2.1 Contact photo bad quality / pixelated - XPERIA X10 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

After the 2.1 update, the photos manually added to my contacts are in very bad quality when the person calls (Full screen call)
Is there any workaround or is it just to wait for SE to send out a fix?

Yes this IS bad!

not only bad too bad.................

Mine were exactly the same, as I'd backed up my contacts to my memory card before the update.
Solution is sadly to just go through the contacts and edit the photo again, put the same on back on and its fine, back to normal.
Im guessing its the way the contacts info has been compressed onto the memory card!

They're bad if you use the default Facebook app for the contact photo. If you change them to use timescape Facebook for the photos they look significantly better.

Sometimes for me was even the same when i restart my x10 . but when you change the the pic its all okay and yea also sometimes when I change the picture the last used one stayed not the one which I add as new one ... weird ****

no its still pixellated even if you do that. but only when you are calling/getting a call from them

they are always pixeleted when imported just reaasign the same picture and it goes back to normal.

When you do or get a call, then the contact pics are always pixeleted...since the upgrade.
If anyone has a solution, so he can post it here.

2.1 Dialler showing all contacts

Is it possible to adjust a ROM so this isn't the case as it wasn't in all 1.5 ROMS? It's really starting to get annoying
Not that I'm aware of... I've not seen this in any 2.1 ROM, but I'll check out the apk for anything in the smali code

Cheers, it's not just me though is it? As when you choose which contact type to view under contacts it won't show the facebook contacts etc but if you view them from the dialler then all are still visable....

I have exactly the same issue, the facebook contacts dont show in the phonebook but show in the dialer?! Yet to find a way to stop them from showing.
I'm running VillainROM 12 btw, and apart from this little gripe the ROM is awesome!!!
I've been asking about this for ages... I thought it was only me!
Glad to see this thread even if theres no solution as it means I haven't gone completely loopy!
its also show sim contracts which are not in the people program. I turned of the view in people as im on o2 and they have preinstall number for bolts on and stuff like that but there still in the dialer and even if i delete them from the sim if i reboot they are back..
that the only thing that get on my wick with this new update.
It wouldn't of thought it would be to hard to solve as there must just be a slight change from the 1.5 dialler as they look identical?
It's in every 2.1 Rom I've used.... VERY annoying!
I've also come to realise that when trying to send a message whichever application I use it seems to use the same contact settings as the dialer, so if somebody has a different mobile number saved to Facebook it will give you the option of 2 numbers for them and It's impossible to know which is the sim, phone, Google or Facebook number... Grr..
Moved as not development.
Ok just hope it gets as god response in here
I guess not....
To best of my understanding this is a lost cause: The problem is obviously with the HTC phone application, but we don't have the source for this application so it almost impossible for someone other than HTC to fix it. You can try to bug HTC about it but I doubt anything will come out of it.
So is this a problem on official 2.1 update too?
Like others, this is the only real annoyance for me.
Would it not be possible to replace the application with the one that was used in 1.5 to solve the problem? It's a major oversight at the moment
Surely this isn't impossible.....

MMS - Portrait Picture Rotation?

Hey guys, whenever i send a Picture Message from a photo taken in potrait, it always sends the picture sideways. ie, all my portrait pictures get rotated 90 degrees, and look as if they were in landscape. My wife has a nexus one, and this issue is non existent. I use chompSMS, but this issue is also present in the stock messaging app, and handcent. i have looked through all the settings, but cannot find what would seem to be the answer. Any help would much be appreciated thanks.
no one else has this issue? or cares lol. Its driving me insane
Crop it before you send it. Works on uploading to Facebook. You can select the full picture but just crop and save and when you upload it the picture will be facing the right way. Strange but true.
But why is this specific to this phone. The nexus one doesnt have this issue. Why would samsung make us go through all this work to send a lousy pic message in portrait mode!
My iphone didn't do it either. But we can only hope it will get fixed on an update.

