Alright XDA I just got off the phone with Tmobile Android Tech Support and they mentioned that the Vibrant is compatible with the new 4g network that is mid rollout but the phone has to be rooted (done) and new firmware installed (also done, thanks Bionix). Any ideas on how to turn that little feature on?
Wrong section...lol
Anyway, its an automatic thing. The only way you'll see if you are in HSPA+ instead of reg 3G is if you have a Froyo ROM loaded. The only phone (out the box) so far that shows the H is the G2
They're talking about the HSPA+ and our phones aren't capable of HSPA+. They do have HSPA 7.2, so you will see an increase of speed but not the full HSPA+ speeds of the network.
I think someone telling you you stories.

You can also download mobile signal widget from the market. I have it on my vibrant. It shows E, G, 3g, and H, so even though the phone itself won't show it, the widget does. I myself am getting good speeds with my vibrant. I have hit 6.3 mbs down and 1.6 up sitting at my desk at work.

would a tmobile rep really tell you that your phone has to be rooted?
Vibrant does not have HSPA+ you get some speed pump if network in your area are HSPA+ but not full 4G speed.
There is some confusion on how T-Mobile is marketing this upgrade. What they are trying to explain is that because the HSPA+ and the HSPA network share resources, that when the serving cell site is upgraded to the fast 50 mbps backhaul fiber for HSPA+ that the HSPA phones like the vibrant will have a faster backhaul connection and should run at much closer to the 7.2 mbps theoretical throughput. Some curernt 3G sites are running at 2 T1's currently which limits your data throughput to 3 mbps due to the backhaul connection. When the site get upgraded to HSPA+ it still has the same 2 T1's but they add an additional fiber connection that is 25 mbps to 50 mbps depending on the providers capabilities.

What I am happy about is that T-Mobile has decided to stop being so damn scared and is actually advertising it as 4G. True, the technology is based on 3G, but the data speeds are actually better than the current 4G implementations. Verizon and sprint did this with their current 3G CDMA networks. When they first launched EVDO it didn't meet the 2mbps required by the 3G standards. That didn't stop them from marketing it as 3G though and eventually the technology caught up.
And the HSPA+ network is not tapped out either. We could soon see 42 mbps on a HSPA+ network.
I will welcome the day when they stop with all the marketing BS and just advertise the prices and speeds. ill take 21 mbps 3G over 6mbps 4G any day.

As some of the other posters have noted, you were slightly misinformed. T-Mobile's "4G" network is really HSPA+. The Vibrant does not support HSPA+: you cannot get "4G" on the Vibrant because its hardware is not compatible.
However, in those markets that get HSPA+, the regular HSPA speeds should increase—to take advantage of this you do not need to do anything, your phone will automatically handle it for you. The Android version on your device has nothing to do with being able to handle the speed increase.
Some ROMs change the network indicator in the notification bar to show when you are connected to a HSPA network (H) as opposed to a UMTS (3G) one. If you feel that you ought to be getting HSPA network connections, but your phone is only showing "3G", you can verify this yourself by going to "Settings > About phone > Status": there is an entry there that says "Mobile network type", and this will either say GPRS, EDGE, UMTS or HSPA.
Further, why are questions being asking in a development forum? Will a mod please move this to the appropriate location, and will people please start paying attention and posting their questions in the proper location.

