Is there anything special about the usb cable? - Vibrant Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Is there anything special about the usb cable that comes packaged with the vibrant? I bought some micro usb cables from amazon and they charge the phone just fine but they won't let my pc mount the sd cards. It seems like maybe there is something different about the data cable? Anyone else experience this?

nope, just a standard micro usb cable...

There are differences... Some cables only allow for charging, they have less pins on the connector. So you will have to find a cable that allows for data transferring as well.

Ah ok, thanks. The ones I bought were only $3, so I guess it's safe to assume they were charge only.

I bought 6 micro USB cables off of Ebay, 5 worked for both data and charging, 1 was a fail and only charges the phone. I'm sure it has a bad wire or solder connection, but at 99 cents and no shipping, who cares.

Try it with usb debugging off... Only way my nexus cable will work on the vibrant.

it's a generic micro USB cable, you can find it at NOkia or HTC store
thanks for the reply, i already made some research and found out that the host cable is in fact a special cable that has 2 wires grounded on the micro usb side.
i actually was able to make one, but it must have broke a soldering point and if i connect it, it drains my battery in 10 minutes...
after the failure i just brought one out of ebay.
regards!
BTW: i encountered and other problem...
i had 2 micro USB cables, and i destroyed 1 to make the host cable, they looked the same so i picked one at random, now the phone wont change with this cable with the ac adapter connected i have to connect it to the PC to that it can receive power.
I tested with an other cable and it worked...has anyone experienced this?
I made one using an old USB extension cable. It took about 10 mins. Short the green and white wires on the female side of the USB cable. Now will use any normal in-car charger.

you have to have a short on the 2 data wires for it to charge.

confused about USB cable

it seems that some people on the forum say they have a standard micro USB connector on the Flyer??? and most of the ebay sellers list standard micro usb products for the HTC Flyer
MY connection is a proprietary one - it looks like a micro usb but has a 'step' in it
like this one...zoom in on the picture
http://www.expansys.com.au/htc-flyer-data-cable-dc-t500-extmicro-usb-12pin-white-209995/
wtf is going on?
Try it, you will like it, except for charging.............
try what? what will i like? what about the charging?
off the shelf micro usb works fine.
The proprietary style is only for charging
If u have a micro usb cable then u have to put it in the opposite way. Like this

It's a generic micro USB connection. The extra's is just that, extra. And not mandatory. I read somewhere (could be here, could be somewhere else) that they made the different connector so you wouldn't use the charger on a device that can't handle the power. But you can use any micro USB cable to connect the device to your PC. And you can even use any micro USB charger, but you'll need a lot of patience as it'll take a long, long time!
While you can use a standard micro USB cable, I have heard it would be better to use the HTC one because it will stay in better. I have used a standard one just fine, but the HTC one does hold in better IMO.

Its both proprietary AND standard. As vj092887 said, you insert the micro-USB male plug "upside-down" from how you would on most HTC devices. And it plugs into the "bottom half" of the jack. All this is in respect to the tablet laying flat, with the screen facing up.
If you use the included charger or sync cable, it takes up the "whole" jack. Sync doesn't really make a difference. But the included charger is much faster than standard HTC Micro-USB chargers.
jeebus on a swizzle stick, only after reading this did i actually shove a standard micro usb into it and i'll be damned.....
thanks guys

Shortly after I got my Flyer, I was at work and wanted to connect it to my laptop. And realized I had left my (HTC) cable at home, sticking in my PC there. I was also kind of disappointed as I had bought the flyer specifically because you could use a micro USB cable!
So, I thought, well, why not try it and see if it fits. And as I generally always first try to stick a cable in upside down (don't ask me why, even if I think about it, I'll try it upside down first ), I got lucky this time and found it fitted

i NEVER put in cables upside down (because i always put a little dot on the top side of the connector using nail polish...you can use liquid paper for a more 'manly' experience)
Is there a source for an innexpensive extra cable? I've been using a standard micro USB and it works but feels very loose compared to the official HTC cable that came with my flyer.

If you mean with a HTC style power connector, no, that's for charging only. For data cables Ebay or Amazon has them for about $1 each.

I wouldnt buy those generic cables from ebay/amazon etc they are poorly made and can either break off in your device, break off the connector on the device, or short out.. I highly recommend getting either Motorola or HTC OEM cables. They cost $2 - $5 but its worth it.

