Unfortunately, my Canadian Bell Vibrant bricked when i was listening to music (seriously dont know how that happened). After doing some searching on this forum, i found it was just a soft brick which can be fixed either with recovery mode or Odin. For some reason, since the brick, my recovery mode has been disable, however, the download mode still works (yay). After reading about all the warnings of using Odin, i decided to make sure everything was ok before taking the plunge.
Will the Odin files posted for the Tmobile T959 work on my Canadian Bell Vibrant (i dont want my soft brick to turn into permanent)?
Is Odinv1.000 or Odin1.3 more reliable? ive heard of it bricking phones and without my recovery mode... im kinda hesitant to do it.
Lastly, does anyone know a safer way to get my phone fixed? My phone was unlocked and rooted prior to bricking so im guessing theres no way to get the company to completely fix it. Well, i guess i could act stupid and get them to look at it?
What do people normally do with phone bricked due to tampering with firmware?
Ive seen the video tutorial for Odin and it looks fool proof so i really want to try it.
Any help with this would be great

It would be great if someone could help me out

Hello folks,
Generally loving my Vibrant, of course hungry for Froyo. I have two Vibrants, the first I've been using and have modded it with root and other enhancements. I gave the other phone to a friend as a gift, but when I wanted to root theirs using the same method I've used on multiple occasions, it would NOT boot into the recovery mode. I use the UP + DOWN push, plus the power button. No dice, just get the cheesy "come together" Tmobile screen, I tried up, down, waited for the Samsung to flash twice, no dice. It was not that complicated on my phone and I can continue to do so. I have looked up threads and there is suspicion that T Mobile disabled this on later vesrions? This version was shipped to me slightly after my own, within a week or so.
It would be disheartening if I couldn't root and make his phone more efficient to deal with the battery hog issues as well as other enhancments. Maybe I'm doing it wrong but I've treid multiple combinations and never get into the utility/recovery screen.
Any thoughts on this? I tried rooting before that with the Ryan one click lag fix, and it seemed to indicate it was done,b ut then Iwhen I opened ROM manager, it said it was not rooted yet. Then when I tried the one click app fix again, it mentioned it couldn't because soemthing about the SD card mounting, etc. I could put the stock PIT file on it via ODIN could I not? But I dont' want to go to all that hassle if it's something else. Is there a another app solution that can root for you? I can mount and drag the update zip there, but can't get tot he screen to reinstall packages.
Hopefully TMobile isn't stripping this down so we can't customize and it's something else but I'm trying all combinations short of doing the hokey pokey.
Thanks in advance!
Kelly
Samsung Vibrant
Apparently either Samsung or Tmobile are having the option disabled via the normal ways to get into recovery. There are numerous other threads regarding this throughout the forums detailing other peoples experiences regarding this.
Take a look here for one:

Join the club. I'm on my third vibrant with this same issue. I am returning it this week for a refund. My first....and last samsung phone.
thank you guys, I was afraid of that. one of the phones greatest assets was it's hackability. Froyo had better do something with battery consumption, speed, etc, or this phone will be a great screen and not much more. boo to hardware lockdowns! let the hackers hack and if you want to void the warranty, do it. I'll see about this ADB mode, I'm wondering if someone can create an app that would successfully root so ROM manager will work. I wonder why the one click fix lag app, which supposedly roots, did not. It seems like an overall lock down on this access?
At any rate, I'll try the other options but it's looking like more and more, my buddy will be a slave to Samsung release timeframe, and thats assuming froyo and updates will fix significant bugs and improve battery life.
thanks again guys! I'll keep trying.
And what about the download mode, can you get in it?
not sure, you mean the little digging android feller? I will try that, I gave the phone to my friend but sent him the page in this thread earlier regarding multiple attempts to get into either / or mode. would that actaully help install the packages aka root the phone? I only used that last time to reinstall via Odin, the T Mobile factory build because it was soft bricked due to a bad lag fix that froze the phone on the Samsung logo.
download mode , can that get it rooted? Or just wanting to know if all hardware access has been blocked?"

Yeah, that the digging guy. It won't help you to get rooted, but i can't get in download mode, so if you can advise me how can i do that, i appreciate
Hi Guys,
I know I´ll get it pretty bad after reading what happened to me, but I´ll endure what I deserve if someone could help me
I installed voodoo lagfix over Team Whiskey´s Onyx R4.2 and at first it seemed to work pretty fine. Some minor things I wasn´t too happy with so I decided to get rid of it.
Now comes the bad part: I should have read how to do this much more careful. What I misunderstood was that I should just delete the folder "Voodoo" in my SD which I did. I then tried to do a factory reset and know I am in the following situation: whenever I try to reboot my phone I get the Samsung Galaxy S i9000 screen right after the Samsung Vibrant screen, the robots girl´s voice tells me "Factory reset mode detected" and that´s it. I´m stuck. Even if I take out the battery I get the very same thing (Samsung Vibrant, Samsung Galaxy S i9000 screens, girl´s voice and that´s it!).
Honest question: is there anyone in this forum who could help me get my phone back to work or did I screw up? (I mean more than I did, anyway)
I know I should have been much more careful, it´s just that with all the flashing before nothing ever went wrong, guess I just got careless.
Any help here would greatly be appreciated.