The "H" is for HSPA. It doesn't matter if it's "plus" or not. The HD2 is capable of HSPA 7.2 3G speeds, not HSPA+ 3G 4G speeds, but since HSPA+ is simply and upgrade to the existing HSPA 7.2, then not only will HSPA 7.2 phones (like the HD2 and all current T-Mobile Android phones) work on HSPA+ networks, but they will perform closer to the 7.2Mbps maximum possible download speed of HSPA 7.2 technology. However, they will not reach the higher speeds that are possible with phones designed for HSPA+ like the G2.
Short answers:
-Does the Vibrant work on T-Mobile's "4G network" (HSPA+)?
Yes
-Does the Vibrant get better speeds on "4G" than on 3G?
Yes
-Can the Vibrant take full advantage of T-Mobile's "4G data" and achieve speeds beyond what is possible on 3G (HSPA 7.2)?
No
Just want to point out that its hsDpa and hspa+. Hsdpa is up to 7.2, hspa+ is up to 21. None of the t mobile phones tell you which you are on, because it doesn't matter unless you are on a g2 (which still doesn't tell you, just says H either way). It would be nice to know, but a quick speed test will always make it obvious. If your getting over 1.5 down (tmobile 3g max) your on hsdpa.

HSPA is a term used to cover both HSDPA and HSUPA. The "D" is for "download" and the "U" is for "upload". When we're talking about network speeds like 7.2 vs 21, we're usually only talking about download speeds, so strictly speaking we've only been talking about HSDPA for both 7.2 and +.

Mostly true. HSPA (High-Speed Packet Access) does consist of both HSDPA (High-Speed Downlink Packet Access) and HSUPA (High-Speed Uplink Packet Access). HSDPA allows for 7.2 Mbps downstream on T-Mobile's US network, although HSDPA can accommodate speeds as high as 14.0 Mbps. HSUPA allows for upstream speeds up to 5.7 Mbps.
Originally, most carriers started with HSDPA, while maintaining the original 384 kbps speeds on the upstream of 3G. For this reason there was a difference between HSDPA and HSPA: HSDPA was used for received faster downloads but still receiving the lower 384 kbps upstream speed; HSPA was used for when the handset was received HSDPA speeds downstream and HSUPA speeds on the upstream.
HSPA+ (Evolved High-Speed Packet Access) allows for up to 56 Mbps downstream and 22 Mbps upstream. T-Mobiles "4G" HSPA+ network is only getting 22 Mbps downstream at present, but it is possible that this could increase.
True 4G service means that 100 Mbps or greater is possible downstream. Sprint's WiMax "4G" network is not true 4G either: it is only rated at 40 Mbps at present, although theoretically it can achieve 1 Gbps.
However, all of this is moot, since the Vibrant (like all other SGS devices at present) does not have a HSPA+ radio, and therefore can only reach a maximum 14.0 Mbps downstream, and 5.7 Mbps upstream. Also, this really does belong in either General or Q&A.

Is anyone with an X10 on at&t getting HSPA speeds?
Im only getting 1.60 d/l and .72 upload
Nope I never got it, I only see 3G logo on my phone, no sign of H
AT&T only supports HSPA ( which HSDPA AND HSUPA) on the iPhone 4 and aircards. It only supports HSDPA on the rest of the smartphone lineup.
With that said, if the X10 supports HSDPA, it should be enabled (despite the 3G icon). Whether or not you actually get HSDPA speeds is dependant on AT&Ts network in your area.
The same thing came up with Samsung Captivate users. I get 2.5Mbps down and 0.4Mbps up on the Samsung Captivate. If we flashed the modem to the vanilla Galaxy S modem, then we get HSUPA speeds (1Mbps+).
So it appears for some strange reason, AT&T chose to have HSUPA disabled.
i am using x10i and right now the icon logo shows "H" when i am connecting t-mobile USA network...
edit: i got average 4000 kbps d/l and average 1600 kbps u/l... again it depends on the area where i am standing....
In Greenville I get upwards of 2Mbps downstream and 2 Mbps upstream depending on location.
I am on ATT and get the "H" on mine. I will do a speed test.
EDIT: Best result out of 3 test:
Up: 160 KB - KiloBytes
Down: 160KB - KiloBytes
I don't think at&t rolled out their HSPA network yet

