Im not sure if it was in 1.6 aswell, but after updating to 2.1, i noticed in the settings under accounts and sync, that there is an option to disable background data.
i disabled it to try prevent me from getting charges because i dont have a data plan. But when i go to the market using wifi, it says that the market requires background data to be enabled.
my question is that if i enable background data, but disabled data roaming and auto sync, will the market downloads count towards data usage?

While on wifi, do I need to turn off Data in order to save battery? I *think* the phone will use the wifi if its available anyway instead of cellular Data but will actually turning off Data while wifi is enabled and connected save battery?
The data is automatically turned off while wi-fi is connected unless you have some rogue app that insists to use cell data connection.

Note, this is only if "wifi sleep policy" is "never".
Otherwise, it'll go to the cell connection when the screen is off.
The only app I know of right now that can force cell data traffic while wifi is connected is the Market when it does its initial compatibility checks. (Downloads still go over wifi.)
I rooted my phone yesterday using MyGKernel and installed droidwall.I allowed all apps to use wifi and disallowed all of them from using 3G but android background services still use data.I got background data and autosync disabled. Also I noticed that after rooting my phone, the screen turns on by itself in random times.I'm running Android 2.3.6,please help !
go to settings - wireless and networks/mobile networks/ use packet data, data roaming. both off, to disable data via cell provider.
i dont know about the screen issue, some app waking you unit up?, you dont need droidwall if you disable packet data.

But I need the packet data to be on for a vodafone app called vodafone buzz. Its an app that lets me connect to fb/twitter/msn/yahoo/gtalk for 1 dollar a month and I don't get charged for internet data. But the problem is the android services use data for no reason even with droidwall enabled.Oh and I fixed the screen thing,it was a problem with an app.

yes its a fact of Android you have data on so they connect .
try Better Battery Stats to see if you can pin down further .

is there a way to see which app uses most data rather than the accumulated wifi bandwidth usage? i think i saw this option before, or i am just wrong.
Try watchdog 3G
afaik, apps should be listed in data usage in settings, however it doesn't is there anyway to reset it?
Hi, I was wondering how exactly to restrict WiFi and cellular data for a certain app. I was easily able to do this with my old phone, but I can't find it in settings.
I've noticed I'm not getting all notifications when I'm using mobile data. I have to open the app to check if there are any.
As soon as I turn on wifi they all come in. I've checked several settings, but can't find why this is happening.
These apps have no battery restrictions. And restrict data usage for these apps is set to WLAN and mobile.
Am I missing something?
