After trying the lag fix I could not longer open any applications they just kept force closing. I tried restarting but now the phone wont even turn back on. it stays on galaxy s screen then just goes black. I ade a back up in clock work prior to doing this but I cant access it as i was accessing it through rom manager. How can i flash the back up to recover my phone =(
IF you made the backup using NANDROID in Clockwork recovery:
boot into recovery by holding volume up+volume down+power, as soon as you see the "white vibrant", let go of power but keep holding volume up+volume down. you will be brought to recovery, it should be black background with blue text, then use your volume buttons, to go to reinstall packages, use the power button to select it, that will put you into clockwork recovery. use the volume buttons to go to Nandroid->Restore then choose your backup, Good luck.
If all else fails you may need to use ODIN to get the factory image back on, information on how to do that is in the stickies. Search for it, you will find it.
You can open the backup by holding both volume keys as you power on the phone I believe....either that or it will go into download mode and you can then use odin to flash. Hope it helps.
Edit: nevermind, look at the pay above mine lol

Recovery
Thanks for the quick replys greatly appreciated. I click reinstall packages but ti doesnt go into recovery. I'm thinking because I called the lag fix update.zip it is reinstalling that instead of the recovery..I think im still new to all this. I looked at the odin sticky. is there a way I can use that program and use the backup that is on my phone or is it lost and must I use the one that is provided in the sticky?
You can install Stock Rom Via ODIN. I found the link from this forum. I was in the same situation yesterday but I ended up flashing to Vibrant5.zip instead. After that, my files were still on the phone. If you made a backup with ROM manager, your backup files should be in /sdcard/clockworkmod/backup. Reinstall ROM manager and see if you can restore back to that.
I cant get into get to rom manager because my phone just boots to a black screen. is there away i can access my internal sd without having the phone booted?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=734475 follow the instructions...worked for me last night when I 'bricked' my phone by removing twlauncher with root manager
Solution
**********SOLUTION***********
Thanks for the reply's from those that did. i ended up using odin3 which took me forever to figure out lol. The brunt of my problems was getting into download mode. after searching the internet for which seemed like for ever and 100 unsuccessful attempts to get into download mode I came across on post that really helped.
I had to turnoff the phone, plug it in and wait until i seen the green battery indicator. Once i saw it i held down both volume up and down keys then pressed power. The key was as soon as the battery indicator disappeared you have to let go of power.
that worked on the first try for me from there it was smooth sailing. Odin is very simple but its the little things that are very tricky and because i didnt know what the protocol was I didnt know whether I was even in download mode or not, so these are some things to know
*you will no when you are in download mode because a picture of a yellow triangle will appear on the screen with an android in the middle with a shovel digging.
*No the recovery menu is not download mode
*Just because Odin detects the phone(Displays COM port in yellow) Does not mean you are in download mode....Which was my misconception.
*The "analyzing file" message should only appear briefly a minute or two max. Anything longer is not normal and Odin needs to be reset as well as the whole process.
*It doesn't take to long to flash and it WORKS I am back on stock and happy as hell =)
Thanks again to those that helped and good luck to any future brickers.
i just saw this post but what i did was to save the clockwork update.zip into my computer and downloaded this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=739300. unzipped it and deleted the root.zip from the directory and renamed update.zip to root.zip and hit rootme.bat
the program will push root.zip (clockwork recovery) into phone and reboot into recovery while stuck in any screen =)
I had this exact same set of issues. Ultimately what caused the problem is the fact Busybox wasn't installed. I ran the update.zip version that supposedly had busybox, ran the script and then all of my programs crashed. The phone would never reboot after that. Ultimately saved it with Odin and was able to restore my nandroid backup after getting ROM Manager going again. Very scary hour there!

