Why the EASYEST apps doesnt exists? (GReader, Facebook and others) - HD2 Windows Mobile 6.5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I spent at least one day trying to find some apps that give me some very basic and easy functions and seems they doesnt' exist!!!
Just some examples:
- I want that on my homescreen there is a widget where I can see the latest/newest items in my google reader feeds/account.
I downloaded at least 10 different rss readers apps but NO-ONE has a widget that displays 2-3-4 or more lines with the newest titles The most near is a widget that show a 3x1 square with ONE line with the newest items switching between them every few seconds. I missed something? there is something like what I ask?
- I want that on my screen there is a widget where I can see what is appening in my facebook account. The FB for android widget shows only one/last post. The HTC FB widget shows too many things and you cannot use if you are using a non-sense rom or if resized it look really bad. The only alternative I found is the FB widget included in the LauncherPro... but what if I dont like LauncherPro?
- I want that on my homescreen there is a widget showing me my exchange/gmail mailbox: just sender: mail_object. Can be done with a very simple widget in the market for gmail, but not for exchange. To do this I had to pay and install a different mail client (Moxier) that has a widget like this...
I'm just wondering I will start to lear java to start developing my own apps

use any of the android builds that say Sense. HTC Sense on these ROMs have all of the above functionality for your homescreen.

Can I use the HTC sense widget also if I use a different launcher?

As far as I know, as soon as you disable the sense launcher bar and use a different one such as Launcher Pro Plus you lose all the Sense widgets so the answer would be no you cant.
Mark.

Right.. this was what I experienced.
I dont want to use Sense widgets because
1) I setted up my dpi resolution to 180 to have a "bigger" homescreen
2) I use launcherpro plus to have 6 rows x 6 colums on every home to insert more widgets
In this way I just power up my phone from standby and I see:
1) hour and day
2) weather
3) news from my choosen keywords
4) calendar with the upcoming events
5) what is happening in facebook
So my question still remains... we have the market full of useful apps that do anything.. but no app to do really easy things like show on an homescreen some datas...this is incredible for me...
I have to do them by myself
I just enclosed a screenshot of my Home Screen.. I know, is not "cool" but it's working for me and give me all the informations I need at a first look without having to scroll in different homescreens
But could be better if there were some better widgets available

You know what pisses me off, there is not even a reliable alarm clock app for android. All of them may let you down in a very critical time. But it is very good thet we can find 1000+ apps that does nothing!!!

what you means for "non reliable" ?

I mean alarm apps work most of the time but somettimes they do not. It causes you to be late for your schedule. I tried many apps. "Alarm Klock" is doing okay but still it fails to ring sometimes.
Also there are so many apps which only does one single simple thing. It is like you have 2 different apps for volume up and volume down. That fancy android market is empty in reallity.

Slide 2 Unlock for Android (called S2U2 for Windows Mobile)

I'm gearing up to get my first Andoid phone hopefully next month, and was wondering if there's a port or an app already out there that's similiar in look and functionality as S2U2?
thx.
There's Lockbot out there ;-)
It has iPhone lock style, Hero lock style, Donut lock style and even flair lock style!
Good new: it's free except uf you want to download skins (which doesn't even work on my magic) or want the flair theme (which is the ugliest one)
and even free version let you customise your own themes
cheers
Maybe "Lock 2.0" many skins available for this app!
http://de.androlib.com/android.application.com-google-code-slideunlocker2d-BmA.aspx
http://groups.google.com/group/lock2
Thanks!
Lock 2.0 sure looks just like it.
Yes,you can get a free demo or buy full version!
Just bringing this back up since I just got a new Evo and am coming from a Touch Pro which had S2U2. I have tried some of the options on Android, but have not found anything even close to S2U2.
Does anyone have any other thoughts on how to get my calendar entries, notifications, texts, etc to show up on my lock screen (it also needs to look as good as S2U2 did 2 years ago).
Thanks.
Check out WidgetLocker.
I think it's by far the best lock screen replacement, and is fully supported by the developers at the thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=732986
You should just youtube search "widgetlocker" and you'll see many video reviews of it in action. Note: hardly any of the videos go over the fact that it can change from stock Android slide to HTC slide even to iPhone slide to unlock.
And to rs1990, yes it can add whatever widget you can think of including ones relevant to everything you mentioned.
Funny that you just mentioned WidgetLocker. I am actually looking at that right now. It seems ok at this point, but not as polished as S2U2 is.
I actually think that the problem that I have right now is that the calendar widget kind of stinks. I am looking for a widget that just shows any upcoming events and nothing if there are none upcoming. The default one shows that obnoxious white box that says "No upcoming calendar events," which is ridiculous.
OK, I just found Pure Calendar and it looks somewhat promising. It will allow me to put a nice looking widget in WidgetLocker to show my entries. So, I am going to look into that a bit and see if it suits my needs.

