U20i Bricked (Probably) - Sony Ericsson XPERIA X10 Mini

Hey there. I rooted my x10 mini pro today, worked like a charm. But then I started (Quite stupidly) downloading a load of root-orientated apps from the market and I think one may have flashed my phone... But not properly. (Yeah I know, I should pay more attention.)
Anyway, the point is, my phone's kinda bricked. Instead of the standard homescreen; when I turn it on it's just some bad quality blueish background... with no buttons or widgets... And the fonts are now twice the original size. So there's no way of getting to any apps or settings etc. Also, on startup I get a few messages saying some processes have died a horrible death and the only option is to "force close" such processes. I once miraculously managed to get the homescreen back up briefly and stumble my way to the settings to do a reset, seemed to be working but I realised that when my phone booted back up it had just the same problems.
Yes, I've tried using PC Companion but the useless piece of [Insert profanity] claims it can't find the update and patronizingly asks me if I'm connected to the internet. Which I quite frankly am, so it can shove it's error code up it's bumhole. Both the "Repair" and "Update" options don't work.
So, the point of my rambling is that it'd be very kind of anyone who bothered to read all that to inform me of any way of doing a force restore on my x10 through some other method than PC Companion... Possibly through the Android SDK commands via command prompt like the methods used to actually root this thing.
I apologize for probably not making any sense, but it's 3:20 am and I've been trying to fix my phone for 5 hours and have seriously considered sticking my head in the oven.
Oh, if it helps, another way I might have bricked it is by following forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=743800 without knowing much about that ADB stuff. I know, call me an idiot, but I usually get out of these situations on my own. Wow. Haven't posted on a forum for ages.
Well ignoring my apparent agression, any help would be really appreciated and I'd owe you a beer.

Also, it's worth mentioning that I've tried flashing with Omnius and DavinciTeam to fix the problem and neither worked, but then again I don't know much about how to flash.
Well anyway I'm going to sleep now, had enough of staying awake staring at overly large fonted errors on my phone. Did that make sense? I'll be up in... 11 hours maybe. Then I'll see if any kind person has replied, and give them a cookie for the effort.
I talk nonsense when I'm tired, I really do.

You could try to 'debrand' your phone and then use the repair button @ pc companion. Look for the debrand topic started by SaintyUK.

Thanks for the reply, but I cannot do that as it requires the phone to be in usb debug mode... I can't get it into that mode because I can't get into settings on my phone. Unless you know of any external way of getting the phone into debug mode?

i don't know how to get your telephone in usb debug mode.
Which firmware are you running atm?
And which root method did you use etc.
Just try to provide as much info as possible, might help other people brainstorm aswell.
You could try a reinstall of pc companion and try to repair it after that.

Usb debug mode is needed for any ADB commands (Which you need for debranding and the method of rooting I used.)
I used the method I found here: android.doshaska.net/x10miniroot to root the phone.
I have tried to reinstall pc companion, 3 times now, and I still get the same error. If you like I could take a screenshot of the error?
Thanks for the reply.
Edit: Oh, and I'm not sure what firmware version I'm using. It was fully updated recently and was running Android 1.6 if that helps?

I had a similar problem with my PC Companion when I bricked my Mini Pro, it just would not download the firmware to reflash it. I wonder if there is a way to trick it into looking on your computer for it like when you jailbreak an iPhone? I ended up using DaVinci to reflash mine, it cost 10 Euro but worked a treat.

Yeah Jailbreaking is incredibly easy compared to rooting, but that's 'cause it's been around much longer I remember in the early days with my iPod touch 1G before the Appstore even existed, the Jailbreak method was just as difficult as rooting.
Another reason why it's easier to Jailbreak is because iTunes lets you choose the file to restore from (Common method of Jailbreaking) while PC Companion doesn't, as you pointed out.
Maybe there's away to edit the hosts file in windows so that PC Companion looks somewhere else for the file (So you can choose a flashed firmware) rather than the Sony Ericsson servers. I don't know xD Just guessing.
Anyway, I'd prefer not to pay out so I'd rather not use DaVinci. Omnius works in pretty much the same way, and it's free, but gives me errors.

I really am not sure if this works or helps, but pressing the HOME and Power Button togethar is "supposed" to Hard Reset the x10 mini. Might help.

I've rooted my phone the same and debranded. I meant that i dont know how to get your phone into USB debug mode in any other then through settings.
I'm kinda out of idea's and since there is so little response i doubt anyone knows what to do at the moment. So i suggest you provide as much information as possible so all those who are trying to help can brainstorm together .
As it seems, DaVinci could work, so at least you have some sort of backup if everything else fails. i don't think your telephone is completely lost anyway, you can get the phone to boot right? Only you can't actually navigate to.. anything/anywhere on the phone UI right?
You can provide a SS, it might help^^

I'm not sure I can think of any more information to provide, but if I manage to find out anything (Like that firmware version), I'll post it.
And yes that is a good point, atleast there's a method of restoring if all else fails, which is good.

