[Q] JI5 Compatible Lagfix - Vibrant Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

First I want to thank the devs for their excellent work. This is a great community. I want to inquire about whether or not any of the lag fixes are either currently workable with JI5 based ROMS, or will be. I'd like to specifically like to know about Voodoo. Thanks!

Voodoo is working in JI5 based Bionix 1.5. However - it appears to me to cause issues with the phone's orientation sensor. YMMV.

I tried installing it on the new stock JI5 rom and I soft bricked so... At any rate, I'm currently using Eugene's stock JI5 rom w/Jac support and am OC'd to 1200. I'd like the lagfix to work but, I'll wait, if I haveta.

Just want to bump this for the love.

[Q] When Will We Get 2.2.1 roms?

I was browsing some other site when I noticed some members mentioning how android 2.2.1 on their galaxy s devices made a HUGE improvement in overall speed, basically making it stock lag free. They had the original i9000 galaxy.
The story was, when google released android 2.2, their main goal was efficiency and speed overall but mainly for the snapdragon processor devices especially since their own device(nexus 1) + many others at the time, evo, incredible, etc. were snapdragon powered. Thus, people noticed the increase in speeds and also their benchmarks increased dramatically as well. The downside was, those optimizations kind of slowed down our hummingbird devices in some ways resulting in the lag we know of. Thats why some people feel(including myself) stock 2.1 was pretty slick in basic functions.
But since the 2.2.1 was leaked, people installed them on the international galaxy s devices, and even some ports were made for the samsung Captivate. All of those devices with the updates are much faster. I tried to find people having 2.2.1 on the Vibrant, but no know has so thus far. So does anyone know of any developments on 2.2.1 for or vibrants, or atleast somehow we can try to have it ported. I mean if they got it working from the i9000 to captivate, im sure vibrant should not be that much more different..
Just install voodoo lag fix. Will speed up your vibrant and be mostly lag free. Why wait for all that. I'm using odex uvjl4 froyo stock rom with voodoo. Runs awesome.

Because whichever way you look at the RFS, it is still FAT based filesystem, inefficient and ancient, Voodoo converts that to a proper linux based filesystem that should've been on the phone from the get go.
Voodoo lag fix is the ultimate solution to the lag problem. 2.2.1. in combination with voodoo would make our devices that much better with increased cpu and file system performance over 2.2.
2.2.1 was ported to the Vibrant already. Heathen got everything working and it was amazing EXCEPT for a major bug. The phone would restart every time it picked up too much network strength signal (service bars). They tried fixing it for weeks but ultimately no one was able to fix this bug which is hiding somewhere in the radio of the Vibrant apparently. Ultimately 2.2.1 was dropped and development for it is now halted.
I believe there is some development for 2.3 (Gingerbread) from both TW, CM, and maybe Heathen as well but it appears it is still a bit too early to have daily-driver ROMs.
I hope this explains the situation.
Voodoo brought my vibrant a 1000 points higher on quadrant benchmark, everything is so much better, stop being a little biznatch xriderx66

The OP is asking for like updates that improve speed and everyone goes VOODOOO!
I understand, I use voodoo too, and to the other guy explaining to me about RFS, I know that already lol.
Thanks for the advice, but actually i already have voodoo running. Its just that I was interested in finding a more stable option, especially something that did not require having an additonal install. BTW how come people are getting such great benchmark numbers with their voodoo vibrants. I was getting close to 1400 and just did a complete wipe and reinstall and now im getting about about 1000. Regardless of the numbers, the phone seems to be flying though, regardless of the bogus numbers..

make sure your /system, /data, /dbdata and /cache are ext4, you can check with adb shell or terminal emulator app via "mount" command.

[Q] t-mobile froyo

Just curious if anyone has downloaded and is currently using the t-mobile froyo that was released today and can give us the run down compared to what we have.
Its a bit laggy the gps doesnt work, it worst than the eclair gps. Good things aboit it is it has wifi-calling and tmobile tv if u want it my quadrant run was 880s when I was running 1500s with a rom. The roms are better I personaly liked auxura or nero v5
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
I hope the devs can pick it apart and take out the good stuff and put it in another rom
i dont use any update and software from samsung anymore
they only disappoint me
I installed the t mobile release on my wifes phone, and it's laggy, slow, and full of the traditional bloatware. The only upside was that the gps actually works.go with nero 5 with voodoo. Or wait for rhew next nero, which should be soon.

