ODIN won't pick up vibrant in download mode - Vibrant Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey everyone-
I'm trying to ODIN my vibrant back to stock from eugene373's froyo rom, the one with latest one (r3 i think) with the supposedly working clockwork mod (it didn't for me :-/). Anyway, I'm able to get the phone into download mode ONLY by pushing power on and holding volume -, I've already tried turning it off and plugging in the cable and it doesn't work for some reason, but whenever it enters download mode ODIN doesn't seem to pick it up. Oddly enough, ODIN will pick up my vibrant as COM6 when it's powered on, but that's only time I can get it to work. And my vibrant IS NOT hardware locked. Thanks for any help in advance.

Just FYI check to make sure, you swtich USB ports on the PC and also make sure you have all the right drivers installed. Looking at the pics, I see that you are not selecting the rite options. All you need is the PIT & the PDA files selected.

yeah I tried that to, didn't work. I used the very first JFD firmware from the backup firmware thread and the .512 pit file as well and that was it, and for some reason ODIN still wouldn't pick up my vibrant. fyi, i was actually able to get it to flash to an odin copy of JI8 a couple hours ago, but now I keep getting a bunch of FC's and ODIN yet again isn't sensing the vibrant in download mode.

Sorry to break it to you but its most likely an issue with your computer. Try going to the local library and use one of theirs.

Try getting into download mode first than starting up Odin. If that doesn't work try it in reverse.

Just my .02, but I noticed that if I have Kies open, Odin wont see my Vibrant... Dont know if that is the cause of your problem or that you even have Kies at all.

I'm going to go with make sure you have the correct drivers installed.
If you don't have the drivers
Hit up this thread for the drivers.

Sometimes odin doesn't recognize my phone and I unplug the usb and plug it back in and it pops up..do this while still in download mode and odin open..

Agreed. I have to do this every time, but it also works every time. As soon as I plug the USB back in Odin will show a com port has been connected, and then I'm good to go with the flashing. I'm using Windows 7 64 bit.

I have also had success with this method. Closing odin and reopening before I re plug is what I have done and have had no issues. Vista Ultimate 64.

I need help. My vibrant is soft bricked. I can access 2e recovery but cannot get into CWM at all. I dont even have the update.zip in my internal. I can get into download mode but odin will not recognize my device. (believe me when I tell you Ive tried it all on multiple computers using different cables, usb slots, etc.). I actually fell asleep at my desk last night trying it all. My question is, can I somehow access the internal storage of my vibrant through my pc possibly ? In order to place the cwm update.zip in the root folder then enabling me to "reinstall packages" through 2e recovery ?
Any help is much appreciated. This is killing me.

I gotta get my phone on a charger, so will have to wait and search for the post in a little while, but another person had this issue, and had luck with a windows software that was like an android file explorer or something. Was able to save all his pictures and files. Surely you could also use it to transfer update.zip back to the internal sd.
I will look for that post and get back to you.
Update: this is the thread I was referring to. Hope this helps. I haven't used it, but if it can copy files from the internal, theres the chance it will copy files TO the internal... Good luck!

I can never get ODIN to recognize my phone on Windows7. I always have to use my old PC running XP. Also other devices being plugged into the PC have been known to bork up ODIN.

REPARTITIONING ISSUE WITH HEIMDALL 1.3.0
Heimdall currently has an issue with repartitioning. 99% of the time you will not need to repartition. Failure to follow these directions can possibly lead to bricking:
Do not flash bootloaders if you see this message:
Local and device PIT files don't match and repartition wasn't specified!
This message means your partition tables do not match the firmware.
You will need to use Linux to repartition with this firmware package. Install Ubuntu. In Linux, you can copy-pasta this into the terminal to correct the repartitioning problem and then flash bootloaders. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=17485056&postcount=23