Yeah that's right. Well, almost, I can get into the notification tray... But there's only one notification that appears there, which is about Data roaming, so I can get into data roaming settings through that but no other settings
It may be worthwhile to point out again that the font sizes seem unusually large... May be a pointer to what went wrong?
Well thanks everyone anyway, I'll keep you updated.

Right, I gave in, using DavinciTeam's software and I've bought 10 credits.
I thought I'd post this incase someone else has had the same problem and didn't want to pay, it gave me some nice details:
ChipClass: MSM7227
Model: U20
Cert: 0001 / Red
OTP: 0001 / Red
CDA: 1238-0199
SW Version: 1235-3411 1.2.A.1.174
Language: WORLD-1-8 1.2.A.1.174
So I'm guessing my firmware version is 1.2.A.1.174
I'll tell you how the restore goes
Edit: Heh... Probably shouldn't have given you that IMEI number. Just incase. It's removed now.

Awwww you removed it? missed it by that much then!
And yes, I'd be interested to know how the DaVinci reset goes

In the lockscreen can you access the service menu?: you can access this menu by pressing, menu, back, back, menu, back, menu, menu, back.
Hopefully the restore goes well. Next time leave your phone in USB debug mode

DaVinci worked a charm. No problems at all. And very quick (Infact it finished just after my last post, but then I had to go out :L) But now it's not rooted ): Ah well, rooting isn't difficult I'll do it again right now. Anyway, so glad to have my phone working again xD rooted or not. Cost me £8.59 but was worth it. I only wish that there was a free clone of the DavinciTeam services. Well there is, but I mean one that worked xD
For anyone that needs to use DavinciTeam's services; there's no x10 mini pro option on the site, but x10 mini works fine (Even though the firmware version says E20i rather than U20i, but that didn't seem to matter).
@Rylo: Haha yes, I'll remember to do that next time I did last time... but then accidentally disabled it -.- oh well.
Thankyou so much for your help everyone. I owe everyone who replied a beer. Especially bingobadgo, for pointing out I could use DavinciTeam's services, and Rylo for generally being very helpful and replying to nearly everything xD
Probably wouldn't have a working phone right now if it weren't for you guys
Now, to Root again, and this time I'll be more careful xD

Sweetest thing I heard all day
Good to hear the phone is up and running. I'd flip like a turtle if that happened to me, considering I almost survive office hours on the phone!

*Hands Confused_Geek a beer*
Yes, it's very nice to have my phone running again xD And haha yup, smartphone's can be great distractions at work ;P
Anyway, phone's rooted again, any root apps you'd reccommend? And also, how do you enable the ability to install any app on the market regardless of what my network wants me to install? xD I thought rooting did that automatically, I was wrong

short reply, i'm in a hurry:
Marketacces/Marketfix
or
APKtor/APtoide, i thnk this program is for pirated APK's but it can also be used to install apps that aren't available since the x10 got a low res.
You'll have to use google to find repo's tho'
rooted apps i recommend: advanced taskkiller, root explorer, titanium backup (install busybox from titanium if it doesnt work, *help>install busybox), appbrain+fastweb installer, picme and shootme (for screenshots), Pingchat (you can message to android, blackberry and iphone users, www.pingchat.com, needs interwebz) last but not least >> XDA app << hmm the last few aren't rooted apps xD just regular apps ;p but still good! oh and install handcent sms for texting.
have fun!

Solution was right under your nose if you followed the instructions properly.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=749438

Thankyou Rylo for your post and PM, been downloading loads of rooted apps with APKtor
Do you need that Marketfix? Cause MarketAccess works fine... Though I can't seem to find the benefit of changing countries at the moment, that's not quite what I wanted so I guess Marketfix does what I wanted? Unless there's a country that has access to ALL apps?
Thanks anyway, those... repositories you mentioned in the PM are great Saved me some money on some apps Like Genoid (Great btw, I have nearly every sega megadrive game on my phone now )

I tried that, several times, didn't work for me. Those key combinations did nothing and I tried following the rest of the instruction regardless of that fact, but still came up with the same errors. Maybe that fix only works with specific PC Companion errors? I did look around everywhere before I posted this article, incase you think otherwise