I just looked at my Speedtest.net tests on the phone, my network downloads are usually between .88Mbps and 3.51Mbps and my uploads from 0.13 to a high of 4.43Mbps. My signal strength is -89dbm. The high speed is late at night when the ping was only 12ms instead of 200+.
In the area that I live, I use mostly public WiFi. Comcast, TWC and CableVision have agreed to share a wifi network for their cable customers. CV spent $350m to start it. It's almost consistantly 2-3mbps.
I have upgraded my vibrant plan to 4g and I was wondering if anyone can make a zip for the 4g signal that will match the frobuntu donate theme I asked the developer for frobuntu if he could he hasn't yet so post it on that page if possible I hope he doesn't mind

Vibrant + sXe V3.1 + OCLF
The Web plans were renamed they are still the same at T-Mobile you will only recieve full 4g speeds in 4g areas and on 4g phones.
How do you get a 4g plan on a 3g phone? I did notice in the Flashable Stock JK6 rom sombionix posted has both 3g and 4g icons. I thought you had to have a 4g phone to get 4g service.

Fear the beard...
Technicly Speaking Vibrant does support so Called "4G" speed, since its not 4g on Tmobile, 4G its either Wimax (sprint has it) or LTE , T-Mobile has only HSPA+ , so whats HSPA+ its the Same HSDPA network which is Considered to be 3.5G, and since its HSDPA I got speed on Vibrant in Alabama 4.7MBit Per second on speed test, 3G Doesnt support that speed because 3G is UMTS its max 3.6MBit per second, New HTC G2 and HTC Evo 4g or whatever tmobile has at the moment calling "4G" phone doesnt Support LTE or WiMax, it supports HSDPA with 14.4MBit per second speeds, Vibrant works on same Frequency and same HSDPA with 7.2Mbit per second which is Twice less. So Basicly if lets say you live in city where VIbrant can get 3MBit per second , you 4G phone will get 3Mbit as well, but if you live in city where you can get 7Mbits per second on your G2 or 4G phone you will get same speed on Vibrant too. Just icon will not be changed. The trick Tmobile using to let you think you are on 4G instead of 3.5G is by Setting HSDPA network icon as H or 4G instead of regular icon 3G , when phone goes to UMTS it shows 3G, when it goes to GSM it gets to E and so on . So its just Icon nothing more, stop worrying about Icons , what really matters that Tmobile doesnt offer speeds of more than 5Mbit anywhere yet. Maybe maximum 6Mbits if you live close enough to HSDPA Tower. (like 10 feet away). And this speed Vibrant will hold on ease. So Main Point and Bottom Line is ANY Phone that supports HSDPA Network with up to 7.2Mbit per second will be receiving Maximum Tmobile Speed which is avarage 3-5Mbit per second depends on your location and dont mind if it says 3G and not 4G speed on your phone will be Exacly the same since its Same Network HSDPA. Hope it clears everything since its Just Marketing Trick nothing else.
Oh forgot to mention if you have 2 phones in your hand both Vibrant (or any other 3.5g phone) and 4G phone from tmobile , both on same tmobile, sometimes difference can be in speed because it also depends on Antena strenght on your phone, some phones have better antena thats why they get more singnal but difference is not big at all. And if you ll stand next to HSPA+ (HSDPA) Tower with both Phones in your hands , Speed will be IDENTICAL. But on NEW phone it will show 4G even if its on same 3.5G (HSDPA or so Called HSPA+ how tmobile likes to call it) So 4G phone is basicly has overclocked Icon and Vibrant downclocked icon which Displays 3G , I think both phones would be correct if they will show H or 3.5G icon. But if they both will show H or 3.5G who will buy 4g phone ? and why the hell Tmobile then shows comercial of 4g ? Tmobile doesnt want you to know the truth, they want you to believe that by Buying 4G phone (which costs more) you will get better speed which is a big fat lie. Otherwise you will not fall for it and stick with your 7.2MBit/s HSDPA phone and it doesnt matter if its Vibrant or G1 or anyother phone. If you want to check which phones support 7.2MBit on HSDPA or 14.4 and see phones that have Wimax or upcoming LTE check gsmarena.com
these are all 3.5G Phone available for all carriers at the moment notice MyTouch 4G on tmobile in the list ) http://www.gsmarena.com/results.php3?sName=&idMaker=0&chkHSDPA2100=selected&idAvailability=0&YearAnnounced=0&nPriceLow=0&nPriceHigh=0&idCurrency=0&idFormFactor=0&idDualSIM=0&idQwerty=0&HeightMax=0&WidthMax=0&ThicknessMax=0&WeightMax=0&idOS=11&idDisplay=0&idDisplayRes=0&fDisplaySize=0&idDisplayTech=0&idTouchscreen=0&idAccelerometer=0&id35mm=0&idCamera=0&idCameraFlash=0&idVideoRecorder=0&idSecondaryCamera=0&idExpansionCard=0&idGPS=0&bWLAN=0&bEDGE=0&bGPRS=0&idBluetooth=0&bIR=0&bEmail=0&bWAP=0&bJava=0&idRadio=0&bMMS=0&idRingtones=0&sColor=&StandBy=0&TalkTime=0&sFreeText=
Abriviation of HSPA is High Speed Packet Access, Which has 2 types, HSDPA (High Speed "download" Packet Access) and HSUPA (Upload speed)
Niether WiMax nor LTE are 4G, apparently.
They're just faster than what has gone before, but still slower than HSPA+, if memory serves.
Regardless of all that, 'upgrading' your plan to "4G" is stupid with a Vibrant, b/c it doesn't support anything resembling said *G.

