Wired Tethering? - XPERIA X10 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

What are you guys using to tether via usb? I've searched and found nothing. It's on my roommates non rooted x10a.

I use PDAnet for USB tethering. There's also an app called Easy Tether, but I haven't tried it...

Pdanet isn't available for 1.6

I use the free version of EasyTether. But, it doesnt open https websites, which can be frustrating.

Some carriers block certain apps especially AT&T, i have a X10a R2CA016 i just used sideload wonder machine you need a pc though and for those mac users i would recomend usind parallels desktop.
Other than that it depends on how you do it!
I need help i have been trying to get my phone to tether but no luck i have PdaNet installed but my computer states that the phone is not attached when obviously it is, tried barnacle no luck either, aka ive tried a couple apps some of them give me an error saying that my kernel does not support this feature!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
any you guys have a suggestion?
would be greatly appreciated

[Q] PDANet tethering problem

I did a quick search here but could not find any answer.
I am running rooted Android 2.2 on my Fascinate. PDANet works just fine every time I start it. But after a few minutes the "USB connected" message would pop up and prompts if I want to connect the phone as mass storage. I already checked the USB Debugging option and tried all three USB connection setting options (mass storage, media player, ask when connected) but the problem still remains. To prove it's not a PDANet related problem, I also tried EasyTethering and got the same issue.
Has anybody here experienced the same problem with tethering? I used wireless tether before but the connection keeps dropping. So I really want to be able to tether through USB. Thanks in advance.
Forgot to mention that my computer is a MacBook Pro.
It is a Mac issue. I have a MacBook pro and I have the same issue. It doesn't do this when I am connected and tethered to a PC. Anybody have a Mac solution for this?
Sent from my SCH-I500 using XDA App
I had suspected Mac might have been the culprit. Thank you for your response, otherwise I would have flashed back to 2.1 by now.
Do you think running parallel desktop on Mac and tethering through the virtual Windows is going to help? I know the hardware is still Mac. Unfortunately that Macbook is the only machine that I need to tether.

Yes, I think running windows would probably solve the issue although I'm not sure. It's in theory. I think the Mac OS is the issue. If you try it let me know the results please. I haven't done it because I would have to format my Mac partition and that means that I would have to backup my Mac and that means getting an external HD. Know what I mean?

Parallel desktop runs Windows on top of the Mac OS. So it shouldn't cause this much disturbing, although it would be less likely to help with this tethering issue compared to bootcamp --- I will update this thread after I try. Thanks again.

Actually, what I was talking about was bootcamp. Sorry, I misunderstood. I think you're right, I don't think the parallel would work. Either way let me know. Thanks.

Possible to root other phones from an Atrix?

As the subject states I want to know if there is any possible way to connect to another android phone from my Atrix and push files to and root other non-rooted files?
Sent from my MB860 using XDA App
Are you just asking how to send files between phones? If so u can use Bluetooth, wifi file explorer, swap sdcards or send an email with the file...if not then you need to be more specific.
Sent from my Transformer TF101
I would suppose it would be possible if you're using weptop & the lapdock or maybe the media dock
Yeah to be more specific in the small area I live Im about the only person who knows how to root phones and I have several people wanting me to do it for them. Currently the only method I have is via my dinosaur desktop.
Was hoping someone could direct me to a file, app, or method to use my Atrix to root other phones without involving a desktop or laptop computer.

Z4Root from the market works on a few phones - worth a try
Knowing which phones and the carriers would help to start also.
So far most of the people needing to root are using a Samsung Captivate on AT&T.
Sent from my MB860 using XDA App
I think that what he wants to do is something like fire up a terminal window on his atrix, connect via ADB to the other phones using that terminal window, and basically eliminate the need for a pc.
That's a great question. As far as an answer goes. I ain't got no clue.

when i had my captivate i would use superoneclick but you need a desktop. try looking for a root method that involves using system recovery to flash a zip file that way you can just carry the file in your phone and transfer to theirs. im not up to date with the captivate so i dunno if a method exist.
To access another phone remotely, you want to be on the same WiFi LAN and install something like SSHDroid for a SSH daemon on the other machine, so you can connect using Android Terminal Emulator over wifi instead of a usb cable and using ADB.
If this is all greek to you, start googling!

