How to fine-select text? - XPERIA X10 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys,
I'm wondering, when I make a typo on my X10, how do I fine-select the text? I can tap, but it usually places the cursor at the wrong place and since we don't have a trackball: how do we fine-select (as in move the cursor 1 place to the left or right).
I tried the volume keys, but it doesn't work.. is it even possible?
Thanks in advance!

same issue
i have the same issue. i can get it prty close within a few charioteers ill just erase up to the point and re type ><

depends on the keyboard ur using i suppose. i use the standard android keyboard b/c it has the left and right arrows in the corner making it easier to tap on the line of txt that needs editing and then moving the cursor to the correct position ...

that's weird im using the default keyboard and i have no such arrows

The other option is that you can tap and hold your finger to drag the cursor left or right along the text. With a little practice, you can make this work very efficiently.

If you have the htc ime keyboard, you can go into its settings and set the cursor to be moved by the volume keys. I did this and its very helpful.

Thats odd, i cannot do that at all...

if using swype you can just drag the swype key onto the SYM key to bring up editing mode (they are both on the bottom left of the keyboard)

I am obviously being particularly dim tonight cos I can't find this. Where is it!?!?!

To use volume keys to move your cursor with the htc keyboard do the following....
Settings > Locale & Text > HTC_IME settings > User Interface > Volume Keys and select "Move Cursor"

OMGosh I knew it would be so simple. Thank you, I thought I'd opened everything and looked. Oh well it had been a long day! And its sooo cool too. Cheers.

Keyboards with Arrow Keys ??

Are there any keyboards available with arrow keys ?
When editing files, it can be difficult to press at exactly the right point in the file to put the cursor.
Thanks !
Thumb Keyboard offers arrow keys.
In my opinion, it's THE best onscreen keyboard for the Nook anyway.

What he said
I like Smart Keyboard. It has a free trial/nag version. Don't forget to install the dictionary for it too.
I've got ultra keyboard and love it. Its got arrow keys, copy paste keys and much more. I highly recommend it

Keyboards seem to be like olives in terms of the superlatives of their names:
- Better
- Ultra
- Smart
- Swift
the only one bucking the trend is:
- Thumb

Ironically, to the best of my knowledge, the tablet version does not., except when not in split mode. My vote goes to thumb keyboard.
SlideIT Keyboard has arrow keys.
Swype (my personal favorite) has arrow keys... just swype from the Swype button to the Sym button and the editing keyboard with arrows, cut, paste, etc. comes up.

OMG, I have been so frustrated with Swype on the NC because I missed Ultra Keyboard's arrow keys. I had no idea that editing keyboard was there!

I didn't find it in mine. But I just bought Thumb and it's way better in landscape mode. The thumb thing is natural for holding the Nook. Maybe I'll use Slideit in portrait. By the way Thumbs is less than half the price.
Since nobody mentioned it yet, the Notion Ink keyboard (Available through this section) has a very traditional desktop keyboard layout, including arrow keys where you would expect them.
It's one of the, if not THE, best free keyboard available. And quite frankly, I think it beats Thumb Keyboard as well.

[Q] arrow keys on virtual keyboard

is there a way of modifying the keyboard layout to include arrow keys in it...
I miss arrow keys and ctrl key a lot.
please suggest ...
move over to swype.. you get arrow keys on there.
This is the one and only feature im missing from SE's 1.6 ROM, the arrows on the keyboard lol.
Why did they have to go and remove those
because now they have the scroll above the keyboard and you can move the sentence instead of moving the scroll!!!

It's been awhile since I've used it but, if I remember correctly, you need to swipe from the swipe key to Sym key.
That works
however not the most elegant of solutions.
i found one more solution Thumb keyboard.
that also looks good.

I found a free solution i.e. full keyboard layout is good a lot of key combination which is generally required however it misses the autocorrection of standard keyboard.
can anyone suggest how to get the best of both.