Super Hard Bricked my SGH T959 Vibrant
Please PLEASEEEEEE HELP ME ... PLEASE
I was flashing jelly bean 4.1 (my previous version was ICS 4.0 by ExROM by LightX). When I rebooted my phone it was showing the Vibrant screen >> "VIBRANT SAMSUNG". then my phone was not starting. it was stocked in the screen. i did CWM recovery but it was also not working. I have tried many ways by ODIN or Heimdell Soft Unbrick. but now i get into only downloading mode. no vibrant screen isn't appearing. only one time ODIN can recognize my phone then i haven't the t959 tar file. so i didn't flash that time. after that i gave soft unbrick by Heimdell's software then my download mode went off and not restarting. by the way when i downloaded the TAR file and connect to ODIN then ODIN couldn't recognize my phone. my PC can recognize my phone but ODIN can't. whenever i give soft unbrick the download screen goes off. i have tried two computers and two cables. same problem appearing. i have also tried all odin versions but these are not working. only one time ODIN can recognize my phone. further before, when i gave volume up + volume down + power button then RST_STAT = 0*0 ..... appearing and an android said "UNKNOWN UPLOAD MODE" but now there is no android but the red little letters still appearing on my screen. PLEASE BOSS HELP ME... PLEASE .
Hi,
I just updated my Vibrant to the newest version. Since then, it does boot the right way - there is just the loading symbol (not the vibrant screen), which disappears after a few seconds. BUT: When I plug in the USB, I can normally boot. As I started, the USB drivers of the phone seem to be damaged: It says to be connected, when I'm not, and is not able to connect normally when I plug in the USB cable. My Laptop sometimes identifies the device (I was successful in Mounting the phone drive once), but Kies does not work (I installed both Kies, and after Kies not working the driver package from XDA-dev).
I bought the phone over eBay, so I do not exactly know whether it is rooted. But I did not seem to be rooted, since there were no special applications and the user before even did not reset the phone (I thinks someone who roots would do that).
Now concerning the recovery:
I only got once into the Download&Recovery mode, but did not do anything there. After being stuck there, I pulled the battery to get out of that mode. Since then I cannot get there anymore, when I press the button combination the phone then starts the mode where I can reinstall packages etc.
Thus a flash via Odin seems to be not available (unless I try adb), so I thought the easiest way would be flashing a Nandroid image. Would that work without accessing the Download mode? I could reinstall packages and probably could root, but would not rely on getting the USB connection to work. Furthermore, I could put that image and the update.zip for an image loader on the sd-card. Is that enough to flash a Nandroid image?
Thanks a lot for your help,
Martin
What nandroid image exactly are you trying to flash? Did you make a backup prior to updating? For root, check to see if there is a "superuser" app in your applications drawer. Also, can you refine the questions you are asking exactly? It seems like you have multiple issues.
Thanks!
Thanks for your reply!
Sorry that I wrote the post a little bit to complicated
I would like to flash this image (unrooted): ht*p://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=7329357&postcount=2
I would use Clockwork Recovery. And then try the update again.
And I didn't do an backup before I just got the phone and didn't know that an official update could also brick it.
And my question is: Could I flash the image in the following scenario?
- I cannot boot normally (without power supply)
- I'm already on JI6 (the actual version) and can boot the phone having it connected to USB (because it "preboots" to the loading screen, and from there I am able to boot)
- the USB does not seem to work in the right way (thus cannot rely on using adb to enter the download mode)
- I cannot enter the download mode (just the one to reinstall packages)
Or is the chance to high that I completely brick it?
Thanks for helping me!
If you can enter stock recovery, then you should be able to enter download mode.
-Try holding the volume keys and then plugging in the usb cord.
-Try plugging in the phone, wait for the battery icon to show charging, then hold the volume keys and push the power button, let go of the POWER BUTTON IMMEDIATELY AFTER THE SCREEN TURNS BLACK. MAKE SURE YOUR STILL HOLDING VOLUME KEYS
-Try those steps a few times...
So, your telling us that you cannot boot up the phone without usb power? What happens if you try removing the usb while it's booting up?
Did you have adb setup correctly before with all the right drivers?
...To answer your original question: try getting into download mode before you attempting any nandroid. If you successfully get into download mode, whether it be through adb or physically, Odin can be your backup if a nandroid fails. Try a nandroid after following these steps only. Make sure you can get into download mode!
* I'm not responsible for bricking you device. Just doubly make sure you can get into download mode just in case of a soft-brick.
Ok, I flashed back to stock using Odin, but Settings->About phone still says Firmware version 2.1-update1 and the bugs still exist. Is it possible to get completely back to the state before the update?
Thanks so far!
The OTA caused a lot of problems for me too, I was rooted only. My bone stock Vibrant also got the ota, and it went smooth.
I had backed mine up completely, and flashed it back.
However both ended up vary laggy afterwards.
I just ended up flashing a custom rom. Fusion 1.1 on both. Very Happy now.
Does flashing a custom ROM also change the "firmware version" of the phone? Maybe I could get back to 2.1 from my actual 2.1-update1 that way.

