I have a hardware locked vibrant. I cannot access recovery with my vol + / - buttons however I have found a way to enter download mode almost 100%
1. power off phone
2. While phone is powering off plug in power cable
3. hold -/+ volume
4. the phone enters d/l mode as soon as the charge connects
DOWNLOAD MODE!!!
but my question is. Is download mode sufficient enough for modding/romming my phone? Is access to Recovery needed or very important? Seeing as I can enter recovery with clockwork.

and how do you get out of dl mode? what happens if you get that pc and triangle screen? how will you put it to dl mode again with locked vibrant?
If you can get into dl mode you can get into recovery. Hardware locked means just that. They use the same key combo but different timing.
EDIT: nvm... I can't read lol.
I just pull battery to get out of d/l mode, however, recovery mode has not been obtainable. Regardless of which method i try. I have tried over 200+ times trying to get into recovery so im really confused. Think its safe to still Mod/Rom with only a d/l mode..
so if i can get into download mode. i should be able to get into recovery? because i can't get this damn to get into recovery via hardware buttons. but download works everytime
call tmobile, tell them your phone is defective (cant access boot recovery)... they will send you a replacement phone... profit
(i know, i did this)

I have this same problem...
You should be fine with just dl mode, tho most roms will be flashed trough recovery. In your case, I would keep your phone. You risk Tmo sending you a completely hw locked phone.
To get into recovery, you still have 2 options:
Rom Manager if your phone works fine or
'adb reboot recovery' in adb if you happen to get a boot loop (this is hit or miss)
If you happen to get the phone!computer screen while ODIN-flashing, dl mode is more than sufficient to restore... hope this helps
I wouldnt start flashing without recovery. I had the same issue and returned the phone. If you don't want to return it, you can always use odin to flash with download mode, but clockwork is much, much more convenient. Like I said tho, I would return it. The phone is defective.
If you can get to DL mode.. install Odin and flash to stock.. Get phone rooted.. Install ROM manager and flash any rom you want and your done.. A lot of users probelm is to get into DL mode.. but if you can get to it.. you shoul have not any problem falshing another ROM..
Download mode is the more important of the two.
If something goes horribly wrong, Download can save you where nothing else can.
As others have stated, as long as your phone is functional, you can always adb reboot recovery and get into the recovery menu to do whatever you need to ['adb reboot download' works as well, but if your phone isn't functional, you can access it]
yeah i bought my phone off CList. The phone has no warranty w/ Tmobile. But after calling Samsung warranty (AKA INDIA) I had to cause a fit and ask for a supervisor. they gave me a shipping label and said they would "Reflash" my phone. Is the issue with entering recovery mode = a software issue or hardware issue?. Now im reluctant in sending in my device because they may send me another locked one.
BTW thanks for all the info.
Both my phones (original then new waranteed) have the same issue. I flash roms/etc. but I am VERY careful when I do it...HW locked phones suck, and T-Mobile says it is not a defect--in essence, they said that function doesn't exist to them.
...riiiiiiight.

Just received a replacement Vibrant and can not boot into recovery through the power/volume up/down method, has something changed?
To get into recovery mode you need to hold Volume Down and Power Button.
I have booted into recovery many times with my original Vibrant, my replacement will not boot.
Um, the OP explicitly said that they can't get into recovery with volup+voldn+power, on a replacement phone. Replacement=more likely they know how to do it that I do, but I just received a new Vibrant from T-Mo-USA today and I cannot get it into recovery either.
VolUp+VolDn held, power until 'vibrant samsung' then release power is supposed to be recovery, but not working for me. Just VolDn or just VolUp and power only boots the phone as well. Waiting with power held until screen goes black again then 'vibrant samsung' returns is also ineffective. I can get to download mode with vol buts while plugging USB, and I've double-checked that both vol buts are working. It /is/ possible that a change took place and recovery is no longer accessible through that key combo...

