Okay, I did everything I could to get this done without help but I really cant do anything else on my own. Here is everything I tried to get this stupid sim code. The unlock app asks me if I am sure I have a galaxy s. I tried the older way which tells me "permission denied" when running that app. Then I tried setting up a ADB which I did but only to find out that permission was denied again, even though I have superuser access. I think it is too late to ask for help, I wanted to get this done over the weekend but it looks like I have to just pay the thirty bucks to the guy on ebay. OMG what a huge waste of time. The titles on these forums are confusing for noobs like me and the information is way to cluttered. Every time I do find some information it seems like the guy posting is just not interested in giving out to much info like I wont be able to understand it. Oh yea, T-Mobile should be sued for this ****. I might call Samsung directly tomorrow just to see if they have the code, otherwise the guy on ebay probably has the safest job security the economy is offering thanks to T-Mobile which will never get my money after this ****.

i still dont know what i need that for... i am trying to search for the hex way to do it, i read that i need to have my screen stay on for a prompt message on the vibrant...
I have retrieved my bml3.bak thing and used sgux2 to find the unlock code but it came back with nothing, then i tried searching for the SSNV thing but the number dont look anything like described in the post i read.
the numbers dont have any periods seperating them i dont even think the first set of number if you can call them that are repetitive. this is getting to be really frustrating, why am i the only one with this problem.
I've read that JI6 does not play nice in unlock department, the unlock code is now harder to retrieve from the phone itself if possible at all.
One of the suggestions would be flash back to JFD base, retrieve the code, and flash back to JI6 or custom ROM.
have you tried calling T-mobile? they will give it to you no problem, i think you need to be with them over 6 months or something like that, i called T-mobile on friday and got my code via e-mail on saturday and it unlocked, tired a ATT sim and works fine.
P.S. this this is the second phone i have unlocked with t-mobile and no issues. best of all its FREE!!!!!!!
Tmobile guy told me that he would be fired if he gave me the code... Ill try going back to original state because I did upgrade... Can I do that with odin?
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
Did you update to JI6? Like the guy said, did you install busybox? Busybox is like a huge set of useful tools/utilities apps/one can use. If the app requires it, just install it by downloading "busybox installer."
Oh and first make sure you definitely have root first. Download "Android Terminal Emulator" from the market and type "su" and tell us what happens from there.
Is that gonna hurt my phone, terminal doesnt sound good...

Go to apps, launch busy box and check what does it say, If it says installed then you are all set to follow instructions to unlock the phone without any issues.
i don't think i can unlock with this method... because i flashed with odin all of my stock data was lost. the phone does not have the unlock code anymore i don't think. i wonder if the imei number is correct too, if it isn't right then i cant unlock the phone at all

So I found a GSII on the train today, Nobody to been seen so I picked it up and took it with me, Got home to discover a lock screen, No smudges on the screen to guess the lock. Look at the SD Card there's a few images of a kid and some toys but that is all, Im guess everything else is on the internal memory.
Anyway to unlock this device and get any info to contact the owner, Tried the networks, they said it has not been reported as lost or stolen.
Not the kind of guy to keep this. I have a Galaxy Nexus
Could you try to set your phone like it doesn't ask for pin and then insert the sim card from that sgs2 to look for numbers like mom

Wow, that's quite polite of you.
You're the reason I keep an "Owner's Info" message on my lockscreen (and other people are the reason that I use a 9-digit PIN).
I commend you for your honesty, but unfortunately I can't provide assistance.
It could have been stolen, which would explain the absence of a SIM. Maybe the previous 'owner' couldn't do anything with it either and gave up.
You might be able to flash a new ROM, but everything would be deleted...and you'd still not have the owner's info.
Good luck, sir and thank you for your honesty!
No phone numbers??? Try syncing with google... see if there are any email addresses or ANYTHING on the phone... Very honest though hats off...
I once found a phone like you did but found loads of pics of him cheating on his wife :S there was a message with HER address on so I delivered it.... I wonder what did happen to them lol