Hi, I recently bought a used Vibrant from someone... Worked great.
So I decide to update it and hope maybe get the GPS fixed, but Kies wouldnt work, I tried on 5 different computers with different windows, no luck, crashed on windows 7, and said the OS on the phone is a modified version and so it cant update on Windows XP,
So I decide to try Odin... but Odin only detects the phone in USB Debugging mode, and thats wasnt very helpful... For some reason, whenever I try to put the phone in Download mode, Windows XP AND 7 say that an unrecognized device has been attached... I tried USB drivers, 10 different times on each comp, different combos, different techniques from all over the forum and the internet... Odin wouldnt show the device in Download mode.
So I install clockwork and download the rom to restore the device to its factory state, I have it reboot into clockwork recovery and restore it using the files I downloaded to the phone... Now the phone doesnt boot, it stays stuck on the "Samsung" logo, I hear the T-Mobile jingle, but thats just it, the Samsung logo stays on and nothing happens.
I cant access the phone from the computer at all now, since it could never detect the phone in Download mode anyways, and when I put the phone in recovery mode, it shows two hard drives that I cant open... I have a micro sd card that I tried to load another restore onto and try to use that in recovery, but the recovery mode wont let me browse the sd card....
I hit a brick wall now... I don't think I have a use for yet another paperweight.
Ive all but given up, so if you could please help me, I would reaaaally appreciate it.
Edit: I tried using Ubuntu, but same thing, nothing happens in Download mode, and it only shows two drives that I cant access in recovery mode.
What ROM did you flash?
Yes, I installed the drivers over 10 times over on 10 different comps using 10 different versions of the drivers.
Kies, Kies Mini, drivers I found on these forums, drivers I found in other forums... nothing
Rom... Ummmm I used this file wwwmediafirecom/?kqaulorzx5f6dyq
UPDATE: I formatted the sdcard now, cleared cache and personal data using the recovery console... Now im even more screwed up because I cant access the other options
"E:Cant open /sdcard/update.zim (so such file or directory) installation aborted"
Ok, I put the phone in recovery mode and opened Odin, it was detected... I know its supposed to be download mode, but Im really desperate and am going to try anything since it only detects my phone in recovery mode... I pressed start in Odin and it hasn't moved in 30 minutes

Odin will not work in Recovery mode, you have to be in Download mode, use the key combinations for download mode, mine is turn off the phone, unplug the USB and hold down the volume key and turn the phone on, while holding the volume down, and make sure you have the pit file, do a reasearch and you will find the pit file for vibrant. You have to have the pit file attached when you use Odin. But make sure you are in download mode not in recovery.
Get phone into download mode. The easiest way to do this is pull out battery from phone. Then plug phone into usb connected to computer it will have the battery sign. Hold volume keys and power button when the screen goes black let go of power button. You will be in download mode if Odin doesn't detect it unplug usb and replug it.
Also clockwork can not read your sdcard, it only reads your interal storage.
I tried that for Odin again, and it didnt work, I also tried a hundred different methods and steps, but they all have the same problem.
Im on Windows 7 64 bit, and I get a message after about 5 seconds of plugging my download-mode phone into the computer that says "USB Device not recognized - One of the USB devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned, and windows does not recognize it, for assistance in solving this problem, click this message"
In device manager, I see one of the devices is called "unknown device" when I plug in the phone in download mode... I tried to manually install drivers from a list, but none seem to work so far...
What if I manage to somehow put a file in the internal memory, would I be able to use the recovery console to bring the phone back to life?
EDIT: Sorry for double post

