Hi all,
My SGSII heat up alot while charging. (for exactly i charge when phone have only 8%). The heat is not normal. It's more heat than while playing game.
And also it got high temp while using wifi and internet browsing between these days. Do you guys face the same problem?
SGSII is really great . But it heat up alot while playing game and turn on wifi.
Mine is a bit warm in the battery area when I begin charging the phone. But I wouldn't call it "extremely hot".
Another case is when I browse the web (that has flash) it feels a bit warm near the camera area (should be the CPU). Have not played games though.
There has been a discussion going on about that. It seems that some apps (eg Robo Defense) are not properly coded for the dual core. In addition some members also hinted, that the kernel is not yet optimized to compensate for that. The whole discussion started after a guy has "fried" his SG2 (beyond repair) while playing a game and charging at the same time. The phone still worked on AC power but no longer and battery and was unable to charge battery.
My recommendation would be,
- not to play games to long to heat up the device to much before new firmware is out.
- ...or use cet CPU to downthrottle to 500-800 MHZ
If the device heats up while charging I would try rebooting it (to get rid of processes which may still are open) or preferably charging while switched off

Which firmware are you using? I was on KF2, and experienced the phone heating up while playing games.
Updated to KF3 (stock, using Kies) rooted and all was well again. Even with excessive gaming, constant wifi on etc the phone just gets mildly warm.
There's no need to underclock etc. The heating issues just went away with KF3. If that firmware is not yet available in your area on Kies, then just put a newer custom ROM (Darky/Lite'ning/Villian etc) and try it out.
I remember whatsapping with some friends and I noticed my pocket felt really really hot. I checked and saw Whatsapp crashed. Also my battery sucked up about 30%. The phone was too hot to touch. I instantly took out the battery too let it cool down.
I never had that since. I expect it's resolved too, because I have KG1 now.
my firmware is KF2. now i decided to upgrade to KG1. is it stable now? any recommend rom?
As long as it stays below 50°C it is perfectly NORMAL.
And besides there is NO heat up issues with this phone.
Regards.
Hello
My s2 heated up alot too
so much so that it melted my simcard whilst it was on charge
also got led burn marks,
sent it to samsung lets see what they do 4 me
I already upgraded to XXKG1 and still heat up alot while playing pottery game.
This is why from the factory apple underclock their cpu's.
Samsung got the crazy idea of overclocking an already power hungry cpu.
A phone that gets too hot to touch under normal use is not fit for purpose

Hello all,
Recently i bought Razr XT910 (1 month ago). Because of failure on power button on first handset, provider exchanged it with new handset, now everything is ok except..
On both handsets comes up overheating issue when i was using HSDPA/3G network data for internet surfing. In 20-30 minutes back side and front side (LCD) comes very hot. Application for battery temp shows in idle cca 27C after 30 minutes just web browsing comes up to and over 40C.
This never happen if i play games, watch videos. Also heating is not present if i access and browse over internet on WIFI connection. And i didnt root phone yet and i already done factory defaults.
Has anyone experienced the same problem? Any suggestions?
Specific of my phone:
651.73.30.XT910.NonEFIGSRetail.en.EU
Android Version: 2.3.5
SPU: 11 M1-2
Radio Version: U_03.1C.85P
Bootloader Version: 0A.67
Webtop version: WT-2.0.0-113
Thanks
Try to use the phone at different places. Check the signal reception. Low reception means higher transmitting power needed. So, more power needed and makes the battery and transmitter circuit work harder.

Thanks for reply. I tried this at work where i have full signal HSDPA (antena is 100 meters away and signal is very good), and at home i have very good signal on 3G network. I am not sure that the signal strenght is reason for heating... What about Radio Version: U_03.1C.91P, what improvements does it have?
I am on Asia GSM , HSDPA with 85P baseband. Everyday I download several podcasts from twit.tv and it is getting warm, but it cools back to normal after the download is finished.
Check any background process which may uses Internet connectivity all the time.
You can check signal strength at Settings. - About - Status

