What are the pros/cons of these different options? Trying to decide which to set up.
Also, is it easy to switch back and forth if I find I don't like one or the other?

To answer your second question. Yes it is easy to switch back and forth.
as for Pros and cons. They both are pretty much the same.
I use Google Voice because of the customized greetings. That outweighs (for me) any other voicemail system, because I use my phone for business as well as personal.
I just used conditional forwarding to always forward to google voice voicemail, and forgot completely about T-Mobile voicemail.
I tried to configure GV, but when going through the setup wizard I skipped the voicemail setup, as I wasn't sure what I wanted to do. Now I can't figure out how to re-run the setup wizard.
Is there a way to re-run the setup wizard so I can set up voicemail?
If not, is there a way to do it manually and can you point me to instructions?
Thanks!

What if you have AT&T Vociemail? Has anyone figured out how to setup their visual voicemail on an unlocked Vibrant?

use google voice. You can set everything up on Google's website. Also, you can use the website to check your voice mail and text if you ever forgot your phone at home or battery dies.
Google voice has more customizations.
Not to mention transcription.

i used visual voicemail for a while and didnt like it. It was cool to be able to see the voicemail and be able to just delete it but when you tryed to listen to it it was really quiet and sounded like someone talking down a long hall.
trying google voice now.
I've been using a combination of PhoneFusion and GV ever since my MyTouch3G. PF is for my friends, family. Business and the rest go to GV. A big plus with PF is that people can fax to my number and PF will email the fax to me or I can view it as a pdf on the phone. I can also log into their website to see/hear/save (as MP3) the voicemails. You should check it out...it's free and a very solid product.

Just log into the website, choose settings, and choose GV voicemail. It will give you instructions on how to do it manually.
Basically, you dial *#0041XXXXXXXXXX# to set up conditional call forwarding to your phone number. XXX is your phone number.

So I've used google voice on my past phones, but for some reason whenever I get a voicemail on the Thunderbolt, it goes to my verizon account voicemail. I have changed it to default to google voice in the setting under call, I have set up my google voice like before. I'm not sure what else to do. I've uninstalled, changed the settings and everything like a million times too. Anyone know what I'm doing wrong? Thanks.
Verizon handles voicemail a bit differently. With GV you were able to set up voicemail automatically on some carriers, but for Verizon, you have to do an extra step.
Dial *71<Your Google Voice Number> and press Call. You'll hear a series of beeps and now phonecalls that go to voicemail will go to GV now.
Okay. I'll try that. Now when I switch ROMs and wipe my phone do I have to do that every time then?
Atrix4G Rooted!
Now it says please enter the number you wish to dial followed by the # sign whenever someone calls me...so I don't think it worked lol.
Atrix4G Rooted!
nevermind.
I'm having the same issue. Did you find a solution?
Call vzw there's a few other numbers you can dial I think but I can't remember them
I used *71(GV number), *90(GV number), and *92(GV number) and everything works fine. There was another thread on this a few days ago.
Ya that's them
*71 and *90 are redundant. *71 is no answer/busy forwarding (both conditions), *90 is BUSY only forwarding, so if you're using *71, *90 isn't necessary.
*92 not sure what that's supposed to do, it's not quickly found on VZW's website.
Additionally, apparently call forwarding (conditional) behavior is not the same in every VZW market. Go figure.
What about visual voicemail? It works with the Google voice app, but it does not show up under the "messaging" visual voice, even though I set it in settings to goole voice and not carier. Any ideas?

The stock Visual Voicemail app will NOT work with messages on Google Voice. They are two separate applications that cannot be linked.
Just check your messages in GVoice. Yes, this means you can't use the home screen messaging widget for voicemail, but such is life when using Google Voice.
Remember, using Google Voice takes away revenue from the carrier, since you aren't paying for their voicemail service. So they have no incentive to provide native support for it. You're pretty much on your own when you switch to GVoice.

Cool. God to know. Its not a big deal to use the Voice widget, I was just curious if I was maybe missing a setting. So its a limitation imposed by Verizon and not HTC if I read your comments correctly? Which means with a proper rom in the future I should be able to use the feature?
Your Gv voicemails are on a completely different system. I don't think it will be possible to use the built in vvm app for that ever.
Then why would they put it as an option under the Settings/Call/Voicemail options? I am not saying I don't believe you, it just seems odd to include it as an option for provider, then not use it in the app.
Oh I guess you can then. Surprise to me.
Oh wait you're talking about the phone settings. That's nothing to do with the vvm app. Thats just telling your phone what number to dial when you hold 1.
The gv app adds that option when you install it.
I installed Google Voice and didn't read the app carefully. I selected the Sprint integration and now when I answer a call it asks me to press 1 to accept the call. I cleared the data in app manager and re-ran the app the correct way without sprint integration but it still asks me to press 1 when answering a call. Does anyone know how to fix this? Thanks!

