Microphone Echo? - Fascinate Android Development

Was wondering if anyone gets an echo back when they're on the phone. I know we don't have noise cancelling, but I tried on two phones already and I get my own voice thrown back at me. Hardware? or possible software fix?

Hmm, dunno exactly what causes it, but I fear it's hardware. This phone has a rather hollow feel to it (unlike my Droid Eris, which was built like a brick). The noise from the vibrator on the phone seems to echo a bit inside the chassis, and I'm suspicious that the voice echo effect is something similar. But, I could very well be wrong. Let's hope it is software, and that it will be fixed with the Froyo upgrade.

yea i hate it..

Yeah i returned my first phone 10 minutes later to get the second one that does the same thing, it seems to go away though about 30 seconds into the calll. I really am not fond of it whatsoever and almost returned the phone permanently the same day. I know everyone has it because I tried different phones. Just don't get why this didn't come with froyo and why i should have to wait for froyo to use the dock.

[Q] Calls dropping/Bluetooth disconnecting

I love the Vibrant. Most things work fabulously, however, I'm on my 3rd one (for completely different and unrelated reasons), and this issue just won't go away. It's ironic, all of the whiz-bang functions work flawlessly, but the issues with the basic functioning as a PHONE are getting old. When I'm on the road, more times than not I will be in the middle of a call, and it will plain drop. I NEVER had a call drop with the trusty dusty G1 for almost 2 years. I may have narrowed it down to one of 3 things, but they are not consistent: 1) If I have rebooted and forget to turn off the "auto update of time" function, and it does it's thing, it drops then. If I get another call while I'm on a call, it will do it then. If I'm using Google Voice, it seems to happen even more frequently. The other annoying thing is that every day, at least several times a day, I will try to make or answer a call and the Bluetooth will have plain disconnected randomly. I have Jabra JX10's for both home & the car. Is there anyone else who has had these issues, and have any insight as to what may be causing them? It did both when I had just gotten each, so I can't see that it's the ROM, kernel or lagfix. I've asked this before, and I hate to use the "F" (Froyo) word, but if it comes, will it include a new/stronger radio that maybe the issues will be solved? Oh yeah, one final thing, and this may be solely Google Voice related, but often when a call drops or fails to connect, if I try to make another, I hear an ear piercing ridiculous static sound until I reboot. Someone please tell me that I am not the only one who has ever had these issues and that my phone is possessed by aliens. TIA...

[Q] Microphone problem with eris. Hoping someone can help with a workaround.

Hardware related bug, hoping to bypass it completely.
Started happening about 2 months ago.
problem: When headphones/bluetooth are not connected, my microphone on the phone will not work. When either are connected, both the headphone/bluetooth microphone are working at the same time. I've been using bluetooth to place calls this entire time, Person on the other end gets a constant echo, if I cover up the phone microphone the echo stops(and they only hear what comes from the bluetooth headset).
I've flashed multiple roms, it seems to me like this is hardware related, but for the life of me I can't figure out how this seems to have got reversed in functionality (microphone on the phone should mute when headset is attached, not unmute)
Anyways, I'm perfectly fine using bluetooth, I never use my microphone on my phone for voice searches (I'm a southerner, it just doesn't work... yall.) i also never record videos. So, anyone know how I can keep the phone microphone muted full time?
That sucks
The same thing happened to my fiance's eris. I tried everything i could think of... its a hardware issue. She also had a problem with her track ball at the same time, it would not scroll down, only up left and right. She ended up getting a new phone, because nothing else worked. Sorry for your luck. Let me know if you find a fix.

Thanks for the response. I'm 100% sure its a hardware problem. If I cant figure out a way to permanently mute the onboard microphone im going to buy a dead eris and just replace the little board with the usbport/microphone. If that doesnt fix it, I will see if it will boot up with that board removed completely. (have a battery only charger already.)
But before I do either, I would love it if one of the genius' around here (no disrespect, some smart folks on these forums) responded with a way to permanently mute it.
10 day bump in hopes that someone knows something that didnt see it. Wont do it again. *crosses fingers*

[Q] Rattling started...