My iphone 3g, 3gs both did it properly, on at&t and on t-mobile.
I don't have the phone but I suspect it's using the accelerometer to tell how your holding the phone and then automatically rotating it after taking the picture. It's a feature but one I'd like to believe you could turn off in the camera settings? Hope that helps.
I have noticed the same thing, but I have no idea how to "fix" although I suspect its the custom camera app
It's not the messaging app's problem. It's the camera. If you were to take a portait picture, then plug your phone into your computer and view the pictures, they would all be sideways.
It's a really stupid issue that should not exist.
it pisses me off too, if you go into the gallery the pictures are saved the right way but as soon as you send it, its incorrect
Anyone know if this will be resolved in the froyo update? or if there is a hack to fix this?
would his be fixed if I changed the stock to the captivate's camera? Or a different camera app

I have the issue with the stock messaging app in CM10 (10/29/12 nightly) on my Galaxy S2 (Hercules). I know that this is a thread for the Vibrant, but I am looking for solutions as well. I have found that Handcent properly displays pictures taken in portrait mode, but would prefer to use the stock messaging app as the Jelly Bean app has the pop-up/quick reply feature that I used Handcent for.

(How-to) Increase MMS image file size limit from 300k to 2M or 5M

I've seen a few people ask about how to increase the MMS file size limit so I figured I'd post up this easy way to do it.
Download GoSMS from the market if you don't already have it installed
(I've attached Screenshots for you to follow along)
Go to Settings, click the "Advanced" tab, scroll down and click "MMS settings"
Click on "Maximum MMS size"
Set to desired file size limit.
Then press back button
Check the box to "Preserve image resolution"
And BAM, your done. Easy Peasy.
Even though I have no 4g here in Phoenix AZ, I usually have it set to 2M. It usually takes a little longer to send on 3G but I can confirm that it does in fact send.

Yeah check with the person who receives it how big of a file he gets if ever gonna get that massage unlikely so. What you send is not what you get even when send to yourself try it.

I have, and when I click on the image I sent myself or my girlfriends phone, it is not grainy and the pictures are nice and big, not almost thumbnail like.

My point is if you click on details info size would not be the same as they were sent

This is good, but trust me. A few years back, people were walking around the office taking video and sending inter-office e-mail. One I liked and tried to send via MMS to family. No good. I then took like 10 second video to send, same thing, no good as it was too big.
Take 15 hour video and attach to e-mail! Then send to:
[email protected]
[email protected]
[email protected]
(whatever, you get my point!) but it does the same thing! The only thing bad with Sprint is, you do not have use of your phone while transmitting! My "15 hour video" comment was a joke (and you would be stupid to try it) I did like 2 minutes of HD and it tied up my phone for like 10 minutes or so? WiFi would likely be better?
Well that's a good point but when comes to sending an email attachment just use regular email and every smart phone is tight to email account anyway and accomplish is the same, the struggle is how to send mms and either the phone or provider on either site compresses the attachment.

Oh, and one last thing to remember, people that are on data plans! (My mother and my AT&T peoples with iPhones!)
Hey Guys.
I've been looking at how to do this for ages but...GoSMS is all well and good but, I like the stock SMS app...Its a little more...lets say, less "permisiony"...
But how can one do this change with the stick SMS app?? Is there an XML file you can edit?
Thanks.
Did you ever get any resolution to this? I'm on a Samsung Galaxy S4 Google edition and definitely want to stick to the stock messaging app, but outgoing photos attached via SMS from the camera are compressed to garbage. They're tiny and horrifically artifacted... it's killing me.

No fix for this then? i just sent a text on my one plus and its 90kb, danggg
I just tried this on my VZW S4 and it seems to work for sure at 2mb. HOWEVER, when attaching pix it does not give any means to pick "gallery" so that I can pick images to attach from their files, instead, taking you straight to what appears identical to the factory installed "picture" app where all images are shotgunned onto a single HUGE page. Can this be fixed?
Other than that, I love the app as it does give a better detailed report with each post time and DATE stamped as well as a little green check to indicated received. The stock messaging doesn't do that and also will not allow you to request a read receipt without getting the same audible notice that you get when receiving a message.

[Q] Why do the assigned pictures to contacts look so bad?

