XELLA, and I added that camera line on the feature.xml file. No sounds I got...
By the way, the camera sounds are on a folder inside /system/ and they work perfectly , they are not broken
Today, I updated, dirty flash over XELLA, the new vodafone rom XERM2. I was with no hope to get the sounds...
I remember to check feature.xml on the system/csc folder to see if it was there, but the file was removed. I had a couple of modifications (including the line for the shutter sounds). So I restored an old backup that I had from the file. I set permissions and reboot.
I got a half surprise, guess what, I regain the Camera Sound settings from camera menu options.
The bad thing is that I still can't get any shutter or any other sounds from the camera app
Any ideas?!?! Please!!! I want Camera sounds back!!! Need help please!!!

Cerberus Caused Loss of Touch Sounds

Hi I installed Cerberus (remote locating software) for my S3. I have CF root, running on stock firmware LG8.
I used a zip to flash Cerberus (from the website) using CWM so I could get extra features which I did about 6 days ago. I tried to use Cerberusapp.com to test if everything is working today and it wasn't responding as it should. The feature I used was take an immediate pic using front camera.
I exited from the webapp and then tried to use the camera and it would open but then I was met with an error message saying Camera: failed or something similar to that and then the camera app would close.
I restarted the phone and camera was working fine. But now the keypad tones when you press back button, menu button, or when you swipe to unlock screen have disappeared.
Loudspeaker works when I play music and other things. Earpiece works when I make calls.
But the splish/splash sounds won't work at all. Also, when I boot the phone up, the sound the accompanies the Samsung animation boot logo doesn't play either.
How do I rectify this? I don't want to reflash with stick f/w through Odin if it can be avoided and if there is of course a simple fix.
Thanks
at a guess the app disables sounds so as not to alert the thief that you are taking photo of them. I would imagine the app developer is your best bet for a solution, but check and see if in system/media the app might of places a .nomedia file or some such disabling file

I think I'll have to e-mail the support team because it doesn't seem like it's intentional.
The keypad tones and sounds have gone but the shutter sound when taking a photo is still there. Also, why would it affect the sound on the boot animation?
Using rootexplorer I've looked through the system/media and other folders but there's no sign of anything that shouldn't be there.
It was all working as expected before this little error occurred. When taking pics using Cerberus the camera wouldn't make a sound but the key press sounds would still make a sound.
Anyway, thanks for your help, I'll give the developer a shout and if nothing can be resolved I might just reflash and do it all over again.

[APP](Root Req)Viper4Android Sound

Just wanted to post that I have installed Viper4Android and it works beautifully on my rooted S5. This app is the #1 reason I root.
This app will change the way you think about sound (seriously). Every time I demo the difference to someone by turning it on and off they immediately ask me to install it for them.
Installed using directions by @docnok63, paraphrased below for your convenience. I have only tested this app on my rooted T-mobile S5, and only with spotify (it's the only player I use). Of course you should always backup first and only you are responsible for what you do to your device.
1. Ensure you are rooted. From this point on, grant all superuser requests.
2. Download ViPER4Android FX. Get the latest version under the "Android FX" heading.
3. Extract the 4.x .apk from the zip. If you haven't already, smart-install Busybox from the play store.
4. Move the 4.x .apk to root system/app using a root-friendly file browser of your choice. Reboot to reset permissions.
5. Launch the app (from your app drawer). Grant root to let it install drivers. I've always gone with super audio quality; I suppose it's up to you. It may ask you if it can modify some files to disable power saving...just let it happen. :good: Reboot again.
6. Go straight to settings/sound/music effects (at the bottom) and toggle Viper4Android as default.
7. Open root system/build.prop using a file explorer and text editor with root access. You change three lines of code as follows. Some may already have been changed.
Code:
Ipa.decode=true should read Ipa.decode=false
tunnel.decode=true to tunnel.decode=false
lpa.use-stagefright=true to lpa.use-stagefright=false
8. Save the file and reboot once more. Open the Viper4Android app and have at the sound settings; play around until you find what works for you (just make sure to check "Enable" :highfive. You can edit the settings as you have music playing. When you get it where you want it, toggle the enable button and see how far you've come.
You can explore the main app thread here for some ideas on customization.
All credit due to @viper520, @zhuhang, and @docnok63.
All I did was paraphrase. Hope this helps someone!