Yesterday, all of a sudden, my SGS2 started rattling when vibration is on. Rattling is extremely loud and comes from left-from-camera part of the phone. It's not the back cover cause it rattles without a cover as well. When I touch that part, rattling stops. Does anyone know what is it (I didn't drop the phone or did anything to cause it)?
Thank you!
I noticed this as soon as I reached home after buying the phone last November. Just played with it a bit and--WHAM. I get this weird, sort of rasping robotic noise when its on vibrate. It sounds like the phone has a cold or something...if that makes sense at all. I suspect something is loose around the camera area. Do you still have the problem...cause I do. It didn't bother me at first but now its just annoying.

Issue with my HTC Rezound

I got my Rezound right after Black Friday, and have had it about 6 days.
My fiance and her dad both complain that my voice sometimes goes in and out for a bit sometimes, making it hard to hear me, or not hearing me at all. At the same location I wipe out my incredible and it does fine, for a phone call that last 2 hours. This has happened quite a few times.
This isnt isolated to just my apartment, it happens everywhere i guess. I have an HTC Incredible that never gives me this issue.
I've pulled the battery, did a factor reset, did a prl update, but nothing seems to fix the problem. And of course the problem isnt consistent since it happens whenever it wants.
I noticed the phone also has a mic on the back, so I have tried to hold the phone differently to see if thats an issue, but the problem still happens.
Anyone else with the same issue? Amazon said they would just ship me another phone. I guess I will chalk this up to a hardware issue.
That was pretty much the only issue i've had, so I'm praying that the one they send isnt one having some of the other issues i've been reading about.
Could just be a faulty phone. But I have seen a review state that it happened to him too, could just be a bad batch. You never want to do a PRL update with 4G phones, *228 is not necessary for these devices. Also by doing *228 on a 4G device, you have a chance of frying your SIM chip. I'd say give the new device a shot and see what happens and if it still cuts out or not. If it still does then it could just be the device needs an update from HTC. I personally have not had this issue happen to me. Hope it works out for you.
I'm really not trying to offend and it sounds like you have tried to deal with this issue already BUT...
Is it possible you could still occasionally be covering up the main mic on the bottom of the phone while holding it? I use my pinky finger on the bottom of the phone to help support it/hold it up and have now had to train myself to be careful not to cover the mic on the bottom of the phone (on my OG Droid it was on the front face of the phone). You may have a real hardware issue with your phone, but maybe do a test where you cover it up on a call to the same people that had trouble hearing you before and ask them if it sounds similar?
Good luck!
Thanks

You have seen a review that had a posssible bad phone that had problems with his voice being heard too? Do you by chance iknow where I can view that review?
Either way, thanks for the info, and tip on *228. I plan on trying the new device and hopefully it goes well.
Thank you.

Not offended at all. You know I thought that too, so I started watching how I held it. I tried holding it different and nothing changed. The bottom mic im used to since I believe the Incredible had one in the same location.
I also tried to keep my hand somewhat off the microphone on the back also.
I tried covering up mics and was unable to decide if that was the issue. The replacement will be here in 2 days, so i play to play with this one some more till then.
You brought up a good point though, and something that I have been keeping my eye on.
Thanks.

http://www.theverge.com/2011/11/14/2557172/htc-rezound-review is where I saw the comment about the calls. No problem! Hope the 2nd phone doesn't have this issue for you.
I've also had a complaint about this, its only been from one person though. And he as commented on it sounding like I was muffled and he will interrupt and ask how I'm holding it, I was holding the phone normally and not destructively each time :-\ he hasn't said anything about it in a few days though, idk if its the phone or the network lol :-\ but... Ive also had this issue, I'm kind of scared to get another one because of all the other issues some people are having with them.
Edit: also I tried to catch it happening by recording audio for about an hour with my phone in front of the TV and it never happened. So idk :-\

My girlfriend has also began complaining about this.
The only possible explanation I can work up is that I've noticed it happens when my mouth isn't close and directly in front of the mic. So maybe the noise cancelling mic's on the back of the phone are picking up my voice also and therefore cancelling them out.

