Question... I've installed Kies Mini and when I connect my phone all I get is this
MODEL NAME: SGH-T959 (mobile number)
FIRMWARE VERSION: Unregistered Device
FIRMWARE UPGRADE: [shows nothing]
Phone upgrade button is grayed out
help please?
Are you using the stock TW Launcher or something like ADW or Launcher Pro? If you aren't using Touchwiz try switching back to it & try again. (I'm just speculating on possible cause here based on issues I know others have had.)

I have no idea what you mean bro... when I hook up the phone to the usb the option shows me to choose Kies Mini so I go ahead select that and then I launch Kies Mini App and I get that message... if you can help me a little bit more with detail I would appreciate it
thanks
Nvm, just read your other thread. You have the update already if you got it OTA. Froyo is not available yet for the Vibrant.

I have a GT-I9000 and I just got myself a new vibrant from tmobile yesterday. The guys at samsung really doeesn't make it easier on a customer to upgrade their phones, do they !??
After some tinkering, it seems I got the drivers working but the Kies mini sees it as unregistered device. I'm on the same boat as you are. If there is a froyo update coming tomorrow, then we should be receiving an upgrade for kies mini as well which should solve the problem. If not, then we'll need to go to the tmobile store and ask the guys there about this issue.
Most of the people here will be talking to you about rooting and odin and other stuff that you as a noob have no business doing. I've cooked my own roms and put in some custom roms as well in my I9000. Don't bother with all that. Just wait till the update comes out and then upgrade your phone.

I did a search before posting, but if this is the official update, has anyone tried it and have any problems?

No problems here, but I had to use Odin to flash over stock 2.1 because kies mini did not work for me.
I'm not following, you had to flash over 2.1 with Odin to get the update?
I'm still running stock Eclair (2.1. update 1), I'm assuming I wouldn't have to flash anything and I would just simply need to do the update?
Thanks.
Why do you want the official 2.2? I tried it for about 5 min and regreted doing so. The custom roms available here are way better in my opinion.

some people had problems when using kies mini. kies mini simply would not recognize the phone attached to pc. an article somewhere reported that it is due to the fact that people have not registered their phones on samsung website. for me kies mini worked perfectly and it should work flawlessly for you as well as long as you have samsung usb drivers installed and operate the software properly.
of course there are many greater roms out here, and i would never go back to stock.. but if you want to try stock rom first and learn what's different, try registering your phone on samsung website first and run kies mini.

I don't doubt it at all, it's just that there are a gazillion and one ROMS out there and for a noob like me, it's a bit overwhelming. Not knowing what ROM to flash and then there's the issue of going back to stock if I ever wanted to.
I haven't managed to sift through and find my stock ROM here. JV16.
In case something happens, I'd like to know that I can revert back to stock and not worry about not having a working phone.
So all in all, I really want to, but I guess I'm just so chicken .... you know what. lol
Well, you can always do the 2.2 official update if you are afraid of custom roms, just pay attention to EVERY step before and during flash. I'm using myself stock 2.2 because I'm still waiting for unlock code from Tmo, after that I'm definitely going custom
i have to send my vibrant back to tmobile because it wont charge. i already odin it back to stock. but the question is what does stock look like? ive had it rooted since day one and i forgot lol. it has the sims and avatar and all that fun stuff on there but i just want to double check before i send it back. so far its 2.1 the build name is eclair. i cant remember the rest because the battery died. i used whatever stock was on aio vibrant toolbox i think also its T959UVJFD. . should i be safe? if someone can post a snapshot for me that would be great thanks i looked on the forums for stock pictures and cant find it ><.
Yes, that is all you need.
cool thank you i was just worried about the hefty fee they give you if they catch you sending it back rooted
Tell them you don't know what happened that samsung kies update killed it. Even if you send it in with a custom ROM still installed, DENY, DENY, DENY! Thats what I did I think samsung kies updates have killed soo many phones to date that they don't even question it anymore. You say "samsung kies" they say "we will send you a replacement sir"LOL, end of story.