the mytouch 4g gets better speeds. Side by side with my friend's mt4g i get 1.5mb max he gets 2.7mb max.
Ok WiMax is slightly Faster than HSDPA for sure (dont mind spint since they USE 3g not WIMAX Network) LTE Can hold Speeds up to 60MBit per second in most countries Minimum speed is 20MBit per second, WiMax can hold up to 20Mbit as well in Most european countries it gets 9-10Mbit Per second. And 3MBit in bad locations. So Officially... 4G its LTE 2 or Wimax 2 which are next generations of Wimax and LTE. But here how it goes, GSM first Geneneration is GPRS, then second Generation is EDGE , then goes UMTS network for phones with Sim Cards, And EDVO-A (same 3g) for CDMA phones. Now Next generation which is 3.5G Its HSPA (HSPA+ its not a special network its still HSPA ) So with Maximum Download Speeds HSDPA 14.4Mbit per second, and upload HSUPA 5.72MBit. Now lets get to 4G , or I preffer to call it PRE-4G But after 3.5G. Main Candidate is LTE! Since I never saw Speed on LTE Network anywhere in europe Less than 14Mbit per second and Maximum speed I saw was 68mbit per second or so with some Europe Mobile Provider. Now lets go to WIMAX. Its not even Mobile network such as GSM or UMTS or HSPA or LTE. Its more of Next generation of WIFI. It works and acts as wifi more than Mobile network but with Big difference. Wifi N Routers for example can work up to 300feet range maybe even little more. While Wimax can work up to like 30-50mile RANGE! So basicly Internet Providers just Use those Special Routers with Huge Antena so you will get signal in your city And trasmit very big download and upload speeds. So thats Wimax. its like Extended range WiFi nothing else. So basicly if Sprint even has WiMax they are acting more like Att or Verizon DSL with speeds up to 3mbit per second plan and just trasmit it over WiMax to you if you are in range ofcourse. If not you will use just EDVO-A (3g)
So Basicly 2g is GSM or CDMA, 3g is UMTS or EDVO-A, 3.5G is HSPA, Pre4G or 4G Candidate is LTE at the moment. And real 4G will be LTE2. Wimax is just Next generation of WiFi.