Quick Boot specifically states that you must ALREADY have root status for it to work.
So we need Root for Quick Boot to get into Recovery Mode, but we need to first get into Recovery Mode to get Root...
Ring around the rosy...
Anybody else have any ideas?
^ he didn't say he didn't have root already. I also posted an alternate method to root above without stock recovery.
Have either of you found a way to recovery with key combos yet. I too can not get recovery with vol buttons. Only thru terminal, adb, rom manager, etc. i'd really like to know if anyones found a solution to this??? I'd like to be able to boot recovery manually in case I cant boot into home screen for some reason.
Someone mentioned getting it to work while having it plugged into the charger.
Frankly, the only way I was able to get into Recovery Mode was through the ADB method.
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
I called T-Mobile regarding this and they agree it should work with hardware buttons and are sending me a replacement.
Same issue. Got the phone on Aug 23 and the only way I can go to recovery is via ADB and ClockWorkMod
Hmmm, I have the same issue. The funny thing is that I can get into recovery on my girl's phone just fine. And I can't on mine. They only way I could get into recovery was by using the 1-click root. Now, I can use ROM Manager to get into recovery while "on-the-go". At first, I was honestly afraid that maybe my phone came without the recovery installed!
I know it gets frustrating listening to the stupid T-Mobile jingle taunting you every time it fails.
I guess it's not a big enough deal to me to send it back now that I have a couple of options, but it seems like it's a more common issue than I thought. Only way to get Samsung to do something is to keep sending them back . . .
Its important to be able to get recovery with the buttons tho. What if your flashing roms or anythimg for that matter and the phone wont boot regularly. Then you cant get into recovery to restore. Called tmobile and Im sending mine back tomorrow for replacement, unless somebody knows another way to get into recovery if you end up in a boot loop???
My friend just got his Vibrant, I went to root it for him and wont go into recovery. Mine works fine,I can get into recovery fine on mine everytime. I told him to return it and swap it out. Getting into recovery is very important if you flash a rom and you run into booting issues.

I really suspect what we're seeing isn't a defect per se, but the result of a suit at t-mo being told that people are using recovery mode for rooting their phones and restoring things like wifi tethering, who responded "then disable recovery mode dammit"...
If you return a Vibrant that won't go into recovery from buttons and actually get a new-in-the-box vibrant in its place, I suspect there's a very high probability that the replacement is the same, and if you get a replacement that WILL enter recovery from buttons I suspect it's likely to be an open box or what-have-you. For the latter, as more Vibrants are returned for not entering recovery, you're more and more likely to end up with a 'like-new' replacement that won't enter recovery either.
Long-term I suspect the solution is going to have to come from us, not t-mobile.

I can not boot into recovery this is also a replacement phone. I installed vibrant7 didn't care for it so did a rom manager recovery back to stock and my phone is stuck on the vibrant start screen. Can anyone help me fix my brick?
it doesn't work on my Vibrant, tried Volume Up/Power,Volume Down/Power, no luck....
Well, after spending almost 11 hours trying to boot into recovery or download, I know for sure that there is something going on with my phone re: hardware locked. The date on my box is 7-16. It is an early Vibrant. But no matter what I do, I cannot get into download or recovery which means my ****ing phone is literally worthless.
I have tried all possible thousands of combination's of buttons, batteries, and cords while booting and nothing happens.
The Vibrant logo shows, then it shows the pink, annoying as hell T-mobile logo, than goes to the Galaxy S logo which loads for a little bit and then just leads me to a black screen. Eventually the 4 buttons on the front of the phone turn on and then nothing else happens. It will just sit like this forever.
I know all I need to do is get a working ROM loaded but it is literally impossible to do so.
Can anyone offer any suggestions? Or are anyone else having the same problem?
I guess the only way I can get a working phone is to get in touch with T-mobile and do a Warranty exchange. That's a damn shame too, because I will be without a working phone for a week.
What about using adb?
adb reboot recovery -or- adb reboot download ?
I had a hw locked vibrant, never tried the adb reboot download, recovery did work.. I added another line on my account last night for somone, who got a vibrant, theirs wasn't hw locked, so I traded 'em ;P
Agree with the above poster I have been stuck on the vibrant screen or dark screen and adb still worked to save me
when i try to use adb, it just tells me that it cant find the device. i'm not able to boot into android OS at all.... screen just hangs. so my computer is never getting a chance to see my phone hence why i cant use adb to reboot it into recovery or download.
I believe your device has to go into recovery mode then check with and devices and if you see a device I THINK it is and reboot download, I am 90% certain