[Q] <Q> How to root Sharp Sh 12-c

Hi everyone,
I googled every conner on internet but could not find any thread showing how to root sharp sh-12c. has anyone rooted the phone ?
thanks
I would really like to know if it can be done as well. I live in Australia and now I really regret getting this phone. So use to a rooted phone. There's just too much bloat on this Docomo device. Because of the locked nand I don't think this phone will ever see root.
we are in same place mate. i live in aus as well. this phone is really annoying with junk japanese applications that's never used.
Hope someone will find a way to root it as well. Want to get rid of the bloat on this and replace a lot of the crappy Sharp system apps like the calendar and calculator.
Have any of you guys got any of the built in market links (specifically Taiko no Tatsujin and Katamari) to work?
you are not alone, i am the user of sh-12c in hong kong ....and search the internet night and day for the solution...
and i found this hope .... h t t p : / /i.imgur.com/3daGV.jpg

how to get root SH-12C
Hi, I'm goroh_kun from japan.
If you can get own risk, and don't care about losing the maker warranty,
I can help you.
But I can't talk the security hole in public, because of legal problem in japan.
If you really want to get root, please DM me, thanks.
I also get alot of reboots on this phone as well. Any one else with this phone having the same problem or is it just me. I think the problem has something to do with the phones data connection cause this only happens when I'm out and about. Not when I'm using wifi. But to be honest I have know idea what's causing it to reboot. It's not caused by some app that I've installed cause the reboots even happens after a fresh reset of phone.
Giiar, try disabling auto 3g/gsm and leave it just on 3g.
Apparently it reboots (sounds like a bug) when it switches between 3g and gsm.
i really regret that bough this phone. the battery runs out of power very fast. nothing special on it.
I guess we need some time to familiar with this JAPANESE Andriod. It works quite differently as compare with other Andriod.(I'd used about 20 models since this year) Lots of tiny enhancements are quite meaningful and interesting. (Manner mode, Veilview(avoid others beside you seeing your screen), extra lock screen for your phone book, answering machine function, etc)
All and all, this is a TRUE 3D phone that can take 3D photo and video for my family and friends. All people around are envy on this and actually it isn't really expensive. I consider the BEST phone on the earth at the time being. (other 3D phones design are truly ugly when compare with this SHARP that 100% made in Japan) I'll not try another non-3D Android from now on...I guess.
Battery is truly the bad thing....I manage to solve this problem with an external battery pack 4800mAh....cheap and good enough, can charge other devices too. (e.g. give a hand to your iPhone friends around when needed..)
Re-booting issue maybe related to your SIM card, I learnt this from Taiwanese users and I'd replaced a new SIM for same reason. Working perfectly for few days from then.
All these are my own experience and hope most of us will enjoy using this phone!

Well I've been keeping it on GSM and only manually turning it to 3g when Browsing. 2 days now and no reboots which is great. Thanks for trying to help. I actually saw this solution on another site and there they mentioned that this is the only known fix for the rebooting issue.

General tips:
-Are you sure that WIFI and GPS are off when you don't use them?
-Have you tried a task killer to check if any unneeded apps are running?
-Have you tried to run on GSM only, to save battery?
-Have you tried "bump charging"? Supposed to increase battery life 50-100%: http://www.gizmocrunch.com/mobile/6754-htc-sensation-evo-3d
Don't have this phone, these are just generic tips that improve other androids stand by time.
Now my phone is on a continuous loop. Doesn't even get into the the screen where they ask for the pin code. Ran into so much issues with this phone. Can't even work out how to do a hard reset so I can get the phone to boot. Any ideas or help would be greatly appreciated
Thanks in advance.
could anyone share the method here if you successfully rooted this phone???

hey great info on the power issues and rebooting ive had the same issues my sh-12c turned on and off about 3 times in 5 mins and the placed it did that was while i was traveling in and out of 'dead spots' for signal so hopefully that will help.
Good info on the bump charging i was about to order 5 spare batterys and charge them all lol ill put that on hold for a while and see how this goes prob still need one or two more tho just in case.
Im also looking to root it but im a bit nervous on giving it a go without any confirmations can it toataly brick the phone if it goes wrong or is it quiet safe usually like apples jailbreaks where i could just reinstall the firmware? im very tempted to just click and see what happens lol

Just wondering, were you running anything or recently installed something when it locked up? Have you tried taking out the battery, sim and sd card?
I've tried several combinations (like vol +, vol -, etc) myself when I got the phone, but couldn't get into recovery mode. Hope someone finds out how and lets us know.
I haven't had any issues with mine so far, apart from the bloat, I'm really happy with the phone. Love the 3D on it. Encoding lots of stuff for it.

[Q] So I'm finally about to root my phone, a few questions!

I'm finally rooting my phone after months of messing about waiting for an unlock
My phone is international model i9300 and I've been reading this guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1695238
Looks really good, well detailed should be very easy with the help of chainfire!
But I've still got a few questions
1) I think I can't back up my phone until it's rooted to get access to the system files, am I right in thinking when I'm rooted I can use CWM to make a full back up of the phone?
2) Once it's rooted what is a thing that you must not do? The phone was expensive and as these threads may be annoying to all of you I just need to know before I do anything silly so apologies for all the topics
3) I'm going to wait until JB is released for official ROMs, when it comes to flashing a new ROM do I need to unroot the device?
4) Can I remove bloatware with just the standard root? The amount is ridiculous, it fills up 2 whole pages of apps and 95% of them I haven't used and don't plan on using, ever. I'm sure if I ever needed to there will be an app for it
5) any other advice on keeping my phone safe would be great, I am just really really cautious with this kind of stuff lol. Technology is really fussy I don't want to brick my phone
Thanks to everybody who posts, you guys have helped me so much since I joined and I really appreciate it

