Android on the Cricket Android plan "Easy Web and MMS Fix" - Droid Eris General

This thread is for the talk about Android phones on the Cricket wireless Android plan. I have started this thread out of respect of "token419" to keep his thread Clean for his support and development.
If you signup or change your plan to Crickets Android plan you no longer need a WAP proxy. MMS well also work with only the need to setup your APNs. Your internet well be much faster in most cases 2x as fast.
It although can be a large pain in the A** to get cricket to make the appropriate changes to your account. There are people around the internet that can and well make account changes for a small fee. It can be done with out having to resort to that though and can take many I repeat many calls to cricket to get this done. some say all you have to do is request to be put on the "ADR Smartphone All In $55" plan. Others like my self also got there phone type listing changed form CPE "Customer Provided Equipment" to the "Kyocera M6000".
ONCE YOU GET YOUR SELF ON THE ANDROID PLAN:
Don't forget to remove your "autostart.sh" and your "u2nl". autostart.sh is in /data/opt and your u2nl is in /system/bin. Or you could simply remove autostart and reset your phone.
Please post your successes

I plan to upgrade to this plan. I have an incredible and my girlfriend has a hero. My incredible can access the internet and apps work but no mms. The hero can't access anything or send mms.
I got my data working from one of the zip files token419 uploaded will these apns work even though MMS isn't working at this point? Also not having anything work on the hero I am assuming something is wrong in the pst settings but I can not access epst from ##778# I can from ##data# but I don't think all f the needed settings are there. Any thoughts?
Thanks

The APNs form Token's .zip Should work, they did for me.
On my eris some ROMs don't support diagnostic dialing. Ported froyo ROMs in my experience defiantly don't. It's more then likely the same for the Hero. your best bet is to flash to a rooted stock rom or some kind of plainJane rom then do your epst settings.
Also if you can dial ##diag you could change the appropriate pst settings from something like QPST.

whats the speed difference between the android plan and the unlimited 45 plan(which im on)?
My speeds are averaging about 500kb(download) and about 600-700(upload)...is there that much a difference? And you said MMS should now work even on AOSP roms? im on CM RC1 and was wondering this before i changed over my plan to the android plan.

I average about 1150kb (Download) and about 650kb (Upload). I'm not 100% sure about MMS on a AOSP Rom. Please let me know if you find out.

Yeah it's weird I tried it on both 1.5 and 2.1 stock roms. I tried using qpst with no change maybe I missed something. I am used to flashing WM phones from the phones epst settings so qpst was new for me.
The hero is stuck saying "turning on...." for the mobile network could something else be causing this?
Thanks

ok so i think i got that all taken care of finally. so a fresh installed rom with the normal apn changes made are all thats needed now?
mms still leaves me with some questions specially when dealing with sprint roms and the evo since i know the aosp cm6 still puts sprint in the banner unless i change the eri.xml file and the stock messenger def has sprint things in it but we will figure that out soon enough

Hmm... I don't know I'v never had that problem. In my experience flashing a WM and a android Phone are almost identical processes. Maybe on your hero you should flash over a factory rom with a factory radio return it to a completely stock phone and start over???

Good to hear... That should take care of it. I don't think you even need to flash a ROM Just remove your "autostart.sh" and your "u2nl" or just uninstall autostart and you should be good to go

Alltel Touch Pro 2.01.671.1 ROM update

It's on HTC's website, dated July 7th. I haven't seen any other threads on it, and I wanted to see if anyone else has tried it. I've updated to it myself, and it seems to be an overall improvement over the version I had. There's really nothing much in the notes, though it seems they tweaked quite a bit. Most notably, it's done wonders for my battery life. I used to always come home with a phone that was nearly dead. Now I get home with 60-70% still left on the battery. It could be my imagination, but the phone seems a bit more responsive now as well. If the battery life is anything to go by, it could just be from general optimization of the ROM. Other points of interest... the activesync app is no longer self-launching, and Opera Mobile appears to have had an update as well.
-edit-
Here's the link: http://www.htc.com/us/supportdownloadlist.aspx?p_id=200&act=sd&cat=all
im in the process of doing it know, ill let ya know what i think in a bit
I tried it when it 1st came out, its definitely better than the shipped rom, but its still got all of the bloatware and other b.s. that interferes with performance. IMO, you're still better off with a cooked rom.
ya i honestly cant tell a different between stock rom and this update
Oh yeah, I'm sure a cooked rom is faster. Just thought I'd put the PSA out there. It does seem to address a few issues for my launch version of the ROM.
one of these day ill get around to putting a custom rom on my phone.
thiers just to many and i cant figure out which one i want
stock
if i have already unlocked my phone and running a custom rom and want to flash to this stock rom do i need to do anything different?
No, just flash as you normally do. Every couple of flashes I go back to the stock rom anyway. Probably just the "placebo" effect, but I've convinced myself it helps.
Do it for the Radio

