MicroDrives are sensitive to presuure; when you were rising or descending, the change in pressure could have caused the damage.
recommendation: turn off the device for take-off and landing.
My buddy had a similar problem with his. His MicroDrive stopped working. WMStorage didn't fix the issue either. He was running the original ROM that came with the device and some software, nothing more. The only thing that brought back the drive was to do a hard reset, then flash the factory ROM back onto the device. I've had issues with the drive myself so run everything off of my SD Card and only use the MicroDrive for temporary storage or backups of my SD Card. This sucks that we can't trust the drive. Just makes me nervous using it.
agreed! I'd rather prefer 4gig flash memory to a 8gig unsafe microdrive.
but it's all about marketing issues
very true..all my data was lost...i guess it ISS becuz of the rise in pressure and all that,..but my microdrive izz up and working again..!
My microdrive had corrupted twice before, and I had thought that using the miniSD would completely solve the problem. I was wrong.
Yesterday, my genuine Toshiba miniSDHC lost everything on it. I could not recover it with Pocket Mechanics Professional. Soft reset does not help, as it did previously. I don't know if this was caused my the repeated removal and insertion if card which performed in attempting to fix my SIP selection problem.
The lessen for me is, do a regular backup to PC and do not take out and put in the card without switching off the device.
I still have not reinstalled my applications and data yet because today is the day to upgrade my Dopod to WM6. I'm really looking forward to the upgrade. I expect some of my applications to be dumped for compatibility reason, not in the end I'd have a transformed and better computer.
Htc Advantage Microdrive Failure
I want to add my voice to the concerns raised regarding the much sung about MicroDrive with 8GB.
I have lost all the data I installed and stored on the MicroDrive. I had photos, documents - some of them work related and do not have them anywhere at all.
Does anyone have any idea how I can undelete or recover these?
By the way, I did not delete them, they were simply gone!
Please help.

Try to use WMStorage which will allow the drive/s to be recognized under Windows as an external storage drive. Then get yourself a copy of Ontrack Easy Recovery and use that to recover the lost files. I've never had to recover files from my MD or SD yet on my phone but my cousin had a camera that did something like this....all pictures just dissappeared and I used the program and got back stuff he forgot about that had been looooong gone. Works well. Hope this helps
curious?

Thanks ltxda, I will try your advice right away.
YOSEFE.
Thanks ltxda for pointing me to WMStorage. I downloaded and installed the software. My Devive and the Microdrive are recognised as you stated.
However, the only hitch I hit is the cost of Ontrack Easy Recovery, is there no free reliable recovery software somewhere?
Thanks in anticipation.

Not sure if there is a free trial available or not. You may want to check their site. I just have a copy since I purchased one for work. You can also go to www.download.com and try one of the other recovery software trials from there. I'm sure there are a few there that may help or you could try alternate resources.
micro drive not recognised

I agree with you. Makes me sick that I have this EXPENSIVE device and don't have enough trust in the one feature they pushed because of the constant problems.
Have some questions for you:
- How were you transferring files to the MD? ActiveSync, Vista or WMStorage?
- Would you mind posting the resolution here in case others have the same problem?

Care to share your solution mate.
just use the
sorry guys been busy at work, i didnt really fix it without losing my data. i just used the restore microdrive option and then re-format it, lost all my data but at least its working. lol. still pissed off though.
i fiqured some bits out though, wether your using active sync or wm5torage 1.75 and your transfering huge amount of data at once windows then give an error cant complete , cant find drive source.
So I had to do all the restore microdrive thing again but was just testing why it happen the first time.
good thing to do is to use wm5torage 1.75 to transfer but only transfer some amount and wait for awhile and continue.
File Scavenger
File Scavenger is much cheaper for recovering files. It works perfectly for me. The demo is a teaser. It works but doesnot let you recover files. It shows that it can recover the files.

THANKS MATE i just tried it.
My Atrix will not mount of format a micro SD card. I have several other phones that can read, write and format different micro SD cards but the Atrix will not acknowledge that a card is inserted.
1. Is there anything simple that I might check to regain this access?
2. Can I still root and mod the device by creating a directory at root called "/sdcard" or is all such hacking lost? For one, I would like to access webtop w/o a dock.
History: The phone worked like a champ for several months when it fell into a bucket of water. After three or four days in a bag of rice I was very surprised to see the thing not only boot but be fully operational. The only damage was the existing SD card was wiped and cannot be formatted, The device will not read other SD cards and the headset connector will disconnect calls if the headset plug is bumped.
All in all I quite surprised and lucky at how well the device handled the trauma. Another happy surprise is that the phone has 10GB free w/o a card!
Any technical suggestions?
Thanks guys,
Bill

your phone mounts the internal storage to /sdcard and the external sd to /sdcard-ext so you can still root and do everything else using the internal storage. just follow all the guides as normal.
if you use a file browser and navigate to root, you'll see what i mean
so my panos and just them not any picture are just gone outta my albums no other picture at all and its not like i dont have room on my sd card...im on cm9 2.1 and i really want them iv been looking around and seeing if they are in a cash folder or something but no luck. anyone have ideas about what happen to them? its not like my pocket is smart enough to just del my pano pictures and no others....please help me out