Normally you see high temps with heavy 4G LTE/CDMA phones. Haven't heard of many GSM phones on any brand ever overheating. May want to return it again. Sounds faulty to me, and the hotter you run, the worse your battery life will be.
@got556
I read about phones 4G LTE/CDMA with high temps, but as far as i know my phone is 3G (gsmarena). Mybe it is faulty, but this is second one with same issue.
@bahathir
can you mesure and post here battery temp while dowloanding or surfing internet for 30 minutes? Mine also cool down when surfing is finished, but meanwhile...it worries me.
I will check background services for activity.
Started at CPU temp : 31.5 degree Celsius. I am using OS Monitor app.
Opened YouTube and watched one of the clips in TheAlexJonesChannel. At the end of 7 minutes clip, CPU temperature was 35 degrees Celsius.
Next 15 minutes clip, temperature was 37 degree Celsius.
Another 15 minutes clip, the temperature was 38 degree Celsius.
Signal strength : -89 dBm. WCDMA only mode
Room temperature : 26 degree Celsius.
Now, it cools as nothing was happened.

I wouldn't call it was overheating since your case is normal. If you surf 30minutes nonstop over wcdma, any phone will get noticebly hotter but it wouldn't like you can't touch it.

What he said. An active mobile data connection will produce a lot of heat, especially when using 3G. When on 4G, your phone is using up a much smaller portion of the total available bandwidth so the radio doesn't have to work as hard, whereas over 3G your device and radio have to work much harder to maintain the necessary data rate.
This can be compounded by factors like ambient temperature, GPU accelerated applications (browser), the physical layout of the device's hardware, and even how you hold your phone while using it.
The good news is, 40°C is not a 'dangerous' temperature level for your battery. Given how high your ambient/idle temperatures are, you're really not generating that much more heat.
In general, I don't think you have to start worrying about Li-Ion batteries until they hit about 45-50°C (don't quote me on that), at which point you start running into issues like thermal runaway and damage to the battery.
Hope that helps.

Sorry, double post, but this is important:
Every Android device I've worked with will generate MUCH more heat when connected to AC power (there is a scientific term for this phenomenon, but the name escapes me). With rooted devices, I tend to account for this by creating an underclocked profile in SetCPU for when the device is plugged in.

Hi all.. My Razr XT910 touches 45° when I play games like angry birds or similar ones..is it considered normal?

Hi guys,
I am sorry for (very) late reply Recently i hit 44°C with active web browsing (facebook, news pages...) and i didnt watch any movies in about 20 minutes. The phone was really hot and it was very uncomfortable to hold it and touch it. In the meantime i contacted motorola support. After their advise i set phone to factory defaults and then i also exchange micro sim card (for free) just in caseif there is any problem with it. But problem is still present. So i decided to take phone to repair centre. They tested the phone for a few days and they said the phone is working normally. They also reflashed my current SW....On friday i got phone back and problem is still here...Now I wonder how they tested the phone and what is for them to normal operation. And i am also stuck at SW version. Does anyone know what are differences betwen GB,FR,DE, NonEFIGS and other versions? Is there just language difference or is also hardware diferences?
I am also worried what will happen in summer with high temperatures outside..
Well, I don't think is something unusual... Its same like your laptop - if the system is busy and the processor has lot of work, it gets simply hot..
Keep in mind that the razr has two cores and if you are playing games or watching movies or even browsing web containing some flash etc. it may get hot because the cores are running at 1,2ghz and it generates heat...
I don't think its something surprising and you will face it with every nowadays smartphone..
If the temperature don't get down after few minutes the phone is idle, check if there is some stuck process because it seems that most likely there is something running on background...
I personally use the System Tuner which gives me a great overview about the current phone's load etc...
@maarawoe
i undarstand what you are trying to say. But web browsing over WIFI does not generate that much heat, the phone gets a little warm not hot as on mobile data (aprox. 35-36°C) and also when playing angry birds or something dos not get that hot.
As i said i am just concerned what will happen on summer time.I hope that the phone will not explode
I will try that app to see more details what is happening with system.