Another voodoo doll gets a pin I'm not sure how to help as I've never used voodoo but odin might help can you get into download mode
V5 custom vibrant
Hi, thank you sooo much.
Thanks to another comment of you in another thread I managed to get the phone into download mode (took the battery out and used only the volume buttons while replacing the battery, thanks so much for that, too!).
I was thinking of a way to get rid of voodoo and the phone back to factory firmware&kernel and start over with flashing A LOT MORE CAREFULL...hopefully I´ll get to the point. anyhow
Hmh I downloaded a folder that contained everything I should need to get my phone back to stock.
Seems like ODIN is not able to work on my phone, though, because after I inserted the right PIT and PDA and started the process ODIN seems to have stopped working...I really have no clue what to do now.
Yeah of you know how to use odin and have the files and drivers you'll be set then make sure you get rid of voodoo I hear that its not worth the trouble cause theres no app in they're face so sometimes people forget they even have it and then try to flash a new room and the voodoo turns there phones too poo poo a lot of roms come with ryanza lag fix that's what I use everytime I've had no problems with it ever
V5 custom vibrant
Yeah, it is definitely not worth the trouble.
ODIN doesn´t seem to work at all, I´ll give it another try now. If it doesn´t work at all, do you know of any way to get the phone back to "out-of-the-box" state?
Do you have odin set up correctly if so try to remove sim and external sd card it can confuse the system sometimes tel me the set up for odin that you have it might be something wrong with that end
V5 custom vibrant
You might want to flash eugenes froyo that didn't brick then go back to stock for some reason or another
That seems to help people that forgot to disable voodoo
V5 custom vibrant
You wouldn´t happen to have a link for that, do you?
I got idea from another thread and tried looking for Eugenes Wonder File, the only thing I could find was Eugene saying support dropped for XDA...is there any way I could a hand on that file? google doesn´t seem to help. Sorry to bother you with that, man, I was foolish and desperately need that phone (even in out of the box state) cause I´m waiting for a very important phone call (I know, should have done that crap AFTER getting the call!)
Its no trouble but I think I saw the site name in the forum somewhere yesterday for eugenes web site I'm not sure where if I find it I'll let you know you'll be able to get the file from there I'll look for it you should do the same go into the development section and go through some of those eugene threads you might be able to find a link to his site in there probably closer to the ends of the threads cause he just moved like this week or the end of last week
V5 custom vibrant
I just found it, don´t bother yourself with it anymore. Thank you very, very much for your help and patience.
I´ll try to get my phone back to work.
If i´m able to, is there any lagfix you would recommend? I love Onyx r4.2 ROM but would like to use a lagfix.
Ryanza all the way I think its already on the onyx rom if not you can find it on this site as its not on the market anymore I'm not sure why but yeah your welcome and good luck
V5 custom vibrant
Hi Arckhaist, I've the same problem on my Galaxy S. Have you solved???
EDIT: I solved with Odin. I flashed a new stock JPU.
Hey there,
I read on many threads here and on other sites that if your vibrant doesnt access recovery when pressing the volume buttons(both of them) and the power one together then your device is hardware locked, so apparently mine is since I've been trying to do just that for hours and miserably failed despite even viewing vids about the exact way in doing so.
Now back to my question, Im updating my vibrant to froyo (or intended to anyway) then came across many topics suggesting that updating the vibrant through kies (what I was about to use) would brick my phone. Is that true? Or is it just idiocy rumors and Im good to go. Please answer me ASAP I freaked out when I read that and immediately unplugged my vibrant but don't worry kies was only in download mode as in downloading the update from the internet not into my precious vibrant
Wow, I certainly didn't expect ut to be that impossible of a question.
Some people have had issues, a lot with your story (hardware locked, never rooted or flash a custom rom). There is a way to enable the three button recovery and I believe that you can get into download mode without it, so there's always an option if it does brick your phone.
Actually, from what I read, the only way to un-brick a bricked phone is by rooting it and going to recovery which would involve the three buttons procedure. So if Im to rely on that option I have to find a way to unlock my hardware first before installing the update not after it as there's no way to do so after that.
In any case, it would be really helpful if you provide me with the way (or link) to how hardware unlock a vibrant. As you seem to agree with the say that a hardware locked phone will be bricked.
Well it looks like my Vibrant is actually rooted since I have the Rom Manager running safe and sound and the icon android superuser permission icon in the apps. I just backed up my data on the SD via Rom manager.
Now the new question is; does this mean that I have nothing to fear when/if I update my device? Please guys, help me with this as Im a noob really and can't make up my mind as I need the update to help me browse arabic sites but yet Im afraid this would end up bricking my phone.
Remove battery, plug in usb to pc, then put in battery while holding volume buttons. If you can get to download mode then you're pretty much unbrickable. If not there's the option of a jig you can make or buy if you want that can get you into dl mode. The way to enable the three button combo should be easy to find, Ill search for it when I get home.

