Is there any way I can reprogram the send button to the search button? It would be really useful considering the call button doesn't really do much in 2.2.

You would have to go into the Key charts and change it. I remember a while back when I had my Samsung Moment and was on SDX that we changed the keys to support MP3 controls when the phone was off and function normally when the phone was on so it is possible. The files are located in /system/usr/ and you can start by checking those out.
Please back up before making changes though...

I have built a kernel, based on hastarin R7.6, which has send/dial key mapped to search. You may want to have a try.
Unfortunately I don't have the perm to post links... It's 6VRCX0X55T on multiupload.

I cannot stand this godforsaken button! On the QWERTY keyboard, next to the FN key, there's a TXT key, and if say i'm typing in AIM or something, i accidentally press that damn key, and it takes me out of whatever i might be doing to my txt messages! SOOOOOOOO annoying!

I don't know how but I know it can be done. I installed a neuROM which allows you to configure all those keyboard hot-keys in the Setup->Buttons page. It must be a reg setting or something. Post here if you find it, because I am probably going back to stock ROM and would like to be able to config those as I can with neuROM.
I would like to change that key to an OK button, just like my P4000 had.

Hey guys does anyone know if there is a possibility to use one of the Volume Rockers as a Camera Button?
The other threads in the Droid forums didn't bring anything up but maybe you know a way?
I don't really like soft keys to use the camera because you will always screw up the pictures.
Also it would be possible to shoot pictures under water with such a key.

yes it works, set the button to none in remapper or the camera can launch while screen off. then you don't have a volume up button, so I use tasker to create a widget to put all the volumes to high.
use last VIGNETTE apk, it use camera button from volume! great!

u mean the app from the market which costs money? sry.. don't want to invest for basic functions :=)))
but.. i'm not quite sure how to configure the camera button.. will play around when i got time.. if anyone has the knowledge and the time to post the procedure for the above tool :=) would be great...

How would anything get done if we all needed blow by blow instructions.
Read the post, install the APK, it's an app not a string of ADB commands.
Scroll down to volume up button, select it, tell it to be a camera button in the drop down, apply. If you don't want the reverse option on the note bar then configure app.
BTW the search button won't configure withthis app.

Very nice instructions my man and just so everyone else knows there is actually an app in the market for this just search defy you'll see it it saves the photos to your sd it works

I found the way how to set it so you can answer the incoming call by pressing the home button instead of sweeping the screen - because it sometimes doesn't respond at all. But is there any way to end the call the same way - instantly by pressing the home button? Could't find it in any settings. Need to be setting in stock firmware, not moded at all.

You can end the call by pressing the power button. Settings>Call>Answering/Ending>"The power key ends call"

I know there is an app that can remap keys, however, I only want those keys remapped while calling.
No one has taken up this challenge? Amazing. Seems like it's not enough of a challenge for the experts here. Otherwise this would be very useful instead of having to look for the power key every time to end calls
I have the sgs2 for a few months, Im very satisfied with this phone, But there is a thing I cannot live with, THE HOME BUTTON, I dont know why? but a I dont like it at all, I prefer non physical buttons, so Ive been proving some apps to avoid it, someones like button savior, swipepad and wave launcher (This one is absolutely great).
I just wanna know: is there a way to remap LONG PRESS "BACK KEY" to go to home?, just like long press menu does to go to search!. I proved BUTTONREMAPPING but it doesnt have the "long press" options. I was searching and now I know that files on /system/usr/keylayout and /system/usr/keychars setup the keys on the phone, indeed /system/usr/keylayout/sec_touchkey.kl shows the default capacitive buttons setup, but I dont have enough knowledge to change "LONG PRESS" options on this keys.

There certainly is way to achieve such a thing but i certainly dont know what the way to do so without replacing launcher and having it doing so or maybe replacing Rom. I qould love to know a way to get it done without having to go through that.

You will have to ask one of the modders to do it for you, try contacting one of the modders who has made "long press to kill process" it will be fairly easy for them.

If you don't mind going custom, then cyanogenmod has this (sort of) in an option in the developer options of their roms.......you long press the back button and it kills the running processes (apps)

Nova launcher has a feature that lets you remap the long-press of the menu button to do among a number of things, one of which is bringing up the multi-task menu. Anyone know how to make this happen without using this launcher. I've tried editing the file in key_layout but it didn't do anything.

I've tried Nova Launcher, and it can be configured for a long-press of the menu key to go to the "default" screen, which is kind of like having a home key, but it doesn't work unless you are on the 1st level screens (for example it doesn't work if you are using an application, this it is not truly a home key). I've never rooted before and am worried about trying it on my brand new S3 and what it means to warranty. Thus was hoping to find a way to get what I want without rooting, but something tells me I won't be able to. Also, I really didn't want to change to a special launcher like Nova yet, I just want a capacitive home key option. I don't like physical click keys plus my home key is harder to reach now with the case that I have. Not sure what to do next. Willing to consider rooting if it the process can be made fairly idiot proof. BTW I'm on Sprint which is not the exact phone as yours.

Rooting is fairly idiot proof on the International SGS3 but you may well have major problems if you are in the wrong forum and flash the wrong firmware for a different model phone like the USA models .

Actually what I think would be a more ideal button arrangement for me would be as follows (since my goal is to have a capacitive home key)
1) short-press Menu button would function exactly the same as the physical Home button
2) long-press Menu button would function as the Menu
3) short-press Back would function as Back
4) long-press Back button would bring up a Search screen (kind of like long-press Menu does presently)
I for one am glad that Samsung kept some buttons (like the menu button), instead of going to the true 100% ICS experience.
Maybe I'll switch completely over to the Sprint Galaxy S3 forum in order to avoid any confusion.
cm10 has implemented the button remap feature. now you can easily change the menu button long press to recent apps in cm10