WiFi hotspots are usually 100m away at most; but since the range from cell towers can be measured in kilometres/miles, the power needed to talk to them is much higher. Some of this power is lost as heat. All devices with HSPA and LTE radios get somewhat hotter when the data connection is used heavily.
Recently trouble shot this same problem for someone else. Try this:
1) Turn off Wi-Fi
2) Go into wireless settings and DELETE the saved profile for the Wi-Fi network you're using (make sure you know the network key first)
3) Turn on Wi-Fi, reconnect to the network.
High temperatures are common under certain conditions, such as being connected to AC power, using multiple radios simultaneously (ex: GPS + 4G), CPU/GPU intensive applications, and of course high ambient temperature.
45°C is not dangerously high, but can indicate other problems. Anything higher than 50°C and you may start experience issues like thermal runaway (battery rapidly discharges).

Hi, thanks for replies.
@JPtheSmith - high temperatures are present only browsing net over 3G (we dont have 4G..yet). Even if Wifi is turned off. If i use Wifi for web i dont get so high temperatures. And the ambient where i use my phone is around 20-25°C. Maybe there is some incompatibility between phone gsm module and provider network. I will try to get another provider sim and check it.
I had a long talk with Verizon tech support about high temperatures.
The main causes.
1. Bad signal area, makes the phone work harder.
2. Running to many apps. To many Background apps can and will over-tax your phone.
3. Last but not least, HD games will max out your phones resources.
I'm uploading a video to my Facebook account and the back of the phone up by the camera is burning hot. It's like putting a wet rag in a microwave for 1 min on high. But when the video stops uploading, you can actually feel it cooling down. Has anyone felt this before? Can my phone be defective? Can someone try uploading a 2 min video to Facebook and let me know if their phone gets super hot?

I've noticed some heat issues as well....currently rooted and under locked to 1ghz, haven't noticed it since
My daily commute to work is about 33 miles. On the drive to work, I usually have the phone connected to a 12V USB charger (not sure of the charging rate, but I'll guess 0.5 A) while talking on the phone using the bluetooth hands free that is built into the car while using Waze (data and GPS) for traffic info. Thats a LOT to be going on when the phone is charging, using both data and voice, GPS, and bluetooth. It gets VERY HOT. Sometimes I'll pick it up and hold it in front of the air conditioning vent to cool it down. I've actually heard random noises over the bluetooth while on a call that is very loud and I'm wondering if heat is causing the noise to occur. Seems to be normal though, my last phone (HTC Diamond, Windows Mobile 6.5) would get really hot with heavy data usage while charging. Never really seemed to be a problem. I was hoping to find a car dock that clips onto the air conditioning vent so the phone can constantly be cooled while in use.
My phone also gets very hot. It only happens if I'm in a very weak signal area and.I'm either doing heavy gaming or heavy web browsing. Both of which take a pretty heavy toll on battery life. There have been times though were I will just stop whatever I'm doing and just let it cool off for a bit though...doesnt take to long for it to cool down.

I was using my phone as a GPS and an audio source during a 3 hour trip to Rehoboth beach and had it attached to a 450 mA car charger. First of all, the charger was not powerful enough to actually charge the phone as I would actually lose juice during the trip and the phone would actually tell me it used more energy than it replenished. Second, I'm guessing because there was not enough current to charge and bypass the battery, there was a lot of current flow through the battery. Combining with the heat of the radio trying to grab weak 3G signals in the rural areas of the trip, my evo started flashing an alternating green and red. Awkwardly, the user manual has no mention of this notification state, but I assumed it was an overheated battery (the phone was getting scarily hot). As soon as I unplugged the charger, the notification light would return to normal and the phone would cool down.
Anyway, point of the story is, the phone will at least warn you when the battery is getting too hot. I wouldn't worry too much about the radios, but yes my antennas do get pretty hot especially in poor reception areas.

I use Waze as well every morning and afternoon for a 35 mile each way commute and it does get hot just using that app. Luckily I use the Bracketron - Grip-iT Mobile Device Holder from Best Buy, on sale for $13.99 right now. It just clips on the A/C vents and when the A/C is on, the phone is never hot while using the app. The only bad thing is the placement of the USB port on the phone but I can still plug in using this holder. Hope it helps!
this CPU is clocked the same as CPU's in some old PCs and some current laptops and it has no cooling, plus the heat from the radios etc, pretty sure the only way to offset the heat is to under clock it or don't buy a super phone. all my smartphones back to the mogul have all gotten hot, actually i remember my old i870 flip phone got hot when in long phone calls
My evo also gets very hot... So hot it starts to burn my leg when it's in my pocket at work. Also the screen has started to separate from the body, im assuming the glue is melting because when you press the screen on the left side you can hear it click back into place. Can I get this replaced under the warranty?