You might want to try CalWidget http://www.androlib.com/android.application.net-eggenstein-android-calwidget-qxjt.aspx - sorry I don't have the Marketplace url.
It's not bad. Can be a bit slow to load up and refresh but it's surprisingly good for a free productivity app. And it works well with WidgetLocker
Is there a way to get something beautiful and usefull like S2u2 for android? i think Lock 2.0 is a real flop, widgetlocker is ok but s2u2 is way better... i would say it's the best lockscreen i've ever seen.
There is nothing even close to S2U2 on android. I only miss S2U2 app from WinMo world. There was so many options/customizations..
I agree with both of the last 2 posts...S2U2 is unmatched on Android. I have "settled" on using WidgetLocker and Pure Calendar. It's ok, but not as good as S2U2.
I agree 100 percent with both of you. WinMo was ok... android is great... but damn... i miss s2u2 like hell.
s2u2 is the swiss pocketknife or Macgyver of lockscreens...
Yeap,
I also miss S2U2 from WinMo. I just bought a new android phone (ZTE Link) and I do miss S2U2. May A_C could port S2U2 for android? Does somenone knows him?
The application I think is closest to S2U2 is GOTO (although its paid :-()
Best,
Jº
WidgetLocker, as already mentioned in this thread, is a very capable, attractive, and flexible lockscreen replacement. There are also others on the market.
I for one won't miss the random "won't unlock" weirdness with S2U2, although infrequent, sometimes I had to yank the battery to get out of it as the screen would be frozen after. SOMETIMES I could long-power press and get the reboot dialog and I could get to a task manager and kill it but usually it was stuck.
Is there any possibility that the creator of WinMo S2U2 try to code that app for Android? Or make some coop with somebody who can do that for/with him?
Asked somebody something like this to creator of S2U2??
Thanks so much.
tomas
I can just agree to the above, the only thing i miss on Android is S2U2 and G-Alarm. I tried widget locker and i had to reinstall my whole system. When it was active i pulled the right thingy on the locked screen and then it was all black and locket. But i liked it the little i did see when i was exploring it. Now i don't dare to install it again..
EDIT:
Yesterday i tried LockBot but it could not get it to work at all, when i read what it could do it was ONE of the most imprtant thing i miss from S2U2, it was locking the hardware buttons. But nah... no go here either.
I never used S2U2, but what are the features all of you miss so much from it? In the videos I see on youtube, I don't really see anything that makes it standout from any other lockscreen, like WidgetLocker...
The key with widgetlocker is getting the right widgets installed to work with it, but because of that it is pretty much infinitely flexible.

Calendar widget

Hi.
Does anybody know of a good calendar widget? I've tried some and most require you to use their calendar application. I personally prefer the calender app that comes stock with the vibrant and would like a widget that pulled info from there but looks more like the stock widget on vanilla android.
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
Im running "android agenda widget". It does exactly what i need and lets me view multiple calendars. Ita free btw

"Pure Calendar Widget" is one of the few paid apps that I have used the entire time since buying them when I had my G1 until now.
Extremely customizable and will allow you to use pretty much any calendar app.
Thanks guys, I'm downloading both right now.
I highly recommend Pure Calendar Widget as well.. excellent application and worth the $

So I bought pure calander widget, as well as messenger widget, very very nice. Granted theres a ton of options, too much to get into right now but so far so good. Nice way to spend the little bit of funds in my account. and the HTC sense skins are a nice touch.
*accidental doublepost, sorry.
The one that comes with launcher pro plus is pretty good. But if you don't use LP I guess its not too helpful.
using agenda widget
started using pure calendar widget today.
3 questions:
-i see someone mentioned you can make it htc sense like? i dont see how???
-when i rotate screen, the widget goes blank for about 2 minutes...not like a little lag and re-draw with takes seconds. it goes completely white for about 1 or 2 minutes, then it all comes back. any ideas?
edit, 1 more question:
-what is the difference between pure calendar widget and agenda widget? pros or cons of each?

