After going through this myself and having to have a friend help me find my way through the endless post and threads of various bricks and fixes I thought I would centralize or pin-point this exact brick.
Hopefully this will help others and keep the clutter down in the General and Q&A threads.
What you will need:
ODIN (To Flash)
SDK (up and running for ADB)
Samsung Kies (For the drivers)
*Follow the directions for each thread to the T*
eugene's "FROYO that doesn't brick" (Flash this via ODIN first)
JAC's "Stock ROM" (Flash this via ODIN second)
All these resources can be found in the ROM bible:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=771111
So Please take the time go through getting yourself out of this brick if you took the time to get yourself into it . Besides the its better to know then to make someone else pay for it. Knowledge is power
I tried all this last week (using this method) and still had the dead screen after start-up. Tried 6 times and finally just went back to t-mobile for a warrantee replacement. I'm not sure I did anything wrong (well-versed in ODIN, adb, etc.).
Just a lil input--still have no idea why Bionix 1.3/voodoo died on my phone and caused this, or why the above method didn't work.
????
+1 im stuck to... rom... same attempts... same issue
Update: 9/27/10
had the same issue but fixed it... used odin with the stock but it didn't work... tryin every restore in the book... except the Froyo version... low and behold Eugenes Froyo did the trick... it allowed me to install it and then go back to the rom of my choice... in recovery I repeatly got the error with trying to wipe data... after boot the phone would get stuck on a blank screen with the soft key lit... but (ROM) Froyo ~~~That does not Brick! Downgrading Is Fine --eugene373 did the trick... I'm not a noob but I almost called tmo, to do an exchange... Bionix 1.3 is the only rom I have ever had this problem with... It happened when I attempted to change roms via clockwork...
Are you getting confirmation from ODIN, with a PASS? When you flash the euro GS ROM are you letting it fully boot before moving on to the stock ROM?

I stopped the step of adding Eugene's rom and then Flashed vibrant9...
everytime i flash my phone with ODIN, i get the black screen of death, AND it gives me the message: "E: Can't mount /dev/block/mmcblk0p1 (invalid argument) E:copy_dbdata_media:Can't mount SDCARD:"
Am i screwed?
I tried flashing with eugine's froyo rom, but it still doesnt work
Are you booting up every rom? Does odin give you a pass? Are you in download mode? When does it give you that message?

yes, yes, yes, and it says "E: Can't mount /dev/block/mmcblk0p1 (invalid argument) E:copy_dbdata_media:Can't mount SDCARD:" when it goes into recovery mode
after odin does its business, the black screen of death comes up after the galaxy s thing; so in response i go to the recovery menu, i try to clear the data, and that's when it gives that message: "E: Can't mount /dev/block/mmcblk0p1 (invalid argument) E:copy_dbdata_media:Can't mount SDCARD:"

Look for a ODIN repartition thread. I haven't gone through this myself but I'm pretty sure that's what's needed.
AMAZING
I greatly appreciate this post ive been dealing with this black screen for the day trying everything and this worked. even though tmobile is sending me a new phone next week i am so happy to have this phone back and working. Thank you once again.
help please please
I updated with Kies, the whole update process was started but then at the end said that I would need to restore it with a code, then it came up a box saying that it would remove the power cord, battery, stop the battery to restart Mobile halt the cord. Work started on my cell phone but now I have an orange box on the box with a mobile and a PC on either side?
I have followed ROOT Guide until step 16:
Once you have flashed into an unofficial kernel that this root kernel so it will appear a yellow triangle for a while when you start your SGS2. To avoid this you can after you complete this whole process of root-flash back to an official kernel.
After that nothing else happends, wath shuld happend?
The kernel I have flashed in after the Kernel_I9100XWKI4.tar also tried CF Root SGS2_XW_NEE_KI4-v4.1-CWM4.tar and it goes to flash it but when I shall be late in the FW GT I9100_NEE_I9100XWKI4_I9100OXXKI2_I9100XXKI1.tar so you can not flash in?
Is it some way to flash it so it works again, is there a way to get original back?
I've had an LG OPTIMUS X2 before and found it reached called "[Guide] Recovering Thread | NVFlash | EXT3 18/5-11" could not be easier to restore your phone to its original", is there a way to do it on a Samsung as well?
Is there anyone who can link to a Swedish android 2.3.3 kernel and FW?
Is it possible to fix or must it be submitted?