I just picked up the car dock over the weekend and it gets even hotter (sitting in the sun and having less air circulation behind the phone). When I parked to get out of the car it almost hurts to touch the phone its so hot. I ordered a new mount for the car dock that will put it right in front of an air conditioning vent so hopefully that will help to cool it down. I've also read that if you have an under powered 12V charger it will cause it to get hot. Going to try a different charger with the dock and see what happens.
When someone here gets one of these could they please let us know what the battery life is like?
I know nokia says 400 hours standby but standby figures are kinda plucked out of the air since smart phones, i'm sure mine has 200h plus but realistically 2g, everthing turned off I can get around 4 days use of it when only using it for calls/txts. I nreal world upto 2 days, 1 day if I use it a lot.
I know its not real world use, but sometimes when i'm away in area's with no access to a charger I like to know I can last a couple of days without it dieing on me!
Cnet claims that it drops to 25% after just 4 hours of heavy usage. If this is true I would never buy it and it would be a real shame. Lumia 800 had same issues many months after launch and even after numerous software updates it is still not up there.Working at Nokia so I've seen my fair share of lumia failure...Really hope the 920 delivers.

Was that test with 4g on? i'm assuming with 4g it constantly searches for the network. If simply turning 4g off gives a nice boost to battery i'll be happy with that, personally i'm fine 90% of the time with 2g speeds.
My current phone gets just under 2 hours use in navigon at full charge. I know generally you have a car charger in car, but its the only way generally I use to measure how long the battery lasts.
I remember my first smart phone would power tomtom for around 5 hours on one charge, sure the screen was smaller and the processor was slower, but it was still perfectly usable. I suppose 320x240 would feel very wierd now tho...

Is this really that bad? Because this would mean you'll get about 8 hours with half the battery on heavy usage (assuming linear discharging). I'd think that is pretty good.
I currently own Samsung Focus (1st Gen) and I get about 26 hrs or so on moderate to low usage.
Unless they mean 4 hours straight gaming or watching a movie that is a lie.
I've had my phone for 6 hours using it pretty much none stop. Downloading lots, taking pictures/video, trying maps/gps, wifi on but not connected, no LTE but "4g", placed a few calls, dozens of text, full settings/setup, etc etc. This was from the phone coming out of the box at ~50% charged and I am at 19%.
Just got it so I will report back in a few days and see how it goes.
I've had mine for a week now and I have to say Im a heavy user - maybe because of that Im not too happy with the battery. I have to charge it after 7 or 8 hours but I do have bluetooth on, wifi on, 3g on, push email, facebook updates etc on all the time. As an Ipad owner I thought it might be on a par with that for battery life but it isnt....
I use my phones enough that I am use to charging them every day. I have yet to have a smart phone that would last me 2 days. This phone so far fits right in there, no worse no better. Haven't had it long enough to be a final decision though.
Yesterday I had it unplugged from 7am to 11:30pm and it was at 29%. This was with wifi off, BT off. Lots of usage, played a bunch of Angry Birds:SW, lots of texts/app downloads/heavy camera usage/etc...
In the end unless it makes it to the next morning at above ~55% it really doesn't matter, I'm going to have to charge it. All that matters to me is that i can make it through a day and so far this phone seems like it will be able to do that no problem. If you spent a heavy day of gaming and movies I suspect you would find yourself needing to charge again but that is inline with every other smartphone on the market unfortunately.
I've had the phone 72 hrs now. I previously had the 900, Focus S. I run my phone with bt, and WiFi on. I do not turn off lte or 4g. If the phone charge lasts from 6am till 330, then its good for me.
As with many new phones battery life in the first few weeks is not really accurate. Currently my 920 exhibits the same traits the 900 did.
I do light music and games, heavy internet and social contact, medium texting, but virtually no phone calls. As of now, this puts me in the 40-50% range. I expect it will get better as I stop experimenting with themes, lock screens and tile arrangements.
I've been able to use the Lumia 920 for one full day now and this is my battery information:
The information i'm about to put out is with; text messaging, internet, couple of phone calls, 15 minute gameplay, more surfing the internet
The battery information can be found ' Settings -> Battery Saver -> Battery Info '
Battery info:
Remaining battery life: 47%
Estimated time remaining: 3 days 3 hours (obviously meaning standby time)
Time since last charge: 20 hours
I took the phone off the charger at around 10pm last night and haven't used the charger since then.
My battery drains real fast. I think its down to 2 reasons: 1.data connection speed is set to 4G. 2.Loads of background apps running.
I dont have 4G in my area so the phone is swithing to 3G sometimes even poor 3G signal which makes it go to 2G. so if its constantly switching network signals that will drain battery fast. my Lumia has no option to keep it only on 2G, but i can change to 3G or 4G. If i could change it to 2G i guess the battery would last all day with no problems.
turning off background apps can also help reduce battery consumption.
btw i have a Lumia 920 bought from Phones4u using a TMobileUK sim
Ive had the 920 from the MS Build conference for a few weeks now.
1. I turned off NFC (tap to send). No need for it.
2. I turned off Bluetooth, unless I actually need it.
3. I ride the train for an hour to work, and an hour home, and use the internet sharing pretty much the whole way with my Surface.
4. I have it set to pull email from 3 different accounts, with it set to get items as they arrive, and I get a lot of email throughout the day.
5. The area I live in is all LTE.
6. I leave wifi turned on all the time, as I have it at home and at work.
7. I make a few calls during the day each day, but maybe only 20 or 30 total minutes at most.
I've found the battery life after a few weeks now to be excellent. Even after an hour of internet sharing on the train, it has only used 7% of the battery. Battery life seemed shorter during the first week or two, so i'm guessing everyone else will have similar results as the batteries get conditioned. I haven't had a problem with it running out of power before the end of the day. Early on it did, but it has gotten much better,