For something like this I'd exhaust all possibilities to find the owner personally first, otherwise the Lost 'n Found will "lose" it, even PD's "lose" stuff. The owner is lucky that someone whom doesn't want to keep it, or sell it, has found it.
Edit: although without a sim card it's probably a drug mule's phone and you should bring a gun to the meet just in case.
Done a factory reset, Which says it will wipe data. It failed, Now I can look at teh pictures and try figure out who they are. More childrens movies on the internal stornage
Woah, how kind of you wanting to return the phone.. Only one thing comes to my mind - all phones should be trackable by their IMEI - perhaps try flashing a full wipe base ROM via ODIN (maybe pulling all the data you can thru adb first?), and perhaps try contacting samsung officials in your country about a found phone?? That is if the guy was fortunate enough to create a samsung account or something that could identify him..
EDIT: Okay I found a thread, perhaps you can try running an ADB command like this to get the contacts database??
http://www.droidxforums.com/forum/droid-x-rescue-squad/30987-acquire-contacts-via-adb.html
Pulling the contacts database is good but if adb wasn't already enabled you would have to root it with cf-root then boot into recovery and run the adb commands from it since adb is enabled in recovery by default *may have to mount data partition*
Pin is stored in the EFS folder, and no factory reset or firmware flash will touch that. Messing with EFS can have dire consequences if corrupted (no IMEI = no network connection).
But if no choice, take a look at Hellcatdroid's solution with
ADB here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1476634
Edit as previous poster, maybe even flash a Chainfire CF-Root kernel, and then boot into CWM recovery. Mount partitions, and use windows program "Android Commander" to file explore any system partition for more info. The EFS could backed upped and even deleted. But risks outlined earlier.

I was fiddling with adb after work and out of curiosity I tried following the unlock procedure that I used on a Xoom before. This has probably been tried so thats why Im asking. When I issue reboot bootloader and then fasboot oem unlock through adb, it says "If you wish to proceed please re-enter the command containing the unique ID of your device: "Then it lists an ID." Its 16 characters long. Is this echo normal? I did get my fastboot.exe from the internet somewhere because the SDK I got didnt have it.
I looked online and the way you unlock the bootloader on an Atrix is by doing the same steps so that leads me to my question: What happens if I re-enter the command with the unique ID? Im just afraid to screw something up. That is according to this link: http://mobilegeeky.com/hack-unlock-the-atrix-4g-bootloader/
I find it hard to believe that unlocking the bootloader is that easy but I just dont want to end up in a "curiosity killed the cat" kind of scenario and brick my phone.
Thanks guys!
I tried it for you . It just returns a message that says "OEM unlock is not implemented".

Well, I figure I don't have much to lose. I can upgrade at a discounted price if I want so I figured what the heck. Worst case, if for some reason I couldn't sbf my way out of a jam I'd have to use the upgrade. That wouldn't be all bad though.

Well, I've done a limited amount of reading on the nexus. If I was looking to upgrade, I'd be tempted to get one except for one thing. No sd card. Don't think I want a phone without support for a sd card. I also did some reading in the nexus forum here. The phone isn't without it's faults. For one thing, it looks like there's a fair amount of people who aren't happy with the glass on it. The say it scratches easy. That can be remedied with a screen protector of course, but, if you happen to be one (like me) who doesn't care for screen protectors, well, it's a negative too.
Anyway, I haven't done enough reading to come to a final conclusion on what phone I'd get. I'm not really looking to upgrade at the moment. Things are just getting interesting with this one.
I'm finally rooting my phone after months of messing about waiting for an unlock
My phone is international model i9300 and I've been reading this guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1695238
Looks really good, well detailed should be very easy with the help of chainfire!
But I've still got a few questions
1) I think I can't back up my phone until it's rooted to get access to the system files, am I right in thinking when I'm rooted I can use CWM to make a full back up of the phone?
2) Once it's rooted what is a thing that you must not do? The phone was expensive and as these threads may be annoying to all of you I just need to know before I do anything silly so apologies for all the topics
3) I'm going to wait until JB is released for official ROMs, when it comes to flashing a new ROM do I need to unroot the device?
4) Can I remove bloatware with just the standard root? The amount is ridiculous, it fills up 2 whole pages of apps and 95% of them I haven't used and don't plan on using, ever. I'm sure if I ever needed to there will be an app for it
5) any other advice on keeping my phone safe would be great, I am just really really cautious with this kind of stuff lol. Technology is really fussy I don't want to brick my phone
Thanks to everybody who posts, you guys have helped me so much since I joined and I really appreciate it

