Hey Everyone,
Just got my Droid Eris yesterday and I'm having fun exploring the phone and checking everything out.
One question, I noticed that many apps (in fact, almost all) don't have a direct "Quit" or "Exit" command. So I'm usually pressing "back" or "home" when I'm done with something. This left me wondering though... when I use "back" or "home", does the app actually exit? From what I can tell, it doesn't... so does the OS automatically clean up these apps from time to time? I came from WinMo 6.1, and it was irritating that everything defaulted to running in the background. How does Android treat it? Is there something special in this regard with the HTC Sense UI? I've seen there are some third-party task manager apps you can get... are they worth getting? Or just "let the phone do it's thing" and i will be fine?

I use a Task Manager from the Market called "Taskiller." But I'm still trying to figure out how the Hero handles the apps because sometimes it gets sluggish and taskiller helps out but then theres other times when I have all sorts of apps open and it runs smoothly, lol, I guess it just works sometimes.
I wonder if it's like the iPhone, where it kills the task when you hit the "Home" button. It doesn't seem like it, as some apps seem to just come up instantly when go back in them, as if I was "switching" to them, and no re-opening them...

No I dont think thats the case because Android has a special way of "Multitasking," though I'm not completely informed so you might have to research that on your own. But like I said download a Task Manager from the market so you can see how much available memory there is.
By default, Android applications never really "close" as their components can be called upon at any time. (Android applications are structured to be very modular, allowing individual components to be used from each.) When an application needs memory immediately, and another hasn't used it for a while, it shoves the old app into what's called swap space (presumably it's on your SD card) while the new one takes over. This is why you'll occasionally see a delay while performing a "hard" operation (like opening an app) while the system is under heavy load. That's the old app's memory getting written out to temporary storage and the other one taking it over.
At least this is my understanding of the situation.
From what I've heard Android (linux) does a much better job of managing the memory used by our apps. And, that we "...shouldn't have to use a task killer..." to close out apps that are running in the background, especially on our phones.
For instance, the myTouch 3G usually only gets about 20-30 MB of RAM freed after a full clean up of background apps, the Eris will have about 80+ MB after a cleanup and they both feel about the same to me.
I still use Task Panel to close my apps sometimes because I just like starting fresh in an app from time to time. Also if things start getting fishy (screen stuttering, touch screen not working properly) I'll kill all running apps to see if it fixes the problem which in some cases it just does not and a reboot is still required.
I have found that by holding the home key it will bring up all the apps so you can switch to the one that you want so it is still running them in the background.

i use a Task application called Task Manager. It gives lists of all Applications running, all process and even has an uninstall feature. It also has a auto end application feature but on my eris it's greyed out(maybe Pro only?)

I'm currently having problem with apps they are auto opening themselves.
Sometimes at startup when I open my open and use Helix/ADW all launcher manu apps are open automatically. It eats like 50MB of memory and battery.
And even while my screen turns off it opens app. I was sleeping and my screen is turn off/sleep and I check task panel it got apps open even the screen is lock.
Got No Idea on this. Why my apps are auto opening.
And do I need to debrand?

It's not the X10, it's an Android thing.
Then how to get rid of this auto opening app? I never exp. this on 1.5 and 2.1 on my HTC Hero just on this 1.6
Get Automatic Task Killer or something similar, and set it to kill apps on open...if you find the apps opening affects your performance.
Also, if they're apps that sync with a service, make sure all syncing is off, or they'll keep coming up anyway, to try to sync with the cloud.
as a personal anecdote, once I stopped using task killers, the phone started running more stable and quicker.
So Task killers are not good?

seriously I just boot up my phone and use ADW Launcher and those open up automatically? what does those do? for startup? there are tons more like 25 apps on startup. This thing is not good since I'll do task killing always even the phone is screen off. My phone is opening Voice Dialer Handsent SMS even though i dont have message or calls received.
It's like every min or hour I'll do task killing it kills battery
Well, Alarm Clock has to be on, so it knows when to go off... If you don't have any alarms set, delete all the alarms that are in it.
Email is on by default, since it's a smart phone. If you don't have an account set up, email won't sync, and thus, isn't really doing anything. Calendar will attempt to sync with google if you set it up, but if not, again, shouldn't be doing anything. SMS will start to monitor for incoming SMSes. A lot of services start so they're there when you try to start them up. Basically, anything that has to sync to the internet to update will start automatically.
If things like Photoshop Mobile or a game or something start up, those should be killed.
Stand alone apps that don't access the internet should have no business starting up on their own.
Some people on here claim task killers are great and help a lot... some claim they do nothing. I'm torn, because the phone feels a bit faster than when I used the task killer everytime I unlocked the phone. If your phone is new, cycle the battery a few times, and let it 'break in' and, eventually, the battery life should improve.