[Q]Lack of Search Button

This isn't a too much of a big deal, but curiosity kills me. Since the SGS 2 looks like it lacks a dedicated search button, I wonder if it has a substitute?
What I appreciated on my Nexus One is the search button which is excellent to Google something on the fly and to activate Voice Search. So I'm just wondering if the SGS 2 will have something to generate a quick search or if the U.S. variants will have search buttons?
like the first galaxy S i9000 , you will be able to long press the menu button to simulate the search button
And for the voice search double pressing the home button will do the trick as seen on the vids floating the web
Search seems like the biggest waste of.a button ever. Never missed it on the i9000 at all.

I never used my search-button as it is now, but if the menu-button long-press is assigned to search, how do you switch on and off the on-screen keyboard?
On other android-devices a long-press of the menu-button will activate/deactivate the on-screen keyboard.

I have a Hero, never ever have I had to long press the menu button to get the keyboard up/down. It comes up when it's needed, it disappears with a press of the "hide keyboard" button or the back button!

The hide keyboard button is only on HTCs Sense keyboard no? It's certainly not there on the stock android keyboard.
I've had instances where the keyboard blocked part of the screen and if I had pressed the back button the program would've closed/gone to a previous screen and I wouldn't have been able to do what I wanted without pulling down the keyboard with a long press of the menu-button.
It might not be a big problem or something that occurs often, but it can be annoying and that's why I ask.

You just hit the "Back" button to hide the keyboard
As he just explained, in certain programs (very few) pressing the "back" button to switch off the on-screen keyboard can quit the progrmam you are actually using. But samsung made a very neat trick for that since the first version of the Galaxy S i9000, just swipe down from the upper part of the keyboard to the bottom and the keyboard will disappear, no need for a specific button. I find it very intuitive personnaly, and in the same situation you can also swipe left or right in the keyboard area to switch from letters to numbers view back and forth.
That is an excellent feature. Do any other phones do this?
I don t know any other phone that do so natively, but there is some third party keyboards that copied that (just like CyanogenMod and everyone else copied the wifi, bluetooth etc toggles in the notification bar) "smart keyboard" or "better keyboard" I think.
Meh, I love the design but I love my search button; using Vlingo, I can hold the button and tell my phone to do whatever I want, much better than tgr default Google voice command app.
Sent from my Nexus One using XDA Premium App
That's no big deal, you can easily fix it with a third party app.
And btw it's a matter of time for Android 2.4 Ice cream to come.. and there are rumors that it won't need buttons at all...

Doubtful... Why would I want screen real estate taken up with buttons? It works on a tablet, It would be nonsensical on a phone.
samsung hasn't actually officially confirmed if there will be a 2.4 update...

I dont think u can do that
YES i THINK you can do this, you have to re map the buttons to do what the other one was doing.......i would assume its kind of like when a dev makes the menu button the mutie task button even that function was binded to the home key.
a dev would have to do it though, i have no clue on the actual recoding.
Use this!
I used to use it in my xperia play which had a useless search button which i set it to be camera....

[Q] [MOD] Replace menu button with recents

Since Android 4.0, Google has declared war on the menu button and all devices come out with Recents - Home - Back buttons.
Samsung for some reason decided to move forward with the menu button.
Would it be easy to remap the left capacitive button and make it show the recents instead of the menu action?
Does it really bother you that much to keep the hardware-button pressed down for like 1 second to display the 'Recent' list?

It bothers me, that much
It bother me that much as well - it's just slow.
I think I'd prefer the mod to be double-click home button though, since I rarely use S Voice and it's no hassle to find and click the icon for it whenever I want to use it.
This bothers me too
Would be nice to have it on the menu button. Even an app/shortcut on the homescreen for it would be nice.
I wonder also if there is a way to limit the recent lists as well, if I don't check it sometimes the list can be massive - would be nice to limit this to like 5 items or something.
Olywa
Anyone who used the CM10 on screen nav buttons, knows how much better it is to have the recents key available on a beast like the sgs3.
I wish we could change it but I am afraid this will never be possible on a samsung rom

That's half working. It does work as APP_SWITCH but Android doesn't recognize the lack of the MENU button so it's doesn't show the settings buttons that are needed in most applications.
cm10 has implemented the button remap feature. now you can easily change the menu button long press to recent apps in cm10
