I've been searching and reading for the past two hours. I currently have stock Vibrant with the new J16 OTA update. I want to root my phone and install a custom rom. I see there are many ways to root, but can someone guide me to a tutorial that guides me through the best way to Rooting and flashing a custom rom? Secondly, is there a tutorial on how to get back to original factory rom for warranty?
Thank you

The answer to ever question you could possibly ask. . .at the top of this section that you probably didn't see, right under that pesky new topic button.

My $0.02, skip the FroYo ROMs for now, they are all broken to some extent. Bionix Fusion, for me anyway, is the best and most stable custom ROM available for the Vibrant. EVERYTHING works, and it is fast and rock solid!
Root Vibrant
Bionix Fusion 1.1
You can't go wrong from those links.

Thank you. I have a quick question that maybe you could help me with. Do you have to change kernels for different roms or does the stock one work on all?

No problem. And that all depends on the dev, they might include a custom kernel (so you can OC) but some may include the stock one and suggest a kernel for you to flash. I would suggest using a kernel other than stock if you wanna OC (although I'm not sure if you can use perflock disabler..can anyone confirm/deny?)
Edit: I'm not rooted yet, haven't had the time. But I might make the jump in a day or two. Kinda missing that aosp goodness!

All the ROMs (so far) are based off the original EVO 3d rom, the only difference is some have tweaks and/or HTC Widgets and apps like peep and friend stream taken out. If a ROM isn't fully functional it will say so in the first post. If you wipe yes you will loose all your apps but apps like MyBackup or Titanium Backup can restore them as they were in minutes. If you going to be flashing ROMs, one of those programs is really good to have.
As known by most of you, removing any "bloatware" by means of deletion, such as Bell bloatware, will make it so that you are not capable of updating to gingerbread.
I did not know this prior to deleting my .odex files and rooting, sadly.
I had a simple question, what am I to do in this kind of situation? I've read here to flash a stock SBF and update it from there, however, I'm a bit weary of flashing my device for risk of bricking it. (Bought off Craigslist...rooted = no warranty)\
Any ideas xdaders?
Oh and I just finished a factory reset.
are you on 2.3.x or 2.2?
2.2, froyo.
Motoblur.
(2.3 backwards sbf flashing would = a brick )
Flash a fruitcake?
You should just flash the newest sbf. And flash a new rom such as cm7 that would perform even better. After unlocking the bootloader just flash cwm and if you really wanted you could flash a stock carrier rom.

Nevermind, I get it.
Thank you freshlycutlawn, I'll look into flashing the newest sbf. This is relatively safe if all the procedures are followed, correct?
Yes, since you are on froyo pretty much all of the unlock sbf's will be newer and wont brick your phone, you only have to watch out for an older version. Other than that you should be good to go, let me know if you have any other questions especially since im on bell too. It was a bit more tricky to find all of the correct downloads and follow the right steps, but now i have done it and im sure the same way i did it would work for you. Best of luck.

That would be appreciated. I have been trying to find Bell files and other related information using the search function, but if you've already done that and are offering to help, might as well.
If you can private message me it, that'd be greatly appreciated.
I have just started to use android. Galaxy S 2 is my 1st ever android device gifted by my wife on our 2nd anniversary. Even though it was bought in Lahore, Pakistan; it is 3 mobile UK branded gs2. I was about to root it watching this video: youtube(DOT)com/watch?v=KNVE0UDe-bQ
I realized that since this is branded and I cant even update it (which could mean that it is locked), I may not be able to root the device following this video. Also, I am confused since my device's build number and kernel number are pretty different (screen shot attached).
Can someone guide me easy to follow exact steps to root this device safely? If I mess up, my wife will use the brick on me .
What software would I want?
Where will I download the software from?
Where will I get the insecure kernel from?
I so want to use WIFIKILL at office

There is only one issue here.. I do not know what the ODS is as I am new here. It would be nice of you, if you would guide me with links?
You can remove network lock AFTER rooting. You can root using cfroot but ChainFire has only released cfroot for stock firmware not branded 3 firmware so you will need to flash to stock firmware, root, rhen use the network unlonk in the market. I found the CF one didnt work but the other one in the market works.
After you have done this then you can use ClockWorkMod (added with cfroot) to flash the gtalk with video.
There is alot to learn...

can root i9100G not? coz i having a problem on it
Thanks Rajesh. Let me show you the crap apps I am dealing with. The guide you are have referred to; will it work for my branded GS2?
I have another question. Can I de brand the device and get rid of all these apps without rooting it? I will not be able to use wifikill, but then if this is more complicated then rooting a non branded S2; I guess I will have to live with this! HATE IT!
Phone is now rooted!!!
Thank you everyone! My phone is now rooted and I am all set!
Im a noob or maybe worse when it comes to roms and flashing. I want to install themes on my phone. I like many on here my phone is a samsung i777 that is rooted with stock 2.3.6 firmware and my kernal is 2.6.35.7 build is GINGERBREAD.UCKK6. What do i need to flash in order to install themes on this device or are all themes universal? Say i wanted to install one of Money's Themes give me an example of what i must do and than i can figure out the rest on my own for different developers(this is just an example I'm not giving or taking any credit away from any developer) Any help would be appreciated.

To install any theme, you will need to install a custom ROM.. if you want to stay close to stock experience, you can get started by installing Unnamed or SHOstock. Once you install a custom ROM, you should find that ROM-specific themes.
And before you install any custom ROM, you will need a custom kernel (like Entropy's DD kernel or Siyah) to get a recovery like CWM or Redpill. You need recovery like that to install any custom ROM.
So.. read, read, read before you flash anything. All you need is patience.
Tip: Look at people's signatures.. that will give you an idea of what ROM/theme combo people use.

Max posts alot of root stuff for SGS2 i9100, Tmobile, sprint, etc.. he uses lotta tutorial videos seems to help out alot of my friends and myself too

www.galaxys2root.com
Btw this is the forum link, he has all the files u need as well
for SGS2 theres a root method using zerg rush which is relatively safe compared to odin.. no soft brick risks
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1103399
I know with other devices you use software to take advantage of an exploit to root and this process can be used on our SGS2 also but the Simplest method in my opinion is to flash (use Odin to install software from pc to phone) a rooted kernel which when done your good to go. Rooted and everything required installed and setup for you. 2 minutes.
Cfroot kernels are virtually stock kernels that have been rooted.
Once you are rooted your options are endless.
Enjoy.