Answer 1: Check the link in my description (Win 8 -help) and download the adb executables. Then (Using Windows 7/8) Press and hold shift + Right mouse button in the folder and open cmd.
Once in cmd type:
Code:
adb start-server
adb devices (To check if your phone is connected properly)
adb backup -f %Userprofile%\Desktop\ADBackup\backup.ab -apk -nosystem -noshared -all
That will backup your user apps, incase you do do something wrong
Answer 2: Yes, there are a few things you shouldn't do;
Flash a ROM without making a backup
Deleting partitons in the phones' root.
Deleting system apps (APKs), when you don't know what they do, or even what they are.
Flashing a ROM/kernel, that wasn't made for your phone.
Overclocking/undervolting your phone too much.
And there are a couple more, but I don't want to waist your time ^^
Answer 3: JB is already released. No, you don't have to unroot your phone, before flashing. In fact, you probably can't, because you need the recovery program, to flash the ROM.
Answer 4: Don't flash bad stuff, don't install apps, that are reported (i.e. viruses) don't flash ROMs and kernels, that aren't for your device. And last but not least: Only use Odin, if you really have to!
Hope I could help!

1) You are right
2) Do not unroot
3) Official JB is already available. Flashing using odin doesn't required unroot. Update via OTA or kies required unroot.
4) Read, read and read is the best way to prevent bricking your device.

If you want a Jellybean rom with bloat removed, then download Checkrom http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1738527 . It's a stock samsung rom, bloat taken out, rooted, and is ready for if you wanted themeing etc..
In his kitchen app (that comes with the rom) you can find a package with ALL the removed bloat for you to download and install (ota) but he's also separated them so you can download just the ones you want. Also in the kitchen you will find tweaks for changing the notification drawer toggles, changing the theme, different modems, kernels etc... And check in the kitchen now and again for any updates to the rom (as and when samsung release them)
It's all there and very noob friendly. It's the smoothest most stable stock rom I've tried.
So root your phone using odin (easiest method by far), pay for titanium backup and back up your apps, boot into recovery and make a nandroid, move them onto you exSd or computer, wipe your phone, install checkrom, download titanium again and restore your apps from it.
That's a good start for you, EVERYTHING you need to know has been asked and answered before, so just google or search XDA, it's all still relevant, and you won't go wrong.
I'm going to root it now, seems pretty straight-forward but I'll let you know!
Now I will be shortly rooted what's the best anti-theft to use?
edit: wow... that was possible the easiest thing I have ever done lol, i was expecting it to be hard but it's literally selecting a file and pressing start. it's so much easier then jailbreaking (easy as hell but this tops it for sure)
Just done a CWM back up I didnt expect it to take so long haha
In my opinion, Cerberus is the best anti-theft app out there. You can use for a week as a free trial, I'll bet you're gonna buy it after 15 minutes.
Note that no anti-theft protection will prevent a thief from actually using your phone. Within like 2 minutes of Googling, the thief knows that he can use Download mode to overwrite the firmware (including the "anti theft" app) and 5 minutes later he has done it.
I use one such app (Watchdroid) to find my phone when I have misplaced it and for family members to be able to locate my position through an sms in case of personal distress.

i don't think a thief could do it themselves but any idiot can search keywords into google to find a solid result

Yes, but not everyone knows what the avast! symbol look like, do they? I doubt you're going to find an XDA-Member would have stolen your phone, it will probably be an Asi, or someone really retarded.
And anyways, they'll get frightened enough, when the phone rights junk to the SD, locks itself up and sounds the siren, with a personal "greeting"..
Give it a go, if your phone gets stolen, there's always the police, they'll (hopefully) help you But that's worst-case-scenario..