Notation to everyone here this ROM includes an updated radio. 1.12.20F. So that it's self should be worth it. I run NFS rom but I am going to update to this so I can grab the updated radio. I will then jump to his. My radio is currently 1.03.16F. It also has the later PRL and PRI.
I see the in the Radio Thread in this forum that they have the alltel readio without the whole ROM. So if you want go that route. I have just found that doing a stock flash every once in awhile keeps my custom flashing less problematic.
im still having problems as far as radio signal.........and the only reason i don't just upgraded the radio is their is no alltel dump yet
I also get great battery life after the update.

typing this didn't do anything...all i got was call cant be completed as dialed
One very nice discovery I made today (because of how little I actually talk on my TP) is that they've changed the call answer screen a bit. Seems they took a page from Apple's book and changed the answer and ignore buttons into a slider. You slide it all the way left to answer, and right to ignore. Should fix the accidental answer problem I know a lot of people (including myself) have had.
Will this work on Verizon TP? I know i will have to apply keyboard patch but would it work?
Radio should work no problem, especially since alltel and verizon are 1 now.
I dispise Verizon ROM. No YouTube, No Internet Sharing etc... Got it as a insurance replacement when my Alltel TP broke. They said they don't have Alltel TPs anymore.
Please give me the good news... PLEEEAAASE
PS: I already have GPS unlocked using MR1 release from Verizon.

I wouldn't attempt it if I were you. Have you considered trying a custom rom? If you've never done it I could help you through the process. Stock roms SUCK!
Can i ask you if it works in a touch pro un-locked of the vodafone Italy company?
I have an alltel touch pro but my area switched to verizon now, im assuming this won't be a problem because i didn't need to do any update when they switched so im guessing the radio won't be an issue? Really want to do this if it increases battery.
Also will this remove any settings or themes that kind of stuff?
edit nevermind i see it removes everything.
if i take my memory card out before i update can will all the programs that are one it reinstall? and when i put all my backed up data back on the device do the programs reinstall or do i have to do something to reinstall them?

Wi-Fi tethering - Amaze

Okay so i have been looking around and found that we do have a lot of questions around Wi-Fi tethering being an issue...
- APN change fails after an hour or two
- Aftermarket tethers installed. and run but do not seem to be found by other devices
- Wifirouter.apk push from 1.36 showed no change (Connected but no internet connection)
So, what else have people tried that has things working for them or not working that we can note as a fail...
So far i've tried Barnacle and Wifi Tether ( I had to download from the web since it will not show in the market). Both start fine and say they are sharing wifi but my pc on win 7 will not see them. I can try use either on the vibrant and both work fine, my pic finds them. Any other ideas... I still have 10 days to exchange this phone. I really do not want to go to the SGS2 but if there's no way to tether without paying xtra for something i already get... im afraid i will have no choice....

Well I don't have an issue and never did. It always worked fine for me. What happened to me is that after a few hours of standard internet usage it started directing me to the upsell page no matter how many times I changed the APN or rebooted the device. But... perhaps it's market specific. I called T-Mobile b/c they were still throttling me after my new billing cycle and I asked them about it and they said that pretty much everything is market specific. That might explain a lot actually. Like I was telling Alexis, in the market where she is located I would never get throttled despite the fact that T-Mobile sent me a message stating that I was. I would still have a ~4mb/s DL speed on my vibrant 3g device. But here in Detroit I get throttled down to 130kb/s. UGH!
Don't feel bad, Binary 130kb/s is my average. I live in a 2G area with a 4G area ten miles up the road.

130kb/s makes me feel terrible when I'm accustomed to averaging 15mb/s.
Throttling down that much should be violation of the Eighth Amendment.

