[q] best 2.2 rom! - Hero, G2 Touch Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Which 2.2 ROM do you think has the BEST capability to handle the requirements from the HTC Hero?
EDIT: if i missed a/your ROM i'm really sorry!! i can add it if you like, thanks!

the CM6 nightlies are missing.

I am currently testing floyo 1.01 as it is newer (and so more up to date including, finally, a French Canada QWERTY keyboard!) than froyd 1.5 (my last ROM). Also it comes with less crap built-in (not hard to remove, but still). However I think that froyd's policy of switching to the conservative governor while screen is off is a better idea for long battery life. Too bad we need an extra application to handle that (CPUspeed).
I also like the fact that the gallery 3D doesn't rotate. It didn't work anyways.
But what made me change is that I had random reboots when I used my phone with Froyd 1.5.
CM6 for the win anyways. Most (all?) of these roms are based on CM6 so they don't differ much.

Hey dont forget to add cronos froyo, great rom and responsive developer, im sure a good number of us still try out his roms
Id suggest trying out the last three plus cronos froyo, until froydvillain comes out with their updated version since the current one is a bit out of date

You should definately add the nightly builds as an option, i've been running one of the builds for..dunno coming up to a week i think, and its so smooth, consistently, no lag what so ever, and fast, and stable

also to add to the problem, i tried the bluetooth, i cant receive files but i can send files to others..
ooops wrong thread sorry..

yeah its been awhile... i forgot about Crono's ROM, going to flash it right now and compare it with Floyo.
took the advice that FroydVillain may be a bit older relatively and it seemed like the FusionROM wasnt so stable. might try elelinux after crono's but i doubt it... still need to see which one could possibly run Adobe AIR!

First any ROM with flykernel-11 (including Floyo 1.0+) will by default use smartass will automatically cap the speed when sleeping to 352. So actually that is much better for battery life when idle and it does not require any app.
Regarding floyd's policies, I am actually not aware of such an option. It's definitively not in the kernel, so if it does exist it's an option of the included CPU speed app....

That is very unfortunate, as that developer has chosen to keep all his work very private and "top secret" and will not share his knowledge, not even on problems he has claimed to solved and was asked to share his solution specifically.... I understand that such issues just look like power struggles to users which do not follow the technical development threads very closely but actually in this case there are very good reasons why this developer is not allowed on XDA.
In the long run such developers do not advance android/hero development at all.

[Q] I've Done Research - Still Have Qs.