Does this mean that the MHL adapter with 5 pins will work (standard Micro USB), and I don't need the 12 pin MHL version (extMicro USB)?

yes! but apparently it charges really slowly so microUSB is best left to data transfer only

Perhaps I wasn't clear enough. Although a standard micro USB connector works for me when transferring data I don't like how loose it seems in the Flyer's socket. So I want another cable just like the one that came with my Flyer, a micro ExtUSB cable. I've only found mini ExtUSB cables not micro ones, hence my request for an inexpensive cable source.

there are no inexpensive extUSB cables...i don't know where you are but try expansys or amazon in your country...they're all upwards of $20
There is no 3rd party source for the non-standard HTC proprietary connector.
HTC manufactured Windows Mobile and Android-based devices have a proprietary connector called HTC Micro ExtUSB (Extended USB). ExtUSB combines Micro-USB (with which it is backwards-compatible) with audio input as well as audio and video output in an 11-pin connector. The extra pins also allow for higher charging currents.
If you really want to spend on a high quality cable, here you go, the best, most expensive per foot USB micro cable in the world . For ~$25 this should keep your Flyer and small pets from bursting into flame............

By the way, all the generic or other brand MHL adapters work fine with the HTC for connection to HDMI.

USB Cable ***ALERT***

I guess the U in usb isn't so universal, found out today that you HAVE TO use the cable with the (v-cast sticker) in order to transfer data and any other cable INCLUDING the ones they sell at the V store will only charge the phone.

The LG cable from my work Epic 4g doesn't work on my Razr. The HTC cable, blackberry cable, and Motorola cables all work fine. I did have to restart the phone to get the cables to work after I tried to use the LG cable.
LG cables are known to suck, avoid them like the plague.
I've just been using any old cables I've had lying round, at least 3 different brands, lengths etc, no problems at all.

This is known issue with Motorola phones having to use certain micro USB cables. Not all will work on a cellbrite machine or for data transfer. Not every USB cable is the same. I am not sure the technical reason for it, but BB cables do not work. For what it is worth BB uses USB A to micro USB "B" cables.
The easiest way to tell if the cable will support debugging mode. The charge only cables will not trigger the debugging mode in the status bar.

Completely untrue. I have never unpacked my Razr's charge/USB cable. It is still in its box. I use the USB cable from my first-generation B&N Nook to charge and transfer data. I sideloaded over 20 gb of data onto my card with it and use USB tether with it.

well according to the quote above, BB cables do work.
And ive been charging my Razr on my BB Tour cable just fine all day.
OK some Blackberry cables do not work. This isn't even a debate. Just Google. There are several articles on this that go into what causes it. Most micro USB cables do work just fine. So don't say that "well I used these hand full of cables" so I'm going to pass that off as scientific proof that you must have a defective phone.
What idiot would pull a random cable have it work and say well that proves they all work?
It's mostly a problem with Motorola phones and some HTC. It has something to do with the amps (or something) the phone needs out of the cable. While all micro USB cables have the same number of pins, apparently not all have the same number of wires connecting all the pins. This is what I have read, I have not actually stripped a cable to find out.
I do have daily experience transferring data through all kinds of phones and we have a couple of cables that will not work on the Droid 3, X2, Bionic, or Razr. They are not defective cables because they do work on some other phones.

I never said that all BB cables or USB cables work.
In your post I first quoted you said BB cables don't work, implying that they all don't work.
The same guy posted the same incorrect information on android forums.com....
Stop wasting money on cables from the verizon store.
No problem here either, I've used cables as different as
2 metre könig usb cable with fake gold plating (really cheap brand)
0,7 metre cheap plastic cable I found in a box at work
The two original moto cables
A hair thin samsung original cable
If you're on a laptop, that's probably your problem. Or your front USB if it's a desktop.
I too have used numerous MicroUSB cables without any issues.

How to plug flash drive into photon

I dont think it's possible. A computer reads the phone when it's plugged in but the phone doesnt read the computer so I dont see it reading a flash drive either.
Ive seen that you supposedly can, and would like to give it a shot. Here is an app that supposedly will, im just struggling with the physical aspect of plugging one into my photon..

Is this the case for external hdd powered by USB only? Or just normal USB flash drives also?
Most OTG capable devices (again I don't think the Photon is one) only supply about 100mA. This is barely enough to power flashdrives. Only low power flashdrives work, beyond that most usb devices that are powered by usb only will not even turn on.
In short if your usb device powers up and works using only an OTG cable, consider yourself lucky.

Charging Cable

I got my GS3 and was rather pleased until I went to root it--I realized the charger that I received with it was not the stock charger that comes with most phones. I can't connect it to my computer to drag stuff onto the SD card, etc (like the Rezound charging cable allowed). Could I find one of these cables at Walmart? If so, what would it be called?

Yeap it's definitely Micro USB, the plug is multifunction and shaped like the HDMI/USB cable but it's also regular micro USB friendly, just use quality cables to keep from wearing out the input over time.
