These settings are applied on first boot, so changing it after will have no effect.
Modify the settings, wipe user data, re-run initial setup, settings should be applied.

If its for yourself, just replace the cid_map.xml and mns_map.xml with the blank ones in the attached zip, and set the default.xml in the CID and MNS folder.
310410 would be AT&T's default settings. Since I'm not an AT&T user, nor am I fond of them, I do not know the default settings.
http://www.chiasoft.net/apns-conf.zip should have settings for all carriers..

This is only for SenseUI based roms, by HTC. For MMS issues on CM6, go ask cyanogen I believe you can just edit the UA-String directly in the mms app he made.
is it possible to go into good detail as to how to do this?
I am searching for .system/customize and such and dont see it.

I see all the files and folders that are mentioned above. I know what to do, but am unable to do this. I am trying to make these file changes using a file explorer on the phone itself. I can see the files but cannot change them. So I try to do this on the PC, but cannot get to the root directory. Please help! Thanks.

these files changed:
.\oem\extendedpkg\connection.xml
.\oem\extendedpkg\mxipupdate_oemoperators_101.provxml
.\oem\oemdrivers\rilphone.dll\s000
.\oem\oemversion\mxipupdate_oemversion_100.provxml
connection.xml and mxipupdate_oemoperators_101.provxml both have this change:
Code:
<!--20090421 add this to prevent popup message request by Paco-->
<parm name="RequirePw" value="0" />
rilphone.dll did not correctly read timezone in 1.08.573.1, the rilphone.dll change in 1.08.573.2 is probably this fix
mxipupdate_oemversion_100.provxml changed to show 1.08.573.2 as the version.
thats it.
does this have the already available 1.12.31 radio or different?

Has anyone successfully programmed MMS for cricket using this technique?
I'm going to try mmsproxy=wap.mycricket.com and port 8080 and see what happens...
u need to be on 2.1 and use mmszap google it and change those settings to wat ur provider is and you should be able to send out mms. i have successfully done it on crickets network..
You can use apn backup and restore. I have attached the apn to restore for cricket mms. I tried to post but it said something about posting outside links?
Anyway the only thing that needs to be changed is [email protected]. Change this to your [email protected] and after backing up your apns, restore this to the phone.
Change file name from mms.xml.zip to mms.xml.

Thanks for the file. I will take a look...
Sorry I forgot to add that you need to delete apns before restore. Make sure you have a backup of the original.
I thought we should all collaborate & make a complete apn list.It will be very useful to rom chefs to add it their rom so users won't have to be bothered to re-enter apn details they flash each times.Pre loaded APN list is in system\etc\apns-conf.xml file.Post your apn info in this pattern and I will update first post weekly with all the apn details posted in the thread.
Here is the example apn structure that you should use to post your carriers apn details.
Code:
<apn carrier="Android"
mcc="310"
mnc="995"
apn="internet"
user="*"
server="*"
password="*"
mmsc="null"
/>
APN list
Update- Added a nice database thanks to jjdoctor :good:
http://paste2.org/p/2062394
if your apn data is missing from this database post here,I will update
One might think why is this posted in dev section,reason is this will be a nice reference list for rom chefs.
so you can use that to fix APN?

attached it... not a flashable zip, just copy file apn-conf.xml to system/etc folder of ur Flashable ROM ...

It seems the normal way to rid yourself of the carrier text is via an Xposed Framework module, which you will have to check to see if Xposed can run on your device.
If you are feeling brave then this seems to be the only possible way to do it without Xposed:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1773879
It involves decompiling the SystemUI.apk and replacing some values in /res/layout/status_bar.xml with a zero, then recompiling and replacing the original.
You need to weigh up the risks and decide if you feel it is worth it. I'd love to remove it from one of my devices but I'm not that bothered to take the risk for something like this.
*I'll be very interested (and pleased) if anyone can find a simpler way to achieve this, especially one where we just edit something in build.prop, local.prop or similar...

Problem Solved..!!
A new member named Ghoulie posted a link to a small app called "Carrier Changer" that allows for the carrier label to be easily changed.
It looks like it only works on some phones and unfortunately I don't have an SGS5A to test it so I can't say if it'll work for you guys, but luckily it did the job perfectly on my phones.
I ended up using a single space instead of a character, looks great with the whole left side of the status bar clean and clear...
Here is a direct download link to the latest version of Carrier_Changer_1.16.9.apk:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=1711871&d=1360266843
Thanks is due to the guy who made the app back in 2011 http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=901865 and to XDA for hosting the thread which discussed it until around 2013, but it seems it was forgotten after that, and it has not been worked on since then.
*If anyone is curious where the download link above comes from please see this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=37634835
