Hey everyone
my phone gets heated up itself. Not very hot but slightly hot and it gets cooled itself. What could be the reason or can it damage the phone.
Thanks in advance.

Well, that sometimes happens to my LG P500, but I think it is normal.
Mine behaves the same way...
I think it becomes hot (warm we should say) mostly in 3G mode, especially when combined with tethering.
every smart phone heats up when doing a task for a continued amount of time. your phone will heat up while talking a call for more than 30 minutes, watching video (like a movie) downloading data via wifi, 3g and 2g. browsing the gallery for an extended amount of time.
but it is not the phone cpu that heats up. its the rapidly discharging battery.
lg p500 can heat up to a temperature of 55 degrees celcius while discharging and 44 while charging though the standard charger.
so dont worry, it is a normal phenomenon and the phone will not get damaged due to such heat.
Yh my p500 gets red hot if I use it a lot which is getting annoying
Our phones is really HOT.

Well said. Thanks for the info
You can try with an other battery. If the problem persist, is an phone issue...
If is 'hot' as 'I cannot keep the phone in my hands' probably is a phone issue. If it is 'warm' is just like any android more or less. But as DeuxEx says, just try another battery if you can. They cost 3-5$ each in ebay.
/W
as all the above said, your being heated up is not unusual,
if you are overclocking, set a temperature profile
or take off the battery case and put it into the fridge for 3 minutes! (i really did this once )
Anyone returning their evo because of a overheating problem? Seems to be a serious problem and don't want it blowing up in my face. Read the article yesterday and checked mine and it charged at 4.348 mv. Or is this a software issue?
You wouldn't happen to have a eBay battery would you? Also the battery may get hot the first few charges. To reach 4.3V, well I'm not exactly sure how that's happening. Take it back I guess but if its your first charges then just give it time.
Unless the phone gives you a warning, or just shuts off its probably not overheating. You would be surprised how hot these can get and still be in a normal heat range. I tax my Evo pretty hard and it will get pretty damn hot, but never overheat hot.
What are you doing when it heats up? Are you playing games, charging, talking. Maybe some more info?
I've had mine in my pocket and noticed that some live wall papers really get the phone cooking. The My Beach one almost burned my leg! I guess my phone turned on in my pocket and it was going to town with random screen pushes. The phone was hot enough to hurt sensitve skin.
I've had my OG EVO get griddle pan hot several times. It has survived as well as the batteries. Every time I think I solved it, the next time it was something else.
Knock on wood, so far my 3VO hasn't got as hot. Yet.
next time you phone gets hot check and see how well your gps works.
there are some funky things going on with this phone.
Playing spider man and game froze the phone got extremely hot had to do a batt pull battery died in like 7 Min's
initial batt life was great like 14 hours and still had 50 percent after a week it got OG evo crappy, factory reset and juice def ultimate and batt is back to great.
Don't know if i should return for exchange.

No I'm using the stock battery and it was just plug into the wall charger and not doing anything. Don't we have 4.2v batteries? Shouldn't it not be charging anything about that?

It was just plugged into the wall charger and i wasn't using the phone. I still don't think it should be charging over 4.2v since that's what we have?

It did go to 102f but i guess that's normal but sometimes it goes to 105 or 106 while charging.... But I have the evo4g and that never chargers above 4.2v... Just kinda worried... Don't want this phone blowing up in my face.
Haven't had this issue. I've been traveling and have changed the phone quite a bit from using the phone as a game system. It does get warm after 30 mins of angry birds. Nothing extreme however.

It wont blow up on you. You should be safe at those ranges. when you start hiting 115 and 120 thats when you may want to unplug it and turn it off.
I had mine charging in the car mount last Sunday while running google nav, and the LED started blinking red and green. I assume this is the overheat indicator, although I can't find it in any documentation.
I had one weird overheating incident right after getting it activated at the Sprint store. 15 minutes later, it had been sitting on my desk and I go to pick it up and its crazy hot. I quickly pulled the back off and removed the battery, the battery was not hot, it was something behind the cameras. CPU I suppose. I waited a few minutes to put the battery back in but then it wouldn't turn on (overheating protection?). Went back to the the Sprint store for an exchange. Waited, waited. In the meantime I put the battery back in and it started up. After waiting 45 minutes with no help in sight I gave up... sigh. Sprint stores around here are always a PITA.
I haven't seen this problem again but seriously what the f? I went ahead and applied the OTA updates in case they included some fix for this.
Yeah, in car charger mine hit 114 with gps going. Took it back, better but not great with the new one 102. EVO 4g ran hot but that was self induced. Oc etc... Stock shouldn't go above 102 ever

my phone regularly gets to 105F from regular use sometimes; using the internet browser over wifi, playing games (cut the rope got the phone to 107F), charging also heats up the phone. I don't have auto syncing enabled.
is that normal operating temperature?
Disable auto synching of apps. no more overheating

My question is should a phone be charging over 4.2 when the voltage of the battery is 4.2 max? Wouldn't that greatly reduced the battery life if charged over that voltage? Anyone care to explain? Cos I'm really not sure what the implications are.