Well try to run tests like 10 times , and calculate avarage speed. I had problem with my Vibrant that I got 2.8Mbit one time on 1 spot. Its called Latency (lag) then I reran speedtest and it showed 4.5mbit per second. So does it Mean my "3g" phone faster than his 4g ? No since his phone capable of holding 14.4mbit per second on HSDPA while my only 7.2Mbit, But it could mean one of two things, 1 your phone is deffective antena or software for antena or HTC has better Antena and or better Firmware which makes antenna signal is better. Tmobile just doesnt provide good speed in your area. And when you ll run same test on same spot (do not hold sides of your since it can lose signal Antena is on the side of the phone you are blocking it) The proper way to test you and your friends phone is. Put both phones on table make sure distance will be at least few feet from each other so they will not block frequencies of each other. And press SPEEDTEST app same time. And run test about 5-10 times, if your phone will still show slower speed, try to change places put your phone on his place and his on yours. And if still you will get slower speed I suggest you go replace phone since you got it with deffective antena or firmware. But I bet his phone works with Froyo and Vibrant doesnt even have official froyo yet that may fix antena signal. I think vibrant has same problem as Iphone 4 had. But iphone 4 fixed it with 4.1 Firmware which updated baseband and Vibrant didnt have any fix. Anyway I got 4.7Mbit per second driving my car on Highway in Alabama using Stock Android 2.1 JK6. I didnt test speeds in that place anymore sitting on Axura 2.0.6 but in Miami, FL I get mostly 2.5-3.6mbit per second. But im sure if you ll go with your friend to T-Mobile HSPA tower (if you know the location) and put your phones to test you will get same speed. Tmobile doesnt offer bigger speeds than 6mbit Im sure of it. So the phones are equal at the moment.
If you don't like the option for the 4g keep it to yourself but for you idiots I have 4g coverage on my vibrant I upgraded it a few weeks ago and it shows up on my bill as unlimited 4g web so call t-mobile and ask them to upgrade your plan, making statements that you fail to research is ignorant and you just look stupid

NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- You've seen the 4G advertisements from T-Mobile, Sprint and Verizon, bragging about a much-better wireless network with blazing fast speeds.
Here's the secret the carriers don't advertise: 4G is a myth. Like the unicorn, it hasn't been spotted anywhere in the wild just yet -- and won't be any time in the near future.
The International Telecommunication Union, the global wireless standards-setting organization, determined last month that 4G is defined as a network capable of download speeds of 100 megabits per second (Mbps). That's fast enough to download an average high-definition movie in about three minutes.
None of the new networks the carriers are rolling out meet that standard.
Sprint (S, Fortune 500) was the first to launch a network called 4G, going live with it earlier this year. Then, T-Mobile launched its 4G network, claiming to be "America's largest 4G network." Verizon (VZ, Fortune 500) plans to launch its 4G network by the end of the year, which it claims will be the nation's largest and the fastest. AT&T (T, Fortune 500) is expected to unveil its 4G network next year.
Those networks have theoretical speeds of a fifth to a half that of the official 4G standard. The actual speeds the carriers say they'll achieve are just a tenth of "real" 4G.
So why are the carriers calling these networks 4G?
It's mostly a matter of PR, industry experts say. Explaining what the wireless carriers' new networks should be called, and what they'll be capable of, is a confusing mess.
To illustrate: Sprint bought a majority stake in Clearwire (CLWR), which uses a new network technology called WiMAX that's capable of speeds ranging from 3 Mbps to 10 Mbps. That's a different technology from Verizon's new network, based on a standard called Long Term Evolution (LTE), which will average 5 Mbps to 12 Mbps.
Seeing what its competitors were up to, T-Mobile opted to increase the speed capabilities of its existing 3G-HSPA+ network instead of pursuing a new technology. Its expanded network -- now called 4G -- will reach speeds of 5 Mbps to 12 Mbps.
No matter what they're called, all of these upgrades are clear improvements -- and the carriers shelled out billions to make them. Current "3G" networks offer actual speeds that range from between 500 kilobits per second to 1.5 Mbps.
So Sprint and Verizon have new, faster networks that are still technically not 4G, while T-Mobile has an old, though still faster network that is actually based on 3G technology.
Confused yet? That's why they all just opted to call themselves "4G."
The carriers get defensive about the topic.
"It's very misleading to make a decision about what's 4G based on speed alone," said Stephanie Vinge-Walsh, spokeswoman for Sprint Nextel. "It is a challenge we face in an extremely competitive industry."
T-Mobile did not respond to a request for comment.
One network representative, who asked not to be identified, claimed that ITU's 4G line-in-the-sand is being misconstrued. The organization previously approved the use of the term "4G" for Sprint's WiMAX and Verizon's LTE networks, he said -- though not for T-Mobile's HSPA+ network.
ITU's PR department ignored that approval in its recent statement about how future wireless technologies would be measured, the representative said. ITU representatives were not immediately available for comment.
"I'm not getting into a technical debate," said Jeffrey Nelson, spokesman for Verizon Wireless. "Consumers will quickly realize that there's really a difference between the capabilities of various wireless data networks. All '4G' is not the same."
And that's what's so difficult. The term 4G has become meaningless and confusing as hell for wireless customers.
For instance, T-Mobile's 4G network, which is technically 3G, will have speeds that are at least equal to -- and possibly faster -- than Verizon's 4G-LTE network at launch. At the same time, AT&T's 3G network, which is also being scaled up like T-Mobile's, is not being labeled "4G."
That's why some industry experts predict that the term "4G" will soon vanish.
"The labeling of wireless broadband based on technical jargon is likely to fade away in 2011," said Dan Hays, partner at industry consultancy PRTM. "That will be good news for the consumer. Comparing carriers based on their network coverage and speed will give them more facts to make more informed decisions."
Hays expects that independent researchers -- or the Federal Communications Commission -- will step in next year to perform speed and coverage tests.
Meanwhile, don't expect anyone to hold the carriers' feet to the fire.
"Historically, ITU's classification system has not held a great degree of water and has not been used to enforce branding," Hays said. "Everyone started off declaring themselves to be 4G long before the official decision on labeling was made. The ITU was three to four years too late to make an meaningful impact on the industry's use of the term."
I got 4g speed on mine after my upgrade and my signal went from 3g to now says H.

That's what I thought too, and I'm also showing HSDPA... hmmm... but the upload speeds are HSPA+ so it can't be right.
I thought both 3G and "4"G could be called HSPA. High Speed Packet Access.
Doesn't the D stand for download. I thought HSUPA (U for upload) was the feature that got all the publicity with the Atrix, as it wasn't activated at launch.
I am sitting on H+ according to my status but in about it says UMTS, which I thought was 3G. My HTC 8525 ran on UMTS 4 years ago.

I think in the about settings HSPA means HSPA+ while HSDPA means the slower standard. I think it is probably a bug. My Atrix could distinguish between HSPA and HSDPA in the about settings. In areas without 4G it would read UMTS or HSDPA while in advanced backhaul areas it would read HSPA. On The GSII it seems to be messed up. I never saw HSPA.

Mine is acting the same way my Infuse was. It never seems accurate. Obviously if you pass the 0.33mbps range your HSUPA is enabled. That's about all we really know for sure, hehe
Phone status display frequently is broken in the framework and not reporting correctly.
For example, the Infuse would report UMTS when in an HSPA+ mode...

I'd imagine the marketing\disguising one technology as another and not being forthcoming about where has "enhanced backhaul" nor defining what "enhanced backhaul" even is in terms of speed, likely doesn't help things either ;-)
hspa and hsdpa are both 3.5G at best

Dial *#0011# on your phone. The screen will show what exactly is your phone using. So far, I have yet seen 'HSPA+ used' display anything other than 0.
How do you enable hspa+ on an atrix 4g? I can never seem to get the "H+" or "4g" icon, only H (i've checked inside the phone settings and it is definitely just hspa, not hspa+, or hspa: category 10 or otherwise)
I bought my atrix 4g off craigslist and used it on ATT straight talk for a month and had horrible speeds and never had hspa+ (only hspa) so I had the phone carrier unlocked and took it to tmobile monthly 4g but still I am only getting hspa (not hspa+).
Basically, is this phone capable of getting "pseduo-4g" hspa+ or is it locked to hspa? I've seen several mentions of ATT shipping the phone with hspa+ disabled, but no way of knowing how to enable it.
Other info: I am currently using neutrino ROM.
Thanks!
You will only get edge on t mobile with any att phone.............