You have the option to skin the app. At the bottom in the config screen theres the option to Continue and Skin. Thats where I found mine.
Also which launcher are you using? ADW has an option to enable and disable scrollable widgets, which might be the cause of your problem.
I recently discovered Jorte, which has a good amount of widgets and the calendar app itself is excellent and will fully replace the stock one (my preference) - but I'm pretty sure you can have it open the stock one. It can also sync with Google Tasks although it has to be done manually.
cool, thanks.
in LP, it enabled scrollable widgets and that has seem to fix the going blank problem.
but i think im going to try the agenda widget as pure calendar widget just slows my phone WAY down. It just slows everything down. maybe if i turn off scrollable in pure calendar and lp it will work better...

[Q] How to remove a widget from the widget list?

Hi there
i'd like to know how to remove a single widget from the widget list
the fact is that i need its app, but it has soooo many widgets and i only need one of them
how can i remove the only ones that i don't need?
ps i know that many apps allow to disable the widgets that you don't want, but unfortunately this isn't the case
I don't know of a way to remove a widget, without removing the associated app. There may be an app to do it somewhere, but it's certainly not a standard thing.
Here's an alternative though...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=780828
It groups widgets together, making the widget list a lot tidier.
well at least that's something
thank you!

i can sense incompatibility with the touchwiz XD
i will prolly try it later anyway and see what happens

Very good point - I use Go Launcher and it works fine with that. I just tried it with TouchWiz and it doesn't work.
aww such a shame
thanks so much for testing it!!
i'll keep that in mind in case i change the launcher someday
You don't mention what the name of the apk is ?
autostarts can remove widgets from list (Widget Updating)
Another thing you could always do (if it's not a system app) would be to move the app to the SD card. (I never tried that yet with my SGS2 since I'm still very far from filling the internal app spare, but I'm sure it will work.)
It's easy, quick and doesn't requires any additional software on the phone.

calendar widget

Anybody else upset that it doesn't come with one ? Any suggestions for alternatives?
Really depends on what info you want to see but I use Simple Calendar myself.

I used Simple Calendar in the past. But now I use the Today widget that comes with the phone.
I'm a big fan of the Pure Calendar, it's a pay for app.
i really like the LauncherPro calendar widget...
I like the business calendar widget, can take up a full page on the home screen if you want it to

I went and installed the TouchWiz 4.5 from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1061883 and it works flawlessly. It has the Calendar widget as well as some really cool features not found in TW4. I highly recommend this for someone wanting a near stock TW experience with some really functional tweaks.

+1 for the business calendar widget, or there is also android agenda widget, which is pretty customizable, and will also scroll if the launcher you are using supports that....
If you just want a list of upcoming appointments, Agenda Widget is awesome. Very customizable, though it takes some work to get it just the way you want. In just a 4x1 space on my screen I can see my next 4 appointments, with little bullets next to them telling me which calendar they are from.

Eh? Am I missing some detail about this question? My device has 2 calendar widgets pre-installed: Agenda and Today. Agenda takes up most of a home screen and scrolls to display lots of calendar appts; Today just shows the current/next appt for the current day.
is there really no month view calendar widget for tw launcher that links up with google calendar?
i have tried go launcher ex and the calendar widget on that is perfect, but i want to run tw launcher instead.
i dont want to add agenda or today widget because i want a month view. any suggestions?