Answer 1: Check the link in my description (Win 8 -help) and download the adb executables. Then (Using Windows 7/8) Press and hold shift + Right mouse button in the folder and open cmd.
Once in cmd type:
Code:
adb start-server
adb devices (To check if your phone is connected properly)
adb backup -f %Userprofile%\Desktop\ADBackup\backup.ab -apk -nosystem -noshared -all
That will backup your user apps, incase you do do something wrong
Answer 2: Yes, there are a few things you shouldn't do;
Flash a ROM without making a backup
Deleting partitons in the phones' root.
Deleting system apps (APKs), when you don't know what they do, or even what they are.
Flashing a ROM/kernel, that wasn't made for your phone.
Overclocking/undervolting your phone too much.
And there are a couple more, but I don't want to waist your time ^^
Answer 3: JB is already released. No, you don't have to unroot your phone, before flashing. In fact, you probably can't, because you need the recovery program, to flash the ROM.
Answer 4: Don't flash bad stuff, don't install apps, that are reported (i.e. viruses) don't flash ROMs and kernels, that aren't for your device. And last but not least: Only use Odin, if you really have to!
Hope I could help!

1) You are right
2) Do not unroot
3) Official JB is already available. Flashing using odin doesn't required unroot. Update via OTA or kies required unroot.
4) Read, read and read is the best way to prevent bricking your device.

If you want a Jellybean rom with bloat removed, then download Checkrom http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1738527 . It's a stock samsung rom, bloat taken out, rooted, and is ready for if you wanted themeing etc..
In his kitchen app (that comes with the rom) you can find a package with ALL the removed bloat for you to download and install (ota) but he's also separated them so you can download just the ones you want. Also in the kitchen you will find tweaks for changing the notification drawer toggles, changing the theme, different modems, kernels etc... And check in the kitchen now and again for any updates to the rom (as and when samsung release them)
It's all there and very noob friendly. It's the smoothest most stable stock rom I've tried.
So root your phone using odin (easiest method by far), pay for titanium backup and back up your apps, boot into recovery and make a nandroid, move them onto you exSd or computer, wipe your phone, install checkrom, download titanium again and restore your apps from it.
That's a good start for you, EVERYTHING you need to know has been asked and answered before, so just google or search XDA, it's all still relevant, and you won't go wrong.
I'm going to root it now, seems pretty straight-forward but I'll let you know!
Now I will be shortly rooted what's the best anti-theft to use?
edit: wow... that was possible the easiest thing I have ever done lol, i was expecting it to be hard but it's literally selecting a file and pressing start. it's so much easier then jailbreaking (easy as hell but this tops it for sure)
Just done a CWM back up I didnt expect it to take so long haha
In my opinion, Cerberus is the best anti-theft app out there. You can use for a week as a free trial, I'll bet you're gonna buy it after 15 minutes.
Note that no anti-theft protection will prevent a thief from actually using your phone. Within like 2 minutes of Googling, the thief knows that he can use Download mode to overwrite the firmware (including the "anti theft" app) and 5 minutes later he has done it.
I use one such app (Watchdroid) to find my phone when I have misplaced it and for family members to be able to locate my position through an sms in case of personal distress.

I guess it just depends on who finds it, there should be a password for download mode that can't be overwritten

And Avast! Anti Virus has a lockdown feature, which forces GPS, WiFi/Data and number forwarding (Root), so my phone is pretty safe
I've just installed avast - cheers!
What happens if the SIM is replaced?
and how do I track the phone if it gets lost/stolen?
also in my notification bar it says "avast mobile security is protecting you" i renamed the app for obvious reasons like it suggested. it's pretty stupid if the app renames its self if only reported lost/stolen

Check the anti-theft settings in the app. It lets you set up trusted numbers, so you can control your phone remotely, and you can set things up, like force GPS and Data on, that way the phone can tell you it's position..

I've done all that, I've enabled anti-theft stealth mode where it states it will remain hidden after my next reboot.
I rebooted the phone but to no avail. It keeps showing in the notification bar and anti-theft seems useless, I've set up a pin but anybody who saw my phone would see the app straight away and would just use google on "how to remove avast samsung galaxy s3"
i don't think a thief could do it themselves but any idiot can search keywords into google to find a solid result

Yes, but not everyone knows what the avast! symbol look like, do they? I doubt you're going to find an XDA-Member would have stolen your phone, it will probably be an Asi, or someone really retarded.
And anyways, they'll get frightened enough, when the phone rights junk to the SD, locks itself up and sounds the siren, with a personal "greeting"..
Give it a go, if your phone gets stolen, there's always the police, they'll (hopefully) help you But that's worst-case-scenario..

