Question - Vibrant Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm rooted right now if I get an official update notification doo I unroot

In the sticky of the general section:
IF I ROOT, WILL I GET OTA UPDATES?
Yes. Rooting will not prevent this, unless you flash a custom ROM that will block receiving the OTA update. Typically, accepting an OTA will make you lose root. Some upgrading to JI6 state they didn't lose root, I did (using the JI6 method above), but gaining root back is so easy.

However do be aware that all lagfixes are turned off if you install an OTA update. LagFix has been known to bork phones when OTAs are installed.

(Q) Rooting your Vibrant.

Hello, is there a root method where it doesn't interfere with the bootloader, so you still get official update, but you can run root apps.

Rooting will not prevent at OTA update. This has been addressed, many times.
So you still get updates

how can I check and verify current ROM version on the phone? What is the stock ROM shipped with the phone. Is there a name for it? I've rooted my phone by using ROM Manager app. What I don't understand is under ROM Manager/Check For ROM updates tab, it says "Your ROM is not set up to receive OTA Updates. Please contact the ROM developer!
I'll jump the bridge if i didn't get the Froyo when it's available OTA. Please Help. Thanks.

[Q] Only rooted-will 2.2 install?

I have a Fascinate that's only rooted, no other updates done to it. Will the OTA install or does it have to be unrooted first?
you can always try it and find out but I am actually not sure, just try to ota and tell us what happens!

I got s sprint update that took my root away. I having problems rooting again.

dude be more specific
Its common for OTAs to remove root access. Sometimes root can be preserved using OTA Rootkeeper, but it would have to be installed before installing the OTA. Check in the forums for your phone to see how to root it. Its also possible the OTA patched the root exploit that you used before.

You'd better find the appropriate forum on XDA for the phone and try to revert to a pre-OTA version. How did you verify that you've lost root, have you tried a terminal emulator and SU into root to verify?
More details will probably be most helpful
I have lg marqee, got update from sprint that took away root

Ok ok I apologize, I'm just super paranoid and want the ics update to go smoothly but want to retain my root and since no one had had the official ota yet want to make sure it will take and some strange root related file won't spoil my ice cream sandwich dreams, and I've been enjoying rooting and claiming and tweaking since my Eris days apologize for sounding like a noob , I'm just a paranoid veteran

You got. Just don't install a recovery and before you install any ota, temp un root. Then restore root after. Also unfreeze anything before and do not delete any system apps.
Thanks very much, that's what I thought just like to quadrupole check

So should I uninstall Bootstrap?
Yes to uninstall bootstrap. Separate thought; Motofail root method wouldn't create any ota blockers right no extra steps to take if used that method?

Safest way to root S4 MDK build running 4.2.2?

Im asking if there's any fool proof ways to root this configuration because i just bought the phone and dont wont to brick it like my s3 hard bricked. Any help or comments appreciated, thinking about just updating to 4.3 and waiting for a root method with that.
Read this. Used this guide for both my gs4's with zero issues

Don't update. You'll lose your ability to have a real custom recovery. Just stay on MDK and root. Then you can go ahead and flash a 4.3 ROM.

Should i factory reset and root before activating the phone with verizon?
I personally would just root, install custom recovery then wipe. After that pick a rom as most have ota updates disabled. Or install titanium backup pro and freeze the update apk's (I forget the file names)

Either way you do it just do not take the ota. I always root first and install custom recovery