This is a list of bloatware removed from the Cognition ROM:
http://ponack.net/designgears/Cognition777/removed/
The TwCalendarAppWidget.apk listed there has a month view. I believe it's from the Euro SGS2 version of Touchwi but not sure. Anyway, replace the corresponding app on your phone with the one from the link. Worked for me on UnNamed 1.3.1.
Attachment so you can see what it looks like. Not bad.
thanks!
do you know which folder it goes in?
is is possible to theme?
/system/app
same one as your current TwCalendarAppWidget.apk should be in. It should be possible to theme using all the normal tools, apk manager etc.
EDIT: OK, now you got me curious. I was able to decompile, edit some XML and recompile without problems, so yes, I'd say it definitely is possible to theme it. FWIW, I changed the first day of the week to Sun (normally Mon.). I might do a full flashable mod with different themes and what not. But it will take me at least a week b/c I am busy with stuff. No promises!
EDIT 2: Oh, never mind, my changes were superficial. All I did was change the day of the week label, not the display of the widget. Still a good project. Not sure at this point if it is above my head...
EDIT 3: Ok, now this is just getting embarrassing. Using the apk I linked to, all you have to do it go into the Touchwiz Calendar app, go to preferences, and set your First day of the week preference. Widget should reflect this change, otherwise, delete and re-add widget and it should be there!
I SWORE I tried this before and it didn't work.

Pure Grid Calendar is absolutely gorgeous. I have a month view on my lock screen and a week view 4x4 on one of my homescreens.
It pulls from multiple google calendars and displays duration bars corresponding to your events.
Simply stunning. Hands-down one of my best app purchases.

shouldn't passive widgets stay passive?

I am still catching up on android, but as I see it there is not a real smart way of using widgets. those passive ones, ok. but I have about 20 widgets on one side of launcher screens. they show news, clocks, stock market. they update often. But what for? I only visit their launcher pages two times a day for an hour or so.
next to it I have social page. showing all social streams but the same, I go there few times a day.
I was searching for two solutions, but found none.
1) widgets would freeze until their page in launcher is visited.
2) I would have separate platform, where I would place those widgets and access it through shortcuts from launcher.
I would be thinking that having secondary launcher with them which doesn't run without starting manually, would solve it. but no. widgets are registered in system once installed and will just stupidly requesting system attention 24h a day.
So what to do? best would be if widgets would communicate with launcher. second is to implement refresh settings into widgets. (update rate if program was accessed recently, different rate if not)
or at last, make widget separate from main app. so it will run faster, take less ram, get not kicked out of it after every update.
Please take this in consideration when creating apps.

I think the best option is more options. LIke you said, refresh interval settings, or even an option to update on screen wake/disable background updating.
Don't some widgets already have these options? I only use MT so others would have to chime in on this..
I like the idea of widgets only refreshing when they're visible. If it is even possible, it would be something to suggest to the developers.
My solution would be to put all widgets on manual refresh, and just refresh them when needed. Clocks won't have this option, but generally clock widgets don't use too much battery or resources. Social, news, weather, etc should have manual refresh options. You can use those options and just refresh when needed.

yes. that's why I posted this to developer's forum.
Shouldn't use rhetorical question as an subject I guess. My msg was trashed before being understood for what it was
This is an issue actually. The system is only as good as it would work for average user. And he might fill he screen with widgets. It doesn't take much. Only couple of non efficient apps and the whole android get laggish. He wouldn't understand what caused it and will just get annoyed and switch over to iPad.
manual refresh - mm, I don't like the idea too much. maybe on some widgets. but for me widget is something to just catch its info and not really use it.
update on screen wake - please no. to use user present and connection change calls is just another way to kill the device's power. Once I press the standby button, or connect to internet, I do it because I want to do something with the device right away. I don't want to wait for ten application actions to race for processor power right in that moment.
yes some have update speed, but that's not the perfect solution for all widgets, is it. Say I want to kill an hour of my life by worthless online socializing, I want those widget to update on one or two minute basis. But once I go away, I don't want them to do so anymore. hour is enough.
as I wrote on start about communication between launcher and widgets.
User would stop over one launcher screen and it will start to call updates on it's widgets one at a time.
And with combination that launcher will report which screen is/recently was active and widgets would consider this info in update schedule. This would be better option for informative widgets and those updating longer.