Alright - I'm not the type to ask questions if I haven't done hours of research already. Please do not tell me to google it, look harder, etc. Some of this stuff has frustrated me to no end, and some of you may be able to answer the question off the top of your head. So why not help out, right? ^^.
I did take a lot of time writing these questions out, and I know that it is quote a long read. If you only want to answer one here and there, that is fine. I GREATLY appreciate all help. If I sound mad at all during the read, please excuse that. If anything I'm a little frustrated, but definitely not mad at anyone or anything. I just want answers.
My Device:
3D with Silverlight/Netarchy-5 as the Kernel, and Synergy Rev. 316 2.3.3 as my Rom. So far, I have only been able to get a max quadrant score of 2600. Sort of disappointing compared to my last kernel/rom build, especially when I saw all the good Quadrant scores on Synergy's thread (and yes, I tested Ziggy's Stock Kernel too that came with it, but with no change in Quadrant scores).
I want to stick to 2.3.3 until they have overclocking for 2.3.4.
My old Kernel + Rom build was the RCMIX Kernel that could OC to 2050, and the Shooter Rewind 3D ROM. With this set-up, I was able to get a Quadrant score of 3,660.
Unanswered Questions (Or Questions I am still confused on):
2) In the Kernel threads, I always try to find which one will provide the best performance. I have a 4500 mah battery, so I usually can make almost anything last 2+ days for me. However, I'm not sure how to compare Kernels and determine what is better. This is what is listed under RCMIX:
V(R) I/O
SLQB
WIFI FIX
CIFS
TUN
NLS
WIMAX SUPPORT
Wifi Tweak to connect a weaker signal -108db over stock -88db
Under Silverneedle, the other one I think of using, it says:
- CIFS
- TUN
- Overclock up to 1.7ghz (this will likely be expanded in future builds)
- JHash3
- The usual assortment of build tweaks that those familiar with my previous work have come to expect
- Base updated to 2.6.35.14
HOW am I supposed to compare those two performance wise? Also, what does "TUN," "NLS," "V(R) I/O," and "SLQB," "JHash3," "CIFS," etc, mean? I'm assuming WIMAX is for 4g, but I'm not even entirely sure of that.
3) EXT4. I read the thread here, but a lot isn't explained. It says "You should only need to convert to ext4 optimized if you wipe data/nandroid" - is this just system data? I'm assuming it wouldn't wipe SD Card Data, correct? So basically it is like a Factory Reset? But then it says to flash "svn rev 450 or higher" after. Where would I get the Synergy's revised 450 version when I can only get the rev 316 version myself?
5) Virtuous OC MOD. Oh yes - this has probably given me the most trouble than anything. I used to use SetCPU. When I saw that Mod, I uninstalled it, installed virtuous, and it didn't work. I couldn't edit my files via terminal emulator given su permissions, via root explorer, anything. So I thought there was a conflict through some file left by setcpu and virtuous. SO I did a factory reset.
I then installed rev 316 synergy and RCMIX 4.2 with a 1.8ghz allowable OC on it, and also flashed the virtuous oc + dual core mod. First off, I have no clue what the difference is between DualCore VOC and DualCore 1.1 besides the fact that he said 1.1 solved some lag issue some were experiencing. So I installed that, naturally. Saw nothing change whatsoever. I then tried to edit my Virtuous OC files, which was a success! However, when I ran the command "cat /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq/scaling_max_freq" - which is in his thread to determine if it is working, it showed the unedited number.
So I then did a normal reboot, in hopes it needed init.d to trigger, and I got stuck in an infinite reboot.
Lastly, I installed rev 316 by synergy again with silverneedle/netarchy 5 kernel. And that's where I am now. What did I do wrong?
6) Chainfire 3D / Turbo 3D (can't find link atm, but each are from the same creator). Will this help quadrant scores? What is this used for? Is it helpful?
8) What's the point of the V6 Supercharger for Android? How does it improve memory? Does it do the same thing as far as EXT4 is concerned? Is it already implemented in the current roms/kernels?
9) Besides my questions, is there a kernel or rom that you suggest for the best speed/performance, and why?
10) As far as Dual Core goes, as it been more bad than good? I've seen a lot of posts about people lagging with it on. Does it actually help?
11) Without any Dual Core mod on, what does the second CPU normally do anyways? Why would anyone make a dual-core phone without utilizing both dual cores? Or did we lose the dual core availability when we rooted our phones, and we are just now getting some beta beginnings of it back?
Thanks for anyone's time who reads any part of this, and thanks in advance to those who can answer some of them too.
Questions Answered (Thanks for those that helped!!):
If you believe there is more that could have been said in an answer, or that an answer is wrong feel free to add-on! Otherwise, I'm satisfied with the answers I have received and believe them to be right.
1) I've read through the Synergy thread, mostly the beginning and ending pages, and people talk about Revisions that are better than other (obviously). I just hooked up my SVN File Updater for the Nightly Updates, so would I not have access to anything later than Rev 316, but older than the current 2.3.4 version? I really would like to have access to the latest 2.3.3 build that works the best, which would probably include the EXT4.
1-Answer by life64x) 318 is the latest 2.3.3 and the last 2.3.3. Since they upgraded to 2.3.4
4) Let's say I backup my entire system apps + data using Titanium. Does that mean after I Wipe/Reset and go to a different rom/kern, or sense to aosp, that if I restored EVERYTHING, it would still work? Or should I only restore the things I "essentially" need?
4-Answer by life64x) Not all your system apps will be restored...sense...sense widgets etc. Data yes.. user apps will be restored. | I then asked "So titanium won't restore things incompatible with the ROM I am on, even if I hit restore all?" | Answer by life64x: That's correct becuase sometimes it won't let you...say different versions of rosie.apk or framework stuff that deals with sense UI.
7) What is "Cyanogen?" I don't understand if that is a type of software, group of people, or what the purpose of whatever that word is.
7-Answer by life64x and phatmanxxl)Cyanogen is the handle of a person that created a alternate android OS..away from manufacture stock software that is smaller and faster...bloateware removed, basic android is there. Cyanogen is also the name of the product from them. I forgot his name, but he developed a alternate source open source I might add for our phones and now tablets. Many phones have it and each phone has developers for it also. ASOP ROMs such as CM7 and MIUI are not available for the EVO3d yet, they are still in development.
Q. 4. Not all your system apps will be restored...sense...sense widgets etc. Data yes.. user apps will be restored.

Awesome. That answers that. Going back to cm7, is it mostly used for tablets? I don't see it for the 3d.

