Q: Wlan not working when using exchange :( - HD2 Windows Mobile 6.5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all,
My HD2 has been setup to receive mails from my work via Microsoft Exchange, but now I can't get my Wlan working... Does anyone know what the problem is and how to solve it?
I have tried search the forums but can't seem to find the answer.
Thanks in advance
Michael

sounds like you have an unrelated problem or the exchange server has enforced a policy to disable the wifi on your device. I would ask your IT department exactly what configuraion they have on the exchange server with regards device policies.
I personally have the same setup as you do and i have no wifi issues but i also know i have no device policies configured on the exchange server because i configured it

Maybe you are right about the policy. I didn't know that could be the problem. Is it possible to "disable" the exchange options when I don't use it, or is it only possible if I delete the settings again?

No. you need to talk to your IT people about it. Simple as that. If they say there is no policies then the problem lies else where. If they say there is a policy that is causing your problem then your screwed

ActiveSync problem

I upgraded to the new a.30.07 and I can not do a wireless Activesync, I get "Synchronization failed. Try again, and if the condition persists, reset your device. Erroe code 0x80004005" I have done a hard reset and retried with out any apps installed and I still get this error message. Has anybody had this probelm and fixed it, or can someone point me in a direction?
TIA
Trub
Did it work before you did the upgrade, if so check your VPN connection settings.
FYI I've never been able to get it to work!

Yeah I got it to work again. I did another hard reset and it started working again. It doesn't use a VPN connection, rather SSL and you have to tell your XDA to accept any SSL certificate, unless you can afford to buy a cert from Verisign.
Great! 8)
I'm interested in seeing your configuration / settings if you're will to post them.

I'm running Exchange 2003 on Windows 2003, by default under the user properities, all Mobile Services are enabled under the Exchange Features tab. Also, your Windows box has to be able to dish out SSL certificates so enable Certificate Services, create a certificate and install it into your default web site. Then you need to install a cab file on your XDA called AS_Cert_OFF.CAB, just Google it. Then in Activesync on the XDA, under options, server enter the server IP and your username, password and domain and then try to sync. Things are different if you are using MIS 2002 with Exchange 2000, as MIS can not reside on the same box as Exchange, and I've never gone down that road.
Here is some good information about troubleshooting the Always-Up-To-Date Notification feature of Exchange 2003.

Connect to Exchange with security certificate

Hi,
I once tried a Hero and wanted to connect it to our companie's exchange server. This forces mobile devices to accept a security certificate which activates a device lock with at least a four digit PIN. This works perfect on windows mobile devices and iPhones. But I gues it was the gesture method of device locking which was not accepted as an appropriate device lock.
Did anybody experience the same and is there a solution for this issue?
I think you can get some help from HTC this time, either by contacting an custom service or by reading their online guide. Because hero use an exchange program from HTC, instead of google's.
Edit: I think when you setup your exchange service, there is a place for you to enter your password, try it and see what would happen.
You might need to get touchdown that is the only thing that works for me.
@jokies: I contacted HTC and they reaplied that there is no solution as this is an Android issue.
@Oofki: Touchdown just seems to be another mail/cal/etc client software for android. I don't think that this is the solution as the issue seems to be with the security certificate which goes for a device lock. This has nothing to do with the email client as such. (Even if I can't try it out as I don't have an android device availabe.)
I can't believe that there is no solution as this kind of security implementation is quite common in big enterprises. Anybody out there with the same experiences and potentially with a solution?
Its works on the current crop of 2.1 roms, I don't use gesture lock but I could setup a alphanumerical password.
aaah, very good news. Hopefully I get a Desire in April and will then be able to connect. thx a lot for the info.

[Q] stock vpn connection bug?

Has anyone successfully made a VPN connection with their rezound? I am trying to connect to a VPN connection known to be working and it says its connected, but I am unable to get internet traffic to go through. (I.e. when I am connected to the VPN, Any app that uses data is unable to find a connection to the internet.) I know it's not on the VPN server side because I am able to connect and get data with another phone.
Any ideas? Thanks in advance!!!
BUMP. no one has tried or can try out VPN for me?
Bump. Not to sound whiney, and but I find it sad that my post can be up for so long without even a single reply. There is a ton of good info in these forums and I'm patiently waiting for s-off just like the average member, but the issue of the vpn hasn't even been looked into by anyone else? I guess my question to any mods would be "what do I have to do to get some attention to an issue I'm having? "

you are so active on the forums, I can't believe your question hasn't been answered yet...
sorry, don't have anything to hide, so don't use vpn.
Why would you need to use a VPN on a phone lol? If you're using free wireless tethering I really doubt that it'll mask it for you. Verizon would be like zomg in Russia wireless tethering steals you!

First of all, thank you both so much for the replies.
I'm not sure that I follow that last sentence, but but to answer the first question.... I want to use the vpn to encrypt my data. I don't use tethering that often, so I don't want to pay for the hotspot fee..... And I don't want to risk Verizon messing with or possibly closing my account or charging me a fee.... So I'd like to run my tethering data though my personal vpn.
I am able to use the stock VPN to connect to my networks. I have about 25 different VPN connections and my VPN connections are the L2TP/IPSEC PSK type. I can mount shares, as well as using remote control programs.
I would look at the logs of the device that you are trying to connect to, maybe that might give you some hints as to the issue. One thing I did find it that my device does not see the DNS server for some reason (even though it is specified), so therefore I have to use IP addresses to connect to anything.
This probably doesn't help you too much, but I did want to reply to let you know that I have the stock VPN working.
Good luck!