Anyone with google and the least bit of experience or interest will just reflash the stock Samsungrom anyway, rendering all and any (including Samsung's own) anti-theft utterly useless.
(In many cases thiefs steal to buy drugs, the dealer will certainly know someone to "freshen" up the phone.
It's very useful for finding the phone though if you have misplaced it =)

So you're saying if I left my phone on the bus or something and somebody picked it up and decided to be a thief they automatically are casual drug users who know dodgy people, all because they found my phone?
I don't see how it could be useful for finding a "misplaced" phone, what would you class as misplaced? If I left the phone under my bed or something and "misplaced" it surely avast! isn't going to show a picture of inside my house?

How to root Sony Xperia Z2 5.1.1 23.4.A.1.232

I own a Xperia Z2 D6502 with android 5.1.1 and build number 23.4.A.1.232 which I would like to root. I have never rooted any of my phones before so I dont know anything about it. After spending much time on this forum I found this link but I am not sure if these are the right instructions for my xperia Z2 5.1.1 23.4.A.1.232.
What I understood after reading this article was that after following these instructions I would have a rooted lollipop 5.1.1 version on my phone. However I dont want this. I want any suitable(which makes my phone faster and doesnt affect camera quality) rom(I dont know much about them either) with KitKat on my xperia device.
Can anyone please help me to achieve the above with all the detailed steps as I am totally new to this?
Any help will be highly appreciated.
Follow that guide but in step 3 (Then flash the latest*23.4.A.0.546*zip file, which is pre rooted) flash your kitkat rom or whatever you want. Look in the dev section.

Which ROM you'll prefer is a personal thing, so read about the different ones, look at any pictures and try one. While looking and researching them you'll find the download links.
Having said that I'm just running a rooted version of the Sony 5.1.1 ROM, version 23.4.A.1.232 and quite like it. Sure it has a heap of apps I don't use but I'm not out of space and everything works.
I've got a few different devices with different builds of AOSP based ROMs on them, it varies as the developers for different devices vary so you end up using what's available for your device.
Given you've never rooted your phone before I'm not sure all of the advanced options of some of the ROMs will do much for you, you can spend hours and hours setting things up how you want and then another update turns up and they don't all handle dirty flashes well.
Why do you want root access and what are you expecting it to do for you?

I just want to explore and learn things. Some problems I face with xperia Z2 are wifi connectivity, my voice isnt clear to other side while on call, low battery life and runs slow given its hardware specifications.
Cant you unistall the apps which occupy your memory given your device is rooted?
And what if I dont update my device?
I also read about losing my drm keys after flashing, though I didnt understand completely what it meant.
I want to install rooted version of Sony 4.4.4 rom but after searching the forum I cant decide which one I should download. Please help.

Sorry to hijack the tread.... Did you have "full root"?
I think i'm having issues on SELinux or mounting permissions.
I can't remove system apps( w/ root uninstaller ), or change system files.
I manually changed selinux (su -c "setenforce 0"), solve it but was not persistent. Installed SELinuxmodechanger, but i think it's not fully working after reboot...

Do you have nuts deul recovery installed? Thats meant to disable RIC during boot to make /system rw, allowing you to remove system apps.

Keep reading mate. If you lose the DRM keys you can't get them back without a backup, you can't use ones someone else backed up either.
I can uninstall some of the preinstalled apps if I want but as I haven't run out of space I haven't yet. I'm also interested in seeing what Sony does with them, some I'll not use and others I glance at.
Battery life is pretty impressive for me but it varies with how you use your device. I play Ingress and if I'm out playing I get five hours, that's with the screen on, GPS and data going. Not many phones can do that.
Calls are normally clear although I've noticed that if I'm lying on my bed talking it doesn't cope very well, I have to twist my head so the ear I'm using is away from the pillow. I assume it's because the noise cancelling microphone is on the top and gets confused/muffled as when I move my head it's great. I've had people comment on how clear I sound on this phone.
I've not had any trouble with WiFi and haven't felt the phone is slow. So how are you determining that your device is slow? What is it doing which makes you feel it is slow?
Not sure what you mean by not updating your device. If you mean not updating the ROM nothing really happens but as time passes there is a greater chance that apps will stop working, it depends on what you use and if the makers of them what a minimum Android version for them. Also if there are security flaws the longer you used an unpatched device the greater the chance that you'll get compromised. It is quite irritating that we're not fully patched for Stagefright yet.
As for the original question about how to root this ROM version, the short answer is, you can't. Well not yet that I've seen.
To root the phone you have to downgrade, gain root and then upgrade to what you want to run while keeping root. You found the guide already, follow it. If you don't understand or aren't confident about doing it I'd suggest not doing it. If it's your only device and primary phone is it worth breaking it and being without a phone?
If you want to learn about Android devices in general pick up a cheap device to play with and learn on, the Z2 is still quite expensive. You could probably pick up one with a broken screen pretty cheaply online, as long as you can read the screen you can play around and learn on it. Just plug a mouse in if the digitiser doesn't work.
I used a stock Samsung GS2 for years while reading about things, then I got a tablet and started playing with that as it was just inconvenient to me if I broke it, I still had a working phone.
@clawpt I'm not sure what you mean by "full root". I can uninstall things if I want though, perhaps Matt's reply will help you.