Try VirusROM. It's a pretty good little AOSP ROM with some of those CM7 features like changeable desktop size, drawer size, custom rosie/launcher, custom animations.

Ah, I suppose I just read those posts wrong in that thread. I assumed that the 2.3.4 version started near revision 500. Definitely a bummer. I tried their latest 2.3.4 version just to see what it was like and it is much cleaner than the 2.3.3 rev 318 version. Guess I'll wait for an OC on 2.3.4 to go back to Synergy Sense.
As for "other testing methods" - what would you recommend? Anything in specific?
And what do you mean by "gamer." What would qualify as a "gamer" for HTC 3D? For example, I do play Legend of Zelda: Orcarina of Time on my phone ^^. It ran fine on RCMIX 2.2.3 and Rewind Shooter as long as I used SetCPU to 1728 max and 1080 min (or higher min, depending on if I had any problems). Haven't tried on my latest setup though.
Thanks again for your help!

I actually just flashed that yesterday night and am loving how much free RAM space I have. Currently have 305MB used and 497MB free. I love having extra space. I have a few problems with it, but nothing worth complaining over really. Stock Kernel that comes with it is probably best, right? Thanks for helping =-).

Use the dual core kernel less heat=save battery with performance increase by taking off the load on a single processor

Too many roms and threads to sift through... which is the "best"?

I just bricked my Vibrant trying to install one rom through Odin. I sent it off to get repaired and should have it back tomorrow.
Which rom should I be attempting to install? I use to install maybe 3-5 roms every time I was going to change or "upgrade" but that gets old.
I'm not sure with the 2.2.1 or 2.3 roms but with 2.2 you can't go wrong with Project V or Bionix.

Those are both great 2.2 roms and they got me through many months of vibrant useage, I have nothing but respect for the devs but they are a little bit outdated simply due to the fact that the teams are working on other projects currently.
Like I said they are good but here is my breakdown (my preferences are to have to to as little as possible on the spot fixes, in a perfect world no fixes would be cool but it would take so so so much work and the Devs that make these roms are already awesome enough to do this in their spare time for us vibrant users. But I do prefer when fixes or tweaks are in the op that are known to be compatible)
NONE OF THIS IS OUT OF ANY DISRESPECT TO ANY DEV, I JUST WANT TO HELP PEOPLE FIND A GOOD ROM FOR THEM.
For 2.2 :
I would say Toxic Crazy 8, They are very fast but as with many 2.2 roms it has a bug where there's no voice mail notification icon. This may be no big deal to you as there are many workarounds including the use of aps like visual voicemail.
Zendroid does not have the voicemail issue but does freeze up and get laggy during heavy use (for me at least).
2.2.1. :
For 2.2.1 Bi-Winning is a solid rom. It hasnt been updated for a while so it may not have all the tweaks of newer roms but it is fast and stable. I personally missed having any skin or smiley's in my sms. This is something that can be altered by a user but I am reviewing based on an out of the flash experience.
Jrafaels Port of Ultimate is awesome! The only thing I had to do was download launcher pro and I was set and stable. Very Fast! super quick on aplication loading!
Froyo Kernels :
For speed and battery life combined, my favorite was immortality 2.2.
The dev has switched to GB now so no more updates but its great and stable as is.
For all out battery and a small sacrifice in multitasking speed Bali, I forget which specific version but its the one that will come with Toxic Crazy 8.
Gingerbread:
I have never flashed a Samsung made rom (JVS, JVR, the upcoming JVT etc..) This is partly due to complication of installation for me as well as being scared off by reading about some difficult bugs in the forum. If I was not planning on buying Tmobiles sgs2 asap I would be playing with them. I really liked explodingboys froyo roms (simply galaxy) as well as EDT's members roms but as I stated I'm apprehensions to attempt a flash. (once i bricked because I missed some op instructions on simply honey)
CM7.1 and Nightlies :
These are less intimidating to try than they seem when first reading the op. Cyanogenmod is really cool and impressive, instead of rebuilding a samsung (or any brands) rom they made their own. Its really high caliber work and I will not be at all surprised if I see Cyanogen mod powering one or more future STOCK Samsung devices.
However, with nightlies you cant dial 911 for an emergency. this is an experimental build so DONT GET MAD AT THE DEV, but it still freaks me out enough to not use it as a daily driver.
my Number 1 ROM is ::::::::: MIUI stock version
I must add that every current version of MIUI is pretty stable and amazing. The reason I want to be stock MIUI for now is because the PowerMod System Enhancer (currently MIUI exclusive) will litterally make your phone about twice as fast and better battery of around 10 to 14 hours depending on usage, some may get more.
I have tried MIUI 3 times and the first two were in june and august of this year. Since then it has become stable enough for use as a daily driver. Play with the themes app for a bit and understand what customization really is
Tweaked kernel V2 is great for speed as well as battery on MIUI.
****
GPS : It is important to know that many (myself included, ive had it in three vibrants) have a hardware defect that makes GPS not work. From what I can remember from some old forum that i couldnt find today, the GPS chip is touching something else on the inside and it screws it up. There are hardware fixes but much like adding a FFC I am WAYYYY to scared to try that stuff hahah
****
BIGGEST THING : READ EVERY OP CAREFULLY, THEY ARE NOT ALWAYS THE SAME INSTRUCTIONS AND I WOULD RECOMMEND TAKING NOTES WHILE READING BECAUSE YOU DONT WANT TO BE LOOKING AT A RECOVERY SCREEN TRYING TO DECIDE WHAT TO DO NEXT
I may post this in another section if I see people with similar questions so please dont get mad at me xda as I said I just want to help, you can let me know if I did with the Thanks Button.
I gave up on GPS a long time ago, If I need a GPS, I use my Garmin if I am that lost anyway, I will be way out of TMobile range...
NextGenV2 by team whiskey rocks for me with the Bullet Kernel
I have recently swtiched to Simply Stock 2.3.5 ( JVT ) it is wicked fast!! if you follow the directions.. use the BG Bootloaders.. and put them on with Odin 1.85.. format your mounts on each flash ( the cache, system and data) you will be a ok...
hmm well if you managed to brick via odin to the point of having to get a replacement then i don't recommend any of the 2.3 roms based on Samsung since they all require a GB Bootloader for CWR and rainbow fixing.
Froyo recommendations are the same as what the prior posters said. as far as Gingerbread goes i recommend Miui there are currently 3 flavors in the development sub forum Revamped, & Lithium by Nick and his Production 360 Group, and Stock Miui
my easy to follow install guide for CM7/Miui
https://docs.google.com/document/d/14xGkh3BuU1OYR6eYY0XAk6BoRHsQAPWEHeVSJ1HcioI/edit?hl=en_US
bionix v and the bali 1.8.8 kernel and ur good to go.
Miui *stock* (based on Android 2.3.5) in my opinion is the best. It's very easily customizable and updated every week! All you have to do is open the updater app to update, no need to fiddle with CWR and no PC necessary... You should at least try it, i'm sure you won't regret it.

