[Q] Alter/Disable the HTC Volume Control - HD2 Windows Mobile 6.5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've done some searching (yes, really) and I've got a question that I can't locate an answer for, if one exists.
I'd like to be able to use the volume buttons on my HD2 to actually do just that: control the volume, but I'd like to be able to do it without that damned volume control app taking complete control of whatever is happening at the time. Primarily I do a lot of audio and video stuff on my HD2, and I have to admit I'm just sick and tired of seeing that happen.
I've used PocketPCs for years (Axims, iPAQs, etc) and I have always been able to re-assign any hardware buttons using whatever app I want (I use TCPMP for video playback, Nitrogen for audio) and it seems like the HD2 just won't do it.
I'm using the stock whatever on this device, just got it a day ago. Specs say OS version is 5.2.21892, Manila version is 2.5.20121412.2, ROM version 2.13.531.1 with a date of 4/28/10 on it. I know I can muck around with all sorts of various ROMs once I learn more about this particular device, HSPL and Android and all that fun stuff but, can anyone tell me if it's possible to control the volume in an app like TCPMP or Nitrogen with the display off without having the damned thing kick the app out to show that onscreen volume control?
And what's with the huge jumps in volume with a single press of the buttons, that seems a bit odd. If I can't get this device to do what I want then I'm going to dump it and just go back to my trusty Axim X51v that has never let me down. I don't want to do that but this is just irritating beyond belief. One press of that volume and whatever I'm playing, be it music or video, gets kicked out which is damned odd. I can't even map the volume buttons with those apps for some reason, they won't take over the mapping.
Or am I just doing something wrong someplace...

look here to remove htc volume control and get the classic wm volume control

Yah, I had tried that solution and it was a no go. The volume control popup still happens (the old WM one) and now it adds that damned "BEEP" as well. Crap. It's hard to believe that a nearly 7 year old Axim X51v is superior in that respect over such a device as this HD2, I had such high hopes but I'm starting to think maybe dumping this thing is a better idea. Can't even get proper video acceleration with a Snapdragon platform device and my X51v can do hardware decoding of most any video I have without breaking a sweat. I watch pretty much every Xvid video encoding that I've got at 208 MHz for way longer battery life and the Intel 2200 GPU handles it without a single issue - this HD2 chokes if I try to do that with the same clips, go figure.
I thought technology was supposed to get better as time went by.
Bleh, dammit. A volume control should do that and only that: adjust the volume without doing anything else, including interrupting whatever application happens to be running, especially multimedia apps. Pretty irritating that it continues to stop playback so much, and even using HTC's media player of sorts the actual volume jumps are pretty excessive, like 20% per press. Where the hell did they come up with that huge gap from?
Oh well... just relisted it on craigslist for a quick sale.
Thanks for the help.

i woukd like to change the number of "steps" of the volume control. having only 5 levels totally sucks when listenig to music -_- anyone who knows how to do this? maybe it's possible to replace that volume control with the one of the music tab?

you could use a button remapper to run a different volume app, either of the following should work:
I have one called setVolume, written by von Daniel Schumann, I found it here somewhere. It is a command line .exe with has no visual or audio nitification, and 10% increments.
The other option is use mortscript to change the volume.

can you find that program for me please? i found 2 programs but none worked :/ i tried "volumekeys" and "setvolume"
i remember one of my roms hat a program that enabled the volume changer of the music tab for other programs, anyone knows the name of that program?

Thanks for the info but the HD2 sold quick as expected. I'll most likely replace it if I get another crack at one for a decent price but it's unlikely - that one only cost me $100 by someone that was pretty desperate for some quick cash so, I made $75 off the deal by reselling it.
Just before I sold it I started finding out ways to fix a lot of the issues I was having as well as a killer simple 1-2-3 step process of using HandBrake to make nearly flawless DVD or whatever transfers to videos for the HD2 also. Almost to the minute I was about to sell it I kept telling myself I should keep it but, with the first of the month now here I needed the cash to get caught up on some bills.
But I'll most likely get another one at some point. The HD7 just doesn't appeal to me for a variety of reasons. We'll see what happens.