Okay, So I am as NOOB as NOOB can be,
I got a used SGS2 (Bell/Virgin), I am on Telus so I figured, how hard can it be to unlock it instead of paying some dude to do it for me? (First mistake, and have been humbled every step of the way since!...)
Anyway I will try to keep this relatively short (it will be difficult)... ...I read a few things online and saw that I needed ODIN and a Rooting software, I originally used SuperOneClick, and to download the right insecure kernel to match my original one etc... ...problem is I obviously didn't read nearly enough when I started because I was almost done and then there was a hiccup when SuperOneClick said that I needed to enable SU in Kies. So I decided to go into Kies to try and do so but the instructions before I started Rooting said to put the phone in USB debugging mode. Apparently Kies doesn't see the phone if it is in that mode. Well by this time I can't get past the logo screen and this is where my downward spiral begins.
I then tried to unroot the phone to go back to stock but didn't really know what I was doing and then I read something about the cache needing to be wiped and then after that I read that maybe my OS was wiped. So at this point I did lots of reading (what I should have done in the first place) and most of anything useful I found was on XDA so that is why I am here. It seemed like yes, in fact my OS was wiped because of one of my not so S-M-R-T actions. So I fumbled through and found the right OS for my S2 and I had ODIN going strong and I had the OS loading, the green bar getting bigger in ODIN and the blue bar working it's way across the screen of my S2...I thought "finally!!, I rock!!"... ...then for some reason everything stopped! I had seen in a post that I had to uninstall Kies before doing anything, which I did...but I didn't see until after the fact that my anti-virus likely interfered (I didn't disable it for the process before I started).
At that point of course I was left with a phone that says "Firmware upgrade encountered an issue. Please select recovery mode in Kies & try again."
So then I was afraid to try anything else because many say to steer clear of Kies and also I had read that I may need a USB jig to be able to get it back into download mode because all I was getting was the "firmware upgrade issue" screen. I did make a USB jig with a resistance of 300K Ohms and I *can* get the phone into download mode. (Though another concern is that when I plug the USB jig in and it brings the phone into download mode, the counter is not reset and I read that that was supposed to be reset by the jig.)
So last night I got brave and decided to try and run ODIN and to have another attempt at installation of OS. Now I can get ODIN to detect the phone, but I put the I9100MUGLD3_I9100MBMCLD3_I9100MXXLD3_HOME.tar.md5 file into the PDA section of ODIN and it starts and gets to the part where it says loading firmware or something and then bootload.bin and it stayed like that for like, an hour and then I gave up, fearing that I am just going to screw it up even more.
So now I decided that I am not even close to knowing what to do next but every time I found anything to move forward it was on this site so I figured I may as well join the site since I have been here so often. Now I am hoping for some kind of miracle...so, in advance, please please please and thank you thank you thank you all for your input. (Sorry for the length of this I just wanted to get all the info I could into this)
Its quite a long story and didnt bother reading it.
If you can still access your phone via odin at downloadmode. Flash a stock firmware for your device and it should fix if it is just a soft brick.

Sorry for the length of the story, I thought there may be alot of useful info mixed in with the useless info... ...when you say use stock firmware do you mean the kernel or the actual OS? I tried loading ICS onto it (which I thought was stock but I may be wrong). Is it supposed to be gingerbread or something else? Also where would I find a good file for it.
Thank you again for any input, very much appreciated!

Thank you all so much for your help, I could not get it to work after several tries, I even tried three or 4 different USB cables and ports on my PC and still no. I read on another thread that one person tried another PC and it worked so I tried my friend's laptop and it worked!...my SGS2 boots up and all that now! Very very happy thank you all.
I apologize up front if this is has been previously asked. I found lots of helpful info on here searching through old threads but being a bit of a luddite I was a bit confused exactly which situation applied to me. I live in China and recently bought a s3 I9300I and attempted to root it using the chainfire method from the video on this site. Odin declared success but when the phone rebooted it just went back to download mode with a message at top saying, "Could not do normal boot, ODIN MODE." Turning it off and on, removing battery and retrying Odin flash produce no results. The most important thing of course is just to get the phone back to functioning but I'd also like it rooted if at all possible. I read that using Odin to install a custom kernel would root it and I would not be at all opposed to a good custom kernel. I read something about a binary counter that may need to be reset but that seemed to require doing something with the actual phone functions which don't seem to work. Odin still recognizes it when I plug it in and attempts to let me redo the rooting but it just shows a progress bar then reboots right back into download mode. Sorry if this is basic stuff but I'm kind of terrified of bricking this thing and am just not sure what the best course of action is here. Thanks for any help you can offer.
Chinese stock firmware is different to the international, there is a special thread in general forum on rooting etc.
Do you have a link to that thread? I have looked and cannot find anything that seems specific to this problem.
Please. Searching for "China" or "Chinese" gets me absolutely no relevant results. If this has already been covered can someone please direct me to the thread. I really need to get this phone working and am at a loss. Thanks.