I wasnt much confident but still I proceeded with the steps mentioned in the guide and with a little help from google, I was fortunately able to root my device. Yes, its the only phone I have but I couldnt afford a new one and I waited too long for its warranty to expire.
Can you please provide me with a source to learn about general concepts involved in rooting like flashing, busybox, unlocking boot loader, etc. I am trying to google each thing individually, but i cant seem to find a place where I could learn things in a proper order, moving from basics to more advanced concepts.
Thank you so much for your help.
I would like you to clear one more thing for me, when I followed the guide, I first flashed my device with 17.1.2.A.0.314 ftf file and then installed flashable_D6502_23.4.A.0.546.zip from the recovery menu. So what is a ftf file and what is the difference between the two steps I followed. In my understanding, both basically did the same thing, i.e., installing a new rom. Is ftf file sony specific?
Thanks again.
@berbatov93 definitely back up the DRM keys before unlocking the boot loader, it was a fairly simple process from memory.
We need more information on the sound problem. Does it happen consistently? If it isn't consistent look for a common situation when you have the problem, like loud noises, high wind etc. Have you used the diagnostics tool to test the microphone? It's in Settings > About phone > Diagnostics.
Thinking about it a bit more, sometimes there seems to be a little pause for people to hear me. I'm not sure if it's phone or network based, I guess it could be phone related while it works out the background noise cancelling magic.
WiFi being slow to connect is a better description than, "my device is too slow."
Sometimes I notice that it hasn't automatically connected to my WiFi when I get home but by the time I notice and look it's connecting. Is that what you mean?
What setting do you have the WiFi on when the phone is asleep? Settings > WiFi > ... menu > Advanced > Keep Wi-Fi on during sleep.
Everything is slow with lots of Chrome tabs open, you could try a different browser or just be better at closing tabs.
I've never noticed any slow launching with the dialer, perhaps your call history is huge? Try backing it up with an app from the Play Store and then deleting it to see if that is the cause. Each time you open it it looks at that to display it.
As you're on a stock ROM it will notify you that there is a new update. If you let it update though you'll lose root and then have to downgrade again to get it back. I just wait for the update to be available through XperiFirm, download it and make a pre-rooted flashable zip. There is a thread about how to do that here. That thread will also answer your question about what you did which seemed like flashing two ROMs, you did but in different ways.
I still don't know enough so I can't answer your questions but it looks like your Google Fu is weak. :silly:
Try this link, it won't always be the top search result though.
There are lots of different summaries about what rooting does for you, I don't want to try and summarise them for you. (I'd rather go to bed, it's 4:30am for me!)
Just reading a description of one of the various Busybox installers on the Play Store should answer that question, I bought this one. I can't remember if a friend recommended it to me or something I read somewhere, but I bought it as I appreciated the effort the developer put in for the rest of us to use. The same with SuperSU Pro.
Bootloaders are trickier, probably something you'll get better answers by reading more or using Google. These days they seem to all be locked with a way of unlocking them from the device manufacturer which lets them record your IMEI or serial number. I assume they do this so if you send it back for a warranty claim they can see you've unlocked it and then charge you to fix something you've screwed up. I've never taken anything back so I don't know.
They're something I have to learn more about too but if you find out more before me please fill me in.

Will sony be able to fix my device in case I screwed up and bricked it?
Thanks.
@berbatov93 I'm sure Sony will fix it if you pay them too!
Hopefully it won't come to that though, they're pretty hard to brick because of the way they've set things up. Even if you soft brick it you can power it off, fire up the flash tool and then hold volume down and plug USB in, press flash and it'll put a base Sony ROM on for you. I've kept the D6503_17.1.A.2.55_Generic AU 1281-9715.ftf file on my PC for just that reason but I haven't had to reuse it yet.
I don't know of any other instructions for making your own pre-rooted zip file, it took me a fair bit of reading and looking at menu options to work it out the first time but it's pretty easy. You won't screw your phone up with it as it will fail before you get it to the phone if you do it incorrectly. As with most things in life you have to learn from experience, just follow the instructions with the programs open so you can refer back to them. You could try Google for better instructions, I'm not sure if anyone wrote something more newbie friendly.
As for the WiFi problem perhaps a different ROM version will sort it out, also you might want to get all your data off your phone and do a completely fresh install on it and see if that sorts it out. The backups people talk about as Nandroids are done from in the custom recovery, have a look in there now you've got it working again. I'm not going to reply to the other thread as I see you did it all again.
I doubt there are any pre-rooted 4.4.4 still around as most people have moved on. There's probably no need to make a pre-rooted one though, one of the root exploits works on it so you could just download, via XperiFirm, the 4.4.4 you want and flash it, then root it. I've never downloaded a pre-rooted ROM as I'm overly cautious, I'm not even keen on using the one click root programs as I can't read what they're doing!
You could call it a Chrome problem but I'd really call it a user problem. Like I said originally you could try another browser and see if it copes better but they aren't really designed to have lots of tabs open. Each tab takes up memory, so you'll fill it all up and then it will start using virtual memory but eventually it will crash. It happens on desktop computers too, I've got 8GB of RAM in my PC but Chrome eats it all up if I open too many tabs.
I don't know what to do about your mic problems in call, I'd take it back to where you got it from and see what they say. But I'm pretty sure you've waited too long as you indicated it was out of warranty which is why you've started looking at root options now. If you've been having problems for a while you should have taken it back before you lost that. It's still worth asking the store/phone company about it though, just make sure they don't go charging you anything to fix it without asking you about it.
You might just have to chalk it up to experience and live with it. Never be afraid to ask for things to be looked at while the warranty is valid, it might be inconvenient but if something needs fixing it's better to use the warranty than pay for it.
The other option would be to use a headset for calls, I picked up an SBH52 and I'm pretty happy with it. As long as you don't lose or break it it will work with whatever phone you end up replacing your Z2 with.