Roughly. I didn't measure it at all but it was standard internet activity. Nothing more. No downloading or anything like that. They sent me a warning at first by pushing a notice to my phone after a few hours saying that I would need to add the service if I wanted to continue using it. The icon was a globe with a "w" on it.
About 5 or 6 hours later I was directed to the upsell page. Despite how many times I rebooted, disconnected, changed my apn, etc I would have be forced to the upsell page. As soon as I added the $15 service I had tethering again. Instantly.
Ok, that is what im trying to figure out... what you did differently. No one else has had that same issue yet that i have heard of.
I flashed 1.3 quicksense today, changed by apn... Went to tether... This time i was able to connect my laptop to my phone, but right off i got the redirect notice...
After talking with binary last night, we got to thinking maybe its kernel based... I am working with boarder on getting the kernel he is running... As its not stock... His APN change fixed his tether completely, maybe the redirect bs is kernel based...

[Q] Any New JB ROMS have Cell Broadcast Settings?

okay so i am wondering if any of the JB ports for our device have the Cell broadcast settings kinda like the vzw nexus has see screenshot for clarification.
This looks like verizon's emergency broadcast system settings. In which case the might be specific to Verizon. Not sure though, I haven't seen this menu but I know they have a service like it.

When I flashed my evo to cricket I noticed the settings you are talkng about in QPST Configuration which is a windows based flashing program if you didn't know. So I wonder if you could set it up while in ICS then flash JB and it still work since those settings appear to be on the underlying partitions not the rom..
Just my observations. Perhaps I'm wrong. Anyone else with input?

[Q] 4.2.2 WIFI tethering workaround?

I love the CM 10.1 build of 4.2.2. It is my dream phone right now. The problem is that no WIFI tethering works on it as of yet. If anyone has anything working I'd love to be proven wrong. This is a show-stopper for me. I can't use bluetooth because my laptop doesn't have bluetooth.
I tried every tethering app out there. Barnacle was the best in that it reported the errors it was seeing instead of just refusing to work.
Anyway, I am thinking of working around the problem by keeping a ROM stored as a TWRP backup that I can restore when I need tethering. I don't need tethering on a moment's notice.
I would like the tethering ROM as slim as possible. I haven't tried any yet. Would a restore be any faster with a slim ROM?
Can someone suggest what ROM I should use that has a small footprint and can restore quickly? I'm thinking that I won't have any apps and no account logged in. If I'm tethering I will be using the other device for email etc. And I'm sure the phone will work no matter what I'm running.
Can anyone suggest a better workaround than this?
I pretty much tether all day with my jellybam install. It has been a rock solid performer on my note and has kept me from having the itch to try any of the 4.2.1 ROMs.
There is supposed to be a new version released tomorrow, but quite frankly , I don't know whether I'll bother as the current version is exceptionally stable ( with flaps kernel )...
I'm sure with cm 10.1 going nightly, they'll have tethering fixed shortly. Its a pretty important feature for many of us.

Sounds like a bad download...Did you download straight to your phone? While I've never had this issue, I have heard that some prefer to download to their computers and transfer the zip to their phones..
You might be right. I did download it to my PC and copy over the zip. However, I had trouble copying and I had to copy a second time. So, I'll try again.
I did a fresh download, copied, wiped, flashed, and it didn't work. Apparently bam won't run on my phone.
...and your using the latest version of twrp?
Yes. I checked. I might be doing something wrong but I doubt it. I'm guessing there is a bug somewhere that rarely shows up. Until the source code is available these custom roms are somewhat a shot in the dark.
I'm just going to go back to my ICS backup when i need tethering. I guess I started this thread with the hope that someone would have a workaround. I really like 4.2.2 and I've decided to live with this. Maybe it will be fixed soon?
Thanks for your help.
The only tethering app that seems to work is "Open Garden." It's in the Play Store but you'll have to side-load it if on AT&T.

I don't know who you are replying to, but I tethered all the time with ATT when using ICS. I didn't know they were trying to block it.
For a while they were changing people's plans to a tethering plan if AT&T caught them tethering. I got a warning email myself.

I know that Verizon has folded tethering into the normal data plans. They make it sound like a benefit but they're raising the overall price so they are really forcing you to buy tethering. I thought ATT and the others were going the same way.
I assume they realized they couldn't enforce it any other way.

