I'm very familiar with android, but not the hero. I actually didn't even know the phone was an option for his network (alltell, purchased by verizon).
My father called me tonight excited he made the move to android. What would you guys suggest to make this phone optimized/fast/stable. Stable being the key since my father, while capable, will not be doing much with his phone.
Sorry for a one and done post, perhaps I can contribute here once I get my hands on the hero.
O, is sense nice on the hero or do you guys suggest lp or adw?
What else? O, he has an otterbox and sp on it, needed? I've always thought htc was top notch.
The store put anti virus apps and a task killer on his phone out of the box, i was not happy about that. I think 2.1 is okay without a tk, agreed for the hero?
I realize it is an open/lazy post, but I know nothing of the Hero and would much prefer yalls expertise.
I used sense on 2.1 and it was very stable, faster than on the 1.5 but still a bit laggy
I use LP now on FroydVillain and it's a breeze - very snappy. If I wanted a fast and stable phone without too much tinkering, I would just disable the sense UI from the stock 2.1 and replace it with LP.
Antivirus and taskkiller on stock 2.1? No way That is unneccessary and stupid at best.
I used sp on my hero the first month - but even though it was a top notch brand, I took it off and the screen suddenly felt so much better - it detects touch much better and the libophobe surface works very well. ...And the Hero's very (in)famous chin - well the reason for that chin IMHO is that you can throw the phone display first onto a concrete floor - and no scratches. I just use a cloth cover for it when it's in my pocket. One year - and not a single infinitesimal scratch yet
^ perfect, pretty much exactly my thoughts on everything. Thanks man.
Would you guys root him and put him on a ROM or leave it stock?
I disagree with the other guy abit,....
My recommendation for fluidity (is that a word?) and stability is to root and install Villain12, it is a 2.1 SenseUI ROM,... But is FLAWLESS!? The best ROM I ever used,... In fact, I might re-load it!
Is the hero supposed to get froyo?

Nope but it has because of some awesome devs
HTC is basically finished with the Hero, so if you want froyo or anything interesting like that, it's custom ROM time
Froyo doesn't have sense UI though, as of yet...

Right now I'm running the stock Sprint ROM. All I really want to change (man I'm getting boring in my old age!) is the TouchFlo version. I reallllly want the calendar tab on the main screen.
Do I have to flash my entire ROM to get that or can you just upgrade/install over the old TouchFlo? I search the forums here with a variety of key words but everything I found pointed back to ROMs of some sort.
Thanks for the help guys!

You can probably upgrade to a later version of TF3D, but truth be told... it would me much simpler to flash since there is a slew of things that need to be done to get the extra tabs and such. Besides, flashing to something like the NRG roms will boost your TP's performance... a lot!
Do you have any suggestions?
I actually just gave my Touch Pro to my wife... so while *I* have a huge tolerance after years and years of flashing ROMs and tweaking phones for the hiccups that come with such matters, I don't want to put her in a position of having to trouble shoot her phone without me or it crashing on her.
She's all about juicing up her phone with a new ROM but I don't want it to be horrible experience for her.
I was looking, earlier today, at NFSFAN's rom. It seems to be very well received although it looked like people were having trouble with the push-based syncing (which would be a deal breaker since her phone syncs to Google)

NFS is usually good... I would try that as well as NRG, Mighty, Vevitto, and probably Juicy. Hope that helps...

How to upgrade it? ive installed the Stock ROM on my TP(GSM) from site sunnysoft.com/htc/ and its kinda flawless and very very fast. I dont wanna change the ROM but i could use the calendar tab from sense 2.1 cos i find it very handy.. is there a way to add it to my tf3d ?
I tried to install sense 2.1 from cabs on this ROM but had the problem updating weather so i dropped it, besides that the ROM wasnt working so smoothly anymore.

Stuff for Sense/TF3D tend to write and drop a bunch of files under the Windows directory, which (under most cases) will slow down your device. So, getting it pre-cooked is always better as it is cleaner than the installation.
I was able to play with an X10 and I should say that the hardware is really nice and slick. It looks and feels great, and this is not unusual for SE.
The software, however, sucks big time. Not only it is Android 1.6 based, but it is quite sluggish (it just doesn't feel like a 1GHz Snapdragon device!) and has none of the HTC Sense widgets goodness, nor anything else (and don't even get me started with this strange "timescape" thing). Huge disappointment. Android 1.6 vanilla ROM would've probably been a better choice.
Therefore, the only reason I would consider this device is if I am able to flash a custom ROM on it. And since I REALLY like Sense, I'd love to see it on-board.
Has anyone heard if there are any upcoming X10 custom ROMs?
Thanks in advance!
Man dont wanna be rude but why don you read the other threads? Custom roms are only possible when rootin will be achieved. And atm its not possible. Hopefully in a month or so..but nothing for now. And its not sluggish at all.. Mine runs 20 apps and its v fast. Download some taskkiller if you havnt already.