Buttons on a Motorolla HT820 Stereo Headset

I recently bought a HT820, and I got it working with my SX66, but the Play/Pause and the track forward/back buttons don't work. Is there any way to map those buttons to a function on the SX66?
Not that I know of (the 3900 stack doesn't seem to support the AVRCP profile). I'm looking for this, too...
I recently bought a HT820, and I got it working with my SX66
I have an XDAiis and have recently purchased the same headphones, I upgraded the bluetooth settings from the site below
ftp://ftp.xda-developers.com/BlueAn...age BT 1.0.0.3900 and audiogw.dll - 1.33g.00/
I too can now listen to stereo audio but again the buttons on the right hand earpiece do not work.
I think that the problem lies with Windows media 10.
Try using TCPMP, which is free software, (use google), you will find that all buttons now work.
The software isn't as friendly to use as WM10 but at least the buttons fully operate on the headphones.
Good luck

How to force buttons work in WMP 10.
The buttons do not work because BtCeAvIf.dll contains some tricky code to control WMP. It looks for the skin file to parse it for the button positions and then send messages to WMP window. But the place in registry and the skin files themselves changes from wmp 9. So we need to fix both.
The idea is to make new skin files and force widcomm code to use them. WMP 10 should use the new ones of course.
Look in [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\MediaPlayer\Skins] în your device
There must be several string variables, we need "DefaultPortraitSkin" and "DefaultLandscapeSkin", there the paths to skin files, portrait192.skn and landscape192.skn (or 96 for non VGA devices)
Find the files in \\Windows folder and copy them on PC. Rename them in e.g. _portrait192.skn
and _landscape192.skn
Then open them in notepad (turn word wrap off in it).
Find "PlayPauseStop" and delete all in and later columns (remove everything after 0,0,0). This line should look like all other buttons defininitions. Rename "PlayPauseStop" in "PlayPause" and align all.
Copy the new renamed files back to device.
Create new registry key
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows Media Player\Parameters]
"DefaultLandscapeSkin"="\\Windows\\_landscape192.skn"
"DefaultPortraitSkin"="\\Windows\\_portrait192.skn"

It works with my Anycom headset! Thanks!!!
Just make sure you replace every number 192 in the trick with 96 (as the Blue Angel is a QVGA device). Oh, and the double backslashes in the registry strings at the end should be single backslashes (and don't include any quotes in the strings).
Tried it, and it didnt work :-(
I think i did it right, ill double check after dinner,
any one else had any luck with hacking the registry thing?
i spoke to soon, well sort of
Doesnt work with windows media player 10
but does work with TCPMP :-D
which is the better of the players anyhow :-D
So result :-D
hoping for success

i have portrait and landscape in both 192 and 96 (4 files)
do i edit all 4 files? could i get something to copy and paste?
using wmp10. not too comfortable with reg edit. can try but any thing i need to know?
thanks for directions, hopefully i'll be ok
i only eidted the 96 ones
i wasnt to comfortable with regedit, but i used a program that allowed me to edit it on the pc, to make it easier.
i wrote a very bad guide how i got it working with tcpmp ( a better player than wm10)

if it helps
but it didnt work with wm10 with me once i done this tho :-(

I really don't know if it's possible on the Blue Angel... More recent devices already have some kind of headset/voice command support, only using a different program, so you just have to make it use MS Voice Command instead. But the with the BA, you'd have to implement it from scratch.
Still... it would be excellent if someone could get it to work.

...but from other posts in the forums I understood it works only with HTC's audio player and/or WMP (depending on the device, apparently). Pocket Music is my favorite player so I was wondering whether the E100 will work with it on Polaris. Does anyone know? 10x.
P.S. Also, is any additional driver required for Polaris?
no.it,s only working with the default WMP.
maybe if someone knows how we can change some registry values to give pocketmusic path.

So when it is plugged its buttons are not recognized as hardware buttons which you can assign actions to? That would be nice...
ingenious (or any one else). I had a look at these and I think they look really good but have you looked at the W100? Are you 100% sure it's the E100 you want?
As far as I can see from comparing the specs on the Expansys web site, the E100 is just a W100 bundled with some cheap headphones for £5 more (I did say cheap!).
Don't most people buy these sort of adaptors partly to be able to use higher-quality headphones of their choice? Sorry if I'm off base here regarding your personal requirements, but the W100 (http://www.expansys.com/p.aspx?i=160194) might be the one to look at and then spend just a bit more on headphones if you don't have some already.
If my understanding above of how these two products relate to each other is wrong then I'd really appreciate the correct explanation.