I'll Pass
I've been trying to update to 2.2.
After reading this thread, I'll Pass.
Thanks all.

[Q]How to update Firmware to 2.3 from 2.2?

Hello,
I have Vibrant firmware 2.2 T959UVKB5 Froyo Trigger Version 3.0.1 i need to upgrade to firmware 2.3, how can i do it? Sorry i'm newbie from android OS.
Thank for help
let me get this straight? ur on trigger 3.0.1 and u wanna know how to upgrade to 2.3.3 gingerbread? Well gingerbread hasnt been officially leaked for the vibrant yet. I mean u can download 2.3.3 roms that are ported from i900 gingerbread.

those are both 2.3.3 roms i hope that helps.
The gingerbread Roms are VERY buggy. And not worth upgrading until all the bugs are worked out. I would stick with Trigger Rom until then. I am also using the Trigger Rom and also the Overstock kernel. Just my 2 cents throught. Good luck!

Gingerbread roms are not "VERY buggy", not anymore anyway. With the exception of GPS almost everything is working like a charm. Surely battery might be an issue to some but even that have a fix or two now.
One thing though, these roms are anti-noobish, so make sure you read A LOT before flashing one. That's probably why many choose to stay away from them.

I agree, it's very fast, responsive, and I've never had much trouble with 2.3.3 ROMs. I use Simply Galaxy RC3.2, and except for bricking my phone the first time I tried installing (ODIN'd back to stock, flashed trigger, flashed SG RC3.2), it's been working really well.
I calibrated my battery after installing which helped clear battery issues, Quadrant scores in 2200s, fast internet.
There are a few more issues than just GPS..
3D performances are not what they should be (fixed from what it used to be, but still can be laggy)
Battery can drain pretty quick if you aren't careful about what you leave running.
Headset jack auto-detect (must toggle headset jack to be active over the loudspeaker using a widget). Apparently there is a fix for this but it has not yet been successfully implemented into any kernel that is publicly available and no developer has looked at the fix which was posted.
On topic though, make sure you read the instructions and understand them before you try flashing a 2.3.3 ROM. If you have any questions about specific instructions for a ROM post it into the ROM development forum. Also know how to and be comfortable with going into download mode and using ODIN to flash to stock from the Vibrant splash screen or from Bootloop (vibrant splash screen to an attempt to boot OS and then a reboot and repeat indefinitely).
If you are uncomfortable with any instructions for the ROM installation even after clarification or are uncomfortable with the potential for bricking and cannot use ODIN or don't want to risk anything DO NOT FLASH A 2.3.3 ROM!
Happy flashing, I hope this helped.

[Q] Back to Stock?

No flaming, please. I have been rooted since getting the Fascinate, used all the SC iterations, now the CommROM variations. Few nuisances, mainly email doesn't work properly, don't like the SMS colors, BlueTooth not working, etc. As a result, am considering going to stock - Odin back to DI01 and let the OTAs occur, then not reroot or install custom ROM. My question is, in the opinion of the readers of this thread, what are the principal limitations of stock vs custom ROM? what are the biggest disadvantages of not being rooted? it seems like I should be able to answer this for myself, but other perspectives can be helpful. Thanx!

Biggest disadvantage of not being rooted is not being able to use TitaniumBackup IMO. You also loose the ability to remove bloatware that you'll never use, but other than that, I don't see any major downfalls. However, not running a custom ROM really limits you as far as themes are concerned. I hope you like the default TouchWiz UI cause that is all you'll have.
the stock kernels are pretty bleh too in terms of battery life and performance...you loose all the features that the roms build in, the ability to use themes
to each their own...but if i wanted a stock phone id get an iphone
being stuck with bing sucks! and so does all that other bloatware.
you can odin back to DL09 and OTA up as well, you don't have to go all the way to DI01. I just went through this process to get to ED03 last night, and the first thing I did was root it so that I could turn off Bing.
another thing is if you are interested in themes and modifying how the interface looks, custom is the way to go.
one minor annoyance being stock is the full battery popup. I think in general, being rooted or custom rom'd allows you to live without all the minor things that bug you. all the functionality is there if you stay stock, but you have to deal with things you don't like.
the only advantage i feel that you get with staying stock is that you can get the OTAs without needing to Odin back to stock first. I haven't gone to comrom 1.3 yet, but when I was on sc2.9.2, everything was pretty awesome.
Thanks to all for the helpful replies. Follow up question - while I think that the CommROM is the best custom ROM put out to date (full disclosure, haven't used them all), it seems less "stable" than SC 2.9.2. More nuisances. Anyone agree?