I also think the same tbh... I'm thinking that one gets too sensitive possibly, because I've been told it happens, when I notice that I talk louder or closer to the mic. And it doesn't do it all the time. Its very limited and random, I think its only happened like 3 or 4 times total, since I've had it... I wonder if it is the noise canceling being too sensitive. I bet a software update would fix it.
I was thinking that If it was the mic messing up it would happen more often. but I made a post about it I think a week or so ago, glad I'm not crazy though :-D
Edit: err.. I just realized my otterbox commuter case covers those back mics. I have a whole in the side at the top where that one is though. I suppose I could be touching that one some how, but what does that one even do lol?

Well at least i'm not alone. Her dad complained about it first, then she did. I've never had this kind of issue, so I assumed it was there phone.
I even called my third's line google voice number and recorded myself walking around talking on the phone, to myself. I'm sure the neighbors might think i'm nuts at this point.
I listened to the recording, and I didnt hear any issues. *sigh* Well, if its how i'm talking into the phone, I don't know what to do about that. I've been talking on the rezound like I have every cell phone that i've ever owned.
I dont 'death grip' the phone, and I hold it like normal. Would hate to think I'd have to baby how I hold the rezound, but eh, anything can happen.
If my next phone does this, I guess I have to decide if I have to listen to her complain, or get a different phone (unless I write HTC and see if they have a fix on the horizon software wise). Bad thing is there is no other phone close to the Rezound right now.
I don't want to deal with a Razr right now, with having a non replaceable battery (by normal means), plus i'm not into motorola.
The holes on the back are NOT mics.
The mic is on the side. Those holes are antenna traces.

Funny story: The day I got my phone I put it together, turned it on, did initial setup, and out of habit from flashing Dinc ROMS every other day for the last year I immediately did a *22899 and it popped up some message basically saying "don't do this" so I'm not even sure it will let you "fry" your SIM chip by doing the update.

[Question] White noise on left channel

Hi guys,
Ever since I flashed a sense less version of ICS (not blaming the ROM here, could be a coincidence), I've been hearing white noise on the left channel when I have headsets on. I tried 2 pairs and I hear the noise with both so I know it's not the headset.
The weird thing is that the noise starts immediately after I power up the phone. I did a battery pull, connected my headset, powered up the phone, and even before the HTC logo comes up, the noise will start.
Not ROM/Software related it seems, but here's the kicker, if I flash a new ROM, the noise goes away but only for a little bit of time, after a bit of usage, it'll come back. If I listen to music, sometimes it goes away, sometimes it just reduces a bit, sometimes nothing changes.
So I doubt it's the phone that's broken, it did happen right after flashing a senseless ICS Rom. I don't want to flash a full RUU yet because there might be a solution out there that doesn't require me to go back to stock so that I can install a full update.
Has anyone experienced this?
In case anyone is interested, I went to the Verizon store and I was told that although this is not a wide spread issue, it is actually a known problem. In some units, constant noise (even as the phone is booting up) will start happening when using the headset.
The person at the store didn't even check my phone, he simply started the process for a warranty replacement.
So if that happens to you, it's not the ROM, it's the phone itself.

Definitely interference from something because the noise changes as I open/close apps or just flip through launcher pages.
I have the same exact issue but my warranty through Verizon is void since I traded my iPhone 4S to someone for the Rezound. Mine was working fine and one day it just started having this issue. Took it in and they told me they couldn't help me since I voided my warranty by trading (plus I don't have insurance on the phone).
Contacted HTC and the told me that it was a known issue and to contact their warranty company to get it replaced/fixed. The warranty is still good on the phone, I just have to send it to NY with a letter explaining my issues. Kinda worried about just putting the phone in a box and sending it on it's way without a paper trail of some sort.
Glad you were able to get your phone replaced. Good to know I'm not the only one here that had this issue.
I also started having this issue, it didn't show up until about a week after having the phone, though. Nice to know it's one of the things covered under warranty that's easy to get worked on, though.
I've had the cpu noise issue on three different Rezounds now, HTC says it's fixable in software. I don't know when we will see a fix though, if ever.