i do believe i have the correct drivers installed. i was able to use adb to run lagfixes before i was having this problem. when i boot my phone, i get a sound from my computer saying that it recognizes a usb device. the two drives in the vibrant show up in My Computer but i cannot access them as windows says they are not accessable at the moment.
at what point will adb be able to recognize my phone when booting? no matter what i do when i try adb shell i get error: device not found
It could be the phone not bring in debugging mode, either because it's been turned off or the os isn't getting far enough to turn it on. I think I've been able to get adb to recognize my phone even while it was booting up (at the white vibrant screen). Maybe you can try adb then?
Same problem here. I probably just have to sell it fast on ebay or something. Hopefully some kind of fix starts by the end of the week. First phone in my smartphone life to brick from a simple Voodoo lag fix. Please XDA gods find a solution.

4- press the vol + , vol - , the power botton together.
5- when the screen gose black release the power botton only.

I just fixed this on my phone. Your phone will go into download mode. Plug the phone in and wait for the battery symbol to fully load. Hold Vol + and _ and PWR until it goes black, then release the PWR button only. It will go into DL mode. Fire up Odin, and flash the "Froyo that does not brick" ROM. It will boot into the i9000 recovery mode and give you an error. Hold the Vol + and - and PWR again and release PWR when the phone goes black. It will go into DL mode again. Now with Odin, flash the factory firmware, making sure to click re-partition this time. After the phone reboots, it will fire right up into the factory ROM.

this is exactly the method i want to try. but unfortunately i cannot get the phone into recovery or download mode. i have tried at least 100 times now with many different combination's of plugging the usb cord in and pressing the volume and power buttons.
two ideas: one, is it possible that i wiped recovery and download mode from my phone on accident? the reason why i ask is that i was super tired and flashing roms and kernels to my phone. i flashed back to my original stock rom and then i flashed the kernel. for some reason, i selected wipe date/cache in Rom Manager before flashing the kernel. i have no idea why i did this. seriously. totally noob move. so im assuming i have a kernel flashed but now there is no ROM installed for the phone to boot into.
two, if above is not the issue, than im going to assume that the phone is not recognizing any button presses while its off, so when i turn it on it just recognizes that the power was pressed and ignores the volume presses, thus not booting the phone into recovery or download.
edit: i should mention again that at no time does adb recognize my device. so i cannot use adb to reboot the phone into the mode i need.
just a comment for the OP - the vibrant isnt worthless, it is something that YOU did to get the phone into its current state. So dont blame the phone for something that it didnt do on its own.

I understand what you mean. I appreciate your criticism of my original post. Let me say that I wrote it while frustrated. But I know that isn't an excuse.
The device is fantastic. I know that I did this to it myself. It's unfortunate.
Anyways, I received a replacement phone. I will be more careful this time.
so i accidentally flashed a us yp-g1 with what looks like the Korean firmware and now my touch screen is inverted and i cant use the vol up and pow to re-flash it, any suggestions?
Download the app terminal emulator from the android market. Open it, type "su" and press enter, then "reboot download" and press enter and you should reboot to download mode and be able to flash back with ODIN.

Edit: now im stuck at the "android system recovery" and i can not use the power button to confirm a selection, on reboot it comes back to the "ASR" screen. any way to get aroud this so i can reflash?
How did you get to recovery? Typing reboot download should have gotten you to download mode, not recovery. Did you try plugging it into your computer and seeing if ODIN recognizes it? Otherwise, you could buy (or make) a "USB download jig", which allows a device to get into download mode. Search Google for it, they are cheap on EBay or if you have the right tools you could make one yourself.
While the USB cable is inserted and Odin is ready:
Long-hold (15+ seconds or so) power and VolDn
That should get you into download mode from which you can flash stock kernel/system
the power button isn't responding, I'm going with a USB jig. Is there anyway someone can point me in the direction of a good stock us rom to flash with Odin?
There's one lying around here somewhere I think... Worst case I've got a rooted stock I can upload somewhere.
I'm kind of surprised long-holding Power for 15 seconds or so doesn't cause a reset - that's a hardware feature!
i got the jig and am able to get to the download screen, i just need to get a hold of a us rom. the ones i have dont seem to want to take.