I have not been able to get this to work with the stock app on any version of KK but it works fine with Poweramp. Just have all EQ and processors in Poweramp turned off and in Poweramp settings/audio/advanced tweaks make sure everything is unchecked.

WOW...it works here for me. At first it didn't. I looked for updates and it offered v2.3.3.0 Installed that and it's really noticeable with my ear buds. This is with Google music player. I have PowerAmp premium too. Have not tested on that but it for sure works with the latest APK I referenced and it is installed as a system app. One of those build.prop edits was already set while the other two needed to be changed, just an FYI. If you aren't on the latest APK, update. I am on the latest update of Alliance ROM here on my T Mobile S5 variant....fyi.

It's in system folder. You need to use an appropriate method of editing that allows you to change from read only to read write. Also for me you have to be running 2.3.3.0 version of Viper. And finally, at least for me, I set this up and it runs until I also use the app Poweramp. Seems as soon as I use PowerAmp with the equalizer on, it breaks the functionality within 2 seconds of starting any song. If you use the menu function while running the Viper app, look at driver staus which not only shows the version but if you are running a song it will say yes to processing which verifies the app is running. (build prop editor by JRummy Apps in Playstore is free and works great) (Of course Root Explorer is my all time favorite, paid app that has a ton of functions, including editing)
So it didn't work for me, unless deleted the mod and installed everything from scratch as a normal app instead of a system one. To make it work with Poweramp, had to enable " compatible mode", add "music fx" button to "tone/vol" screen and turn it on. Now it works.
Anyone here having trouble with signal after flashing this mod?
Or is it just me

Any way to bypass Android EQ when using UAPP's Bit-Perfect mode?

Hi all, first time posting here. I created a post about my issue on Reddit, but someone recommended I ask here. I own an LG V60 and I love it. I regularly listen to music via UAPP running in Bit-Perfect mode. The thing is, it bypasses the UAPP EQ and other settings, but it does NOT bypass Android's EQ under the phone settings. The EQ faders are not greyed out, meaning, I can slide any of the frequency faders and it will affect sound. I don't have this issue when connecting an external DAC dongle such as the iBasso DC02. When I use the DC02, I can slide the EQ faders and it WON'T affect the sound at all, which is what I want.
Is there a way to make the phone detect its internal Quad DAC as an external one? Better yet, is there a way to tweak the settings, even by using ADB Studio (which I don't have any experience with) to make it so that whenever I connect my IEMs DIRECTLY to the phone, that it will bypass the phone's EQ? What am I missing?
Any help will be greatly appreciated!!
You can uninstall the EQ if rooted.
Will it definitely not brick my phone? I'm asking since the equalizer is a system app.
Also, what's the safest best way to root my Tmobile V60?

The rooting of LG V60 T-Mobile is well documented in this forum. As for the safety of removing EQ from your phone, rest assured it is totally safe. I have the exact same phone that you have and it is rooted and without EQ (and some other bloatwares).
FYI, EQ is just an app on V60. Only difference is it operates on root-level but is not a system file.

Thanks for providing the info! I'm a bit scared to tell you the truth! Looks a bit intimidating, but I'll have to give it a try I guess.
Just out of curiosity, were you able to hear a difference in sound quality with EQ uninstalled? Also, do you think it'd be possible to remove the LG 3D Sound Engine?
You won't be able to remove the LG 3D sound engine. Only EQ can be uninstalled.
Here is what I have on my LG V60 (audio-wise):
1. Phone is rooted. Magisk in installed.
2. Audio Modification Library installed as a Magisk module.
2. Viper 4 is installed with Dolby settings as convolver. I am using Viper 4 2.7.1.0.
3. DTS:X is installed as a Magisk module. DTS:X disables LG 3D sound.
RESULT: LG V60 sounds phenomenal! It sounds as good as an expensive dedicated media player.
You must use a good earphone/headphone to truly appreciate the sound quality. I use Shure SE 846 and AKG N5005.