I just got my device (Touch Cruise) from a shop in London just now and I bought a W100 at the same time. It is much smaller than I thought from the pictures.
I'm trying to be very careful about conditioning the battery on my new toy so I won't power it on until tomorrow but then I can start installing software and playing with it and I'll post some comments on the W100.
I know you said Pocket Music is your preferred player but have you tried PocketPlayer from Conduits recently? This is what I used on my Artemis and will install on my Polaris. It has full button mapping and you can assign multiple buttons to the same action, for instance the default mapping for <Volume-Up> is to assign it to the D-Pad <Up> key (not very interesting) but also to map it to a key that is displayed in the PocketPlayer mapping setup as something like "Media Volume+". This is interesting because it implies to me that PocketPlayer may be aware of media keys and these might be what are on the W100.
Anyway, if you don't like PocketPlayer then this doesn't help but if you do then I'll report back in a day or two as to whether I did manage to map the media keys.

Can the remote be used as an antenna
Can I use the remote only for the antenna so I can use my bluetooth headset to listen to the radio. They should have built the dam antenna inside the phone unit.

You can do it with any headset adapter. I have used the regular 3.5mm converter with many formats of headset and all give god fm radio performance, even the short earbud sections. Then you can listen with your stereo bt headset wirelessly

Never heard of it, frankly. But I checked it out and it seems to be a good player. It even has support for scroll wheels! I strongly hope you can assign the W100's buttons - it looks really cool and functional. Can you actually please post some pictures of the W100? 10x very much!

Thanks for that link. PocketPlayer is a great player, the media library is just fantastic, but as in the thread you discovered, I have tried the W100 with it and whenever I press a key on the W100 then the built in HTC Audio Player seems to catch the keypress and start up.
The good news is that the above demonstrates that it doesn't just work with WMP, it is possible for another media player (in this case the HTC one) to intercept and act on the keys. The bad news is that the HTC Audio Player is now our enemy and we need to find a way to wrestle control of the media keys away from it.
SInce I am a PocketPlayer user I am focussing on a solution to work with this. I have initially posted a request on the Conduits PocketPlayer forum and if I don't get a solution in the next few days then I will file a support request with Conduits and let you know how I get on.
Re pictures, I'm just trying to sort some other stuff out at the moment so I'll try and do that in the next few days.

Thanks for the info Julian. I think a lot of people are very interested in this device. Could you confirm other reports that pressing a button on the controller causes the screen to come on. This seems particularly pointless with a remote controller!
How about the FM radio functions?

You're welcome!
Re buttons, I just tried this and yes, the screen comes on (this was a bit of a suprise to me too). Press the red hang-up button and the TC wakes up and goes to the Today screen. Press the green answer button and the TC wakes and goes to the Phone app. Press any of the media buttons, including vol up/down, and the TC wakes and starts the HTC Audio Player.
Re FM radio functions, it all works pretty much as expected. Vol up/down works the volume (the FM Radio volume not the system-wide volume settings). The Play/Pause button does volume mute/unmute when in the FM radio app. The fwd/back buttons do the seek functions. The red end-call button switches to the Today screen and leaves the radio playing in the background; if you want to get back to the FM app then hit the play/pause button and it mutes the FM but also takes you back into the app so you can just press it again to be back listening but now with the FM app displaying on the screen. Finally the green answer button will take you to the phone app with the FM still playing in the background and again you can use the play/pause mute/unmute trick to get back to the FM display screen.
Edit (for completeness): There is also a mute button on the side of the W100. This has been mentioned in some other places but in case you haven't seen this .... the mute button has confused some people because they assume it mutes the playback and are confused when it doesn't work. I haven't tested this myself yet but apparently the mute button on the side is to mute the microphone not the speakers, i.e. to stop your caller from hearing you, so it is only for use during a phone call (I guess to mute the other party you can just hang up ).
- Julian
Thanks again Julian!
It sounds to me like this remote control isn't as well integrated with the phone as I would have expected coming from the actual manufacturer. The main reason I would want something like this would be because I don't want to look at or control it via the screen.
Am I correct in thinking that once a button is pressed and the screen switches on it is then active for touch control? So if it happens to be say, in a pocket all bets are off? What about if you use it with something like S2U2?
I'm sure you haven't been spending all your time with your new Polaris testing out the remote by the way - I'm just a bit annoyed about how this seems to work because it looked like the ideal accessory for how I anticipate using my Orbit 2 (when I get it).
Cheers,
Paul
I'm not having much luck with this thing on my tytn II on a custom, polaris based rom. None of the buttons work.
If audio manager is running, and you press the power button, does it just turn the screen off, or does it put the device in suspend mode like it would if audio manager was not working?
Hm... do you think there's a chance that somebody writes generic drivers for the W100 soon? Otherwise I might reconsider buying this simpler (though slick) adapter (HS U110+):
Just a quick note. I haven't gone away, it's just that my device is new so I'm trying to be very disciplined on the first 5 or so charge/discharge cycles to try and condition my battery so that means that once I put it on charge I leave it charging uninterrupted for 18 hours and that's what it's doing right now so I can't try anything, and hence answer any questions, until tomorrow. I'll try and answer a few things tomorrow.