Wow! Thank you! It's so good to know that someone has a version of the stock vpn working. Mine are the PPTP type. I wonder if this phone has issues with that setup. Could you possibly test a PPTP connection?
Sorry, I'd love to be able to help you test but all of the device's that I connect to use only the L2TP/IPSEC PSK VPN. Good luck solving your problem and have a happy holiday!
Well I just wanted to update this thread. It looks like PPTP VPN is broken in stock android and therefore it's not specific to the rezound. It looks like it can be fixed by developers (and from what I've read) it's pretty common for it to be fixed in non-stock roms. The lack of internet/browsing is caused by a bug in the MPPE (Microsoft Point-to-Point Encryption) implementation. The following article explains it pretty well:
http://www.securitykiss.com/resources/articles/android_vpn_bug/index.php
This thread discusses some workarounds that were a bit over my head:
http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=4706
IPsec connections are not affected....and it looks like MPPE connections have been fixed in ICS. If any developers could take a look at the above thread and explain in more basic english how to "fix" the connections that would be greatly appreciated. If not, i guess i'll have to wait and hope ICS fixes it.

Very interesting! Thank you! Have you used the PPTP or L2TP version? Was this just to setup the vpn server and then you connect to it with the stock vpn client?

I'm having the same issues as you are. I know I'm replying a month late, but I didn't get my phone setup until almost Dec 30th and have been fighting my corp VPN ever since.
Once in a while I can get ping to work from Better Android Terminal, but that is always short lived and I can never get anything to work from other apps.
I'm glad you found the issue. I took a look at logcat and it is definitely a kernel issue. When the connection starts, I get the message "couldn't set tty to ppp discipline".

Email client not syncing over 3G, only works over wifi.

Hi,
I search over the forum but didn't find the answer to my question.
I'm the happy owner of a GS3 stock rom, not rooted, fresh out of the box.
It works verry well. I'm impressed by the device itself but I struggle with a problem.
My exchange account won't syncronize over 3G. Every few minutes, I get a message saying "unable to connect to [my account]"
gmail client works just fine but I have two email addresses (pro and home).
This is not a connectivity issue as other apps works great aover 3G and this is not a network limitation as I can connect thru other wifi networks.
I can do all necessary test and I had a look in all settings I can find without any succes until now.
I had 3 FW update since I own the device, each time I hope it will solve my probelm...
Thanks for your help.
Best regards from Belgium,
JC
Did you checked out if in Settings _Data Usage- not added to exceptions to sync only over WiFI ?

Thanks for your answer.
I checked and I can find any exceptions (I can't find the options, to be clear). Under the Data Usage, I have mobile data and Wifi pages but I don't find any way to manage exceptions.
There is a similar issue with the hotmail app - SSL auth error on 3G - Fine on Wi-Fi
The way to resolve that issue is to uninstall the app - remove any accounts associated to it (the hotmail sync account removed authomatically) reboot the phone - then set everything back up BUT DO SO ON 3G and not Wi-Fi!!! For some strange reason this sorts out the issue and can then connect on both 3G and Wi-Fi.
This is obviously specific to the hotmail app - but as this is also email it may also resolve your issue - Worth a shot at least. .Good Luck

Thanks for the info.
How can I uninstall the stock email app? I will try to clear my account but not uninstall the app and see if it solves my problem. I will try it tonight when I will be back in my country and not in roamuing anymore.
Thanks
I don't use the stock app at all - I guess you can remove the associated accounts under settings/accounts then go to app manager and clear cache and data.
My issue was due to a self signing certificate or something - guess that a hidden setting somewhere changes when you accept but wasn't working correctly when setting up accounts over Wi-Fi.
Hope it works for you. You not the option to get a specific mail provide app from the playstore? - Could be another option
I will let you know
I'm quite happy with the stock mail app for now. If I can solve my problem by reseting my account over 3G, I will keep it.

I resolved this issue by:
- deleting the Exchange Active Sync eMail Account I set up over WiFi (Email->Settings->Delete Account);
- created an EAS Account over 3G, selected "Accept every SSL Certificate" (Email->Settings->Add Account).
It seems that creating an EAS Account over WiFi prevents the same account to access the server over 3G/EDGE/... connection.
Tried on Sony Xperia Tablet Z SGP321, default mail app, with Android 4.2.2.

Problem solved!
Hi,
I have also an Galaxy S5 Android and sinds we have Exchange 2010, it does not synchronize any more. If I put my phone on SAVE MODE, it doesn't work. If I DISABLE the SAVE MODE it works.
Go to Setting => Power saving => put Power saving mode OFF
good luck.

Exchange and Android 6.0 not applying policies properly

Not sure if anyone else has run into this but here goes....
My work has an Exchange 2013 server and I activate my phone using ActiveSync on it. As you may know you can assign device policies in Exchange to require a password (or not) among a few other things. I have admin access to the exchange server and long ago had set my policy to not require a password. I still used one but in order to use certain things like Smart Lock the password requirement had to be disabled on the Exchange side. This all worked fine up until Android 6.0. Now no matter what the policy is my phone always requires me to have a PIN and disables Smart Lock. I'm guessing this may require an update on Microsoft's end? Anyone else experience this?