Correct. You can get into cwm recovery still correct? only if yes to first.....And when you are in cwm with phone plugged into pc if you type adb devices what comes up?
Wait... I must be confusing recovery mode with CWM... Sorry Im still new to android... How can I bring up CWM if the phone doesnt boot? Last time I brought up CWM I had to use the ROM manager when the phone was working........
OH CRAP! Now I get it, when you try to reboot into CWM, it reboots into recovery the first time, and then youll have to reboot again to get into CWM... Oh... So that means.... I tried to restore the file I downloaded using the recovery console, and thats why it crashed my phone....
Well.... Im gonna try to connect the phone to yet another computer in download mode, I doubt it will work, but I will try.
Meanwhile if you guys have any suggestions.... And sorry for my stupidity...
Oh, and as for ADB, I tried to install that on my computer, but when I go to CMD, it keeps giving me an error saying the device is offline... So Im guessing I have to turn it on somehow using the phone...?

Thegreat has helped me narrow things down... Im using a blackberry mini USB data cable, and so that COULD be the problem.
If anyone reading this has a mini USB cable that was not specifically made for the vibrant, could you please try to connect your vibrant to your computer in download mode using the cable that wasnt made for the vibrant?
Does the computer detect it?
I would really appreciate any feedback, because I dont currently have the original cable, and it would take a long time to get one shipped from samsung, not to mention the hefty pricetag because its OEM.
Help would be appreciated
I have used a blackberry specific cable when booting into dl mode and flashing odin, and it works for me.
Try this method if you haven't already, or keep trying it, sometimes doesn't work the first time.
1. Open odin on your pc an have the pit and tar fies loaded.
2. Remove battery, sd, and sim cards.
3. Plug in usb cable from pc to phone.
4. Holding both volume up and volume down, pop the battery in.
That should boot you right into dl mode. If you get the green battery image, pull battery and try it again. I have found if you hold the phone face down in your left hand when holding the volue buttons, makes it a little easier to keep the buttons depressed whie popping the battery in. Hope this helps, good luck.

Was there any resolution to this problem? I've been having the same problem for a while now. Worked around it using Wifi apps to log into my phone, as well as just using the external SD card for most media files.
Odin doesn't even recognize my phone and I've tried just about everything. I just get a USB Device not Recognized message when I plug it in and even then I don't always get that.
Thanks. I'd love to be able to odin the phone back to stock and see if the ROMs I've been using perform better after that.
Hi all,
Once again, I've hit a wall with my phone. I apologize ahead of time for the length of this post, but i want to be very clear about what happened so I can get it resolved as soon as possible. Also, I have searched for hours to find an answer to this problem, but I've failed to find anything that helps.
Earlier this week I was running Bionix Fusion 1.1 but with all the buzz on the forums about the new 2.2 ROMs I decided to try one. I downloaded Axura 2.0.5 and backed up everything with Titanium Backup and ROM Manager. I then went through ROM Manager to perform the install. This is were I fear I messed something up. I renamed the .zip file from StockKernelAXURA.zip to update.zip (just like when I installed Bionix). Booted into Clockwork (through ROM Manager) and flashed the zip. Everything looked fine during the install, but I'm stuck at the Vibrant load screen.
I found one solution that uses Odin to reflash back to factory, which I did and everything was great... but then I re-flashed and tried Axura 2.0.5 again using the same method. Now I can't boot up (still stuck on the Vibrant load screen) and I can't enter Download mode. I've tried all kinds of button and usb plug-in sequences. Nothing! Please, I know someone out there is thinking "Noob... this is a simple fix!" I'm hoping that person reads this and can lend a helping hand.
Thanks in advance!
This always works for me take out battery plug in usb to phone and computer hold down volume keys while holding the volume keys place the battery back in this should take you to download mode if it doesn't your phone may be hardware locked there are methods of making a device to force download mode but try what I said first then if that doesn't work at least you have an idea of what else to look for
Still flashing , thanks to odin & tw
It worked! Thank you, thank you, thank you! I knew there had to be a way I was missing! I'm flashing back to stock (again) and I'm going to try flashing Axura again... but seeing as the method I used has failed twice so far, any advise? I love how Team Whiskey provided detailed instructions for flashing Bionix Fusion... so shouldn't the same process work for different ROMs? Regardless, now I have another trick up my sleeve.
Thanks again!
Flash it through clockwork in rom manager choose install from sd then go to where it is in your phone click on it that should send you to clockwork recovery then go to install.zip from sd then navigate to whatever folder its in then go to it, it should install you dont have to change the name
Still flashing , thanks to odin & tw

I'm assuming you're stuck at cache Just take out your SD card, the large one. I always odin with my sd card out. It gets past that phase where you can get stuck. That will work, and DO NOT rename the {insert rom name here}.zip file to update.zip, just enter clockwork mod recovery and choose install zip from sd card and find it, BUT you NEED to
1. Wipe cache partition
and
2. Wipe DALVIK cache (in advanced menu)
BEFORE installing a rom.