.......................why dont you save yourself the trouble of putting a custom rom on it and just buy a htc?
I know installing roms is not rocket science. But it amazes me that done people can even do that.
Lol @ OP's
knowledge/reading fail.
@rayarny
Did you ever see it running next to a HTC legend? The legend is way smoother on the homescreen, like the fps count seems to be double that of the x10.

I happen to have both Legend and x10 (well.. actually the Legend is my wifes.)..
Legend smooth... maybe.. a tiny bit.. but it's also a much smaller screen so imperfections like that are more easily hidden.
Certainly NOT enough of a difference to affect the user experience.
This forum is getting out of hand. It is supposed to deal with Rom development.
Is there a moderator that can move the threads to general?

Well, HTC Desire is my second option
It's just that I really like the X10 hardware - it looks and feels very nice. And the screen is a bit bigger.
I recently sold my desire to get an X10, much nicer phone, all we need is Root, and its the best about

I just got a Thrill 4G and Im thinking about trading it in for an Atrix. The phone is great but the battery life sucks, and I cannot see the 3D screen with sun glasses on. I live in AZ so they are on every time I go outside so that is an important deciding factor for me.
The Atrix is $49 today so Im thinking about getting one. I'd love to hold out for the SGS2, but who knows when it will be out and it will prob be $199.
So, would you buy an Atrix again if you had to do it over again?
If I wouldn't of had to sell my first ATRIX I wouldn't have. My fave phone!
Tapped from my ATRIX.
No-brainer imo --- the atrix is FAR superior; I'll admit that with stock gingerbread the phone is kinda meh....still an awesome phone but nothing mindblowing. I assume since you're here you'll be unlocking and flashing it...which makes the phone AMAZING. The 3-D stuff just seems so gimmicky to me and won't be perfected/well-implemented for a good amount of time to come.
As far as the SGS2, on paper it looks like an amazing phone but I'll have to wait to see - I had the captivate and was so disappointed with it (anyone that had that phone from the beginning knows how horrendous Samsung's support was). I hope that Samsung has learned a lot since the beginning of the GS line because a phone with such amazing hardware shouldn't have so many problems.

I actually know exactly what you mean because I bought my Captivate a couple days after it was released. I still have it, dont use it, but I was really happy with it after flashing ROMS on it. The development forum on that phone is fantastic.
Yes, I would never have a stock phone. Did they ever get the bootloader unlocked on this phone? I know that was the major reason that people hesitated to get it.
i love my atrix. nothing out there is better to me. im running CM7 beta on it right now. so fast.
With CM7 , everything is happy
Love it, fast, nice camera, nice speaker, good gaming performance with THD games, great community.

I didn't miss it because I wasn't looking for it. I don't have an Atrix and was asking a question.
Everything I've read says that the Atrix also has poor battery life. I saw a thread on a battery calibration and mod that is supposed to help. I dont want to trade ina phone with bad battery life for another phone with bad battery life.
Both have a dual core CPU but the Atrix has 1GB of RAM which is nice IMO. I cant see the Thrill 3D screen with sunglasses on which sucks to me. The 3D is very gimmicky and hurts my eyes, lol. And there is only one ROM and the dev's seems to be bailing on this phone so I don't see a very good future in the Thrill dev threads.

Bad battery life reports are the vocal minority. Most of us here consider the battery to be one of the Atrix's strong points. I can get 2 1/2 days with light usage on mine with CM7 installed on it. Thats with wifi set to never sleep, and with GPS and 3G/HSPA enabled.
I love the Atrix. Literally the only problem I have with it is the pentile display, and even then its a very minor issue.
It has a 1930mAh and all the review sites i've read say the battery life is very good. Flashing a custom rom will make it even better! People have been getting like 16-24 hrs with Wifi and everything on, constantly browsing the internet and playing games (read it on youtube)
This is my first Android phone. Came from 4 years with the iPhone. Ill tell you this...not looking back. This phone was great stock. Now running cm7, this thing is fuggin amazing... battery and performance are nothing short of great.

The Atrix is an incredibly solid device. Gotta give AT&T credit for getting a top-notch device out of Motorola.
well it sounds like you guys are quite happy with it. If the battery life is that great then it's a no-brainer for $49.99. I do believe hat Im gonna return my thrill today. It a cool phone, but im a power user and ROM flashing addict so it seems i'll fit right in.