Most definitely! I own a pair of Focal Elex and soon will buy Final Audio A8000

Thank you for providing even MORE info!!! I'll wait until they approve me for access to the two Google Drive files. I just backed up my data, so now I'm excited to do this
If you follow all the instructions, there is no way that anything will go wrong. I know that initially it appears overwhelming but it really is not. The bootloader unlock and rooting should not take more than 20 minutes (for a beginner). If I had to do it (being familiar with the process), the whole thing could be done in 5 minutes.
No need to wait for the Google drive validation, I have attached the files here. After decompressing, you will end up with two files: (1) DTSUltra.zip and (2) Dolby Pro Logic II.irs. Do not decompress DTSUltra.zip. It is for Magisk to install in the native form. The second file i.e., Dolby Pro Logic should be copied in the kernel folder of Viper 4 (with root access). Once copied, just open Viper and choose it under "Convolver" option.
Please note that Viper 4 is an APK. So install it as any Android app. However, it does require root access to function.
As always, people in XDA are here to help!

Thank you SO MUCH!!! Just to be on the safe side, I saved my backup on my micro SD card. I can then root the phone and when all is done, including the audio tweaks you did, I can then reinsert the micro SD card and recover my backup files, right?
Also, I've taken a quick glance at the guide for rooting the V60, so in theory I should just follow the OP's first 2 messages? I don't want to get lost by reading through all of the comments only to make a mistake. Did you just go along with his first 2 messages?
And does rooting affect security updates in any way?
You are correct. The first two messages are all you need. Essentially the first step is to unlock the bootloader and then root access the phone -- just like the messages.
You will continue to get the Android security updates.
Forgot to mention: Your approach to restore the data files are correct.
I really appreciate it as I was considering also buying myself a V50s or G8X simply because of the sound quality. Now, knowing the V60 audio properties can be tweaked by rooting, I'm super excited to try this. It's midnight here in NY but I'll most definitely do it over the weekend. You might see several messages from me as I go over the process.
Thanks a million!
I have LG V50 that is audio tuned by Meridian. It is fine earlier but does not compare to V60. One of the main reasons is that V60 uses a new generation of ESS audio chip. In addition, the Meridian tuning screws up any fine tuning. The only advantage that V50 has over V60 is that it can natively play DSD files as well as the DTS built-in. But the DTS:X Ultra (that you can install by rooting) is many times better than the one in V50.
So when all said and done, you will end up with an LG v60 that has DTS:X with other audio tuning that create a blissful sound to enjoy!
And the battery life of LG V60 is outstanding! No dedicated Android media player (with wifi) can match it.
You are very welcome to reach out whenever needed.
P.S.: You should get this software that will help you uninstall many bloatwares (including EQ). All you need is to have the USB Debugging mode enabled on the phone when connected.
Ok, so I enabled USB debugging mode for file transfer, and I did the volume down/power off thing and repeatedly tapped the volume up button. Screen is now off but can't see the device under QFIL, it says No Ports Available however I see it listed under Device Manager, under Portable Devices. I did the step about 15 times maybe?
You have to install the driver for the item in device manager. I will post the driver if you don’t have it.
Here is the link to drivers.
Just download the entire folder and save it on your PC after decompressping the files (since Google drive compresses the files before transferring). Now when the V60 appears in the device manager after your phone goes dark (which is EDL mode), update the driver of the phone entry by browsing it to the driver directory you just downloaded. It will install the driver and then it will appear under QFIL.
Sameway when you go to root and enter in fastboot mode, your device manager will show your phone but you will have to update its driver for fastboot. Just like before, update the driver by directing it to that driver folder you downloaded. That’s it.

Here's the thing, the device used to appear under Other Ports saying something like QT-usb etc, but now it's under portable devices with the name LG V60. I can't recreate the situation to get the long USB name like before. I think I have the right driver, but you can still post it just in case. I tried on my brother's PC and was able to see the long USB name and tried to update the driver but Windows says it won't let me update it or that the driver that's already installed is the best one to date or something? I also see an unknown USB device (Device Descriptor Request Failed) and I don't even know what that means.
I have posted the drivers. Just refresh the page.
