I was wondering if someone could help me out. I can't use Odin because I'm a Mac user. I would like to have a stock kernel on hand just in case. Thanks in advance.

I don't think kernels can be flashed thru nandroid. Would be nice tho.
Nevermind, I misunderstood.
I use paralles(spelling) on my mac. Boot up xp and choose which machine to use the phone.. Download either the pda net drivers or download the samsung drivers..then fire up odin..

Oops, sorry, didn't see that you have no odin.

It's unsigned, but that shouldn't be a problem for Clockwork.

What do you mean by unsigned? I'm kind of a noob when it comes to kernels.

Same as any update.zip, the signature is required for the recovery to allow you to install it. You can disable that in Clockwork. If it causes a problem, let me know and I'll set up the signature stuff. I just haven't configured that bit on this computer.
Eugene373 has several threads with a link to download the stock kernel. Here is one http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=784142
here is a thread that looks like its the stock kernel, but i dont think its a zip.
I am actually looking for the same; a stock kernel that can be flashed though clockwork.
for the posters that said kernels cant be flashed through clockwork, Im pretty sure they can as Jac's OC/UV kernel was flashed though recovery

So I'm really new to custom ROMs and recoveries, and I have a few questions. I already flashed ClockworkMod, but if I want to get rid of it, is deleting the update.zip all I have to do? And if I were to make a backup and then flash a custom ROM, but decided to go back to my recovery, it would be exactly like it was before flashing the custom ROM, correct? I think that's about it, thanks for taking the time to read and answer.
First flash the correct kernel (2.1 or 2.2 ) of the one used for your backup. Then restore. Then delete update.zip
After that it will be how you had it

I think in this case doing you would also need to reset the phone and do a cache wipe as well then reboot and it would see as stock
So how would I get my hands on the stock kernel and flash it?

I think that recovery is from Eugene's dead horse kernel. You can post it in dead horse thread. BTW you have to put the rom on external sd to flash with that kernel.
Thanks man.will try that.

Download SGS Kernel flasher from the market. Also, download whatever kernel you want to flash and just select it thru the app I just mentioned.

Don't worry mate. Just download odin and stock jfd rom and you will be back up and running in 10 minutes.
Check out this thread..
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=954509
Why not do this? The OP wanted to change kernels without a computer. The kernel flasher does just that.
Besides, Odin should be baseline knowledge if you are going to play around with the Vibrant.
P.S.- I forgot to quote Duboi
Thanks all, I odin back to stock.all is well.

I have stock 2.2. Can I flash a rom to it and how?
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
You can do a couple of things...to have it work with 2.2.
-Odin a Voodoo integrated kernel
-Odin CWM(not sure about this)
OR
-Odin Back to stock JFD--then flash CWM via Rom Manager
You have to Odin whichever way I guess.

i had the same problem yesterday...i was on stock 2.2 and after rooting i couldn't get into green recovery...so if it's the same case flash back with odin on 2.1,get rooted and flash the custom rom you want.
do u know step by step using odin to do this
Just go to the developement section of this forum and click on the tab that says "stickies".....every thing you need to know is right there. please, some research on your end will go a long ways

Can anyone do the Amon RA for Vibrant??? My bro have the evo 4g and he told me is better than Tom manager...
its a great recovery, but rom manager does everything we need, and does it well.
hit up amon on twitter, but I doubt he will do it.....
What's wrong with Clockwork?
It's because I don't know how to delete a kernel with the clockworkmod and mybro told me he can do it with amonra... you know how to do it without use Odin to revert to stock the phone???

+1,
just flash a new kernel on top using SGS kernel flasher, its super easy.
Also, SGS Kernel Flasher can do a backup of current kernel, in case you want to go back after flashing a new one!
Amon_Ra is great (my N1) but CWMR is an awesome recovery...no need to go trying to fix what isn't broken.
I know that, I just want to delete it without flash another one...

That's what you're supposed to do...or use sgs kernel flasher and backup the current before you flash...
you're confused man...what rom are you on?
Recovery is part of the kernel from what I remember. There isn't a seperate partition for it. Delete kernel u delete recovery. CWMR boots off SD if I'm not mistaken. I forget these things after 2days of parties XP

I'm using Ubuntu and have the stock 2.2.1 firmware on my phone.
Have tried to run superoneclick with mono but cant even get that running.
Thanks in advance

Of course. Have a look at the dev section and specifically the rooting/flashing/modding STICKY post at the top!

thanks, this is were i first looked. it all seems to be for windows. will look again
So I tried and tried and tried again to get superoneclick to recognise my phone last night and failed. It hung after starting ADB connection. Would not continue no matter what I tried. Anyone encountered this problem or even tried superoneclick using Ubuntu?
I have looked for a script to run to achieve root but can't find one, as I can use ADB manually. Very frustrating.
Can't even update firmware with Sammy software cos it needs windows

i am looking at heimdall although it is not supported and nobody seems to have tried it. atleast not from my quick searching. ill continue to look.
so if i cant root 2.2.1 with linux then i should look at updating firmware to 2.3 and then i can root with standard recovery and a zip update?