Whatsapp Virus spreading?

Hello everyone,
I might have a big problem.
This morning I booted my HTC One M7 as usual, and when it finished booting it opened a browser tap with a fake whatsapp update. I closed the browser immediately, and five minutes after this, the exact same thing happened. I started thinking how this could happend, and honestly I have no clue. All my apps are from the play store, and I only download documents for school. I haven't even downloaded a new app in the last week, however 15+ of my apps aren't up to date.
I scanned my phone with malwarebytes and it couldn't find anything. I rebooted my phone after the scan, and the problem seems to be gone. I was telling this story to a friend of mine this afternoon, and my mother said that she experienced the same thing, just a couple hours before I experienced it. After further investigation, it wasn't exactly the same. When she opened whatsapp, it asked her to do a weekly back-up of her chats. At first, she closed whatsapp, but when it appeared again, she clicked yes. She wasn't very clear about this, so I don't know if it was a fake menu, or the real deal. I have also scanned her Moto g (2013), and it found no malware.
I don't know if this could be harmfull. Especially because my parents use their phones for mobile banking.
This is a screenshot of my HTC
It could easily have been done through whatsapp. Part of the reason most people have stopped using it. Viruses run rampant I'm just about all of Facebook apps. And no anti virus will find them as they are vastly different then normal viruses.

Yeah I heard alot of people in Europe use it alot, here in the states almost no one uses it really except for kids. Most have moved to hangouts.
If I was you I would completely back up the device and then wipe everything and reflash the device.
Things like this will not be picked up by so called virus scanners.
I'am afraid that it is something like ShiftyBug (https://blog.lookout.com/blog/2015/11/04/trojanized-adware/). In the article it says that you have to install apps from third parties, but I have almost never done that. I have downloaded popcorntime in the past, but I have deletet it almost 6 months ago.
I'm afraid that if I reflash my device, that it will come back fairly soon. Is it possible that it has spread over my wifi network? Because of the fact that my mother got something similar on the same day.
But how do I know for sure that it is a virus? After I restarted my phone (12 hours ago), it hasn't shown up yet. Am I worried for nothing, or is there a big chances that I'm infected?

The key word there is almost. If you reflash the device and it comes back then it maybe something that someopne else downloaded and was shared through your network. As you said your mother also saw it so I would go through her phone as well.
There are many apps out there that do this that are in the play store. So it is all a matter of being careful.
There is a chance. If it is big or not depends on how you use your device. It could also have come from a website someone visited. Im not saying you did but many porn sites are set to infect devices when they visit them.
If it was me. I would just start from scratch with each device and make sure that all the things installed are legit.
You could also run a logcat and try to reproduce it. That would tell you what is causing it.
Doesn't seem dangerous.

Then you have not been paying attention. Any browser pop that tells you to update an app is 99% an infected apk. It is a common practice for those that take apks and re-package them with malware
After reading more i must admit you are right.... My bad:good:
So I have to flash my phone, aren't there any other options? And if not, how do I reflash The HTC firmware to my phone?
Should I make a back-up before doing this, won't the malware spread again if I instal the back-up on my phone?
Thanks again!
EDIT:
Unfortunately, I still haven't been able to reproduce the problem.
I still haven't been able to reproduce the pop-up.
I do propably know where the problem came from, a friend of mine sent me a older version of soundcloud (the new one can't cache music). I installed that app, decided that it was to old for me and deleted it. The malware must have spread right after the first use. I'm planning on flashing my phone inthe weekend.
EDIT: I can reprodce the pop-up! It's linked to opening the app 'night mode', this app was downloaded in the official play store 2 years ago. Since then it hasn't got a lot of updates though.
Hey,
Time for a little update.
Last weekend, I contacted HTC's customer support due to the fact that I couldn't find my software version. They told me that I should execute a RUU, but they couldn't find the right version, so I had to contact the Dutch customer support (I didn't do this in the first place because the Dutch customer support wasn't open in the weekend).
The next monday (23-11) I contacted the Dutch customer support and asked them for the ROM, and unfortunately due to the regulations they don't publish the ROM's. However, they told me to do a factory reset and that should solve the issue. Unfortunately, it didn't. After the reset, I now get a different Whatsapp pop-up once or twice a day. The pop-up isn't connected to opening an app, like it was before the reset.
A friend of mine experienced the same problem this week on his new Moto X. All the other phones in my home network don't have this problem.
I hope someone will be able to help me!
Thanks in advance!

