I don't think it backs up the kernel, if you flash a rom with a different kernel and you want to go back to stock you either need to use odin or flash the stock kernel. Search the'sticky' thread, it has all that stuff. Not sure about the hardware lock though

Yes. If you check the bible in the dev section there is a link to the stock kernel i believe.
So would I be able to flash the kernel back to stock through cw or would I have to use odin? I'm just trying to see if there is a way to go back to stock kernel without using odin.

Kernal question

How do I remove a kernal after I've installed it? Do I have to re-flash the rom? I'm sure this has been asked before, and I apologize.

Just flash a different kernel right over the top of it. If you're flashig from a Voddo kernel to a non-voodo kernel make sure to disable voodo.
Thanks.

Recovery vs flash sbf?

Why do u have to flash sbf just to go back to stock, is there something wrong with just making a backup of stock...whenever I want to change to a new rom I just recovery to my backup stock img.

There is nothing wrong with doing that. That what I do, any time I flash something new always works great.

Flashing any kernel?

I'm led to believe that you can't flash any kernel with any ROM. Is this true, or can I flash any Vibrant kernel with any ROM?

Yes its true. You can flash any rom/kernel combo of the same os such as froyo/froyo or gingerbread/gingerbread with the exception of MIUI and CM7 kernel which will only work for those roms.

So say for example, if I were to flash the Platypus kernel while on MIUI 1.5.27, it wouldn't be a problem?

as long as the kernel is labeled with CM7/MIUI in the title, then it's safe to flash to a CM7/Miui rom.
OK thanks.

How would I flash a kernel in recovery? Do I rename the kernel to "update.zip" or just leave it as is and "install zip from sdcard"?
clockwork recovery?
if so then it doesn't really matter
Name will be irrelevant when you flash from recovery. As you stated, just go to Install from Zip, then Choose Zip file, then pick it out. No specific name is required. "update.zip" is only required when you are trying to initially flash CWM Recovery onto your phone. Otherwise, files for ROMs, Kernels, Modems, etc. can have whatever name as long as they are a .zip file.
And SGS Kernel Flasher, free on the market, is easier.

Stock rom .zip

Can someone please backup their completely stock 2.3.4 rom and send me it, and for the devs. Would it be safe using rommanager to revert back to a stock rom?
Thanks
