So I have recently been poking through the framework-res.apk and its fairly clear that there is a data icon for hspa. I have never seen it on the taskbar even when (I'm fairly sure) I am on hspa.
Does anyone's phone use the h symbol? And if not where is the xml or whatever that controls it. I was unable to find anything in framework-res (or twframework) that calls the data icons...
Have I overlooked something? Does anyone with experience from other devices know where the control xml is for those devices (g1, nexus)?
Thanks!

3G is HSPA. I don't know what tells it to use it. I recall in early CyanogenMod 5.x there was some bug in it that made the H icon occasionally display. I believe they also ended up removing the icon from the framework.
Even HSPA+ is still 3G (they just got more out of HSPA), but the vibrant doesnt support the changes to HSPA+ protocol, so we would never see it if that is when it is supposed to show.
If you really wanted to see the H icon, you could replace the 3G icon with the H in the framework-res.
While hspa is technically 3g it is an evolution of umts, the original 3g, which is still in use many places. Hspa offers more (about 5x) bandwith than utms and it would be nice to know if I was on an hspa network rather than an umts network without having to go to about phone>status to find out.
On other phones, many custom roms enable the switch to the h icon when on hspa. Our community has yet to do this mod. I was hoping someone could point me at the right xml to get this going....

I doubt that can be changed with just xml. the code for it, i would think, lies somewhere in framework-res. check out the cyanogenMOD codebase or even AOSP.
I believe once were on the official 2.2 for our phones we will have for sure access to it. Guy at the tmo store said the vibrant wont use it til the g2 is launched

But When I Talked To A T-Mobile Employee He Said It'll Pop Up When HSPA+ Is In Service, The G2 Has A H+ Symbol
But yea i agree it would be nice to know if anyone might actually be on it already cause somtimes the 3g is.reallu movin good

Or you could download signal widget...I use it in the kansas city area and works good shows edge and all the way up to hsda and hspa...it will even switch to wifi and show accurate signal...just a quick fix for now if you like to know what network speed is and so on

Ok .. sigh... first off... the "bars" you are referring to indicates cell strength(voice calls/SMS) not data speed or strength. I think the atrix shows h+ no matter what as on my nexus it would change to H when using hsdpa and 3g for when on 3g and likewise for edge and even g **edit that's a cyanogen mod**. NOW as for switching to 2g only and disabling 3g it is ( settings> wireless & networks> mobile networks> select network = your choice) no need for *#*#4636#*#*
On another note if your getting slowdown on 3g try a restart... 2g is not going to be any faster.

Besides going through the different setting menus, there are widgets available in the market that will act as a shortcut to the last (or semi-last) preference. I have it configured in Extended Controls

no matter how many times i go into the 4636 screen and select GSM ONLY it goes right back to GSM/WCDMA

After selecting 2g only mode, my Atrix still gets 4g speeds...
I am running the same phone under AT&T with 4.5.141. I rooted the phone and enabled the greyed out preference pane to select 2g only. Regardless of if I select 2g only there, and if I use the *#*#4636#*#* code, I can run speedtest and get 4g speeds .... Do I just need to go the cyanogen mod? Are there other preference panes that I need to edit? I am jealous of all of you out there who have successfully whipped their Atrix 4g!

You can easily do this yourself if you're rooted.
Download the Framework Assistant from this thread - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1060199
Follow the directions to copy the framework from your phone to your computer
Extract the framework-res.apk with a program like winzip or winrar
Go in and edit the stat_sys_data icons to look how you like; just maintain the image size and name. The image names tell you what type of connection they represent.
Zip the file back up as framework-res.apk ** Set the compression level to Store of zero so that it is not compressed, failing to do so will brick your phone
Use the Framework Assistant to put it back on your phone
Any image editor will allow you to change these images as you like; or you could download and theme out there, extract the framework-res.apk from it with winzip, and copy those images into your framework.
However, do not go editing any images that end with .9.png, these are specially coded and you will mess them up if you edit them in an extracted framework-res.
Thanks for the reply!

Are you sure that will work?. I flashed some themes that claim to properly show HSPA, 3G or EDGE (like Vivid or Tangerine) but they only show 3G or EDGE. The HSPA icon is never shown.
It would be great if this issue could be fixed.

The themes just replace the stock images in the framework-res drawable folder, they don't modify the way the phone monitors the network connection. The problem with the stock images is that H represents both 3G and HSPA. just replace the HSPA with 4G and add a 3G image for the 3G connections and that's it.
The problem may be that you aren't getting HSPA in your area, I know my phone is usually in 3G.