Can somebody help me? I am running my xperia x8 and as i know since i rooted and got myself new rom i was wondering why my games work slow but after a little research i found out that official Facebook app is working in background so i unninstaled but now my question is is there someone who has some facebook app non-official which i can run without the problems?
PS: Sorry if spam on this thread but i cant make new threads on this app (or i can but i cannot figure it out)

Android works by loading EVERYTHING it can into memory, up to a threshold and then removes apps from memory if they're not being used and memory is required for newly initiated applications.
Some apps have a terminate and stay resident approach and are seen as 'services' and they just stay active no matter what. Email, Calendars and status bar and etc never leave memory cause they're all waiting for there big moment, an email, an appointment, a finger touch etc.
Using a task killer doesn't really do anything, cause as soon as you 'kill' the process and the moment there is available memory again the process will just return to active/inactive memory because that's the way Android memory processing works.
If you have root access you can delete/freeze system apps you don't require.
A 'slim' Android v2.3 ROM shouldn't have more than approx 110 system apps. Less that 95 if you're good.

Most of the apps you listed are system apps and will, by their nature find there way into memory all the time. That's just how it is.
After a few hours of use many of the non-used apps will drop out of memory and others will take their place.
Loading applications into memory has a time and processing cost and so if it's already in memory, it's quicker to access.
However the Android system doesn't know your usage traits at start-up and that's why some less used system applications may be seem in memory until they're weeded out by those you do use. Again, nothing to worry about,
Using an XPERIA X10i with ~384MB of memory leaves little room for bloatware and thus a lean running machine is the order of the day for the XPERIA X10i.
I installed a task killer and noticed that when killing certain apps, the phone just lags real bad. I discontinued use of it and now the phone has no serious pausing. I was killing unknown apps with Android box icons.

yeah I uninstalled it as well. I heard Android does great job of managing ram and as soon as it gets low, it will start killing other apps automatically.
you need to learn what apps need to stay running, but some apps are just fluff and worthless... you may need to set up you task killer to ignore certain apps like handcent and clock... killing any android processes is usually a bad idea.. I just kill my 3rd party apps that open for no reason or use it to close apps when I am done using my phone for a while...
You should not need a task killer with this phone. Android has been managing its own memory and background services quite nicely for a while now.

Thats what i was told but when i uninstalled the task killer my phone lagged with everything i did. Even when closing programs properly it still lagged. Im keeping my task killer.

yeah maybe its not as good as most people say it is at controlling its own memory usage.
Task Killers = meh,
Android has a way of doing things and that means keeping apps open for some time, I tried using app-killers and it did not seem to make my phones run better, and auto kill everything is even worse...

idk if youre rooted or not, or if this app works on the vibrant cuz it does an amazing job on the g1, but you could try autokiller, tho it requires root. what it does is change the android memory management settings and will kill apps more frequently depending on the settings you choose.

I still need to use it for those unruly apps but I got so used to it because my old phone would lag with Slacker even in the background and I had to kill it. I've stopped using it and I've stopped having major problems. Just an FYI for those out there that still use one, it's not needed here on a regular basis really.
I noticed that I can't use the "kill all" function in Advanced Task Manager by Arron La any more without making my phone freeze up. My brother suggestion Task Manager by Rhythm Software (he has a MyTouch Slide). This program doesn't give me any problems when killing files and also doesn't list system files (that I've noticed).
The people who are having problems with task killer are the ones that are not setting it up correctly or don't have enough apps installed for it to make any difference.
If you don't setup the ignore list correctly your phone will freak out or make your existing problem worse.
Android 2.2 is a different story though, Froyo is faster without a taskiller
Buddy here's what .....
Download AutoKiller from the market , then go to the dev's webpage ,there he has a lot of information about android and memory management .... then you can make an informed decision .... the lag issue you continue to have .,.,..., you might have to do a hard reset to clear the system of that poorly coded task/app killer ....