I don't think that will work. He's trying to get root on the other phone, but SSHDroid is fairly gimped unless you already have root on the phone. Also, Android Terminal Emulator would probably be useless. You'd need to find an ssh client from the market instead.
There's a thread in the dev section for an arm version of adb. That would actually let you connect another phone to your Atrix and run adb commands off of it... If you have the lapdock. If you don't, I don't know of any way to connect two phones directly by cable.
The update.zip + bluetooth method suggested by neotekz is probably the more realistic method, since I assume you don't have the lapdock.

It's on the market, but as I said, it won't work as you're hoping. I mean, how can you use the "su" command to be able to do all the good stuff unless that other phone has already been rooted? But since the point is to try to get root, it's a chicken and egg thing.
Look into the update.zip thing. Or if you succeed with sshdroid and SSH, come back here and let us know how because I'd really be curious to know how you managed it

If you're on a stock AT&T build, you should still be able to root with GingerBreak, but then again, I'm not even sure if they have sideloading enabled yet, so that may not even be an option. It's been nothing but GingerBlur and HKTW for me since they were released.

Can not get root tether apps to work

Alright, Currently I have the 2.3.4 gingerbread version of the Atrix rooted. For some reason I can not get any of the wireless tethering root apps to work. This includes Wireless tether for root users, wifi tether and barnacle. None of these would work on my previous 2.2.2 root either. Any help? the logs say the programs are running fine but none of my devices can pick up the phone. This includes laptops and me Eee Pad. I have changed the SSID, added and removed wep. I do not know what I am doing wrong....
I know this probably won't help much but the same thing was happening to me when I first rooted my Atrix and the Wireless Tether app. I turned off the password and everything worked fine after that. I can always see who is trying to connect to my network anyway so I know if anybody is trying to steal my network.

Why not root and change the entitlement check then use the built in mobile hotspot app.
I've been using it with no problem and used the custom apn method before GB

They can tell much easier that you are tethering without a plan if you are using custom APN's.
The custom apn will not work on gingerbread. The ota will not allow changes like froyo did.

I got slightly different issue, wireless tether for root - clients can see the AP and connect at layer 2, but refuse to take a DHCP address and never actually get an IP address. This happens both with and without encryption.
Too cheap to buy sqlite editor to do the mod

Need help with how to get TB to wifi tether

Hi I'm new to Android. I just recently AOL'ed a VZW plan. It has unlimited data, switched from AT&T.
I was given a TB by my brother, got a sim and it's now activated.
I want to be able to tether and downloaded foxfi and PDA net and they both don't support HTC devices. I want to be able to tether on our iPads when we travel.
I see that with foxfi and PDA net you can tether via Bluetooth. I'm not sure what or how this would work if we are out and about.
Is there a way to get my TB the ability to wifi tether?
I'm pretty sure sharing your androids internet with an apple device is a sin. Repent now!

You need to root the phone so that you can use wireless tether from the market. It's easier to setup than pdanet and works a lot better.

Not a Mac user, but here are two good starting points:
How to root:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1220484
Easiest way to root, using trter10's one-click rooting tool:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1703455
Once rooted you will open the phone to all sorts of performance and customization opportunities including free wifi tethering. Depending on the custom ROM you choose to go with, wifi tethering may come included in the ROM (eg. it does in Thundershed). If not, there are a few good ones in the Play Store, eg Wifi Tether, Barnacle, and Open Garden. All will work, and all are free. I had most success and best performance with Wifi Tether, but YMMV as every device seems to work a little differently.
Good luck!

Having a mac and rooting the Thunderbolt is a pain in the ass. I did it the hard way and that was to either have bootcamp installed with a windows partition. Or run Parrallel's virtual machine with a windows partition and run the all-in-one-tool. Running the All in one tool is the easiest way to root your phone setting up your system to run the tool is the pain in the ass part.

If it has CWM then chances are it either was, or still is rooted. Can you reboot into the OS on the phone, or can you only get to CWM? If you can get into the OS normally, check to see if Superuser is installed.

[Q] USB Tether problem

When i turn on usb tethering in atrix phone windows computers starts connection but the adapter has no ip address and i can't access the internet.
If i set ip address manually in windows sometimes i can access the internet.
I also have tried "wired tether for root users" and it doesn't work either.
Carrier doesn't block tether usage.
Any idea how to solve this?
I think the dhcp server in the phone is not working.
I'm looking for a solution not involving third party apps. Just android phone and maybe command line.

And you really couldn't mention at least what ROM you're using?
How come people never mention the most critical information when asking questions?
EDIT: I see I was late... but still.
Also why can't people learn that questions expecting answers need to go to Q&A?