Well, its now an unlocked phone and I know I get more than edge because I have hspa right now.

I already gave you the answer... If you believe you can get 3g with an atrix 2 on t mobile, you must be a hero.
The bands are not compatible. A quick google search will plainly show you that.

Except that Tmobile is refarming their 1900mhz pcs from 2g to 3g... so yeah you can. Las Vegas and Kansas City are already official... so what?

Also, someone correct me if I'm wrong, the Atrix 4G does 14.4mbps hspa, isn't the 21mbps the actual hspa+?
I know it may not be possible but, Hes talking about an ATRIX 4g. Not ATRIX 2. READ MUCH???
Sent using AT&T DROID BIONIC.
The Atrix 4G and the Atrix 2 both support T-Mobile's "4G" network which is simply HSPA+ but the best you'll do with the Atrix 4G is 14.4 Mbps (good luck getting that actual speed). The Atrix 2 can hit the 21.1Mbps but not the 42Mbps speeds, and again, good luck with that.
The Atrix 4G is fully capable of being used with T-Mobile now that they are refarming/rolling out their 3G and "4G" 1900 MHz band, people in some areas still haven't gotten the upgrade yet but in many places in the US you can get 3G speeds and even the "4G" HSPA+ with that device on T-Mobile without issues. Here in Vegas when they turned that on a few weeks back (the day the iPhone 5 was released) I had an Atrix 4G and got T-Mobile 3G/HSPA+ service that afternoon with speeds in excess of 6Mbps because I live across the street from a cell site for them, average is about 3-5Mbps most of the time.
The Atrix 4G will most commonly show HSPA:10 when used with T-Mobile, in my experience (that's on ICS or JB ROMs, GB won't show that level of detail/info).
As for the HSPA or HSPA+, they all basically work the same way. 14.4Mbps is considered under the HSPA+ "umbrella" as the saying might go.

I didn't know tmob where deploying a hspa frequency that at&T use. Thanks for that tip.
10Mbps achieved on Atrix on at&T 3g network here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1905464
hspa category 10 is 'characterized' as hspa+ but is not hspa+ (evolved hspa) and should not display h+ or 4g on the status bar for that reason. The 4g branding is exactly that... "branding" and at&T should have never used 4g in the name in my opinion. They always said "4g like speeds"
See post #4 at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1912716 where there are also a couple links I posted that I found interesting on this subject.

Hmm, interesting info guys. I do indeed live in Vegas and have been using a GB ROM (maybe I'm not seeing hspa: category 10 because of this).
Sounds like I've done all I can then, thanks!

Only ics and jb display the additional radio info.
The key is that you are on a radio that is suited to your rom and provider. 36p and 37p are the two most popular at&t radios, 37p being the official production release and used on many releases. Both 36p and 37p operate at hspa 10. Each provider is at differing phases, as well as having differing standards in their network, for how they implement the any bells and whistles of cellular. There is so much to it.

Terrible speeds with H+ Icon. Hspa marked as H+.
I am only getting Edge, Umts and HsPa.. My phone marks hspa as H+. I check on status and Umts and Hspa is marked as H+.. My speeds are terrible, only getting 1.8 mbps.