Good choice. The only HTC that is a solid Atrix competitor on AT&T (candybar Android w/o keyboard) is the Inspire4G, but honestly, after several HTC devices and several Moto devices, HTC may come up with cool designs and features, but Moto is great at implementing reliable, high-performing designs. I've never gotten the "oh, that is cheap" feeling with a Moto phone, while Samsung and HTC . . . meh!
Typically find out people who are complaining about battery life have heavy usage that would have even worse battery life on other phones. You had a captivate like I did, so I can tell you this phones battery kicks the **** out of the captivates....and will be even more amazing should you decide to UV it.
If you want to see a GOD AWFUL battery, **** around with an HTC inspire for about 6 hours lol.
Anyway, I think you should at least give the Atrix a try and worst case scenario you don't like it you bring it back within the 30 day window (assuming you will have one).

I guess I'm the lone dissenter here. I'm not a fan of the Atrix. Maybe I got a lemon but it seems like there are a lot of problems.
The build quality is suspect. Dust and even a very small piece of cat hair has gotten under the screen. The back plate/battery cover feels cheap and creaks when I hold it. The GPS is rarely able to get a lock on my position, rendering it useless. Also, bluetooth connection is unreliable. I've tried 2 vehicle systems and 3 headsets. They are all able to pair fine, but lose connection in the middle of phone calls.
And if you've done research on the Atrix I'm sure you've read all about Motoblur and how ugly it makes the UI. It's all true. I'm on gingerbread and I have to say its hideous. The stock in-call screen, dialer and photo gallery all look like something designed by an elementary student.
Can you flash it and fix the ugliness of the UI? I'm not a techy but from what I've read the answer seems to be mixed. It would appear yes you can just as long as the OTA update of gingerbread has not been installed on the phone. If it has, you're either screwed or prepare to spend the next 3 years of your life reading up on how to hack the device.
On the positive side, believe everything you've seen about the Atrix's speed. By far the fastest phone I've ever used. The screen is nice and bright as well.

There are many options to get rid of the stock gingerbread Motoblur look. The obvious choice is CM7, which will do away with Blur entirely, and make your phone quite a bit quicker. Most themes available in XDA will get rid of the Blur look, and there is a huge selection in the App and Theme section. I use the ext4 Homebase Rom with his Honeycomb theme, and it significantly speeds up my phone.
I would recommend the Atrix over other Android phones for a few reasons. The biggest reason why I like it so much is because of the form factor. I like the 4 inch screen more than 4.3 or 4.5 or 9.3. Battery life has been pretty good, at least as good as I can reasonably expect from a smartphone. The hardware specs are comparable to any other Android device, and if you're willing to root and flash custom Roms, you will notice a marked improvement over stock performance (which I think is true of any Android phone). What really makes this phone as slick as it is are its accessories. I just bought the lapdock from Vancouver Craigslist for $150 and I love it. I knew when I bought it that it was kind of gimmicky (like the 3D from your Thrill), but for what I need this tool for, it's been outstanding. Nothing beats watching Game of Thrones and Breaking Bad on my hour commute to work while simultaneously charging my phone!
I love my Atrix, and it's a shame the phone got such a bad wrap off the bat due poor implementation of Blur on 2.2, and encrypted bootloader. Now with the unlocked bootloader and better blur, in addition to more and more custom roms being built, this phone is coming closer to its potential. I wish it had a metal back plate, but I understand the potential of worse reception and getting hotter than the plastic cover. All in all, the only phone I would remotely consider exchanging my Atrix for would be the Sensation, and even then I think I'd really have to be sold on the idea. I hope this helps with your decision.
Cm7 is a must on the atrix. I've tried other roms but none ever worked quite right. Annoying fc & other errors - but thanks to those devs for putting in the time & effort. Blur is complete crap: I couldn't even listen to my mp3s without the music stuttering bcuz the phone was busy searching for "suggestions" of similar songs I may like. Damn you, for the unwanted marketing on my device, at&t & Motorola. For a while, I very much regretted trading in my iPhone. But now all is well. Thank you cm7 devs!
So I just got my Atrix
It has 1.2.6 as a build on it, and from reading I'm not finding too much information on that build. I don't think that I want to do the OTA to 4.1.57 though because I keep reading about bricks. I'm going to put a ROM on it, more than likely CM7 so Im not sure what good it would do to update OTA. I'll have to root it though so I guess I can get on that first but all of the root guides are for 1.8.x and up.
Okay, so my G1 seems to be dying and it's pretty slow anyway, so I want to get a new phone.
Problem is, looking at new phones out now, they're mostly either designed for people new to smartphones (Wildfire S etc.) or they're super fast but super expensive (Sensation etc.)
So I've been looking at buying a used phone from 1-2 years ago, although I have certain requirements:
Needs to have at least a 1GHz CPU
At least 512MB of RAM
3.7"+ screen with a higher resolution than my G1
Capable of running Gingerbread well
Looking at spending maximum of £150-£160
Looking about, I thought about getting a Desire or a Nexus One, but then I noticed the HD2. I like the fact that it has a huge 4.3" screen and is capable of running WP7 as well, and it's around the same price as the other two.
So are there any reasons not to go with one now?