i got an us rom but after flashing the touch screen is not responding. i still cant get to download mode with pow vol-dn.
Phone charged up overnight, and after half an hour of listening to music, I noticed the battery had fallen to around 30%. I then rebooted the phone, but it did not boot up. Cannot seem to enter any recovery/download mode.
Rooted running the Omega ROM. Haven't done any modifications to it for a good couple of weeks. Any chance of salvation?
maybe the battery gone bad? did u try with other battery?
Maybe, but I forgot to mention i somehow entered emergency recovery mode earlier (once) which would suggest its not? How do you enter that mode?
i've heard of that emergency recovery mode, but never actually seen it or know exactly howto trigger it. try vol up+vol down+home+power
Thanks that worked.
Now in 'emergency dload mode (arm9 mode)'
Where do I go from here?
so hows that recovery looks like? got any menu selection like normal recovery such as wipe data etc? if got, try to wipe data.
Nope not like a recovery mode. All it is is the Samsung logo with the 'emergency dload mode' text...
frankly we all here doesnt know exactly what the purpose of that emergency recovery mode.
try to connect your phone with odin and see its detected. maybe u can flash stock rom from it.
if it doesnt work either, u can try to force the device into normal download mode and flash with odin. first take off the battery, wait for around 5 seconds, hold the three button combination for download mode and while u still hold those three buttons, reinsert the battery. it should go into download mode and u can flash stock rom via odin.
Thanks for help. Will give it a go, and let you know the results....

Managed to get it to the 'downloading' text, where I eventually managed to flash a stock ROM via ODIN, so I'm now unrooted.
Problem still remains where it won't boot up without being plugged into a power source, so taking it back tomorrow. I believe the battery somehow died and may have taken something else down with it...
Hello there, I own a galaxy s3 for quite a while and I remember I rooted the device and flashed the Revolutionary S5 ROM via odin long time ago (I did all this with the help of several youtube videos because I am an ignorant in this matter).
But well the problem started when I was going to make a factory reset to the phone because I lent it to a friend and when I got it back I just wanted to clean it and wipe all the info. I entered to recovery mode (twrp) and by accident I wiped all the phone had including te OS. I noticed it because when I was going to power off the phone in recovery mode it told me that there was no OS.
So now the phone is in a bootloop, because when I try to turn it on I only see the samsung galaxy logo and thats it, the same when I plug the phone to the power it only shows the battery screen.
I also have the problem with the volume up key that doesnt work so I cant access the recovery mode. Only the download mode using the volume down+home+lock button combination but still i cant do anything because of the volume up buttom that doesnt work.
If someone can help me with this problem I would really appreciatte it. Explaining me like a 5 yo.

No I dont, I can enter download mode by pressing the volume down + home+ lock button. But after that I cant do anything else because in download mode it tells me to press volume up to continue and volumen down to cancel. And unfortunately my volume up button doesnt work.
Any ideas?
The jig will put the phone into download mode, no buttons required.
To use the jig, remove battery, insert jig, insert battery.

Sorry to bother you but can you tell in depth how to do that without using the volume up key, because I cant fully access the download mode. I just get stuck in the screen that says press volume up to continue or volume down to cancel.
Solved.
Maybe its not the best way to fix it but I inserted a little blade into the volume buttons and took the button out, I clean it a little bit and inserted it so that the volume up key could function (not fully). So that way I accessed recovery mode and flashed the rom I had using an extsd card where I previously copied the zip of the rom. Now I will flash the stock rom twice and who know from there.
Thanks all for your answers

Ah, ok then that isn't download mode at all.
Looks like you'd be best sending it to a repair shop because at this point you need the buttons working. You could dismantle the phone and short the button pad with a small metallic object but if your skills don't range to that i would advise against it as it is very easy to damage the component when shorting it out manually.