Might get the app on Google Play called Antennas, it'll show you the cell sites/towers you're connected to on maps; if you're connected at a given mode (like HSPA or UMTS) but you're pretty far from the site/tower, that could be the primary reason you get the "terrible" speeds. Antennas does work best, however, by putting the phone in 2G/EDGE mode but it is capable of doing 3G/4G/HSPA/UMTS/etc as well.
I live literally across the street from the main site/tower that I stay connected to so I pull 5-8Mbps when I'm in HSPA+ mode but, I keep my Photon in 2G/EDGE mode probably 99% of the time, I have Wi-Fi at home also so there's just no reason to use up any of my 5GB of bandwidth for the "4G" side of things.
T-Mobile 1900 mhz service on Atrix 4G in MD!!
So having played with a couple of 4Gś @ work (and how unawesome they made my G2x look!) I purchased a combo phone and lapdock. This before i realized they worked on different frequencies!!! DOH!
Fortunately, T-Mobś been ahead of me on the curve. I read that they started the long road to providing their service to the souls stranded out in Verizon &/or AT&T limbo...
So I swapped my sim and...Yaaaay! 4 of 5 bars of....wait for it... H+!!!
Then, BOOOOO! No data! No MMS. No internet!:crying:
A few hours of online (and Iḿ ashamed to say, trial and error build prop editing) plus 3 calls to T-Mob yielded this in an email:
¨APN settings for data and picture messaging (MMS): Android" on T-mobileś support page (as a noob I cannot post the link):silly:
Iḿ now docked, working, spotifying and sharing ´ẃif my XDA fam!¨
Hope this helps!
New I-9300 owner here on AT&T. I noticed today that my phone says HSDPA in network settings. Is this the same thing as HSPA+? Do I need to change some settings someplace? I am temporarily in small town, so hard to tell from speed tests -- best I have seen so far is 2704 down.
Thanks for your help!
Another thing I can't figure out is how to choose an APN. I set up one to match my GS2, but after I select it, it switches itself back to one AT&T set up. ???
There is no such thing as HSPA in technology - only HSUPA (HSPA Upload) and HSDPA (HSPA Download) - which are cooperative but not necessary for each other.
Sounds as if the Apn failed, so it tries the other ones. An easy method is to delete the other APN's and hope it understands what you want

I don't think your statement that "there is no such thing as HSPA" is correct.
The Samsung PDF user manual for the I747 lists both HSPA and HSPA+ where it explains the 4G icons, and I have personally seen both HSPA:11 and HSPAP:15 on my device by looking at Status > Mobile network type.

I know this is an older thread, but I was just reading this support document yesterday:
http://support.t-mobile.com/docs/DOC-4987
Data services
HSPA (high speed packet access) is actually two different components. HSDPA (downlink) and HSUPA (uplink). Like our 3G voice services, HSPA is WCDMA based, so the same improvements to efficiency and bandwidth are seen here.
HSPA has a maximum download speed of 14 Mbps.
Customers on 3G can use voice and data services simultaneously.

This page provides an overview of HSPA+, which is the technology T-Mobile uses for our 4G network.
HSPA+ is an enhancement of T-Mobile's 3G HSPA technology.
It offers data faster speeds but requires the necessary backhaul is in place (backhaul refers to the pipe that connects our towers to the Internet).
All 3G sites are already using HSPA+ technology but they are referred to as 3G until that backhaul is there to support the faster speeds.

Dunno.
My phone has (in order of speed)
3G
H (HSDPA)
H+ (HSPA+)
It doesn't do 2G on my network.
So I assume that H is actually just HSPA.
I've seen the following marks on my S3 (International 16GB, Stock 4.1.2).
G
E
3G
H
H+
G is barely usable. Like 0.02mb down, ping over 1000.

If you really want to know these will explain it all in full
HSPA+
HSDPA
HSDPA download speeds up to 42mbps where HSPA+ has download speeds up to 337mbps with release 11, 168mbps with earlier release 7
E - edge = slowest
G - gprs = slow
3G = "normal" speeds
H - HSDPA = Faster download speeds
H+ - HSPA+ = Fastest speed on the S3
4G = 3 times as fast as 3G, only on LTE version