The voltage of the stock battery is 3.8V. I am surprised it would see higher voltages but it may have a variance that is +-(.4) even when charging the voltage shouldn't vary that much, but the amperage should increase instead to charge the battery and run the phone at the same time. I am not sure where you seen the voltage at though so if its an app, how accurate is that app. How often does this happen as well?
hi,
i have SE x10i and i downloaded some apps in the market and my phone suddenly restarts... and i flash it on SE PC companion and its now ok
the problem is that when ever i charge the phone the battery heats up and then my phone also heats up and shuts down... i get the battery out for some few minutes to cool down and then it gets ok.. but because i want to charge the battery but still same problem..
what should i do??
regards,
red
Are you heavily using the phone (gaming, watching videos, streaming, surfing the net) while charging?
Install setcpu and use a temperature trigger of 50C (or what you want) to limit the cpu.
Mine is set for 768Mhz.
And if you are using it while its charging try not to cup the back of the phone, you trap the heat.
If it keeps shutdown when you charge, you should bring it to SE service. Maybe this is hardware problems.

i already did that sir..
i also update the rom to GB but still the problem is the same..
when the cp heats up its restart automatically..
@all
where can i DL such apps that can normalize the cpu's temperature..
i cant charge normally because as what i have said
it heats up and shutsdown thee phone..
Aw man that sucks, keep in mind your battery life will get worse if its heated too much.

yeah really really sucks.. i cant normally charge with my charger
coz when the temperature rises it will stop charging ang the phone restarts or automatically off...
thats why i need your opinions! please..
i dont think this is a hardware problem because
this is brand new... and i dont use it agressively...

Not all brand new devices are in perfect shape. There's always a factory defective one..
Try consulting your problem at any service center of S.E. or ask for a replacement. As you said its a brand new device it has warranty.

whats the solution??
Hi Nucleus55,
Although i'm relatively new to xda, i'm also relatively "old" to h/w related problems, so here's is one piece of advise if you like.
As stated also from other member's previously "-- X10B --", if the phone's temp rises to a degree where it auto-reboots and stops charging, and if this occurs every single time, then you should probably replace it from your nearest SE shop. Especially if it is new and under warranty. As stated from "-- X10B --" there is always the possibility of a h/w error or in construction and/or design flaw in that specific model. You never know.
Personally, i got this "batterylife" widget (from market) which shows battery status and temp, and for me, when i charge my phone, it has never gone above 40 degrees Celsius while idle (charging only) and up to (MAX) 48 while under heavy stress during charging, like games, videos, etc.
I have never seen it gone to 50 degrees.
You could also do as previously stated by "kindred7", that is, install an application and set the max degree to 50 degrees, although i strongly recommend (this is always my personal opinion), when it comes to ALL electronics, to always keep them as cool as possible. If this is not possible, because you tend to stress it all the time either from games or videos, then you could find a better cooling solution, like maybe removing its cover while charging.
I have just tried it myself about a half an hour ago to see if there is any change in temp, and i have noticed that in my work space where the ambient temp is around 25 degrees, the phone while charging and uncovered, was stable at 38 degrees Celsius.
Also, if you a lot of functions ON like Wi-Fi, GPS, Bluetooth, then it is obvious that the phone temp will rise to its max. If so, then try to disable any things you don't need, not only while charging but always.
That's all that i can think of right now
this has happened to me after i updated my x10i to 2.3.3 .. the battery life has just got worse and sometimes while heavy use the battery temp rises very much.
Any Solution will be helpful.