mine has been bullet proof and I scew with it all the the time. For a few months I have been running SD versions just switched to a nand version.
Tried most of the nands found all of them had issues
I found this one
[27.Sep.2011][MAG/cLK] NexusHD2-Gingerbread V3.1a (GRK39F)(Android 2.3.6)[tytung_r12]
If You want a good nand to start with give this one a try.
had it on mine for about a week so far runs freakin fantastic an OEM rom couldn't run better. They do say the USB connection for files and stuff is flakey but I remove my card and pop in to the slot for that, so no problems for me.
There are no HTC apps but I like the ones in this build. Although I do miss the weather clock I'm sure I can find some sort of replacment.
grab it and start having a blast there is alot of great work here and I'm sure one of the roms will fit your needs.
don't forget to donate when you find something useful they deserve it for the work, after all they give us what HTC won't.

Thanks Alex, I'll be sure to check that out when I get one.
At the moment I'm thinking of moving to a contract at the same time, so I'll probably sell the phone they give me and purchase a used HD2 instead.
The HD2 was one if the best phones I ever had. Was a sad day when it died lol. If it hadn't broke I would still be using it.
i think the hd2 has the biggest community here on xda (take a look at the number of posts and threads they have here) that pretty much means more development for it (as you can already; it can run windows mobile 6.5, windows phone 7, android, ubuntu, and meego). i dont think you will ever get tired of the hd2
Yes, DEFINITELY get an hd2. I have never had so much fun with a phone. I don't think there is any phone on the market at the moment which is more versatile. Depends whet you want - if you want versatility & the ability to flash all sorts of different roms, then hd2 is the way to go.

Cheers guys, I'll definitely be getting one then.
Hello, please let me explain:
I have been passively following the progress of Atrix development here and I've been interested in unlocking but I never really had time to get into it.
My last phone was an HTC Magic and I had that unlocked (it was easy as hell) and I LOVED CyanogenMod.
Recently I've noticed it's getting easier (or just more clear) to unlock the Atrix (I have a Bell one so for a long time it seemed extra risky), but the thing is, I'm more or less happy with my phone right now. I do have it rooted, and I don't often have too many issues with it (I don't even mind BLUR), although sometimes it does get pretty damn slow, also the battery life is abysmal (like 12 hours ish with no music or video and minimal texting).
So I'm wondering, and I didn't find much on here addressing this: is it really worth unlocking?
I haven't been too involved here recently, so do these ROMs really improve the performance that much over stock 2.3.4? And more importantly, do they improve battery life? CM7 doesn't really seem worth it at this point.
Any insight? (Also I apologize if there is a similar post here, or if this post infuriates you in some way.)
Thank you!
EDIT: Okay I looked at CM7 and they've actually made a lot of impressive progress! I take back my earlier comment (and apparently I can't work strike-through tags)
Yes, to improved performance
Yes, to improved battery life
and to the CM7 comment, there are other options available.
Is it worth it to unlock it? Only you can answer that....but if you want a custom rom, then it's a must. If you choose to stay stock, no need to unlock.
No matter how tolerable Blur is on the Atrix, it doesnt compare to CM7. Like, I was in the same position you are, where I was like "Mehhhh I dont really want to risk breaking my phone for Cyanogen, and Blur isnt nearly as horrible as on the motorola bravo." But then I went ahead and did it anyway, cause it was a refurb unit and the warranty wouldnt last anyway. Oh my god, its SO MUCH BETTER. Holy god, seriously, you thought it was fast now, You need to try CM7 on the Atrix, and if not CM7, then definitely Homebase. You wont regret it, and I have a feeling we're getting Ice Cream Sandwich within the next couple of months, which youll need to flash.
Anyway, thats my input, totally do it. The only draw backs are no Webtop and no Fingerprint scanner, but thats just if you use MIUI or CM7.
There is also MIUI which just had an alpha release. Should be in beta soon, and release sometime soon after that. So far the alpha is pretty decent, and MIUI itself is awesome.
Wow that really clears things up
Thanks guys, I guess I'll give it a go
I saw that MIUI port. I'll definitely wait that one out, I've never used MIUI but it looks super nice.
And I don't even own a webtop or use the fingerprint sensor so hurray for that
Also ICS would be SOOO great. I was considering selling my Atrix to get a Galaxy Nexus but I don't have that kinda dosh... also I just read this today... yikes.