Turn off call screening
This isn't specific to the 3D.
It's been a pain for about a week - since Sprint and GV launched the integration service.
The integration does more than make you press 1...
It prevents you from using ANY txt app BUT Google Voice, and reduces your 2 numbers to ONLY your google voice number...
OR
If you select to use your Sprint number, YOU MAY LOOSE YOUR GOOGLE VOICE NUMBER AFTER 30 DAYS!
Rather than turning off call screening (unless you want to, but it doesn't sound like your GV# was your primary number before), you should log into GV on your computer, go to Settings -> Phones, and Deactivate your 3D.
Google Voice will still be enabled for Voice mail after you do this, but it won't infiltrate and take over everything.
You can then go back to forwarding your GV# to whatever phones you like - and hopefully keep it if you chose to use your Sprint # on the phone.

I disagree with what you're saying here. First off you can easily use any text app you want. You just need to make sure you turn on the notify you via text option in Google Voice. Secondly I like having my Sprint number through my Google voice account so that way I can apply my Google Voice rules while still getting my free Mobile to mobile and not having to give anyone else a new number.
Secondly if you want to keep another google voice number, it's only a $20 one time charge.
Thirdly you know how great it is to answer my cell phone number from my computer whenever I have google talk open. Plus I have a Obi110 hooked up to a cordless phone so at home I have VOIP on my Cell phone number. My friends and family have no clue where I'm calling from because it always shows my cell phone number.
Google voice is a blessing if you know how to use it.
It's a headache if you don't though.
Read up on the services features before deciding if you want to use them. I love G-Voice but you need to understand theres one negative aspect of it.
No picture mail/mms services are allowed when you integrate. you'll have to resort to emailing attachments or facebooking or whatever you do to get your content across the waves.
I have not integrated. Right now calls to canada are free with gv but very expensive with sprint. If I integrate one way or another will I end up paying sprints rate or will it be free because of gv?

Once you integrate international calling is through Google Voice. I don't know if they mention Canada but I know for a fact they handle all your other international calling.
Best i could find on international from the man handling this himself http://www.google.com/support/forum...0e&hl=en&fid=5122d9657099fe0e000479f1f8d2bae2
dont mean to hi-jack, i meant to create a separate thread but saw this one and instead of creating another thread, i'll just post here since its related to google voice. I went onto the google voice forum and sprint forum but no one can help me.
when trying to set up google voice, i'm getting an error message saying "your phone number could not be verified. please try again"
i tried re-adding my number and it says "this number is already in use as a cell phone on another google voice account" which is probably why i'm getting an error message on my phone saying it cant verifiy my number.
I also tried clicking on Change/Port in voice settings and going to "Use your Sprint mobile number with Google Voice" and i got an error. i think my account just needs to be reset or something?
I have a question, here is the scenario:
I have Google Voice(GV) and Sprint numbers.
I also have 3 unlimited numbers in my sprint phone.
I added my GV number to one of those three so all the calls I recieve from GV are free.
I can also use the call back function on GV to make calls for free since my sprint phone sees this as an incoming call from GV.
My question is:
If I integrate keeping my Sprint number as the primary, meaning all the calls I make from GV will show the Sprint phone number. What will I see in the caller ID when I make a call from GV's website?
Thanks.

Your Sprint phone will show up in that case. For your situation it doesn't sound like you'd want to integrate. It would save you minutes if you do a lot of your talking at home and can setup a obi100 or obi110 box to make outbound and inbound calls on your gv account.
Edit: My bad it shows up as anonymous if you initiate the call from your google voice page. Then again at home I'm using the obi110 I have with a cordless phone or my google talk dialing out as my cell phone number.

Go to the Voice settings on a non-mobile browser and mess around with things that make sense to change. I did that and now I have normal texting back and I am back to using GV just for voicemail like I like to do.

yes, you can use any messaging app. i use handcent. under google voice app settings after integrating, you go to
>sync and notications.
check "Text Messages"
uncheck "Inbox notifcations"
now you can use just your stock app, or any other app. if you use a different app, make sure you turn off the notification bar in the stock apps settings.
you will still receive a message in your google voice app if you open it. it will remain there, even if you delete the message in one of the other apps. good for keeping records of texts that you dont want to keep stored locally on the phone. i generally go in to google voice on the computer and delete what i dont want.
is it an extra step, sure. but look at this method, as an automatic backup system for your texts.

I purchased "Backup to Gmail" about a month ago and love it. (cpedia Mobil in the Market)
It automatically backs up all my sms, call log, and mms to my main google account... restores in one click. And it removes the extra step of deleting things twice. Still no MMS restore, but it backs them up for you.
I couldn't get the integration to work the way I wanted it to; basically like it wasn't integrated - my GV# rings what lines I tell it to - and my cell phone works like a cell phone, unless I specifically want to use GV for a call.
I have specific uses for both numbers - and need the flexibility in caller ID selection when dialing out - as well as for messaging.
The integration thing just wasn't working for me.
I definitely think it depends on how people have been using their phones previously. The integration is great if you've been juggling two numbers and wishing for just one you can tweak with GV's tools, AND keep MMS.
If you've been using the GV# to separate contacts (completely improper usage, admittedly - seeing as how you could simply create contact groups and handle them that way), the integration is a nightmare.