How do I take my Vibrant that has Bionix on it and return it to factory set, as in when i got it in the box? The whole ODIN isn't working for me. I have the drivers installed on my comp, but when i turn the phone off, it doesn't recognize it. :/
Just find a stock flashable file and flash it through clockwork
U can either keep trying cuz odins a ***** sometimes or try heimdall. I gotta try 5 to 6 times for my laptop to recognize my phone and its drivers. Personally ive never used heimdall but heard its more consistant than odin
Currently running ______________! (<----Insert Rom Name Here)
I can't seem to find one. :/
I would need the stock kernel either?
I have been searching for days.
What do you mean when you turn the phone off? It has to be in download mode in order for it to work, and of that's what you meant and its not being recognized by windows then let me know. I can help you with that.
Sent from my SGH-T959V using Tapatalk
I turn it off to enter download mode (Sorry if i was a bit unclear) I have installed the drivers and it hasn't worked. :/
You doing this on windows? And is it safe to assume you have all the files you need for Odin already? (tar and pit files)
Correct, I followed the guide that was posted and it didn't recognize the fact that I was in download mode on odin. It said that it completed 0/0 threads.
Reboot machine
Right click the Odin shortcut and "run as administrator"
Plug the USB cord into the computer
Remove the battery from your phone, and then plug the USB cord into the phone.
Put the battery back into the phone, and you should then be in download mode.
Those steps worked for me bc like you I was having huge issues getting my pc to recognize the phone. Let me know if that doesnt work.
Also, make sure your Windows Device Manager doesnt have an issue with your phone. Once you open it, it should jump out at you if you do.
If odin isn't working for you, you could use the alternative, Heimdall. The vibrant bible tells you all you need to know. good luck.

[q] help bricked my galaxy s2

I'm screwed! I was installing
MODEM_I9100XXKE4_REV_02_CL1009835.tar.md5
CODE_I9100XWKE7_CL215725_REV02_user_low.tar.md5
GT-I9100-CSC-XEUKD1.tar
and something happened in Odin3 and it froze, so I took the battery out and tried to restart it and now all I get is a blue and yellow screen that says Android System Recovery. I don't have anything backed up on the device, it didn't come with a microSD card, and it now says
Deleting Cryption Meta Data
-Copying media files....
#manual mode#
updating application....
applying multi-CSC
and that's it. When I hit reboot phone all I get is a screen with a triangle and an android symbol and when I hit apply update from sd card, same symbol, even when I tried to put a .TAR file on my dad's EVO microSD card and put it into the galaxy.
Also, now the USB cable doesn't recognize my phone for some reason so when I go back to ODIN mode it says
Product name - GT-i9100
Custom Binary Download - Yes (1 count)
Current Binary Samsung Official
When I try to restart the phone, it goes straight to the android recovery screen mentioned above, where I can't do anything, and then when I get into the Odin mode, it won't recognize the usb cable so I can link up to Odin3 V1.83 on the computer. Also tried the usb cable on other computers didn't find my phone. Also, as of right now it's not rooted, but I was in the process of rooting, when I realized I missed the Over the Air step so when I Odin3 an insecure.TAR file the WIFI was broke so S2 Root kept saying can't find usb connection even though it was connected, and somewhere along the line when I was trying to restore the radio's by installing the 3 files above, when it crashed something messed up? Now I can't do anything. PLEASE HELP
SO I AM STUCK! Please help????????

I know this topic is old, but I am essentially having the same problem, I don't think it was really solved for the first guy, he can't flash the original rom using odin, because odin doesn't recognize his phone. And that is my issue too, I'm able to get into download mode/odin mode whatever, I plug in the usb cable, nothing, odin doesn't recognize it, I don't get a little sound like I do when I usually plug in a usb cable. Please any ideas would be appreciated.

