Hi all,
I have been lurking around the forums for a while and I have gone from being totally oblivious to at least feeling as though I am somewhat android-literate now, although I still have a lot to learn. I finally took the plunge and rooted my phone last week without a hitch by using the guide here. Now I'm ready to tinker.
I'm currently running on the stock Vibrant updates...the last thing I did was the OTA GPS fix that came out maybe a month or two ago (which has worked great for me btw, no more issues with GPS). I'm trying to pick a new ROM, but I'm not familiar enough with them to pick one.
My wishlist:
-I'd like to move up to a 2.2 build
-go to a more vanilla Android (not TouchWiz)
-I'd prefer speed and stability over snazzy theming or custom animations
-I'd love to get rid of the long time to startup, and the annoying sound that goes with startup/shutdown
-At this point I'm not looking to overclock (one step at a time )
-I do like my Swype keyboard, and would like to keep it
-I plan to start using my phone in place of my iPod, so music friendliness would be a plus.
I'm not sure what other info would help narrow this down, but any suggestions? I'm loving the idea that my awesome phone could be even better.
Sounds like Eugene R2 with Swype added back (it doesn't come with it).
His io kernel helps. You would really benefit from voodoo though.
Thanks for the response. I'll give that a try. I may have to read up on voodoo because I have no idea what that is, but I think I'm fairly comfortable with how to put in a new ROM or kernel.
Thanks for your help! Any other suggestions (or just agreement with the first one) would be welcome.
Yeah, curious if others have another suggestion. Nero with voodoo us gold for me.
Here is voodoo:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=870480
Nero has it though, you just need to enable it (he has really good instructions In the nero v3 thread). Always remember to disable before you flash anything else though, or you'll have to use odin to get back to stock (my warning, seriously, worth it though)
Ext4 makes the Vibrant a new phone.
I would second that opinion on Eugenes GingerBread Clone R2 . Ive been running it and I cant say anything bad about it . IO kernel has great battery life as for swype I just pulled it from NeroV3 . If you want you can go to Q&A section and I have directions and the files need to get swype running . The title is "WHERE DO I GET SWYPE FOR EUGENES GINGERBREAD CLONE?" .
I really appreciate the help guys. I'm going to give the GingerBread Clone a run here in the next hour or so and see how it goes.
Any last advice for a first time ROM-flasher?
Make sure you are not hardware locked before you do anything .

I just wanted to thank everybody again. I kind of fell off using forums for a while, but I thought it was worth coming back to give an update. I flashed the Gingerbread Clone ROM that night and have been using it since.
I love it! My battery lasts between 30-35 hours per charge most of the time as long as I'm not gaming on it. There was a little bit of an adjustment period for a couple things, but I'm definitely happy with it. No pulldown settings toggles was a change, and the non-Swype keyboard was too. I'd say I actually prefer the new keyboard because of the good autocomplete options within just a couple letters, and I never went back to Swype.
I don't know if I could even quantify all of the little differences, but overall it seems to be snappier with better battery life. Can't complain about that! Thanks to everybody who offered suggestions.
I said 30-35 hours, but I just looked at my phone and saw I'm currently at 2 days and 6.5 hours since my last charge. Haven't used my phone a ton the last couple days, so that gives an idea of how intense the battery life has been. I'm at 54 hours and I still have another couple left if the battery indicator is to be believed.
Hey guys, I'm new to the forum and this is my first post. I've been lurking around for the past 2 months learning everything I can about android and the Atrix. Prior to this, I've never given much thought about smartphones.
I passed up the iphone 4 in janurary cause it was too late into it's life cycle so I've decided to go with Android. I want a phone that will last till the end of my contract (3 years). The Atrix caught my eye with its Tegra 2 duel core (Big Nvidia fan) which I naturally thought would be a perfect candidate.
I was really set on buying this phone up until today when My dad visited a Bell store. It turns out that particular store didn't even get one sale. It's in a decent location too (Missisauga, beside Toronto).
My guess is that if the phone is not selling then Motorola probably won't support it for long. And with the locked bootloader, I'd be safer getting an Iphone which will probably get more updates that this for sure. I don't know if I can last 3 years with the locked bootloader and Moto's lack of updates. Probly a big gamble to whether it'll get 2.4. It's a real shame considering this phone is a major leap over all the other ones out right now.
What do you think guys? Asking this in a Atrix forum probably isn't the best idea but I'm sure some of you went through this too before you shelled out all that cash.
Keep in mind I live in Canada and only have access to a limited amount of high end phones. If I decide not to get this, then it's the Iphone 5 or galaxy s2 for me.
It's a flagship phone, of course it'll get updated...