if you have any doubts, After Odin, hook it up to Kies Mini and update to 2.2 and then format the Internal SD, they will never know.
last quick question. ok my original vibrant which i odin it back to stock heres the info
model number:SGHT959
firmware version:2.1-update1
baseband version:t959uvjfd
kernal version:2.6.29
build number:eclair
while that is that the new vibrant i have has this info in it
same model number
same firmware
baseband version:t959uvji6
kernal:same

thanks. i also did the kies update to froyo just in case thank you all for your help i now have a sexy "new" vibrant that has an actual working usb port! hoorahhh
hi all,
as usual, i hope this isn't a double post.
i'm wondering, when the official gingerbread update arrives, will it work on old basebands??
the reason for this question is because my x10 has a broken usb port and i'm stuck in baseband 2.1.54.
would devs make gingerbread roms based on the official rom for older basebands??
this is bothering me so much because i love my x10 and it would break my heart if i couldn't update my x10 to a fully working gingerbread.
thx for ur input

Might not work most likely not there is a new baseband and kernel required

Do you know what pin on the usb port that is the broken one?
when you connect the phone to the computer, does anything show up?
What I mean is that if your connect has +5V or -5V broken it would still show upon the computer but wouldn't charge (i think), so maybe the phone wouldn't get in charging state but could be connected.
Else the best would be to open and try to fix the broken connector, i don't think this would be too expensive to pay for.
Unless the connection for the usb is broken on the "chip port" and is not a connector broken.
I looked at bunch of threads with fixes but I'm no good at insides of gadgets and it would cost me $70 to fix it at a shop; I would rather replace it for $200 or wait for hardware upgrade if it came down to that though.
I was reading this thread earlier today and I just remembered about this, I was just on the market and I came across this app called Software Data Cable by Proid Mobile Inc. This app can let you transfer files/folders from computer to phone without the need to use a usb.. This could be the solution for the op is looking for if he wants to upgrade to gingerbread. Its free btw... Have a look at it read the faq as it states and let us know if it works.
The software data cable app uses wifi and ftp to transfer your files. Even xrecovery is going to be gone while the phone gets a new kernel.

I don't think u can update headband with software data cable, can u?
Oh ok, wasnt aware of that. Would you be able to take the micro sd and place it into a card reader then transfer the files that way? Out of curiosity.

Impossible as flashing baseband or seus repair requires to be connect in flash mode, so there is no system running on it.
When they manage to get full control of the kernel and bootloader you may have a chance!

You will need a PC. If you were rooted you could download the flashable zip and have it. But again you need a PC to root!
Sorry!
So you don't know anyone with a PC?
You don't need to be rooted to flash the zip version -- you just need CWR or TWRP.
So, have you installed a recovery?
I havn't installed recovery yet, im new to this, but do I download a recovery and then once I do this, what would I use to flash? Ty

From a pure stock phone:
Plan A: Download Kies software (google for it). Install Kies software, connect phone to pc, and let the phone upgrade to 4.1.2. Phone will be pure stock JB.
Plan B: Download JB update file from development section. Download Odin3 software - find it by googling "odin3 1.85". Then run odin software, reboot phone in download mode, connect to pc, and install JB update. Phone will be pure stock JB.
Plan C: Wait a few days and you will get a software update notification. Accept the terms, and phone will update itself to pure stock JB.
If you don't have access to a pc you will have to wait a few. The last ICS update took only four days to hit the phones after the release on the world wide interweb.
I updated but its really not different than 4.0.4 ICS . . . No new features but lots of extra bloatware from at&t.

Will I get the update if my phone has no service? And do I need to be rooted in order to use odin? Thanks to all that helped I will wait until the update is released on my phone since I don't have a PC

Of course you need signal for your phone to know it has an update...
No you do not need root to use Odin. In fact, you use Odin TO root.
can I get the update over WI-Fi connection is what I meant sorry.

It is highly doubtful that this update will be released as an OTA. Better start looking for a PC or go to a friends house.
Why not, Amigo? And do you think that will leave out Canadian phones too?
Almost 800MBs is quite high for an OTA update especially since this is a totally new OS with different partitioning. More likely it will be a Kies update only. Should be no difference for Canadian versions once released. Time will tell and this is only my educated guess by experience. I know I have read that it can be received OTA but nobody that I have seen has reported it yet.
Probably right. But at&t could break the update into two parts. They did that on a big windows phone update a few years ago. Just a speculation.
I know at least telus made the ics update ota..
It's doable, not even that outlandish really, cause Going from ics to jb would be pretty much the same as gingerbread to ics...
oem roms of all 3 android versions have been relatively the same size and partitioning can be done on device within the update script.
It being possible and them doing it are different arguments though lol