I hope somebody can help me. I'm excited, because Joker got the camera working in CM9 0.2.0, so I installed it, but now I can't find any of my pictures!
I tend to take a lot of panoramic pictures, so many that I have this cute little nickname for them. I call them "panos". Isn't that cute? Anyway, I know they take up a lot of space, but I've got plenty of room on my SD card.
I can't understand where they might have gone. My photos are pretty important to me (I take pictures of really cool things like my **** when I'm using the toilet [which is why I use panoramic mode], and my sister when she's in the shower), so I'd really like to get them back.
I've looked all through my SD card, even through directories that look like maybe they're just cache directories, but I can't find my photos for the life of me.
I thought maybe I "pocket deleted" them, but surely I wouldn't have accidentally deleted all of them in my pocket, would I have?
Please help me. I'm not sure I can catch my sister in the shower again.

First of all, if you're running 0.2.0, I recommend upgrading to 0.3.3. It's really tits. But if that's what you're running, and you didn't edit vold.fstab, then you might not be seeing your SD card at all. Or, if you are running a new version, or you did edit your vold.fstab, but you have "Use internal storage" checked under Settings->Advanced, then your SD card is mounted at /emmc, and your internal memory is what's mounted at /sdcard.
So in either case, you may be looking at the contents of internal memory instead of your SD card, so what you expect to be there isn't.
If you took them with the stock camera, your pictures will be in /sdcard/DCIM/Camera as long as that's where your SD card is mounted.
Oh, and don't worry about those pics of your sister. I've got better ones I can send you.

hahahaha about that sister thing did that come from the cm9 thread? yea im on 3.1 i think i just hit the wrong key. i just thought of this should i just mt on my compter and look there? i did look thru emmc with no luck but i always have my sd card mounted
I seem to have accumulated a lot of stuff in my internal storage. Every time I have flashed a new ROM, it seems to just move everything into a directory called '0' and starts the root from scratch.
I am about 6 '0' directories deep now, and its taking up 10gb.
I would like to just backup the whole lot to my PC, then next time I flash a new ROM just format the internal SD card as well and get back all that precious space!
Plugging in the USB and copying over that way is apparently going to take over 1 day to copy everything, and I think from trying to do this before it got to a certain point and then something broke. Its using the soft mount, without a drive letter (this is so SO much slower and less successful than back in the day with the proper mass storage mounting).
Also Kies wont even connect to the phone even though a) I am loathe to use something like that and b) it would likely not get all the files I want anyway.
So how can I just take a full backup of my Internal Storage, ensuring it gets all files, and doesn't take 24 hours+ (which is ludicrous for only 10gb of files)
Cheers

How does it take more than one day to copy 10 gb? Mine copies 90 gb in less than an hour. There might be a problem with ur cable or computer.

Its an i7, 12gb RAM, etc. Definitely doesn't need an upgrade. And I get the same issues copying to other machines, using other cables, on different ROMs etc. Just seems like MTP is a buggy POS. Have seen other people complaining about the same thing, so I presumed it was just the way it was.
Might see if my other halves N4 is as bad, would rule out my S3 or not.
Anyways, couldn't get it mounted in Ubuntu, all sorts of issues. Might try setup FTP server on the phone and go over wifi

Nexus 4 uses MTP too. I doubt so though tat mtp is buggy. I can copy nandroid back ups over 2 gb in less than 5 mins.

MTP still being lame regardless of PC / OS. this is getting silly now. tried an ftp server on the phone but it seems really flakey on files it moves and fails on
all i want is to take a complete internal SD backup, so I can do a full wipe and start from scratch, cant believe it is this hard to do
is there anything that will dump internal SD to external SD? then I can just remove the external SD and copy manually