Hardware wise its an amazing phone. Software wise it blows. Well, that is until you root it, and freeze the bloat and install a different launcher. After that then its super snappy and tears through tegra games and movies. However if you like to tinker with roms and such then I can't recommend it. It's the reason why mine is going back in exactly 8 days. No dev support for it due to it having a locked boot loader and its gonna be crickets in this forum soon. Locked boot loader means that if moto decides not to upgrade the Atrix soon or at all then you have no way of updating it yourself. So thats the reason mine is going back. Remember if you could care less about custom roms and could care less about being stuck on 2.2 for who knows how long then yes you will probably like the Atrix. I'm moving on to more "open" waters.

Sure, we'll get 2.3 maybe even 2.4, but what about a third one...? I doubt it.
2.4 is coming out in a few month and that'll be barely into the 3 year's of death I have to sign.
Hows it selling in the U.S? Does anyone know?

Get the Canadian Atrix.
Bought it, LOVED it. Had to unlock it, it worked and now I'm using it on FIDO.
All this stuff about the bloat, I will say I've had the phone since the 17th of march, and have played with it these last 4 days and I tried all launchers major launchers, all this talk of "bloat" rang very untrue to me, at least with the Bell version of the phone..
The smoothest one yet is the stock one. LauncherPro was great but the moment you turn on a Live Wallpaper that thing lags up like nothing else.
Buy it. You will not regret it. ESP the battery life. 4 days and counting, only have charged it 2 times with HEAVY heavy usage. Very good stuff.
The reason why it lagged so bad is because you're supposed to freeze blur from running in the background while you run another launcher at the same time. But Im sure you already knew that.. I agree with battery life though. Its great but thats still part of my hardware argument.

Honestly, even after having frozen stuff.. Motoblur home is still the smoothest when using a live wallpaper.
Having said that, do you really want a live wallpaper? (maybe yes, maybe no..) either way. All this talk about bloat, makes a TINY impact on performance. This phone is a beast, and it handles like so.
The HDMI/Webtop features are ridiculous. Very nice.
Ok today Verizon call me and asked if I would like to renew my plan and replace my phone with new every 2 years.
Now I really really like my Eris. It's size is wonderful the speed is not great from all the development from XDA developers and thank you all for the support over the years.
Yes the phone could use more ram but adding sd cards and tweaking this done the job for me.
So the question is should I be looking to to an LTE4 phone before it is a limited data plan right now I tether my phone to my computer when on the road and I use the GPS so much with google maps.
The TB looks like a great phone however I hear the battery life stinks and duel cores are the next big thing.
What would you do?
There's always going to be a newer, faster, more of this or that coming out soon.
I would wait it out. If your Eris does everything you need then why bother to change into a new plan now?

I haven't seen the battery life on the TB yet, but the argument of not getting it and instead waiting for a dual core phone is crap. I've seen the speed of the TB on stock and it's amazingly fast, I don't see a dual core processor giving you any advantage over the single core in the TB.
I agree with sir_eagle. If you always wait for the next big thing, when Do you stop waiting? The thunderbolt looks pretty awesome. That's what I am wanting right now. I can't see the battery life being any worse than what the Eris was a couple of years ago. That's just my $. 02.

After looking at the map at network4g.verizonwireless. com I see where I live at is covered with 4g but my work only has 3g.
I do agree with everyone the TB will most likely get better with time, as for waiting one side of me says wait for a smaller phone because I like the size of what I have but the other says go for it... Coverage will come with time and the phone specs are great.
idk maybe I need to sleep on it more.
Thanks everyone for the different views