Best rom/s to date ?

In your experience what is the best rom to date?
Speed, battery life, data connection etc
i need a speedy rom with decent battery life and a good data connection for push notification and sync etc
Currently on Floyo 1.3.0
I have tried loads over the last few months and as an all round, fast, stable and fully operational rom I stuck with Bharat Goku's "DecKed up for life".
I keep reverting back to it and it has never let me down.
Its light to use, super fast and I've never yet had a Force Close for any reason.
Battery life is great.... easy 24 hours and nearly 48hrs if useage is moderate.
Thats running it overclocked as per my signature below.
It sync's no problem with my Win7 laptop and Wifi, Bluetooth and data are all fully functioning.
It is a Non Sense rom so if its Sense you want.... this is no good for you. If it must be Sense, try Rose V3.6 which I found to be the most stable and quick, even compared to the more recent v4 and v4.5.
All my opinion and no doubt others will swear that Floyo or Cronos Ginger or whatever is quicker...... but for me.... I want to run an up to date version at its best...... and Decked is the one for me.

Can i also ask what radio version you are using ?
Hi!. If you like Sense - I used the Rcmix 2.2b for over a year without a single reinstall. Now I've changed it for a newer version which is Aeonflux and I am more than happy with it. If you don't need Android higher than 2.1 and you are looking for something for everyday use this is the rom for you.
About radios.
Used both newest ones: radio-63.18.55.06PU_6.35.15.14 and radio-63.18.55.06SU_6.35.17.03. Didn't notice any difference.

Thanks but i need 2.2 and up since the applications i use on a daily basis wont work on 2.1 or lower such as facebook messenger and friend caster pro whoch dont seem to work on hardly any 2.2 roms because they always reopen and have to load all messages sometime so still looking for a stable rom atm.
the best rom I've ever used is undoubtedly the Floy VLC 1.3.0, it is fast and never crashes.
Version 2.3.6 of the market is very fluid, unlike many other rom! I am very happy!

