Messenger App Review - Vibrant Themes and Apps

last couple of months there have been a increase in BBM-like apps which include:
Pmessenger
Pingchat
Whatsapp
LiveProfile
Kik
they all have similarities and differences between each and also similarities to BBM
Best Overall
I think the app that get us close enough to bbm like features is Pmessenger.
Pmessenger is the only one that actually uses PINS ( liveprofile does to but it has lp in front of them). Unlike all the other apps it doesnt use ur phone number or email..its completely standalone. With a lil UI fine tuning, removal of the ads it, and a better name it can really take off.
Best Name
that would go to Kik..its catchy..easy to say..has a nice ring to it lol..thats what most ppl like.
Worst Name
that would between Pmessenger and LiveProfile. Pmessenger is to long..its tiring its nerdy..and liveprofile is too much of a name for a messaging app if you get what i mean.
Best UI
has to go to Whatsapp..its clean very clean and gets to the point..i would have went with Kik but its basically a refurbished pingchat ui
Worst UI
would go to live profile..it has too much going on with all the taps.
Connectivity
hmm i dnt really know..im in jersey at the moment and it could just be my signal..smh yea i kno
Features
they all have the same type of features such as..being able to send video, audio or pics, push notification, multi-platforms, and they let you know when ur im has been read.
Kik is the only one that lacks those features besides the last one..but its also the only one that has its on set of smiley faces..and bbm users know its ALL ABOUT THE FACES..lol
pls share your opinions

im using pingchat, its pretty good...

I'm waiting for hello messenger to come to android.... Best (looking( with group chat, and is multi platform as it is already out on bb and iphone.

good AIM Client

anyone have a good aim client?
great, now does anyone have a free aim client?
thanks
I've tried them all... I think AIM 2.0 is still the best one one (for AIM only).
IMO the best is Slick. It has the most features and is still free!
AIM 2.0 (UK version) if you want AIM only... its YEARS old now, but it runs just fine on the Titan.
If you want a multi-IM client, I use Palringo and I love it. I've tried just about every IM client available, and Palringo is my favorite, especially since it takes up minimal memory.
only problem with aim 2.0 is you cant see mobile users or see their text if they im you
Palringo can't see the icon when users are on mobile either, but you can see the user as being online. I wish we would have an IM program that can compare to other devices. we need something like the sidekick or jivetalk. With jivetalk and sk, you can see buddy icons and when users are mobile. I can only wait...
The biggest problem is that pretty much all the IM clients out there for Windows Mobile are relatively new. It will take some time for them to come out with new version that increase their capabilities, etc. There is no perfect mobile IM client out there right now.

i see...so far im liking slickim, also tried palringo for a bit and that seemed good too. loved the addvoice and addpicture functions.
both those programs were pretty much what i was looking for, so thanks alot everyone
can anybody tell me where to get aim 2.05.5
I've tried EVERY AIM client on the market, including AIM 2.0, IM+, and the VeriChat PPC beta. I just tried Palringo and I'm really surprised. It's very very nice. Give it a shot!
I have agile and I just tried Palringo. The picture function works fine on both. However, the Push to talk is a little better in agile b/c I dont have to download the talk. In agile, I can just click the link and i plays.
But, Palringo supports the little messages under your sn that the newer aims have. Agile doesn't b/c they haven't updated in awhile.
I just tried palringo and I'd still recommend agile messenger. Agile is more like the sidekick, and handles multiple conversations. Palringo only lets you talk with 1 person at a time unfortunately, and loses everything you said or was said to you when you switch to another person. I also like how Agile lets you have vibration or a custom sound when you receive a new message whereas palringo was a quiet "dink" sound with no vibration option. Palringo also seems to frequently disconnect claiming "You have been logging off and on too frequently" - according to its forums they have been having problems with AIM in particular for a few months. Palringo looks like one of the better looking free ones I've tried, but if you're willing to pay (and agile is unfortunately rather expensive, especially for phone software) agile seems better to me.
Palringo does look like something to keep an eye on though.

True multitasking possible?