I used to have the original my touch 3g, lag central, even on custom roms. Task killer was handy, so I got in the Babbitt if killing tasks. I then got me a nexus, and it seemed to have not needed one, but I still used it out of the Babbitt and being paranoid of my plbattery being wasted with apps on the background and lag lol. Well, I'm now done with them, seriously, no need for task killers. I think on this phone it does more damage then good, most apps need to be running on the background, killing them just lags your phone. Like you'd lose signal, or it would run time and date update again, etc.
Task killers may not be necessary for memory management, but it will help save on battery by killing 3rd party apps that stay running in the background. I use Advanced Task Manager myself, and never get any lag when I run it. The main thing you need to "exclude" if you havnt already, is the TWLauncher(or whatever launcher you're running).
like widgets? such as "apmobiles", seems to be a newspaper sort of thing i will never read. i also can't uninstall social/music/gaming/book hubs? i'm in the setting/applications/manage applications bit.
i want to basically delete a LOT of apps then only install what I need? i'm new to smartphones, moved from a nokia keypad phone. so the galaxy s2 was a massive jump for me.
Have a search for titanium backup and root. You'll need to root your phone 1st before you can 'freeze' but not remove apps.
The phone is brand new and it will take a while before custom roms that let you remove apps are available.
If I were you I'd wait before rooting as it is still a bit complicated and simpler methods will come along soon, I'm sure. I'd use the time to read the guides and get familiar with the phone.
Bear in mind that rooting/custom roms will lose you your warranty. Also, I'm not too worried about app removal as the phone has plenty of memory for my needs. Just remove the apps you don't want from the home screen and put on the ones that you do.
Edit: just wanted to clarify that I was referring to removing pre - installed apps.

Thanks for that, it's that I also noticed that there are services running in the background from applications that I'm not using, like I have the apmobile service running and also a social hub service running even neither is open. And I at least want to remove app shortcuts from the menu.
You'll need to root and freeze to remove the shortcut from the app drawer. I really wouldn't do that until you've read up and are confident though.
There are other threads about the social hub, have a search. I think you'll need to reset the phone and then not add any accounts if you want to stop it from being active.

To add-up about removing the widgets (probably you've found it already though), you only need to hold down the widget and slide it down to an area says remove
this phone comes with a built in task manager and a widget that shows you active tasks, i use the widget on my phone's desktop to close apps as needed ( i know the phone can handle it but its just my own thing lol ) and from there, there's a tab that lets you uninstall apps as well.
ofcourse you wont be able to uninstall those that came with the phone just yet.
I rooted mine which was dead easy and was my first time so you'll be fine. Download AntTek app manager from the market its free and lets you freeze, delete and backup any apps and widgets you want. You will no longer have any of those crap apps working in the background draining your battery. Hope this helps.
Edit: Oh yeah the built in task manager doesn't show system apps working in the background or at least not all so well worth freezing or removing them.

Yes I listen about the internal management and I am aware that it is not a suggested practice but since I want to have control on what is happening and i have serious concerns about the algorithms to free RAM (maybe bull****), so I prefer to do it on my own risk

- Settings, Application manager, Running, "Show services in use"
Identify what apps are in use and i don't like, then go to
-Settings, Application manager, All,
select app and Click "Force Stop"
Doing it my device has a better performance however, some apps still going alive after some time, for instance: Email ( I saw other in the past)
Using "Autoruns" app and checking "email" app I can see with changes of state can start "Email" however, sometime "email" is reenabled after be manually stopped but none of previous conditions happened.
How can I kill "email" or other app and force to stay off? (disable it and install other email app is not a valid answer)

more info about processes, mem and autostart
I am still fighting with Android and how it manages processes, now I am sure that my main problem became each time I went into flight mode or it is restarted.
But it is not only Email being executed and being using in memory but other processes that I am not using doing that, such as:
(Mem. on OS monitor- Mem. in "service in memory"(android settings))
Event: Connectivity changed
-youtube 22.2MB-6.2MB
-Google play services(com.android.gms) 26.8MB-12MB
-Maps 20MB-4.9MB
-Factory Test (18.6MB -3.4MB)
Event: after Startup
-youtube 22.2MB-6.2MB
-Software update (18.0MB-4.3MB)
-Internet (com.android.browser) 18.9MB-3.3MB
There many apps which are executed after events like previous but they are closed after a very short time, but I am frustrated about those which are not unloaded.
Regarding "Email" app I decided to use a free email app and as Email cannot be disabled, so, I removed the accounts associated to email app, however even without accounts configured, it still being launched and wasting resources. can I avoid it?
What do you think?

It's not possible to do what you want without root, unfortunately (unless you're talking about normal apps, in which case you can uninstall them to keep them from running). An alternative would be to use Greenify, though it won't be fully automatic without root either.
What about editing the startups rights?
Has anyone used APK permission remover?

Apk permission remover never stops an app from automatically starting. It only helps in removing the permissions we see during installation.

Yes but after SO long I found the app 'autorun manager pro', and it allowed to disable triggers /autoStartups/autoruns