Is this if you're using your sprint number... or your GV number?
I had mine setup to use my GV number, and the only app that registered new messages was GV. No other program received the messages at all.
Maybe this was my problem with getting the integration thing to work.
i was integrated to use my sprint number.
you should be able to log in online to gv and stop the integration you have. then set up the app on the phone again skipping the integration step. then it should work seperately like you'd like at least for calls/voicemail.
Its so odd though. i recently switched from an htc hero200 (sprint) running CM7 and there was no integration. once i switched to the evo, all of a sudden this integration? i have no complaints with GV settings except one... i hate not being able to make calls from 2 numbers. is this simply something with the stock sprint ROM? once the evo 3d is rooted and a rom is ready to be installed, will this integration thing go away?
Disable Google Voice Integration
sign into goggle voice online go to setting and disable google voice to sprint
I just wish it would go back to the way it was originally. How can they begin to think that this integration is better than how it was before?

Having problems too with Mikmik rom. I'm gonna try nandroiding back to the stock rom, TB GV there and then go back to the rom of choice and restore GV via TB. You should do the same
Zero issues on Synergy's ROMs. Took some trial and error to get it to work properly though.
Since the idiots at Google and Sprint BROKE GV with that **** ass integration, you have to skip the initial set up screen, then log in. then skip, then go to your "Call" settings and choose it as your voicemail carrier.
All that depends you having it set up properly in the web site as well. Dialing *28 is what I had to do 2 years ago.
I have had Google Visual VoiceMail forever on my T-Mobile account, works great and would recommend it to everyone. I also have a Thunderbolt with Verizon and have been using their stock voicemail service. Can I add my Verizon Thunderbolt to my Google VoiceMail? I am not sure about having two different carriers sharing the same Google VoiceMail number?? I have not tried yet, don't want to screw up my settings and be pissed off at myself for a week. It is great being able to get my voicemail messages from my laptop. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,

Yes
The short answer, yes. The long answer, yes.
You have Google voice on your phone (I'll assume you just said yes). Go through the setup process (Your phone needs to have the same gmail account as your T-Mobile Google Voice account set up on the TB). When it comes to the part where it tells you it is going to setup the settings for your phone, it will kick out saying something like "some carriers don't allow automatic set up". It will also give you a link to the GV help Center. Follow it on your phone and do what it says. Then, hit next/ok all the way through to the end of setup. Go to Settings/Call/Voicemail Service. If it says Google voice, you're done. If not, choose it.
Under Voicemail settings, it will give your voicemail # (rather than #86) and your gmail acct #.
Done.
All google voice does is set up a forwarding rule with your carrier to send any missed calls to Google's voicemail number instead of your normal one. You can actually do this by hand by entering a combination of digits, but the app streamlines it for you. Google voice doesnt know where the calls are calling from. Then of course the app on your phone just checks in with the Google Voice server the same way it does with the Gmail server, so all functionality is the same. You could install the GV app on 100 phones and they would all have access to your voicemail.
I've tried several times to switch from ATT voicemail service to GV and it fails, even after rooting (not sure that matters, but ).
It (GV) shows up as an option, but attempts to switch fail.
Anyone know of a solution?

I had to manually enter the codes into the handset. Not sure why it didn't work automatically, but it is easy to do manually. Just go to google voice in your browser then under settings there is an activate google voice on this phone link which gives you the correct things to dial in order to set it up.
I just made the switch to Google voicemail after I couldn't get AT&T's visual voicemail to work on the phone. Had to enter all the forwarding numbers manually as above.
In the GV app there is an option to integrate voicemail into the system dialer (View and play voicemails from the call log). That particular feature doesn't seem to be supported by the HTC dialer app, only by AOSP dialers. Does anyone know of a workaround or a way to get this integrated?

Can someone post a step by stop on how to switch google voice? I'm sure a bunch of users other than me would like a foolproof guide.
Which visual voicemail are you guys talking about? Have you tried this one? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2018018
or are you talkin about the one that comes stock on the phone? This will work, you just have to call ATT and have them make sure Visual Voice mail is provisioned for your account. It is not there by default. THe stock ATT messages app (which has a crappy VVM) doesnt require additional provisions, but the VVM.apk above does. Here is another thread in the regular ATT HOX forum that has more info. I've tried both, and the VVM is way better than google voice. It's worth the time to call ATT, maybe more than once, to get VVM working. I ended up calling 3 times. Low level customer support does not have a clue..Once i got to a real tech, they had it done in 45 seconds. Hope this helps. Good luck!