Could be the right price
The 149.99 I got the TB for was the right price, I don't know if verizon is still running whatever that was, but it was the major factor for me along with the desire to have a 4g phone before the move to tiered data
yeah but the incredible will still be supported, will get gingerbread officially and is still a pretty kick a*s phone even though it is a year old and EOL.
i really don't want to give up my incredible ever. it really is the perfect phone for me.
I actually still love/have my eris as well. I am rocking gsb and I use it as an mp3 player and to stream audiogalaxy over wifi while at work.
EOL is the way to go. Then I have no hesitation getting a XDA upgrade.
Sent from my ERIS GSBv2.1 using XDA Premium App
I really wanted the TB, but now with running GSB on my little Eris it is totally revived and does what I need it to do.
Sure it is not an Inc or TB in regards to specs, but atm I'm quite happy.
Also hesitant to sign up for another 2 year contract, so for my next phone I might go the e-bay route as well should my Eris die.
4G is not in my area yet and won't be till at least next year, so no need for a 4G phone yet.
I'm in the same boat. I'd love to get the latest and greatest, but my Eris is running pretty well on GSB 2.8. I fear the TB might be a little big, and I'm worried about these rumors of unrootable HTC devices. If the Incredible 2 is unrootable, I guess I can look into the LG Revolution, or fall back on the TB, which may prove to be the last great dev phone on Verizon.
Or... if the gloomy predictions about Android becoming more closed end up being all true, I'll get the iPhone 5 and sit this generation of Android out until they pull their heads outta their asses. Maybe I'll wait for a device that runs Jellybean.
I have 2 family share lines w. nice discounts, both eligible for upgrade - with the last of NE2 and the disappearing annual/VIP upgrades - line 2 to be out of contract in 3 months/line 1 out in 10 months. Going to wait & I'm holding it out and might just ditch CDMA handsets and join the fun with GSM - more rooted device to pick & choose. VZW has NOT been consumer friendly, doing away with 1 year subsidized pricing plan as of 4/17 - yes, next week (in case, anyone missed the leaked news now plastered all over CNN, et. al.) Not sure if I wanted to renew another 24 months with them (been w. big Red since the mid 90's although I have backup lines with other carriers) - tired of their high ETF and capped unlimited data pricing, etc.
Was @ local Target/VZW kiosk looking at the TB along with Moto's & LG/Samsung's - while glancing at AT&T's sibling offerings and prices. TB is nice with a big screen, but I asked myself do I really want to hang a "brick" in a pouch on the belt and deal with an oversized battery (or, keep a spare ones with me at all times?) Prices will drop sooner & faster than the remaining lifespan on the contract while resale/trade-in values will fade even faster with the dual core's releases.
EOL or not, I picked up my ebayed Eris for under $100 (excellent condition 9 - 9.5 out of 10) including 2 SD cards & batch of accessories after researching. This is ideal for my use and still undecided between 3 or 4 top ROM's - Froyshedyo, XtrRom, XTRSense & GSB 2.8 - having fun & getting acceptable battery life, enough to last a full 15 to 18 hours extended work day if necessary. Sure, I could use a bigger screen (eyesights not what it used to be as one aged, LOL) but this was a step up from the HTC Ozone/Q series' 2.4" screens. Faster CPU's, more memories & bigger SD card will always be in the race for us to catch - depending on one's priorities & preferences - might as well go the extra yard & get a tablet ?? with a 7" screen so that I can really see FB, YT and use Navigation ....
This "little" nicely sized Eris is as good as we can root it - why mess with it as between DW and I, we CAN make the best use of it in the coming year with continued XDA development & support here, thanks to all.
Tomorrow i'm picking up my Rezound after school, and I have to say I'm stoked!
I've been doing hours of in-depth researching of every aspect of this device and the results are just overall great!
What are your opinions on the Rezound? First post by the way! lol. I'm really excited to get more involved with XDA, any positive feedback or anything would be awesome.
I had to register just so I could reply to this thread
I have had my rezound for five days now, upgraded from a Nexus 1 (Completely stock for 2 years!!! oops ). After about 15 minutes of excitement, I realized it was the same GB I had been using for the last 18+ months. Luckily for me, I had been ghosting this and other forums and had been researching ROM's and ICS for about 2 weeks before I got my phone, so I promptly unlocked, rooted, and flashed Scrosler's ICS 2.3. Best decision I've ever made. Only problem I have noticed is the slight blue flicker (VERY rare, and extremely insignificant.) I LOVE this phone! I even spent all day Monday (and I mean ALL day, I had some major frustrations) trying to flash a new boot animation! I realized Sunday I probably should have tested my Romming skills on my now legacy N1 so I decided to unlock, root, and ROM that too .
To summarize, I just want to thank all the developers, and members who dedicate so much time and effort to make life on our android devices so Fracking AWESOME!
That is great news, thank you for replying! I was doing the same thing! Anyways, I'm really happy about this. I am so thankful for XDA and everyone who Devs and helps in there own way here for all devices. Hopefully, when I gain some experience I will try to dev for the Rezound or some other device! for now I will research and test things by myself! thank you!
Welcome to XDA! Congrats on getting what I, and many others think is the best phone available right now. Most of the people, as you know if you've been reading the threads, are happy to help you out if you need it. Great people here at XDA!
The rezound's my first HTC phone and I LOVE it! My only real complaint is that my stock battery life is terrible but I'm going to pick up a extended battery in a few days anyway. Came from the nexus s to this and I have to say the devs for both devices are incredible for the work that they put into these phones.

Battery doesn't suck. You just don't understand how to get better battery life...many of us are getting 24+ hours on the stock battery.