Try different versions of Odin (for example, if you're using V4, try V3 1.3 & V3 1.85 and vice versa), try different USB ports (particularly if you're using a port attached to a hub. You need to use a powered port), different USB cables & finally different PC's/different versions of Windoze if you need to.
Also, when you fire up Odin, check Task Manager in Windoze & make absolutely certain Kies or any processes associated with it (if you're not sure what these are, Google/search for them) are not running at the same time. As I've said, you need the drivers that come with Kies to use Odin, but Odin won't work if Kies or anything associated with it is running at the same time.
Try uninstalling Kies on your PC (you need the drivers that come with Kies for Odin to work), rebooting, reinstalling Kies (search for it), rebooting.
If none of that works try cleaning the USB socket of the phone a Q-tip (cotton bud) & some isopropyl alcohol. And if that doesn't work, it might be a case of the USB circuitry of the phone being shot (unless you haven't tried the above steps or are not following the right steps, which we'll never know because we're not there with you).
Was also having the same problem. I managed to get round it by flashing an I9100 package with all the files (PDA, PHONE, BOOT, CSC, PIT) and ticking re-partition. If I'm right, this completely wipes the phone and flashes this over, basically leaving you on a fresh slate.
Hope I helped!

Using PIT files is not recommended more brick a phone by flashing PIT than rescue it .

I have been able to do this on my wife's phone pretty easy and all I do it find a copy if CWM recovery (often called CWM all), a copy of update.zip, and the latest version if Odin. Use your factory USB cord and plug your phone into your PC. Let it install all the drivers. Once I stalled open your phone and mount the SD card so you can see it as a hard drive. Place the update.zip file on the SD card, but not in any folder. From there unhook your phone and power it down. Remove the battery and start Odin. Plug your USB part of the phone cord into the PC (don't connect it to the phone yet). Hold down the volume down button and power button while connecting the phone cord to the phone. You will see a yellow triangle and Droid on the screen. From there click the PDA button and find the CWM file you downloaded. Click start and let it do its thing. The phone will power down and you can then replace the battery and start your phone. I usually let my phone power up and then power it down again. After it is off you will then need to hold the volume up, volume down, and power button to boot into recovery. Once in Recovery you can choose the option to install update.zip. Let it do its thing and then reboot the phone. You should be good to go.

Hi Guys-
I'm having a problem with my Samsung Fascinate as well. Its currently running Gingerbread 2.3.5 build EH03. I had my phone flashed to MetroPCS a couple of days ago with Talk/Text only. Now I'm trying to root my phone using Odin. I want to install CyanogenMod, because I ran it on my old HTC Hero and was satisfied with it.
The problem is that my phone will not mount as a USB Storage. I'm using a Mac, however I have Parallels running Windows XP SP3. I have installed the Samsung drivers from the Samsung website and the drivers do show up in the device manager, but it still doesn't mount as a USB storage device in Windows. On the phone I receive the notification that its USB Connected - select to copy files to/from your computer. But, again nothing happens when I select it.
Whenever I plug my phone in the USB port Odin recognizes it, but when I put the phone into download mode it doesn't show up in Odin. I've also tried to see if it shows up using ADB from the Android SDK. Its not listed as a device when I run the command adb devices.
Is there anyway to root the phone if its not showing up in Odin when its download mode?

I think you can root the phone without having to flash CWM recovery, but it does require ADB so I don't know if that would be any help. FWIW, I have a mac too, and haven't had any luck using heimdall (it doesn't recognize the device), although I haven't tried any sort of VM or anything like crossover to use odin on it. I've just accepted using a windows machine when odin is required
Does your ADB work with other devices? For whatever reason, I couldn't get it working with the fascinate, then I tried it a few days ago and it worked all of a sudden. Another workaround is to use the wirelessADB app from the market. If you search for "galaxy s mac" you'll see that you're unfortunately definitely not alone in having connectivity issues with OSX.