I'm probably going to get myself one of these as well as the W100 because it is smaller and I'm not sure how much I'll use the W100 buttons assuming that I can get them working with PocketPlayer.
- Julian
Wow. if you have the device plugged in, then you unplug it, you get zero sound. you can still dial out, but no one hears you. of course this could be a problem wtih my rom, as i can't even use the buttons anyways, but arrgggg not looking good.
I've moved forward very slightly with getting the W100 to work with Conduits' PocketPlayer. My post to their forum elicited a suggestion that I install a PocketPlayer plugin downloadable from the Conduits web site that allows PocketPlayer to load Windows Media Player plugins and has an option that can be set that tells it to intercept WMP which I assume means that PocketPlayer runs the WMP plugins before/instead of WMP.
Anyway, after a bit of playing I now have the volume up/down working perfectly. These buttons now control the PocketPlayer-specific volume setting without causing WMP or HTC Audio Player to grab them and start up, and they even do this without activating the touch screen so it is in-pocket friendly.
Unfortunately the rest of the news isn't so good. The Play/Pause, Fwd and Back buttons no longer cause HTC Audio Manager to start up and grab them, they now just do nothing at all when pressed. I suppose it's progress, I've stopped another program from grabbing them, but I haven't yet managed to get PocketPlayer to see them.
Finally the red & green phone buttons work exactly as before, i.e. they switch on the device, activate the screen, and go to Today/Phone screen respectively.
Paul - re your question "Am I correct in thinking that once a button is pressed and the screen switches on it is then active for touch control? So if it happens to be say, in a pocket all bets are off? What about if you use it with something like S2U2?". Yes, your thinking is correct. I haven't tried it with S2U2 but I would guess that this would keep the screen at least locked although it would still be on and hence using battery power. From the above however, I'm hoping that if I can complete my mission and get these other three buttons working as well with PocketPlayer as the Vol Up/Down buttons do then the screen switching on is no longer an issue

Any way to play WMP over A2DP stereo bluetooth with device off/standby?

Hi, since coming from the Treo 700wx I don't miss too many things but I do miss not being able to continue streaming bluetooth stereo(WMP music) from the Mogul to my Motorola S9's with the device off i.e. just pushing power button once. My only option seems to be blanking the screen in WMP but that really doesn't lock the device from input. Is there any option to do this without enabling keyguard/locking? Maybe the HTC devices or the Mogul in particular just handle this differently than the Treo(among many other differences)? Thanks in advance.
I just got the Motorola S805's. I wish WMP had that feature built in. A program I've used before, that I can't seem to find on my computer, is http://www.handango.com/PlatformPro...=2&N=4294913805 95837&R=51696&productId=51696
This program worked perfect for the display issue!!
I have the S805's also (great headphones) and stream with SiriusWM5 which uses WMP. It's quite annoying to have the display on while streaming. I am not sure if TCPMP also has this behavior.
I just installed TCPMP and tried opening up an MP3 and putting the device in standby and audio pauses.
Man this blows.. even in Windows CE media players gave you the option to blank the screen to save battery life. With all the advances in software you would think this would be trivial.
yeah i just installed the trial version of PocketMusic. When I had it before I didn't have BT headphones. But I've tried just about all the settings I can think of, and all the results pause the music at some point. at this point though, I really don't mind locking up the phone with WMP. but it is annoying cause it's having to hit several buttons vs 1
if i were able to get PocketMusic to work with the display auto shutoff that locks all the buttons, i would only need to hit the power button to access it again.
TCPMP works for this...You have to go into Options -> Settings -> Hotkeys -> goto the 2nd to last option & set the "screen on/off" to what ever button you like...Now when you are playing music just hit that button & it will kill the display.
On a side note...Anyone able to get SiriusWM5 to work w/ TCPMP on the new WM 6.1?...I keep getting an error saying "Player: Audio codec (windows media audio) not supported by the player!"
I am getting the same error with TCPMP

I stand corrected. Using my old method of using device lock that blanks screen while using bluetooth, when I would fast forward WMP wouldn't light up like b4. Now i just switched to the included headphones and when I put it in standy by it shuts off. I might try that link i posted above.