[Q] Fastest ROM for Eris + turning phone into non-phone device

I really just want to use my phone as a WIFI device and have it as fast as I can. Seems like most roms I load still make it quite slow.
Also one where the camera works without bugs would be nice.
Anyways, I think there is a script that lets you disable the radio and mobile, but what ROM would be best if I just want something clean, stable, and quick. nothing fancy.
Vanilla I've heard about, but not sure of the correct one to go with.
Thanks

As fast as it can run, with a stable camera? Honestly, I think that you are best off with one of the xtr close-to-stock ROMs (xtrSENSE, xtrROM if you don't want the Sense launcher.) I'm not sure if the WiFi only script works on these - I've never tried them - so you'll have to try yourself.
(One of the best parts about being rooted is that it's easy to try things out and then just Nandroid restore back to something that worked if you try something that messes up.)
I use GSB and really wouldn't consider any other ROM on the Eris as an option. GSB is definitely the best out there, and with the "Wifi only" script the battery life is pretty amazing too.
Currently using GSB v4.4, running efficiently. So it may be an option to choose, however, there are other rom's that run great too. For example, Gin-Tazz-aosp; I found to run great, another one to consider. Subsequently, just try rom's that lurk and see which one runs remuneratively(in your perspective)
I have just rooted my Eris, and I'm debating which way to go regarding a new ROM. I want to keep all of the major device functions, and I'm really just wanting to speed up the operation of the phone. Adding some visual excitement wouldn't be bad either. Does GSB 4.4 provide this?
BTW, the phone is currently running 2.1 OTA.
Thanks!

Well, you can consider xtrSense; since it derives from most of all the Sense. Also, GSB is a CM7 nightly and is particularly focused on CM7 only. Furthermore, it does not contain any Sense functions. Now don't get me wrong GSB Is phenomenal. Though, if your considering something mostly with Sense, xtrSense is advised; also it being overclocked, Collin_Ph script(saves battery), etcetera. Hope this helped
Sent from my ERIS using xda premium
Designman,
Definitely go with GSB 4.4. I've used this series of Roms since oct '10 and it's been great. I just upgraded to the Razr but I still use my Eris to play around on. I actually just flashed 4.4 from 4.3. the other night and it's really good. You'll like it and obviously it's got full functionality, the only major bug that I know might still exist is with Maps 5.5. or later isn't compatible. But there's an easy fix for that.

[Q] [Optimus V] Any ICS roms stable enough for a daily driver

A friend of mine is tired of Froyo and wanted me to put ICS on his phone. From my research it seems like a lot of the development died around December, and there hasn't been much progress made with this particular phone. I know there are a couple roms, but are any of them stable enough to be used on his only android phone or is Gingerbread pretty much the only option? This guy is pretty new to Android, not sure how well he would handle anything with serious issues. Workarounds (like 3rd party apps/etc) are fine, talked to him about that, its more is it solid enough for day in, day out use?
I don't want to flash something for him and have him get frustrated and have to roll it back to Froyo, and I hope there's at least one that's stable enough out there.

Well...I recommend you IcySnap.It's good...it has 1 bug(if you use wi-fi tethering,after you must restart your phone...otherwise,it will restart itself at next use of wi-fi tethering) .Also,video camera lags a lot.However,there are lots of pluses too...fast user interface,looking good,very smooth animations,ics features,good battery life,stable,etc...
tips: use amon_ra recovery...i find it better than cwm.
if the phone reboots itself change to CAF Kernel ( there are some phones which can t handle the default kernel)
make sure the reboots aren't caused by too much overclock.every phone has a different max oc value, mine is 691 mhz.also...use SIO and Smartass v2.
320 mhz min value is ok.
for battery:go to settings->sound->quite hours and activate it from 00:00 am to 23:59 pm and disable haptic feedback and vibrations(phone ringtone/notification/etc won't be affected. Also, disable auto sync before adding a account.(if you have google contacts on ur acc, just go to contacts, and save them to sd card).do the oc settings above.if you want, disabling animations helps a little too.disable any push settings in any app ( like playstore, facebook, etc )
one last tip for this rom...add to hwa all apps that aren't automatically added( facebook for example ) and it will be way smoother.
If you don't want ics...go for gb...ressurection 2.0 is the most stable rom imo.not very smooth, but it works fine.also there are themes for that rom in theme sections.
that s all...good luck
Cold as ice by theKraven has been my daily for months. I love it, and I think it's worth a look. The only major feature it lacks is native wifi tethering. Make sure to flash the Virgin patch to use it on the Optimus v (it is for the Optimus s) and set your min clock speed to 480 to make it stable. You can find it in the Optimus s section of android Central Forums.