After a week, today , this is what I see also. My phone comes off the charger when full, last night it was 11:15pm. The charge sits at 85% with 40 hrs estimated time remaining.
I have BT, WiFi, Tap to Send on. I have gone into background tasks and blocked anything I don't want running. I have noticed that Nokia Drive+BETA, when on, really drains the battery, as does streaming from XBOX Music Cloud. So Nokia drive is blocked in background tasks and I do have Cloud Music turned off.
I drained the battery to under 10% last night....I'll try to push it tonight to get further.
But overall, I'm happy with the battery. I know I have some wiggle room with turning off BT and Tap to Send if I want.
Another day, another test.

The battery life is non-existent for me (dies in hours) and the phone heats up incredibly quickly. I did head down to Docomo to check if there is an issue but the technicians said that the battery is perfectly fine and the phone heats up cos its waterproof and hence doesn't have good ventilation.
Anyone has any luck with fixing these issues?
battery drain
Hi!
Yes i had the same problem my battery went down from 100% to 5-6 % in the matter of about 3-4 hours.I did find the problem (at least in my case) the native "mail" app draws all the power out constantly looking for new mail.I stopped the program (couldn't delet because i'm not rooted yet) and all the problems are gone. Now i go from 100% at 8 in the morning to about 25% at 8 at night with moderate use.Try it i hope it will help!
I have similar battery problem on my phone F-02E and I believe it is the tegra 3 processor. Itt gets so hot and heat drains the battery. When mine heats up to 46 degree, it restarts; I really hate this behaviour.
The phone would have been amazing otherwise.
Anyhow, I will never buy a Tegra phone again, at least not in the forseeable future.
I'm thinking of buying a F-02E just for gaming when I'm on the road, as I want something smaller than a tablet that has a tegra 3 processor (I have THD games purchased from my old tab). Can anyone comment on gaming performance?

Don't make the mistake. Why do you think the price is so low even with the specs. The main problem is that the heat distribution was not well made so the phone gets very hot very quickly and when it is around 38 degrees, you cxan feel it throttling and by the time the temperature gets to 43, it starts restarting.
Afterthought; the scernario I described is when one is connected to 3g internet. If internet is turned off, I think one can play game for a while before it gets hot. However, I will not recommend the phone. Try instead Sharp SH-06E. It is not so expensive anymore.