I'm using the Vivid theme (1.3b) and it displays the H logo when I'm in a good HSPA area. If I bounce between HSPA and UMTS a lot, the phone will only show the 3G signal.
Sounds like you may not be getting a solid HSPA signal.
Run *#*#4636#*#* the go into Phone Information and see what Network Type you're on.
Mine shows HSPA and as you can see in the screenshot, I get the H icon.
=>
You're right. Phone only sees UMTS.
I had HSPA with my Captivate. I have to admit it used to switch between HSPA and UMTS a lot, but it did show HSPA frequently.
I'm using the 4.1.4.2 Telstra radio, and data speeds seems to be much faster than the AT&T 4.1.8.3 radio.
Guys, I am trying to understand how to change my mobile network access on the phone.
I am on the ATT version of the SGS2 and have repeatedly used
*#301279# -->Change HSPA Revision--->R99-HSPA off, but I continue to display the H+ in the status bar. My speed tests don't change at all with regard to the selection I make (1,2,3). Am I doing something wrong? Am I supposed to "save" the settings after I make the selection?
I live in South Florida and we have H+ here, so I am really not sure what is going on. The phone also displays my network as UTMS and I have NEVER seen 3G in the status bar. I am using my old sim from my Iphone 3gs with data unlimited plan with the correct (4g) APNs.
Any ideas guys?

There isn't any, you change from 3g / h / h+ depending on your network and location.
Only thing you can do is switch network mode to "wcdma only"
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda app-developers app
There might be some option to do that to force HSPAP ONLY Just need to find where actually stored the configuration of the band selection.
From the network side, i get full coverage of HSPAP in my area, its just some algorithm / configuration that cause to the band to be changed due to threshold
I need to disable ability to get to other bands than HSPAP
Maybe flash so different modified modem, but this i prefer less from touching configuration that can just disable the other network types.
I found some section on the build.prop that called ril
but still didn't found something that reach the thing i want to solve.
I think if we will do that solution it will make the phone to have more battery life because there is nothing that.always searching for another a bit closer in dBs band, the phone stays on the band you want and you also get high speed
Please ROM teams, if you can help me to do that, i think it would be useful thing for all of us here
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda premium
Why do you WANT to force HSPAP? I only get HSPAP when I'm downloading files otherwise I'm on HSDPA
That indeed would be interesting to know how to force HSPAP mode. I would like to know how to do that. Been researching but did not find anything so far.
Is there a way to force LTE so that 1X and EVDO are disabled?
The LTE Only mode in the Device Info screen via Additional Options via the Advanced Signal Info app will not work. I am able to make EVDO Only selection work as confirmed by going to Mobile Networks under System Settings and then More Settings.
However, LTE Only selection will have no effect if Global or LTE/EVDO/CDMA is already selected. No change is made as confirmed under Mobile Networks. The LTE Only selection reverts back to the previous selection.
If EVDO Only mode is active, then LTE Only selection will prompt for Global mode periodically until the user confirms. Selecting Cancel will just postpone the prompt to enable Global mode for a short time. Unless user selects Global mode, EVDO Only mode is confirmed as active in the Mobile Networks settings page.
Another method that also failed is using the app Hidden Menu to open the IOTHiddenMenu. Under LTE Mode Menu, one can select LTE Service Forced, but no changes or popup notification appears. Popup notifications appear for other selections in the same LTE Mode Menu. The other selections under the LTE Mode Menu also do have a working effect-- it is just the LTE Service Forced selection that has no effect.
This is pretty disappointing as I believe the baseband or radio software version does not support Forced LTE. The HTC Rezound and Motorola RAZR seem to work fine with Forced LTE.

Bad news bud. This phone doesn't support SVDO. So without LTE you'll never be able to tether and make calls at the same time
Sucks because my old crappy Thunderbolt had the right radio setup for that, but the newer device doesn't. Meh. I'm just glad my area is fully soaked in 40/15mbps LTE speeds.

Lol, I think you misunderstood what I meant. I DON'T want calls or texts interrupting the data, so I want to force it to data only while on 3g since I don't have 4g at home. I used to do it all the time on my Incredible (HDR only) and Touch Pro 2 (EVDO only). I did figure it out using the Hidden Menu app though, so I'm good to go now.
Verizon did just build a tower about two miles north of my house. Surely it will be a 4g tower. It just isn't operational yet, but hopefully soon I'll be soaking up some 4g myself.

I too would be interested in something that forced 4g. I live in an area where 4g is present but weak, and it switches back to 3g which is much slower data speed wise....
The phone info app will do what you want. I had to use it for a bit when I lost my 4g prl. It will force lte only, evdo only, etc

It is an option, but when you enable it, it doesnt do anything. When ever I used it on my rezound, you would see the phone switch networks. When it would not find lte, it would show no network in both the app, and the status bar. When I do it on my note 2, there is no switch, and it maintains 3g. What version is the app that you are you are using? The other thing that confuses me is that i lost network mode on my phone in settings. It isn't in my wife's phone either, and hers is modded very little. Mine is rooted, deodexed, with multiwindow, and 23 toggles enabled. Thanks for the reply