Anyone with google and the least bit of experience or interest will just reflash the stock Samsungrom anyway, rendering all and any (including Samsung's own) anti-theft utterly useless.
(In many cases thiefs steal to buy drugs, the dealer will certainly know someone to "freshen" up the phone.
It's very useful for finding the phone though if you have misplaced it =)

I don't see how it could be useful for finding a "misplaced" phone, what would you class as misplaced? If I left the phone under my bed or something and "misplaced" it surely avast! isn't going to show a picture of inside my house?
HI,
I want to be able to take mobile chip and pin payments. World pay (and a few others) have a solution for this however they do not work with rooted phones.
I have found this thread which is smiler and tried what they mentioned however it does not work.
You can download the app from here and have a play https://mobile.worldpay.com/app/
Does anyone have a work around for this?
Thanks
Mathew
Is there something I can do with my phone to allow this to work?
Has anyone be able to get the Worldpay app working on a Rooted phone?

Think I'm going to have to unroot my old DHD for Worldpay to work as I've just sold iphone4 (although was was jailbroken so would have been ruined going back to stock) and Nexus 4 is on its way so this will be wifes phone (which she will basically hardly ever use. Shame there isn't a work around, now I need to find out how to unroot
Unroot via SU app.

What a great idea!!! I had never thought of this so thanks for pointing it out.
Unfortunalty this did not work so I guess the application does not look at the root or it could be looking at a couple of things. Does anyone have a different idea?
Get root checker, maybe you're not rooted at all.

Got root checker and everything checks out. Any other ideas?
Iam gutted as I thought we had cracked it!
You can Always reflash.
SU full unroot should've worked tho.

When you say SU do you mean supper user?
Mathew
Yeap

Great I chose Temp Un Root is that correct?
Huh? You open SU app, go to preferences/settings and select full unroot.
Sent from the little guy
Interesting I open up SU I dont have a preferences option. However I do have an info option that allows me to temporally unroot the device,
Are we talking about different things
Just to let people know there is no way around this issue you have no chose but to go back to a stock ROM.
Watch video all links in the video description

Out of all the posts and topics on this subject. Why do you feel the need to make this thread besides taking up more space on the forum?
Probably because he took the time to make a nice little walk through video for people to follow. I personally see nothing wrong with this thread, it should be helpful to some people.

Because I havent seen a complete process put together yet on these steps. If you look in 10 different threads you can figure it out but a noob will never be able to do it without a step by step guide.

Agreed, there is just a mass of posts that you have to look through in each thread. But that's only because of the noobs, soon this thread will turn into the other threads. Not knocking you for the vid, it deff is a good idea to combine everything. But the new thread will most likely get overrun with the same questions and comments as the others.

you know, im not exactly a noob. but honestly, for the mj7 build i haven't seen an easy way to get root. So Tomsgt, thanks! It worked flawlessly! :good::good::good:
Great video, thanks. I know some still have concerns over vroot, which is kind of understandable.

Yeah I have had it on my computer for a couple weeks and havent had any problems. I have great virus software. Also by wiping the Chinese superuser off, I think there isnt much to worry about.

I know at least one mod had said something to the effect that vroot isn't welcome here in xDA--in one of the other root method threads--but I'm not sure how long ago that was, or if there's been a reversal on stance about links to vroot. Do with that info what you will.

^This. I looked at the root thread, then got referred to post #XXX, then followed that tutorial, hit a snag, troubleshot, etc. I hate thread jumping when I'm trying to figure something out. Thanks for the link, even if it is after I have already rooted haha.
Worked like a charm, man thanks. Much easier to follow with all the info in one place.
Security notice blocking Vroot
Tomsgt
I was able to successfully root following your YouTube video link using vroot on MJ7 and got the Chinese suoeruser.I verified I had root via Root Checker Basic. When I opened terminal emulator and entered the two line codes you posted, the phone rebooted and I lost root. I did not get SuperSU installed and every time I try to root again via Chinese Vroot the program states I rooted successfully with a blue check mark but the phone is not actually rooted. I downloaded Supersu manually but it is missing binaries. What am I doing wrong? I deleted user data and factory reset the phone from boot menu many times but still I get the same result.
I had not placed the phone in airplane mode initially so I don't know if that made a difference. Now when I try to vroot the phone, I get the security notice stating an attempt to access a secure area of the phone was blocked. Is there a work a round for this? I am really frustrated. All I want is to is to get free wifi tether with my unlimited data plan. If I can do that without root even better.