very true...ADB is another option to root, but I never recomend it because most folks will have trouble using it....dont mean the in a condescending way, just sayin.
For sure, just thought I would throw it out there. Looks fairly simple actually from the guide nitsuj17 posted in the OP of the EH03 odin/heimdall package, well maybe straightforward would be a better word, just since it's laid out step-by-step.
I actually had problems using cwm... it failed to flash the su.zip properly. So I used the latest version of GeeWiz recovery on stock EH03. Worked fine. Roots every time. #hopethathelps

cant install roms
Hi, guys new to rooting and custom roms but ive hit a snag.
I have acheived root by using section 5 here (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1238070)
but i cannot install any roms all i get when i select the zip file is a screen that shows the unpacking then it goes to a triangle with an exclamation point. then reboots into normal android loosing everything i had installed. i made a backup using rom manager but it has dissapeared so now i have nothing to lose. can anyoone help.
all i want to be able to do is put ics with very few apps and overclock my cpu
Any help would be great
Samsung fascinate running android2.3.5 with superuser
thx
1. You don't need to be root first before flashing roms.
2. It sounds like you're possibly booting into the stock recovery.
If you want to flash ICS, just follow the steps in that section 3 of the guide you've already been using.
I tried but it failed on step 9/10
So you're saying that it fails after you press start in odin (flashing the stock EH03 package)? What error are you getting and when exactly is it happening?
If you're not on any rom and just on stock EH03, I'd think you should be able to just odin the CWM recovery and install ICS from there.
not sure what the exact message was but yes after i hit start it initalized did nothing for about 3 minutes of the five and got a fail message
And you're sure you're using the correct files and selecting the right things in odin? Make sure the stock EH03 rom is in the PDA section, the atlas 2.2 file for PIT, and repartition is checked. Could possibly be a bad download too, I'd maybe try redownloading the files and trying again. Also, are you using Odin 1.3 that was linked in the guide?
Alternatively, you could just try flashing the CWM4 fixed for CM7 in odin, then three-finger into recovery and flash ICS from there.
Oh and just making sure you're getting into download mode the right way, I personally pull the battery, that way it doesn't reboot after you flash whatever it is you're flashing. If none of that works, I'd try a different USB port/cable. Is odin recognizing the device properly?

[Q] your smarter, help plz

ok guys, first things first. YES i did search, i read threads for hours. So if your just gonna come to bash on me... get off it.
So i had a bad flash, oh no. Phone was stuck in a bootloop, got it to download mode and put it thru odin. Well odin said FAILED. now i can still get into DL mode but its no longer a bootloop, now its a lil picture of a phone linked to a computer when i turn it on.
SO heres the prob, i can get into DL mode, but odin refuses to recognize my phone. Ive tried other usb ports, other cords, unistalled and reinstalled odin and the drivers. USB debugging is off says aio toolbox. So what do i do now? any suggestions im not thinking of?
Any help is greatly appreciated and will b thanked. =)
Phone to PC screen still should be able to flash through.
Have you tried a different computer? One that your phone has never been in contact with?
What was the FAILED error when you tried to ODIN initially?
Can you get into recovery by chance?
i have tried a different computer, but not one it has never been on b4.
And toast, i actually dont know if i can get into recovery. Im about to look up how and try that

Gingerbread bootloader uses this combo:
For Recovery - Lower Volume Key + Power Button
For Download - Upper Volume Key + Power Button
If you have Froyo bootloader:
For Recovery - Both Volume Keys + Power Button
For Download - Both Volume Keys and Connect USB Cable
alright, i can use the hardware buttons to get into download just fine. But when i try to get into recovery it only gives me the Phone -- ! -- Computer icon. ITs getting annoying lol
Ok. I didn't figure that would work, but it wasn't going to hurt anything to try do you have any friends with Macs? You could try it on one of them with Heimdall. That would be another option to try.
Also, check out this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=8149503
Read all the posts, there is some good stuff in there.
+1 on recommended thread. It sounds just like your issue. Definitely try the Heimdall AIO one click t959 for Windows.