PLEASE HELP!! So I had loaded several ROMs (Axura's, Ginger clone, Nero v1/Beta). All seemed well till this afternoon. My phone had powered down by itself. I turned it back on and it was frozen at the boot screen. Thinking all I had to do is flash back to stock with Odin. Well being in the rush I was in I accidentally didn't uncheck the re-partition check box. I reflashed and now the phone is going into the recovery mode with an error in red.
This is the exact error I get in red:
E:Can't mount /devblock/stl10
(invalid argument)
E:copy_dbdata_media:Can't mount DBDATA:
copy default media content failed.
Anyone have any suggestions? Please, please, please HELP!!
The last ROM I ran was Nero v1. I tried to nandorid recover to no success.
I had the same problem earlier, instead of using the JI6 tar file use the JFD stock tar file, it solved my problem easy enough. Just use the same 512.pit file and odin v1.7 and you should be in the clear. i cant post the tar file but here is a link to where you can download it : www.justanotherdev.slackdev.com/T959UVJFD.tar and www.justanotherdev.slackdev.com/s1_odin_20100512.rar
Hope this helps.
Wow! I've been trying to find that exact JFD.tar. I also figured that may be the thing I needed to get this up and running. Thanks for the help. I'll update if it works or not.
Rock'n the G1 till I either get this solved or get another Vibrant.
ya same thing has happend to me, seems like you figured out the solutino. You need a tar file with the dbdata in it. JFD has it, but some others don't.
YES!!! Loading the stock JFD.tar worked. Talk about some stressful hours. I've been at this for 6 hours trying to get this figured out. Thanks for the help!!
I can put the G1 back in it's resting place. It was kind of wierd and neat at the some time having my G1 back in the swing of things.
Thanks again!!
I tried flashing CM7 and had an issue where it would not properly flash the initial rom, the kernel flashed fine. Every time I boot the phone now I get put back into the recovery mode and the phone will not boot. Having tried a few roms all to no success I went back to using ODIN to flash back. I flashed the PIT and PDA for KB5 which worked but when the phone boots now I get the following error message:
"E:Can't mount /dev/block/stl10
(Invalid argument)
E:copy_dbdata_media:Can't mount DBDATA:
copy default media content failed."
I've also tried JI6 and KB1 which all gave the same result. Flashing update.zip (which was the CM7 kernel) put me back into CWM but then I was right back to square one. If anyone has a way to fix this please let me know. If I need to flash something please link to the proper files, It seems a lot of the ODIN flashes have been removed or are outdated. I've done a decent amount of research prior to posting here, a lot of results point back to the I9000 but obviously my issue is on the Vibrant.
EDIT:
I was able to flash I9000XXJPC via Odin and it booted however this is obviously not the intended rom for the Vibrant as all the keys are messed up. I tried flashing back to KB5 using Odin but ended up at the same error as above. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
EDIT2:
Please ignore this thread I was able to resolve the issue by flashing a JFD build I found. Then applied root -> KB5 -> CM7. All is good.

Ji6 isn't a full rom, the *ONLY* released Odin rom that's a full rom is jfd. Jk2 is a weird one, and if.you happen to messup with that one you might end up with a perma brick as it flashes a primary and secondary bootloader.

hey guys im not new to flashing or anything but im new to the SGS2.
so im in canada. i bought an unbranded unlocked SGS2 off of a dude.
So i went to flash CWM, it did, with success. it rebooted and it just stays at at the boot screen with the yellow sign. wth? i tried loading the ATT one and that gets me a lil further. it gives me the animated samsung logo and then gets stuck there. \
i tried to mount my usb drive via CWM and that failed as well. Then I decided to try and fix things and i downloaded a BELL stick firmware (im in canada) + kernel and it goes straight to the stock recovery with logs in the bottom in yellow telling me all sorts of failed things.
what the hell guys? did i miss something critically important? i never had this much trouble with my captivate or with my desire.