There's a chance that it might've spread over a certain network.... Is you and your moto x friend uses the same network ?

Yes, we both use the wifi network at our high school. But I did the factory reset friday evening, and since then I haven't connected to that network.
It might have spread through that network though.

Depending on the malware a factory reset will not remove it. In fact most malware cant be removed that way. You have to flash the whole device to get rid of it.

In my opinion after starting all over again as you've already been told, you should do all that you did before and monitor each step with patience and concentration to actually understand what's behind this... This may help out

As he said. Here is what I would do if I was in your place. Anyone got any extra steps to add feel free to chime in. This would kinda suck for a bit.
You will need a custom recovery. And a bit of time to set up
1. Take everything off device.
2. Format full device in recovery. Not factory reset. Format system, data, internal storage and both caches.
3. Flash complete stock firmware.
4. Get root before rebooting
5. Reboot, do not connect to wifi during set up. Do not restore anything.
6. Get Catlog from the play store and run it.
7. Then continue set up. Wifi and ect. Scan backed up files with a pc virus scan but only return what you really need.
8. When restoring from TIBU install apps fresh from the market and restore data only to apps. (sucks I know but only way to be sure) make sure to delete old back and redo.
Then monitor catlog. This will tell you everything going on. You would be able to figure it out.

If you would've read it fully than you'll know that the case is far bigger than what you're thinking it is

No battery charging or no network connection (sim)

Hello guys. As you see I'm new here. I decided to write here because I have a problem with my brand new P9. Firstly I would like to say sorry for my english and all mistakes i will probably make writing this post.
I buy my p9 for about two weeks ago. All was great, but in the evening I saw, that my battery is not charging very well. I mean it was charging, but soo slow. When I was using my phone, battery discharged when was plugged in to charger. I checked in AMPER application from Android Market, and there was something about 100ma when charging. It's not enought I think, so I send my p9 to repair. They said there was soft problem, they install new android (soft - in polish), and of course problem has gone. I was happy that It's all but now I have another problem. Huawei can't find network (I mean signal 3g, don't reading sim card). Wifi works normally. So i decided to make hard reset in settings. And u know what? There's a problem with battery again. I install new rom (even few, b132, b167, 17.....) and in all was problem with sim-card. What can I do to make my phone works normally? I don't want to send it again, it's wasting of time I think...
Please help me, should I install Beta 7.0 android ? Where can I found it and which one will work with my p9? How to chech it ? My p9 is eva-l09 with only one sim card.
Hope somebody will understand me

It really looks like an Issue on the hardware part. I think you will have to send it to repair.

Got it, but look. When phone arrive to me after repair, everythings works great except sim card. So it's possible that it's software fault I think. But now it doesn't work on any soft ( I mean charging). So, maybe I'm doing something wrong?
I download softs from many internet sites, maybe you have your favourite one? Than I was make folder on main storage (not on sd card cause I didn't have any one). Folder called dload, than I unzipping (in winrar) to my computer, than copy it to this folder. Later click down + on buttons and everything were installing. Is there something wrong? How did they do it, that when phone arrived to me there was 1400ma in AMPER application, and now I'm using many other softs and it's doesn't work....

With soft you mean software/rom right? Look out for a tool called nexus toolkit and reset your phone with it.

Ok, I will try it. Yes, I mean ROM/software. I downloaded it from huawei website, with 182 (I mean last numbers of software number).
Yea but how to do it. I have a 2.1.9 version of NRT. Now, what device should I choose? I don't see huawei p9. And don't see my android build ;/
UPDATE
I think it's too hard for me. Maybe it's not, but I really don't want to kick something and lose my guarantee. I think I have to send this phone, there's no another way I think... Maybe if I will root and bootloader unlock, but I could lose guarantee so it's not way for me. Is there any way to make my phone bricked, to make "them" (mean CCS) didn't know it's my folk? I thinking about because I really don't want to got half-worked phone again ;/

Sending it back is the way that is alot safer. You could try different things with unlocking and everything.. But if it's really a hardware issue you would be screwed
Yeach, you're right. I will send it and write here what was wrong with phone. Thanks for your help guys. Take care