So rather than start new thread I thought id continue on this one saying that I have the same problem only no matter what I do I can not force any mode at all. My phone is currently stuck stating that it is converting data partition to optimize for ext 4.
I really dont know what to do at this point.
I tried the following steps
1. Download all the files required in the "BOOT CYCLE" section of this post.
2. Remove everything from your phone (SD card, sim, battery).
3. Plug your phone into your computer WITHOUT the battery, as you have already taken it out in the last step.
4. Press and HOLD vol. up and vol. down.
5. As you are HOLDING these buttons, reattach your battery.
6. You should be in Download Mode.
7. Unplug phone from USB
8. Follow steps 4-8 from the "BOOT CYCLE" section.
with no results. It doesnt even give my phone enough time to show the charging indicator it just automaticlaly boots.
OK i got it to go into download mode. i just plugged in the cord and held down the volume rocker.
no recovery mode
I have the same problem I can't get into Recovery mode I have an HTC G2, I was installing a new kernel, then the recovery Mode stop working, Got stuck in HTC Logo.
Any idea how to fix the problem or what's my problem??? i'd already try some tips but nothing works....
try using the vibrant toolbox to flash the new rom

You most likely made that backup when voodoo was disabled and now when you restored it, voodoo was enabled. Try booting up in recovery[VOL UP + VOL DOWN + POWER then let go of POWER and keep holding VOL UP + VOL DOWN] and installing a voodoo kernel like overstock.
That may be what happened, but dont know anything about the history of the phone. I have tried over and over to get into recovery mode and it wont go past the Vibrant load screen :/
I am also stuck at the vibrant boot screen.
I was trying to update a rom via CWM on my phone, the phone restarted and is now stuck at the vibrant screen.
I have had trouble connecting my vibrant to the computer before. I am not sure that even if i get my phone into dl mode i might not be able to connect to ODIN.
Please help!!
First Hello All,
I don't post much I mostly lurk and read. I have seemed to totally Brick my phone. . In DL mode Odin doesn't recognize my phone this is after multiple times of reinstalling the drivers via Kies. I seem to no longer be able to get into recovery mode either. Not sure what the heck I did but it seems bad. Any help would be much appreciated.
In general, stay away from Kies.
Look in the Noob guide there are a number of ways to get in download mode or recovery mode.
I am assuming you have the phone rooted and either are trying to load or reload custom software.
here are couple of the ways:
Dl mode = vol up + home + power
Recovery = vol down + home + power.
Pull battery plug usb (already plugged into the computer), hold button combo and insert battery
There are variants of these (like do the above a tap home quickly while holding down buttons) they are in the Noob guide as well.
Good luck, this should be easy to fix
Thx. I will give the above a try. I'v been trying everything under the sun. If I can get into recovery I think I will be good.
Thx again.

Is your phone actually entering download mode? If so it's saveable and you are experiencing a driver related issue. Re-install the drivers then search for ODIN 1.82 and YouTube the ODIN video I have made to help you use it. If it's not powering on, I can still fix it as well with JTAG!
I can get into DL mode. I have reinstalled the drivers multiple times with the same result. Windows just won't pick up the phone. I used to be able to get into Recovery easy now seems I can't at all.
Try another machine. The only thing it can be if you are still unable to get it picked up on another machine is a form of brick that effects the USB port (I've never seen that) or your port is dead itself or atleast the data transfer pins (1 or both) are jacked up.
After finally getting back into DL Mode I get the same USB Malfunction error on 3 different PC's. This is weird at this point I have uninstalled and reinstalled all types of drivers from ( Vibrant to SGS II ) still nothing.