From the symptoms you've listed I'm pretty sure you need a new battery due to the heat exposure.
When you are charging your phone make sure you have your screen off. I know this sounds stupid but I found it stopped my phone from overheating while charging
my battery is heating aswell
i upgraded and did not use my phone for 5 hrs ish and it was just on my table and then i smell smoke frome my phone and it was like my battery was a bbq

yes i think this is the problem that i forgot.
i expose it to sunlight while we are drinking some beer with friends outside of our house . and
because i have some sms i grab my phone and damn it was so hot.
so i put my phone inside the house and after that it started to resart whenever the temp rises, or even i use a short period of time...

and suddenly it stops from charging
and the phone is very hot as well as the battery
ill try to replace battery, if still the same
maybe i will forcely go to the store that i bought my phone.
I have the same problem
maybe SE company should read all the negative feedbacks on there Phones...
and make some upgrades of this ****.
I've been noticing a good amount of heat up by the camera during moderate use. I thought this was a CM7 problem since I had been on it since day 1, but I am now on UnNamed and the problem persists. After some googling it does seem that many other people are having this problem. Not on WIFI, and not in a poor signal area either. Just wanted to see if anyone had any leads as to the cause. What is a good app for monitoring CPU usage by app?
Yes, it may get a little hot but it isn't something to worry about as far as I know. I've gamed for three hours straight and not had any problems except for a low battery life!
yeah mine gets hot near the camera during use but i dont think its a problem
I use a battery monitor.
From what I've read, it will shut off for protection. I've heard that as long as it doesn't ever get too much above 130 F, you should be OK.
Now if it constantly stays high, there may be a problem. Mine stays around 80 F most of the time and the highest I've ever seen is 99 F but i don't game much or use my camera. One thing you don't wanna do is charge it while hd gaming or charge it in a hot car. My infuse reached 146 F one time doing that.

Somehow 'Words with Friends' caused my phone to really warm up a lot. More so than I've seen with any other situation and on numerous occasions. Luckily I suck at that game and uninstalled it...

When I first got CM7 running on this thing, I tore through the market installing the apps I'm used to. When I was finished, I noticed that it was indeed a bit warm in the area you described. It wasn't hot enough to cause discomfort, just warm enough to note.
I notice when my phone gets hot in that area when it is around 30% remaining and I charge it. I also notice that when it is charging, it really isn't charging but battery is draining. When I got home and charged it at 30%, I left it sitting there for about 30 minutes and when I checked the phone again, it was at 25%. GPS and wifi was turned off. I decided to power down the phone and remove the battery for 5 minutes. I started working fine after that. I noticed it getting hot again today when I plugged it in to charge at 40% but this time it actually was charging. I am running stock rom but rooted. Should this be a concern?
Seems as though a lot of people are having a variation of this problem. Hopefully it is addressed soon.
The CPU will always get a bit warm if it's running.
If it's getting very hot when the screen is off, you've probably got some background task wakelocking the phone.
My phone's screen gets pretty hot when I run web videos/flash videos on HSPA.
Runs a tiny bit warm when i'm running pristine 3D Tegra games on it...otherwise no.
Hi,
I am facing this issue from past few weeks. First time I noticed that my phone is heating up very fast when I was playing Angry Birds Space, after few days I uninstalled it fearing my phone my blow as its reaching high temps.
Next time I noticed I was watching Live tv through 3G and within 5 minutes it started heating up. I turned off the BRAVIA engine and on to see if there is any difference and to my vain there is no change.
I went to Sony support center as my phone freezed and I didnt know how to come out of it. I tried pressing the power button for few secs and it did nothing, later at the support center I learned we have to press power button and press volume button to restart or shut down the phone. Anyway I informed the tech person about the heating problem and he informed to update the software and I allowed him to update the software to see if it makes any difference.
Now after owning this phone for 1 month, I understood whenever I am browsing, downloading or watching tv through 3G the phone is heating up.
Can anyone help me with this problem and by the way I dont have the yellow tint which few people have experienced.
Thank in advance.
3G is widely know for hungry battery consuption and big heating up.
That is not an problem.

There is no problem.
Also, I used to have an iPhone... MAN that thing could get hot when there was a looped process!!!
It is normal for the phone to heat up when you are playing CPU/GPU intensive games, or are using 3G heavily. It should get warm, but not so hot that you have problems holding it (happened to my old iPhone).
Its another "my phone heats up when i use it" thread..
Well, er yeah it would heat up when you use it!
The mean maximum temperature ranges between 34 °C (93 °F) and 40 °C (104 °F) in May.

You live in a warm climate so heating is exacerbated. Not much you can do other than underclock.
Ogw..

It has an cpu in it.. Memory a battery a screen etc..
Also dual core phone..
You know this phone is fast?
Yes!?
