Is it safe? - Vibrant Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Dear xda,
I have recently use the MOBILE-AP update.zip and flashed it to my phone. I am also rooted. I just recieved the software update. Is it safe to do it? If not, how do I restore to normal? Thank you!
Sent from my Samsung Vibrant using XDA App

Well first do you have clockwork recovery on there? And the update is a hit or miss. Some brick some don't. Its up to you although i recommend just using bionix or eugenes roms. There better than stock

So please let me know if its possible to root the stock j16? thanks in advance
Yep its possible mine is!

Yes its rootable just like the original firmware. I used the update.zip method to root it, never tried the one click version
Yup its possible. I rooted mine using the one click root.

JI6 is rootable. What's J16?
Sent from my Team Whiskey Powered Vibrant
J16 is the OTA update that was sent out over the last couple of weeks to fix a number of problems with the Galaxy S phones...in particular, the problem with the GPS not being able to lock onto satellites or function reliably in general. I have read some threads where a few folks who were rooted and then did the update messed up their phones.

Once you do you'll be happy you did and wonder why it took so long to get to that happy place =)
Easiest way is to download the TGA's One click root/unroot, then install ROM Manager, run Clockwork Recovery in ROM manager to download/install it for the 1st time, download a ROM from the Dev section (I like Bionix Fusion & Eugene's Vibrant Hybrid), and follow the instructions in the ROM's OP (select reboot into recovery yadda yadda yadda)....

[Q] ROOTED, but says it's not... WTF?!

Stock 2.2 Long story short, I rooted my Vibrant. Says it rooted, everything's fine. BUT
Busybox says it's not rooted, superuser is there.
Everything acts like it's rooted otherwise except ROM Manger doesn't ask for permission but won't boot into recovery.
Tried custom 3e recovery installer. When I try to reinstall packages it never goes into CWM recovery.
WTF?!?!
I don't think you can root 2.2. I have always found the best way is to Odin back to 2.1 and then use super one click root. Then install your customs roms or whatever from there.

Somebody better tell my phone that lol. I had 2.2 rooted previously
got it. disregard

You can root 2.2 I did it but did you power down your phone after root... it needs to reboot as far as cwm you cant use it on 2.2... 3e is cool but alot of people have problems with it... Odin to stock 2.1 its easier...

How did you get it to work? I am having the same problems as you described.
run superoneclick and reboot phone afterwards. You must reboot for it to work.

2.1 -> 2.2 Error!

how's it going guys.
My Fascinate sometimes pops up with a blue/red screen saying that an update is available. Every time when I confirm it, it reboots but says it can't be completed because of an error or something. I rooted the phone, installed ClockworkMod and that's it. Erased all the unnecessary stock apps that comes with the phone. What's the problem?
You erased all the stock apps.
You have CWM.

ah! ok ok. now will this be a problem still if I decide to update the firmware manually?
you can update to froyo with cwm by flashing a rom

yes I believe if you are running a rooted rom you cannot receive OTA updates.. however you can still do what was mentioned in the last post and use odin to put froyo on yourself, there's even debloated/deodexed packages so you don't have to do much work removing anything, but of course most of them will root your phone so still no OTA updates

Is there a tutorial on how to root G-Tab 10.1 3G with Honeycomb 3.2?

I did google that and all tutorials I found were for the WiFi version. I have honeycomb 3.2 installed. I have another question, after rooting, will I still be able to get notified of new official updates through Kies?
Thanks in advance!

Flash via CWM. Also why Kies? Kies is horrible, very poor support from Kies.

DOUBLE DITTOS! Couldn't be more correct!
If you can read this it was sent using my GT-P7510.
Is there a different rooting file for the 3G version? Could you please provide a link for the rooting and unrooting files?
Thanks!
No, it's all the same. File is attached.
Thanks a lot!
I must have CWM recovery installed, or I can do it over stock recovery?

No. Stock only accepts Google signed files. Rooting is not part of Googles "master plan"

Yeap you will, there is just one problem. Kies is region bound, so where EU gets official ICS update, and you live somewhere in the middle east? You won't get the update till there is an arabic/regional firmware released via kies.

As he said it will be no problem I personally updated to 3.2 while i was rooted with no problems

Only problem is, updating via Kies makes you lose your root.
***EDIT***
Nevermind Thanks... I found a really simple tutorial. Sorry for the dumb question...
Hi,
So I have the Galaxy Tab 10.1 GT-P7500R (R is for Rogers Canada version) and it states that it is a 4G device but NOT LTE - only HSPA+ so not REAL 4G but thats what the box says anyways... Lol.
Can I use this file to root my tab? Do I place the .zip on the root of my SD card and then just flash from STOCK recovery or is this an ODIN file?
Also... Once rooted, how do I get CWM? Do I just need to D/L the Rom Manager app from the market and flash recovery from there?
Please advise and sorry for all the questions. I have rooted my old SGS, my SGSII and my Galaxy Nexus (among others) using different methods and I just want to ensure this is done right the FIRST time with no problems.
Thanks in advance...
I would suggest you do a backup before you flash the recovery, I havent heard many with the Roger's tablet.

I have already successfully rooted and flashed CWM with ROM Manager and everything is working like a charm.
The Rogers version of the tablet is marketed as a 4G (even says so when I have my SIM card in) but it is NOT an LTE device so really it is a GLORIFIED 3G/3.5G device.
I followed all steps I found to root the 3G model and voila... ROOTY TOOTY GOODNESS!!! Lol.
It is quite confusing so I hope a MOD can make a sticky somewhere to keep Rogers Tab owners from flashing the WRONG root files and such.
To flash the rooting file, can I go into recovery then choose update from a file and that's it? Or do I have to go through long tutorials?

Would you like to share how you rooted? I have a P7500 Swedish version (P7500XWLB1) ; running 3.2 or 3.23 (latest version). I have access to that rom if somethings fail. But SuperOneClick does not work and I just want to be able to rot and unrot. How do I manage that without CM and stuff like that?
I have not found a post or guide to rot and unrot the latest version, most guides are for 3.1, and I also would like to be able to unrot so I can use Kies once it comes.

Unroot S3 for Kies update

Hello guys,
I just started playing around with Android/ROMs/etc so forgive me in advance for what probably is a noobish question..
I rooted my i9300 using CF Root, and then tried a few ROMS.
Although, for the time being i decided to stick to the stock. Had it restored through CWM backup/restore function (Nan I believe).
But now, when I try to update it through Kies it says that the firmware version is not compatible.
I checked around and I've seen that I could flash the stock ROM and it would fix, although I would lose everything i have right now.
Wouldn't "unrooting" fix my problem? I mean, from what i can figure out, it's just copying cache.img and recovery.img to my 'boot'?
If so, wouldn't just putting back the stock files 'deceive' to update it?
Thanks a lot!!!

Use triangle away to reset counter, flash an unrooted stock Rom, do a factory reset, that should be or. You will be unroted and original status. Please correct me if I am wrong. There are also a lot of how guides here in the forum and on YouTube!

It was a great idea. Just did that, but apparently the firmware is still not compatible..
I also still see the CWM app in my app list..
Actually, rooting shouldn't interfere with updating via Kies, only OTA. That's what I read. Do you have the correct firmware region?
well its the one that came with the phone, so should be right.
would the cwm cause this? could i put back the original recover