I've been to their home page a million times because everyone said you could get the apk there. I was going crazy because all I ever saw was a big orange button to download a version for windows. I had just now typed a reply to you that said you were crazy and then it hit me. You meant to go there on the phone! I'd only been there from my laptop.
Thanks, I'll give it a try now.

As I feared, open garden is bluetooth only.
I was researching the hotspot issue that only a few users have been having and found that it is inherent to android 4.1.2 and newer. What I found out:
"Throughout the previous iterations of Android (<4.1.2), Android has not identified for the carriers which data is for tethering, and which is not.
Android 4.1.2 introduced that ability (and requirement) for Android devices to properly flag when data is for tethering purposes. This is the first time this has been used in a vanilla release of Android...
For everyone frustrated by this update to Android: Android respecting a carrier's request to know if data is for a tethered device IS NOT A BUG. IT IS A FEATURE. It's not a feature for users like you and me, it's a feature for manufacturers like Samsung and HTC, so they can in turn build devices that carriers can have more control over.
So, to be clear, THIS IS NOT A BUG. Google INTENDED to respect carrier tethering rules. The only way to circumvent this is to either get a plan from your carrier that allows tethering, revert to a build of Android of 4.1.1 or earlier (I used wugfresh NRT tools, google it, they're amazing and simple: FOR NEXUS DEVICES ONLY, SORRY), or for a developer to find and KILL THE ****ING ABILITY FOR ANDROID TO TAG DATA AS TETHERING DATA and release that to the public; either by providing an modded Android image, or as an app (much less likely to work unless you're rooted)."
Copied from a past on another forum, and apparently I can't post a link to it.
Even though I clicked on Thanks, I'd like to thank you again for that clear explanation. I'm sure it won't take long for that to be hacked.
i think the next nightly may fix it
Next to fix on next Nightly
msm8660: Add Wi-Fi AP module args (i wonder if this is it?)

I sent JamieD a message about it a few days ago. I'm not sure if all developers were aware with source of the problem. Its especially hard when only some users report having an issue. Hopefully they get it working soon.

Best Rom with "Built-in" WiFi Tether that works.

I've tried a few Roms but I am looking for one that has "Built-in" WiFi tether. I know all the Roms have the feature in settings but they don't seem to work, I always have to download an App. I had an ZTE that was the same way but when the DEVS finally built a Rom with a working WiFi Tether it worked twice as well as the Roms with an app that you had to install. I'm new to this phone, and am trying to set it up for one of my kids first.
@devo3d i just used Domination 6/11 build the other day.
I very rarely ever use tether (so i can't speak much for any other ROMs) ,,, turned it on, set a password, and connected a friends macbook pro to it so he could d/l an updated program...
Worked like a champ

Thanks, I'm still on 2.3.5 so I have to check out how to upgrade to 4.2.2 and I will give it a go........PS: I understand that that Rom is AOKP and was wondering if you can use the dialpad to access DIAG mode ( **87284)? I know a lot of AOKP Roms don't have that function.
Well it has aokp features,,, but none of the jelly bean ROMs have diag mode,,, can't remember if ics had it or not but fairly sure gb ROMs still had

I get confused with the whole JB, ICS, GB stuff...LOL I have to have the ability to get into Diag mode so, if you are familiar, can you give me a link to some of the GB roms, especially ones that may have the WIFI Tether feature. Thanks.
Well let me ask you this,,, what do you need from the diag mode?
Possibly some other way to accomplish it...
I really have no idea what GB ROMs had native Wi-Fi tether if any...

I've been on PagePlus on my LG, nice speeds. This phone is for one of my kids and I'll be trying a couple different carriers to suit their needs. I have a friend that flashes phones and always gives me a real good deal. I'd like to learn how to do it myself but it seems a little too deep for me.
I'm going to try Virgin first, then Boost or Cricket. I had one on Verizon prepay but they figured out about the flashing and cut my internet off.
I prefer Verizon speeds, of course, but that may not be what my kid needs. Anyway, the ability to change it with DFS is a necessity. I might just go with the ICS one I saw for now. We'll see. Let me know if you run across something. BTW, PagePlus killed me on data. My first months data got cut off in only 12 days and all I did was download a 400mb rom and surf the net using its WIFI tether. Needless to say, I only have a few days left on the second month and I'll be going to another.