The yellow sign just means you're not on a stock kernel; it doesn't mean anything's wrong with the phone. You can buy a USB jig for a few bucks off Amazon to get rid of it or just put a stock kernel.
yes i realize that brother, but it doesnt go anywhere. it doesnt do anything. and i did flash stock firmware and kernel and nothing happens. it just stays there. and i cant even mount my usb storage via cwm.

Lack of proper research would lead to these types of things
1.Did you make note of exactly what model of SGS2 you have?
2.Do you know what ROM the phone was running before you decided to flash?
Give us information about the device before you flashed, right now the only option I see for you is to go to Intratech's official firmware thread Here, download a firmware and flash through Odin and hopefully it should boot if it's the international version, IF it isn't then it's a guessing game
hey, yeah you're right man, i got too excited to get things running.
i believe it was running just stock firmware but im unaware of what version.
the box says
samsung galaxy II GTI9100M
GTI9100HSB *BKNRB
and ive already went to that thread and downloaded the bell stock firmware and the kernel and it still didnt go. i flashed the firmware, rebooted, then the kernel, rebooted. nothing
You always need to flash CM7 twice. The CWM/CM7 install process is broken and the first attempt doesn't actually do anything other than stuff things up.
Boot into CWM again, do a full wipe, flash CM7 twice and you should be ok.
hey, yeah i just tried doing that, it did nothing. i also have a hard time getting into recovery for some reason. is there something special i sohuld be doing? i turn the phone off and press power+ home+ vol up and most of the time it doesntgo into it.

That's normal. It's picky about timing.
It might pay to try flashing a complete firmware via Odin, either stock or custom, probably doesn't matter. Litening is a good starting point assuming it's compatible with your particular phone.
FWIW - Your phone looks like it's definately a Bell Canada model, you could also try to flash an original firmware back from this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1075278
Then investigate from there and see if you need to do anything else to get it to behave.
man, im really sorry to ask you to spoon feed me here, but i have no idea which firmware to choose from that list, can you help me out?
i also just tried flashing the lightning rom thur odin and it still gets stuck in what i guess is called the bootloop. just a black screen saying samsung galaxy s2 gt-i9100.
edit: one more thing, i originally flashed cwm without being rooted, is that something to think about?
ok, so i seem to have it working now?
i flashed the ATT clockwork mod...my home button doesnt work, but i still somehow managed to clear the cache, and delete user data after. the phone booted up and is running lightning rom.
i get into the rom and none of my bottom buttons work. (menu, home, back)
so i flashed the regular CWM and it doesnt boot up again. any ideas?
when i finally get into cwm 4, when it loads up it tells me right away at the bottom
cant mount /cache/recovery/command
cant mount /cache/recover/log
cant open /cach/recovery/log
cant mount /cache/recovery/last_log
cant open /cache/recovery/last_log
if i try and wipe cash i get
Formatting /cache
E: format_volume: make_extf4fs failed on /dev/block/mmclbk0p7
Cache wipe complete
in fact if i try and do anything i get that same error .
whats the deal guys?
You can probably get yourself back to a normal state by flashing the stock firmware/modem/CSC/kernel from SGS2 Bell/Virgin Canadian Thread Q&A (Root/Unlock/Firmware) Modems KG6/KH3/KI1/3/4, if that is indeed your model.
Also from that thread (I presume he means lose):
KayvinM said:
We do not have a CF-Root version of our kernel so just flash any kernel using the instructions provided in the link and flash the stock kernel back (found below). Root will remain as well as the CWM app but you will loose clockwork mod recovery.

i tried that. i loaded the firmware, then it rebooted and it went right into recovery and gave me a bunch of errors. mostly unable to mount this and that.\
i then went and downloaded the matching kernel and flashed that and that made no diference.