With CleanROM GBE 1.6.5 and the right settings you can easily get 16 to 24 hours with fairly heavy use. Really very reasonable. Of course you won't get this while it's stock. Or until the new wears off ;-)
I'll be getting picking it up in a few hours, when I do I will purchase the XDA Premium app Can't wait to see what roms are in store for me

I agree, the battery life sucks on the stock battery. The extended battery is awesome IMHO, I have 3 of them.
I stream audio all day at work (either iheart radio or sirius online). The stock battery dies after 4/5 hours doing that, but the 2750 will last all day.
I did root/ROM etc, but I never turn off GPS/DATA etc just to get slightly better battery life. I have 3 email accounts on push etc.
I was one of the ones that was waiting for the Bionic since spring of last year.
I got frustrated around September and picked up a Thunderbolt off craiglist.
That was my first HTC phone.
Since I didn't have any warranty to void I rooted and never looked back.
I was a ROM flashing addict.
When the Galaxy nexus was announced I saw my dream phone, but again the wait was on.
I liked the Rezound but thought I wanted something different.
When the Nexus finaaly came the radio issues scared me off because I was always missing the radio quality of my Droid X and I couldn't see taking any steps backward.
I got the Rezound and realized that this was the phone for me. And since I had procrastinated waiting for the Galaxy Nexus I was able to get it after the $100 price drop.
Obviously Samsung's new device(GS3) will change smartphones for sure. Once it releases, how many people here are switching to it once they have an available update?
I have until about March to make my decision. Im on Verizon and dont plan on changing, so i plan on choosing the 32gb model for only $50 more than the 16(worth it in my opinion because i can double that amount thanks to HTC leaving us a wonderful 32gb card w/ tbolt)
Most of the specs impress me, although im kind of wishing that a couple new 'top of the line' 4.0 devices release, just to give me more options, because honestly the S3 is the only phone on verizon(will be on verizon) that truely impresses me (Galaxy Nexus= no micro sd which puts 32gb card to no use, and cameras significantly better on S3).
Well, let me know! How many people plan on making the switch? Also, why or why not??

i will be also. my upgrade is in august and i cant wait. im sure since i am not preordering i wont even be able to get one for months but oh well. it was either this or the nexus one which id much rather have the gs3 any day... im excited just hopefull theyll have some in stock
I know it's too late, but this info might help others down the road. I got 2 T-Bolts the day they came out last March and my upgrade date on both was something like November 12th. I spoke to 3 different reps at various points and told them all I am a long time Verizon customer and do not want to lose my unlimited data. I want my upgrade dates moved up so I can get 2 GSIII's now and keep my data and all 3 were fine with moving my upgrade date up--no checking with a supervisor or anything.
I know a lot can depend on who you get, but sometimes if you just call and ask you may be surprised.
Hope this works for someone moving forward.
they definately did not help me. they wouldnt push up my upgrade date from august 8 to now. sucks you would think after being a verizon customer for 12 years they may try to help you out a little bit more. it just makes you not want to give them your money at all but damn i wanna get rid of my bolt finally and get a gs3 for something new. the only reason i truly rooted my thunderbolt was to get better battery life and some customization of course.... damn i want a new phone
I advise anyone considering a GS3 from Verizon,
That you should think about and thank Verizon for the only GS3 with a locked bootloader....

Haha, yeah no real big surprise I suppose, though it was the first Samsung device I can think of to get such "special" treatment.
Despite Verizons' efforts to lock it down, it only took devs a day to achieve Root and recovery for it.
So I don't suppose that should stand in anyone's way of their decision now.
Update: still have 6 months with this thing, but i was able to preorder a nexus 7! Hopefully that keeps me occupied. Latest android software, pure google, quad core... I think i can last 6 more months

It'll get bypassed in no time. I wouldn't worry about it. So far the only thing this Tbolt has going for it is the camera and music software. SRS with Sony Xtreme Bass Ear buds sounds pretty awesome. That aside this is my second Tbolt in 6 days. My first one did a reboot on Saturday as I left Verizon so I figured it was just a fluke or update. The second time was when I was on my way home from college. Then Tuesday it boot looped then just sat at the HTC boot logo.
Yesterday I bought the GS3 (full retail, ouch!), and honestly I don't think it's that great. Yes it looks great, and the display is awesome, but I got so used to the awesome battery life of the TB with the extended battery, that I took it for granted. I barely used my phone today and I got down to 15% after a full day, whereas my TB would have been around 60-75% remaining. I also noticed that because it's so thin and slick, it's difficult to easily hold without it slipping.
I'm actually leaning towards returning the GS3 and going back to the TB.