Google eugenes froyo that does not brick, read the op carefully, because after you odin the tar file, you will have an error message, thats ok, odin eclair and you should pass.
Read it 10 times, you'll reboot in cwm with an error message, ok, reboot, download, eclair.
stupid question sorry, but do you have sdk platform tools installed?
im not sure. i downloaded something called sdk manager, but it closes the moment u open it.
SDK platform tools is a large program, But if your computer has recognized your phone up till now, you probly have the right drivers, by the way have you cleaned your usb port? toothbrush and an electronics cleaner or alcohol very lightly, never know.
ok guys. heres the update. I tried all the links you guys have kindly tossed my way. nothin. You are putting your phone into download mode before using odin right? You must have your phone in download mode for odin to recognize it. I'm guessing you have done this but I wasn't sure after reading through this thread, hope you get up and running again.

Ok, I just went through this over the past weekend with a spare Vibe that I have. Odin would not recognize it at all for my. I would here the Ding and then nothing. No yellow COM box, no driver installation, nothing.
Here is what I did:
First I went into Device Manager and with the phone plugged in (needs to be plugged in so you can see the yellow!), I uninstalled everything with Samsung's name tagged to it (including my SGS3 and SGS2 drivers).
Then I went here and downloaded and installed Heimdall (take note that you have to make sure that libusb-1.0 is correctly installed). There is an exe file in there (might be in the Heimdall thread here in the Vibe section), that allows you to update the drivers. That is where you would replace the Windows with libusb-1.0.
Then I plugged in my USB to PC and to phone and put it in Download mode. Nothing. So I left it plugged into the phone still but unplugged from PC and move ports. I have 3 ports and believe it or not, the one farthest from the power source/MB was the one that work. As soon as I plugged it in, I heard the Ding and saw the box pull up auto-installing the drivers.
After that, I went to Utilities in Heimdall to make sure detected. It was and I flashed Mr_Psycho's package (no pun intended ) via the normal Heimdall instructions.
Believe me, I have spent a ton of time on this and troubleshooted everything from dead USB to dead motherboard. It was a real PITA.
Edit:: If you need any of the files, Heimdall version or Drivers, just PM me and I will send them to you. You are not Bricked, just your PC's vision is clouded a bit.
woodrube i greatly appreciate the mass amount of help. i will try all the above as soon as im home and report back to u
alright, i deleted everything, reinstalled, tried heimdall still nothing. I am in download mode but laptop wont recognize anything. it says the correct drivers are installed but then says usb device not recognized, this is killing me as i need my phone imma post a video tonight of what im doing, hopefully someone sees im doing something wrong

[Q] Galaxy Player 5 Int'l bricked

Hi everyone, I understand and accept my noob status, but I have searched high and low and can't find my answer.
My SGP has been bricked for about a month now, and I have no idea what I need to do to fix it. It's the international player with the hardware button. When I bought it, the guy who sold it said it was from Peru, and it had a custom start-up animation. I wanted to get rid of that, so I started trying to flash things before I really understood what I was doing.
I had it rooted, so that was a good first step, but it collapsed from there. I've been using Odin to try to fix things.
The player will not start up at all on its own. At one point it did, but went into a bootloop. I don't have linux and windows on the same computer, so what I do is, I plug the player into a powered usb hub, and connect it to my linux machine. I have unbrickable on there, so I run that and it gets it to the download screen, except the download screen isn't centered, it's off to the side a bit. Then I unplug the cable that runs between the hub and the laptop, and plug that into my windows machine, and try to flash with Odin.
I've been trying to put a new kernel, new rom, everything on there, but I confess I just don't know what's wrong and what I need. Odin seems to connect fine, and the green bar fills part or most of the way, and then just stops. I never get any sort of "successful" message from Odin.
So please please please help me, folks. I've tried to provide as much detail as I can, but just ask if you have any questions. I'm here to learn and thanks in advance for your help.
Did you try flashing the stock firmware through odin 1.7?

Yes, several times. Odin hangs. I've tried flashing the md5.tar file both with and without the .pit file, and it always hangs.

what about rj's kernel?
That's another thing I guess I'm a little fuzzy on. Can I flash just a kernel? Do I put that in the "PDA" window in Odin? I can't remember if or how I tried that before but can give it a shot.