yeah. I guess u could just copy from ur internal SD to ur external SD manually. 10 gb... Well... On a phone. Ur 'i7 12 gb' com takes 1 day plus to copy so i hope u are mentally prepared xD. I will rly just use the com to copy paste. Since if u copy and paste it in ur external sd. It will be thr forever unless u copy and paste it to ur com. Which will take another day.
I just purchased a Samsung Galaxy S9 + in April, replacing my Samsung Galaxy S5. I was using a 32 Gig SanDisk SD card which I encrypted in the S5. I decrypted the SD card in the S5 and inserted it into the new S9+. No problems, it was recognized and I could read/write to it.
2 weeks ago, I decided to encrypt the SD card in the S9+. I went into Security, and Encrypt SD Card. A short while later, the phone displayed a message that my SD card was now encrypted. Nice! I re started the phone, etc...
The next day, I decided to verify the encryption. I removed the SD card and popped it into my laptop. (phone not connected in any way to the computer) I was shocked that I could read all the data! I put it back into the phone and sure enough, the phone said that the SD card was encrypted.
I then re formatted the SD card in my laptop, tried again encrypting it in the phone. Phone displayed that it was now encrypted, but NO, I could still read the data from my laptop. I even tried from a different laptop. I have restored the phone back to factory defaults maybe 5 times, testing the encryption, still each time the phone says the SD card is encrypted, but it is still readable from any computer.
I drove to the T-Mobile Store and let them know. They verified that I did everything correctly, but said I needed to call Samsung. Samsung sent me to see the Samsung rep in a Best Buy about 40 minutes from my house. Not pleased, but I went. The rep had no answer for me. Said I needed to go back to T-Mobile to get a new phone.
I called Samsung again. They asked me what kind of SD card I was using. I said it was a SanDisk, but it is working fine, I could read and write to it. He insisted that Samsung suggests the Samsung EVO Class 10 SD cards.
So I went out and purchased a Samsung EVO Class 10 64 Gig SD card. Again, restored the phone to default, encrypted the card, but still readable from my laptop!
I went back to T-Mobile and demanded a new phone. It was a real battle because it has been 45 days or so. They wanted to send my NEW phone out for "repair". Not going to happen, give me a new phone. They did.
Put the new SD card into the phone, encrypted it, took it out and tested it on my laptop, ALL DATA STILL READABLE!
I called Samsung again, (3rd call) After much discussion, the woman called their support service center. She came back and said that they are getting reports of this and that they are working on an update and it will be released in the future. I asked when??? She could not tell me. And when it is released, how soon will it roll out to T-Mobile users?
She could not tell me. She transferred me to another tech. He asked me to send it in for repair. I told him I did not want to do that, it was a brand new phone, both of them! I asked him to call the service center. He did and came back and said it was not a common issue and my phone needed to be repaired.
!??? I said that I have two brand new phones, right out of the box, 45 days apart, and I just happened to get the two phones with this problem?
He then said that I needed to send my new phone to a 3rd party vendor, that is not even a Samsung company. ( "u break, we fix" or something like that ) Then gave their phone number so I can call, get an appointment, call them for a shipping label etc. I was shocked!!!
*** To ANYONE that has an SD Card that you "think" is encrypted, test it! Take it out of your phone and see if you can read the data from a computer. If it is readable, call Samsung, or your other phone manufacture. This is not an isolated case. I just by sure luck did not get the only two Samsung S9 + phones with this problem, 45 days apart!
I said to Samsung, can you imagine how Samsung is opening themselves up to liability? There are thousands and thousands of people (probably) who have SD cards in their phones, that their phone says is encrypted, but it's really not!
I have a brand new S9+, that I can't trust to use it.
Does anyone have any ideas?
Please also post your message to the phone boards so hopefully they will take notice.
You might want to try that again. In a previous test I did, the whole card isn't encrypted, but the files themselves were. You can still see the directory structure and such, but try and open a JPG or MP3 file on the card and it won't work. Each file is hashed in some way that it can't be read in any useful way by the computer.
did test as suggested...

I took your suggestion and can confirm that I could not actually open any "file". Though I could see the complete file structure, folders and subfolders, and individual filenames. But I could not open any files.
It shocks me that NO one from T-Mobile or Samsung suggested looking into this.
While this is of some comfort, I still feel that this is a huge security and privacy issue. After reading your reply, (by the way, a huge thank you) I saw this:
---snip---
General-purpose file systems with encryption
Unlike cryptographic file systems or full disk encryption, general-purpose file systems that include filesystem-level encryption do not typically encrypt file system metadata, such as the directory structure, file names, sizes or modification timestamps. This can be problematic if the metadata itself needs to be kept confidential. In other words, if files are stored with identifying file names, anyone who has access to the physical disk can know which documents are stored on the disk, although not the contents of the documents.
---snip---
This is probably what Samsung is doing. Again, I still feel that this is a huge security and privacy issue.
Thank you again…
I agree this revelation is a bit disturbing.

I mentioned in my reply that the the fact that a file in a folder was not readable was of some comfort. I have thought about it a lot today and I have to say it is NOT of any comfort. The fact that any encrypted drive or file is readable is not acceptable or secure. Imagine this, if you are like me, I end up taking pictures or scanning receipts and saving them to my phones memory card.
Why not, it's encrypted and secure!
What if a Samsung Galaxy S9+ was stolen or lost, OR if someone at work or even a family member took a phone and popped out the sd card and put it in their computer, imagine what they may find just by looking at the folder and file names? They do NOT have to open the actual end file to find out so much about you?
What if your "encrypted sd card" file structure was like this:
Medical > Cancer Screening > Test Results > MakingAWill.doc
Local Funeral Homes.htm
Survivor Benefits. pdf
Does it really matter that you can't open or read "MakingAWill.doc" or "Local Funeral Homes.htm" ???
No! What good is a so called encrypted drive if you can just pop out the sd card and view all the folder and file names? Where is the security!???
Has anyone else tested this and verified their sd card / expanded memory encryption? If so, could you please post your results? Can you read the file and folder names / file system?
Samsung REALLY needs to address this. This is a huge privacy and security issue.