Since I know how to edit my own registry and don't need a cab it's not worth my time to further test. If it's useful to you then great!
Anyway.. here is the cab you requested:

awesome reg settings!! fixed the issue for me. Tried pocket music and like the EQ functions but will probably stick with WMP now that it will play in standby. Thanks!! Once again this forum comes through for the Mogul cult!!!
These settings did not work for me, the WMP stops and the device powers down. How did you get it to work?
I ended up using armstrom's Devicelock v1.2, a very clean solution to turn off the display and lock the buttons with one button press.

I assume this isn't phone specific? Ive always wanted to be able to shut the screen down to conserve power but still listen to audio
Not sure, maybe dcd version or verizon related? My DCD 2.1 works great in standby with WMP streaming over a2dp with those reg edits.
Try the HTC Audio Manager version1.02.919.713 and the program allows the phone to sleep while still playing without any changes. It also uses about half of the ram that wmp uses when the program playing with the library loaded up.

can someone make this into a cab?
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\MediaPlayer\Preferences]
"UnattendedPlayback"=dword:1
"FastCacheReserve"=dword:00800000
"LocalCacheReserve"=dword:00800000

I can only find UnattendedPlayback in the registry. I can't find FastCacheReserve or LocalCacheReserve. Any ideas? Should I just change the UnattendedPlayback to 1 and not worry about the rest? Thanks
Thats what I did just changed it to 1 and reset and it worked.

That's what I used on my Apache (before it fell off my motorcycle on the freeway ). The HTC Audio Manager works great with the screen on or off.

Headphones inline control skips and callsback?

Hello everyone. I have the skullcandy FMJ headphones but when i double click the inline control to skip track, it also calls back the most recent dialed number simultaneously. Does anyone know of any way to fix this? Preferably a way to disable the callback function?
download headset blocker from the market and you'll be good to go.
Thanks for your help, but I'm not looking for something to completely disable my headset as I'm not really getting any phantom calls, rather I need something to get around activating callback and next track at the same time.

What you want is actually Headset Button Controller, it'll allow you to change the stock behavior for double click plus it adds triple click, click and hold, and several other functions (or not, your choice). It's like $2-3 on the Market and there's a trial version I think. I use it with my MEElec M9P and it works perfectly. I'm surprised the app isn't more widely known since this is something manufacturers rarely get right on Android. Oh and it'll work with the stock music player and/or other players of your choosing.
If that's too steep (really?) there's a couple free music players that let you alter this behavior within the player only, I believe Winamp or dbPowerAmp do that, not sure. I like the stock player and it's integrated lock screen controls.

I use Headset Button Controller with my Sennheiser CX680i earbuds and it works great to control the button functions. You can even have it open an app upon cable insertion or preset volume etc. Great app.
Swyped using 2 cores and 3 Ds
Thats exactly what I was looking for Thanks!

[Q] Volume reduction?

Now, I fully understand why LG implemented an automatic media volume reduction upon plugging in a headset. However, there are people such as myself who don't use a wired headset, but do use the port for a line out for other things (external speakers, aux input, etc) and kind of need the volume maxed. I have been poking around the settings for a couple weeks now, but haven't found anything that seems to disable that feature. Am I just missing something, or is it permanently enabled and just something I have to live with?
I have Tasker automatically adjust the volume for me.

I've never played with that, but it's worth a shot, I suppose.
Does the "safe headset volume" option in Sound settings not work?
I've looked in that menu multiple times, but haven't seen that. For what its worth, the phone is running SnowJB, so it could just be a missing option in that particular ROM. I'll look again though. Wouldn't be the first time I looked straight past a setting
Ah, my mistake; I'm on SnowJB and upon looking it actually isn't there, and I must have been thinking about CodefireX.
Odds are you'll have to wait until there's an AOSP rom up to your particular standards to get that option.
Maybe it's an option with FauxSound?
Two ways around this that I've found.
One is Tasker, like someone else mentioned. That might be overkill if you don't need Tasker for anything else. It does a lot.
Another option I've used is "Headset Button Controller" in the Play Store. It's really for changing the functions of buttons on a headset or headphones, but it has a function to turn the volume up to a specified percentage when you plug something into the jack. I think it's $1. Works great.
Oh - and with Faux Sound you could potentially boost your gain so that even with the reduction in volume you still get a good signal. But be careful b/c when you actually turn the volume up all the way, it might be too much.

Yeah, I don't want to drive it into clipping territory
However, as it stands, I think I may just ride it out, since as mentioned before, it's just an annoyance. And yesterday it was announced that the newer versions of SnowJB will be based on the official JB release, the setting to disable it might very well come back.