Yes, you can flash just a kernel. I've done it on my USA 5.0 multiple times. Use the PDA window, as you already stated. Be sure to double check and make sure you have the correct kernel before flashing (I'm pretty sure rj's kernel is the right one).
Let us know how it goes! :fingers-crossed:

Tried it twice, and it failed both times. Is it a concern that the Download Mode screen isn't centered?

This is going to sound silly, but have you tried re-installing the drivers on your computer for your Player? I had a similar issue with my Nexus 7 once (I believe I was flashing back to stock). Something wonky had happened laptop-side, and I had to re-install the driver before it would even recognized that I had connected my N7. Be sure to connect directly; don't use a hub. Also, are you using a USB 3.0 port, or a 2.0 port? I've read that that can cause issues too.....
Hope that helps. Let us know if it doesn't. Don't give up the fight!
try odin 1.85. i tried this just now (had a bootloop) and got stock firmware flashed. also make sure u are using the samsung cable.
also, can you get into recovery?
Yes, I have reinstalled drivers. I'm using a USB 2.0 port. Just downloaded Odin 1.85 and will try with that.
I never got a Samsung cable b/c I bought the thing used. I've been using the powered hub b/c I don't have linux and windows on the same computer. The unit is completely unresponsive normally; I can get it to download mode with Unbrickable (which, from what I've read, only works on linux). So once I do that, then I unplug the linux computer and plug to the windows computer for Odin (which, from what I've read, only works on windows).
I have Heimdall on my linux computer, but read that it doesn't work on Galaxy Players. So unless there's some way to do everything on only linux or only windows, I have to have the powered hub to keep the Download Mode screen on. The linux machine is an old netbook and is too weak to run Wine BTW.
Is there anything I'm missing or incorrect? Because the alternative is to install linux on my windows machine, which I just upgraded to 8, and I don't even like/know how to use that very much.

On your windows 8 machine, does ADB recognize your device when it's plugged in? (Command Prompt, type: adb devices)
Also, can you get your device into recovery mode (not download mode)? Do you have CWM installed/flashed?

adb wasn't a recognized command by windows. The computer sees the device in Control Panel, but it sees it as "SEC 5Spc110 Test B/D" and won't let me attach a driver to it. I point it at the folder where the drivers are, and windows says it can't find the drivers.
Enraging.
Edit: I'm not certain but I don't think I got CWM to work before all this went on. I cannot get to recovery mode.

To get adb working in command prompt, use these instructions here: http://www.redmondpie.com/how-to-set-up-android-adb-and-fastboot-on-windows-tutorial/
If you shutdown your Player, can you boot into recovery? There's a button combo you are supposed to use (Power, volume up, home button I think), but I have no idea what the combo is. At school, so I can't look it up.

Heimdall does on fact work quite well on the galaxy player 5. If you're keen to use the command line, extract the kernel from any zip or tar and do a 'heimdall flash --kernel /path/to/kernel'. If that works, I can give you further instructions on fixing your bootloaders.
And being offset does not affect download mode functionality.

If the resurrector detects it, it has broken bootloaders, so no recovery.

Ok, got out my netbook and took at stab at it with Heimdall. I'm a little fuzzy with how to use it, but tried flashing with a stock package that I had, which included a kernel. I got an error message that it failed to send end session packet, and on the bottom it says "Failed to confirm end of file transfer sequence".
So, what specific files should I be putting where? On the first tab, I can load a firmware package, and that fills in the PIT section on the "Flash" tab in Heimdall. Is that correct? Does it matter what type of file I select for the Heimdall Firmware Package?
On the "Flash" tab, should I have the "Repartition" and "No Reboot" boxes picked?
Anything I'm doing wrong or can change to get this end session packet problem solved?
Thanks everyone for all the help so far!

Download the bootloader tar from the hard brick recovery thread, and the appropriate PIT file. Then flash the tar, and check repartition and use the downloaded PIT. If that works, you should be able to get to download mode normally.