No.
I have more features, same great battery, and same mostly non-functional GPS (don't use it anyways).
To me, its been a step up from SC overall, especially since I greatly prefer its darker theme.
btw, I have a stickied thread in this forum with links/files/directions to get to stock and then to anything else.
When I went back to stock for a couple of days the lagginess drove me nuts.
Another thing I would miss is the grouped widgets and the shutdown menu. Did I mention I would miss the 7 different lock screens.

in my case i only root to remove the bloatware and bing sh!t, make it look as clean as possible, i don't go crazy with customization or anything.
i tried to stay stock but all that verizon crap just drove me nuts, can't stand it.

If you preferred sc to comm rom it sounds like you should temporarily revert to cwm 2.5 and flash the debloated & de-binged ed01 rom that adrynalyne packaged up last month (right after ed01 was released).
Add launcher pro, sbrissen's latest tsm set, imnuts' voodoo kernel (and whatever other mods you fancy) - you'll be way ahead of stock.

[Answered] Need to disable Voodoo & use Odin to flash Simply Honey 5.1?

I'm trying to update my wife's phone to Simply Honey 5.1 coming from Sipmly Galaxy 2.8. Both ROMs use kernels by cmenard, and both kernels include Voodoo.
I have 2 questions about the installation:
1. The Simply Honey install instructions specifically say to use Odin. Is this necessary? I've never used Odin before and I've flashed my own Vibrant about a dozen times without a problem.
2. Since the ROM my wife is coming from has Voodoo enabled, and since Simply Honey 5.1 has Voodoo in the kernel, do I need to disable Voodoo before flashing? I thought that you only need to disable Voodoo if the kernel you're flashing doesn't support it -- is this inaccurate? Or is there some other reason to disable Voodoo before flashing?
Thanks for reading, and thanks in advance for any replies.
The more important question is: Does your wife like having her phone tinkered with?
The Gingerbread ROMs are coming along, but they're not quite stable yet. You might want to stick with Froyo unless your wife is a fan of tinkering and using workarounds for GPS and battery life issues.
As for your questions:
1) When in doubt, follow the creators install instructions to a "T".
2) I've seen quite a few ROMs recommend disabling Voodoo before flashing them, but never seen one say that disabling Voodoo would be harmful to flashing them. So I'd disable it just in case.
You're also going to need to switch to the Gingerbread bootloader if you're going to stick with an i9000 leaked Gingerbread ROM. Messing with the bootloader is the only way I know of to completely kill your phone if you mess it up. Fair warning!
If you want Gingerbread without having to mess with bootloaders, I suggest MIUI or CM7. CM7 just went stable, and I've had no major issues with MIUI since SS-12 Revamped came out. MIUI has the most robust theming system I've seen in a ROM, so your wife may enjoy it. Just be ready to have her phone covered in Pink with fluffy icons and whatnot when she's done with it

Wow, thanks. You answered questions I didn't even know I had!
My wife wants a phone that "just works", but she wanted the speed and customizability of a custom ROM (her whole phone is already themed purple, haha), so I guess I'll go shopping for another Froyo ROM (or try to wipe and reinstall her current ROM to try to fix the crashes and accelerometer problems she's been having.)
Thanks again, I appreciate it.
A nice stable froyo ROM you can try is called toxic 8..since she likes themes, they have a bunch of them and the developer has added a lot of nice touches that are gingerlike
Again, if she likes theming and doesn't much use the GPS (it works, but requires an extra step or two), MIUI is unique and has the most robust theming of any Vibrant ROM.
I used to be a die hard fan of Simple Honey Roms, but they all became too unstable or had various issues, and caused me alot of problems and aggravation!! So far the only ROM that's been a super performer is team Toxic's Crazy 8 Froyo mixed with GB Rom, that works 100% with every option and with blazing speed and performance, Its your choice, but if you want to avoid the music from your wife when SH starts to hose up, Id stay away from it, especially 5.0 and double especially 5.1 but then again maybe your a gluten for punishment and NO MORE lovin from the wife, until things are right again. LOL Good luck JMHO based on experience with all the SH Rom's BTW I appreciates EB's work, but it still needs time to evolve, eventually there gonna be great ROM's.