Just grab the Bell one.
i did, and the matching kernel. it didnt work. it fixed the bootloop but it goes right into recovery and shows a bunch of mount errors
You said you tried going into the bootloader (not recovery) and flashing the stock Bell ROM via ODIN?
yeah i flashed the stock bell firmware and kernel via odin and it still didnt work, it just went right into the stock recovery followed by a lot of mounting issues. it's weird. i definately dont have a 4 button att galaxy s2. i have the one big middle button and 2 soft keys. the phone will ONLY boot if i flash att cwm. but the buttons arent the same.
all of this started when i flashed CWM 4.
edit: no, i didnt flash anything to the bootloader via odin. all the things i flashed i checked off as .pda in odin.
everything else i tried to flash it just gives me mount errors.
example; i flashed lightning rom (while having cwm flashed) and it just stayed in bootloop. then i flashed the ATT cwm and it booted no problem. it let me go into recovery and clear the cache and delete user data. only problem is all the buttons are messed up. as soon as i flash back to cwm, it blootloops again and it wont mount anything. i cant clear cache, cant delete user data and cant load usb storage.
im so very confused.
edit: also, while im in cwm 4 and i try and mount stuff, it just says error, example
Error mounting /cache!
Error mounting /data!
So I tried installing the ICS earlier today but failed and now when I tried to flash any firmware I get an error. I'm able to get into download mode and recovery mode.
I tried everything but no luck, so I'm asking you guys for help.

and as you can imagine the list goes on..... and when I hit reboot system now. It just freezes at the Samsung i9100 boot screen/
I'm freaking out right now cuz I know I cant afford another s2 with my financial problems now and I have no back up phone. If anyone can help out that'll be great.

Ive downloaded different roms from the above link here and Im still getting the " E: can't mount cache(no such file exists) please someone help!!!!!!
If you get recovery screen full of red errors just flash again that rom you were flashing and it'll be good.
Sometimes you need to flash rom twice to work. Don't know why.
Maybe some random error during flashing.

Had this problem yesterday when I flashed Bezke's ROM - my assumption is because of the different API's it leave things behind that isn't good for Gingerbread.
Tried flashing my old ROM's but did not work - lots of errors.
Downloaded the official KK5 ROM from the link in previous posts.
Put the file in PDA section of ODIN - let it do its thing. Before I rebooted I then flashed CF-Root KK5 in the PDA section of ODIN and then rebooted.
Et Voila - it worked - was able to go back to my old ROM
Let me know if you need anymore help and hit thanks if this worked please
1a) pick a rom from this thread, maybe try the KK5 rom
1b) turn off phone
2) go into download mode (press+hold home+vol down then press power)
3) open odin
4) kill kies
5) plug in phone
6) check kies is dead
7) wait for the ID:COM section to turn yellow
8) Put the firmware into odin, follow guide in this thread
9) hit flash
IF this doesn't work, repeat the steps but pick a wipe firmware, there are many to chose from, pick any one, you can flash a diff firmware afterwards.
did you guys flash a ROM with an included .PIT file (they usually end in version number 1) ? You need to select it, and tick "repartition" in Odin when flashing, so it will repartition the phone (caution : always backup your internal SD first, and take out the SIM and external SD cards before flashing).
It's very possible that ICS is using a different partition scheme than GB, this is very likely to mess up your partitions (problem is the same when going back to stock after having installed a CM7/9 ROM, always repartition)...

I'm sorry, is this an insult or complement - I do not ask for donations unless for extremely long and tedious hours put into development work. I am sure thanks isn't too much to ask - hell that's what this forum is all about, using other people's knowledge to help yourself out and vice versa - what does it hurt to hit an extra button when browsing through the forums? Rant over lol - I am just trying to help and in order for people to recognize you are helping and not a spammer etc then that is why the thanks meter is in place

"human knowledge belongs to the world", and should never be a bargaining chip - is this how the world works because I'm not sure that it is.

none of those, just a passing thought.
That's nice, because people who would be willing to donate something to someone who put a lot of time and effort in an project will donate no matter what, without even being asked. I'm kind of skepticall about the efficiency of such "demands" in many signatures (even those of people who have no such projects under their belts, and barely even ever help out anyone) but one thing is sure to me : it makes anyone putting this kind of thing in their signature look like cheap beggars... Bums, in other words. ) actually, but I wasn't discussing the basic principle you know
Well no, sadly it ain't the way the world is.. You'll always find some vultures who have no talent of their own, but are willing to do any mischief to feed off someone else's plate and reap the rewards from it, incidentally trying to get filthy rich in the process -i.e. Micro$oft andf the likes of them...
But it's the way I'm dreaming it will one day be

Probably due to you having new Bootloaders search for flash the old bootloader .