Thank you everyone for taking the time to answer these type of questions !! No matter how good you leave the quality of your photos when you assign them to a contact and that contact calls, the photo looks very grainy. Is this due to a crapy HTC phone.apk? Is there a way to get the photos to look better other than installing something like, full screen caller I.D.?
I've noticed this too. The pictures that are linked from my Facebook contacts look fine, but the ones I took on my phone or come from Google contacts look bad when selected as contact pics

I downloaded full screen called I.D. and it allows me to save the contacts as HD pictures and it looks great, I just do not like how it has taken over my messaging as well and I have to close it to get to my normal messaging program.
Been a issue for a long long time. Even back on the EVO .

What seems to be happening is it scales and compresses the picture to look good as a tiny thumbnail (to save space) but then blows that up for other uses so it looks bad.

I have gone through that thumbnails folder before and that seems to make perfect sense, but someone dropped the ball there at HTC. Well, I just hope someone realizes the huge mistake that was and corrects it. Thanks coal!!
You can drop a script into your int.d folder to run at boot to prevent the blurred contact pics. I've been using the script for a while. I snatched it from myns old 3.5 rom. Not sure If I can post it because its there script. But if you dl the rom and extract it you can find it.

Jellybean High Resolution contact icons DO NOT SYNC properly

Last night once we got the JB update, I took the liberty of going to each one of my of my contacts facebook, saving a high res picture of them and then adding it to their contact profile in my phone from the SD card. I'm that guy that has to have good looking pictures for everyone when they call.
With ICS we got a bump in contact icon size. However when you switch roms and your contacts get sync'd to the new rom, their icons are blurry and low res like hell. This was supposedly fixed in Jellybean. So as I stated above I took the time (almost 3 hours actually) to update some 200 contacts.
I just want to let you guys know, don't waste your time, it's not fixed rofl. Googles contact sync feature still completely decimates high res pictures into 3x3 pixelated bogus.
That is all. -___-
All of mine are high res....just dont be in a hurry to sync everything or they will look like crap...Ive tested this with several installs...set up your google contacts when you first boot, nothing else...give the rom time to settle, especially let the sync icon stop..do your google play, whatever while you wait....then setup facebook with "existing contacts"...give it a bit to run and you should have high res contatcs..

I did exactly that when I discovered they didn't sync in high resolution. I did a factory format and started over and they still synced in low res quality.
Thats odd, cause Im sitting here looking at mine and there is a huge difference from ICS....Last night when I only set up Google then played around for awhile I noticed how great they looked...today when I reinstalled and rushed through the setup they looked horrible...reinstalled again and took my time and they look great again....

Only Google....leave everything else alone for a bit...
This pic looked horrible on ICS....(sorry about the dog as a example )
If you want proper hi-res contact photos, use a real JB ROM like CyanogenMod or an AOSP ROM. Contact photos will always be hi-res once you update the photo to a hi-res one.

How they look after being synced
How they look after re-adding the photo after sycing is 100% finished
See what I'm saying? It's doing butchering the contact icons. I'm not sure how you're getting them to sync properly but I've added the pics from the contact app and also at google.com/contacts @[email protected]
Wow, not getting that on mine...sorry dude.....are you stuck on 3g only maybe?? I dunno...Ive got 4g and thats the only other thing I can think of, amount of data downloading...

I uploaded them through both my phone and google.com/contacts, which is where they're pulled from for syncing. You'd think high res icons at the source = high res icons at the destination but I'm not seeing it lol.

its an app that lets you use proper photos from FB and syncs them to the contacts, although google has talked about this before and there is a fix in the works but dont expect it until key lime pie

While Facebook sync is a great option for people who aren't picky about their contact icons, a lot of my friends have pictures of them kissing their girlfriends, or blowing out clouds of smoke or have profile pictures that aren't even them. I'm just confused to why google has said this is fixed, when it is not. I've done a factory wipe multiple times now and cannot get the high resolution pictures to stay high res once synced. Only way to do it is to manually set the picture phone side, and not google side.
If I back up my contacts through Titanium Back up with the high resolution icons, that theoretically would preserve everything, correct?

If you're having issues just use Haxsync like mentioned above..I always used Haxsync but since upgrading to JB all of my photos are Hig Resolution already even after syncing(its even pulling high rez photos from my facebook contacts) So i've yet to re install Haxsync.