william
I got the same problem after I flash the old ZSKE7 with PIT, PDA, PHONE, CSC all checked in odin.
I flash the old bootloader then flash new ZSKI3. The result is - all problems gone and Kies said "This is the latest firmware".
I guess the problem was caused by messed up tar files (wrong order) in the ZSKE7 package I downloaded from somewhere outside xda. The ZSKI3 I downloaded by using CheckFusDownloader_v2.1.exe solved the problem then.
I bought a galaxy s3 2 weeks back, it had only 1 gb ram and me being a hardcore multitasking fan wanted to get more ram some how. I found a software called SWAPPER. But for that software the device had to be rooted. Thats how i got into the world of root. Going through some youtube videos i got the device rooted(Was running jellybean).
This is what i did after rooting, i installed the swapper 2 app and clicked ON (it showed failed cause something called busybox was missing) so i installed BUSYBOX did something with that and again started swapper 2 and jus clicked ON( i didnt have an external card, just gave it a try thats all) but again showed failed. So i quit it.
After a while when i came back and took my phone it was showing the boot screen (Galaxy SIII). i tried restarting but failed. I got into clockwork recovery mode and clicked FIX PERMISSION (just tried playing with it). Nothing was a success.
Finally i downloaded 775MB file of Jellybean stock firmware. I installed throught ODIN. But after the first reboot it again gets stuck at the boot screen. Then i went to recovery mod this i what i see there:
E: failed to mount \efs (Invalid Argument)
E: failed to mount \efs (Invalid Argument)
# MANUAL MODE #
-- Applyuing Multi-CSC.....
Applied the CSC-code : unknown
Successfully applied multi- CSC
I selected the wipe cache partition first( i dont know whether i messed up there)..It showed it was success
then I selected the wipe data/factory reset this is what is see when wiping
-- Wiping data...
Formatting /data...
E:failed to mount /efs (invaled argument)
Formatting /cache....
Data wipe complete.
Then i rebooted. But stills stuck at the boot screen.
i had ICS with this phone when i bought it. I upgraded to jellybean through samsung kies (officially)
I am total noob to android. So i expect a reply with which can be understood by a total noob .

it seems that your efs folder is missing (whereas I am not a pro in that). Did you backup your efs folder as described in usually any rooting guide? If yes there might be an option to get it back onto your phone (saw some threats about efs, maybe do a quick search).
I had the same problem and I tried for several days until I give up. I realizes later that if you didn't backup your EFS folder, you won't be able to fix it with computer. I had my motherboard change for that. I think you need to send your phone to service center unless you do have a backup, there's a lot of tutorial online on how to restore your backup.
Goodluck.

Never said anything about mounting EFS .
One boot to download mode and flash a stock rom .
If you cannot then repeat its a service centre job

No, it's device-specific
you cant flash with odin??
It WORKED!!!!!!!!!
went back to ICS from JB and it worked
for those who had problem in ICS itself then flash a JB ROM
I feel for you dude. Im in the same situation. Failed to mount efs. I left my phone in for repair, because i couldnt reset the binary warranty is void.
So they want €150 to fix it.
On the flip side, i have a back up of my efs folder on my pc. Problem is i cant figure out how to push it onto the phone? Has to be a way.
Looking like you might have to drop it in for repair.
Sent using xda app-developers app
I'll help you

All you need to do is to flash from JB to iCS or ICS to JB
In short both are purely different OS mine worked JB to iCS and reset the custom binary
And gave the SS service centre, got mine done for free!

There is an app you can download look on store or copy it from phone to pc using usb cable?
Sent from my GT-I9300 using XDA Premium HD app
Take external SD card, put any ROM you want on it, and put mega wipe tool on it as well.
Than boot into recovery and use mega wipe tool, use Aroma installer, (you will lose everything, and I mean everything, but it doesnt matter as long as you get your phone working right?.)
After that back to recovery and install your ROM from external SD.
You can flash siyah Kernel for example or any other you like

I can do that no problem, but how do I reset the Binary? The phone won't boot up so I can't use Triangle Away. I have a USB jig but it doesn't reset the Binary on an S3.
My last resort is drop the phone down the toilet and claim on my insurance, but I want try every option before I even consider that.
"EDIT"
My S3 just came back to life!!!! Flashed back to stock ICS and ticked Clear EFS in odin also...and bam! Heard the samsung sound and we are back in business!