Hi all,
I'm wonsering if true multitasking is possible...
I have been using the sgs2 for a few days now.and its.my first android.phone.
Im very happy with it but jus missing one feature...
When Im watching video in a browser or app Id like to be able to quickly do something else while the.audio keeps.playing.
Is this possible?
I do know that some apps have this featur (audio players etc.)
But id like to do this with the browser or cnn app
Greetings, dutchy

I'm not sure if it would be possible, although the video is kept in memory, it has to close in order to open another app, I don't think you could have audio playing in background during a different application. My thought, though I'm still kinda n00b-ish with Android myself.
@SgtDutchyNL
It's possible for sure, but browsers intentionally pauses/stops playback when they're "minimized", because this is what most people want in most cases. I don't know any browser app which does run flash content in the background.
Shame there isnt an option for it, maybe its possible by editing some code?

Coming from a Palm Pre (WebOS) I really hate multi-tasking on Android devices, switching from app to app sometimes doesn't even let you carry on where you started.

Really, I've never had an issue switching between browser, sms, email, contacts and maps, all whilst listening to music.
As for video in the browser, Flash has been built to only run whilst in focus to stop the battery from draining when animation is running in a tab in the background.
To help the issue of multitasking, try installing wavelauncher on market. it is exactly like the wave launcher in webos. but it still wont fix the fact that android will close your program in the background when it needs more memory (which is why you have to restart from scratch when you "alt-tab" around)
I have a Palm Pixi Plus which I use for work email. No doubt WebOS is amazing when it comes to multi tasking, their ecosystem(h/w and s/w) should mature but I doubt if it can reach anywhere near Android. For that matter I doubt if M$ or RIM or Intel can ever achieve this.
I've been using Android for the past 2+ yrs. I must admit Android's muti tasking is rubbish. All we need is a simple button X (similar to Windows PC) to close any damn app than closing/killing in a different way in each app/phone. Its confusing at times. Good thing is Galaxy S II is a very good phone. A complete package must say..

You guys misunderstood, i dont hate android's multitasking, in my opinion it doesnt match that of webOS as that was the mobile os where true multitasking was derived from. As gd as the android operating system is, Galaxy s2 is making me like android more.

I've also noticed the problem when using sites like mega upload where you have to wait a certain amount of time before downoading a file. If the counter is on 30 seconds, I think I have time to check an e-mail or a few tweets while waiting, so I do that and when I come back to the browser the counter is still at 30 seconds...
It's usually not a big deal but I find it amusing that android fanboys made fun of iOS because it doesn't have true multitasking, although from what I can see android just saves the state of your apps and restores it when you go back to the app... it's OK in most situation but it's hardly multitasking.

Most sites like that do this on the desktop now to keep your focus on their ads. Not sure if megaupload does but a lot do so i could just be this.

Yes, this happens if you try the same on your computer too.
Huh ? Never happened to me on the computer but I'll check (it would make sense and seems doable w/ javascript), it could be that indeed.

No, Android has true multitasking, but that doesn't mean every app should or have to use it, does it? If I browse through internet, I'm on a site with dynamic Flash/Javascript content and I exit browser then I want it to freeze any dynamic content to minimize power consumption. This is exactly what most of people want in most situations and this is why you have problems with Megaupload. It's possible to create a browser which will run Megaupload counter in the background, but no one has created one so far, because it wouldn't be that good.
You all should understand this isn't a technical issue, it's a design concern. If you switch/exit an app then OS (no matter: mobile or desktop one) has to do one of the following:
run it normally in the background
pause it
close it
give user a choice
Each of above has its pros and cons. Desktop OSes use first option, because they don't care about power and RAM consumption. They also use last option, because on a big screen, with mouse and full keyboard there is no problem to add such controls.
But using same solution on a phone would be a disaster, I think. Older mobile OSes use third option: they close app after exiting it, they don't have MT at all. iOS is somewhere between pause and close. Android is between pause and run: it pauses apps by default, but gives them a possibility to run in the background if they want. And this is a big difference between iOS and Android. On the iOS app can't run in the background even if both its developer and user want that. On the Android it depends fully on a developer choice.
What I want to say is: there is no single, perfect solution to this problem. If clicking "home" button would not pause an app by default then OS would be a piece of **** to me. Even if it would give me a possibility to easily pause/close an app - still POS. Pause should be a default action to make OS easy to use, so I think Android design is really good. One thing which could be done is to give more control to user. E.g. an option to resume/not pause an app on demand, so it will run similarly to foreground mode.
And how does work this awesome MT of webos (I don't really know)? Please, don't say it runs apps in the background by default - if so then sorry, but as I said it's a POS to me.

Thanx for this very informative post.
And indeed I think the best solution would be for each app to have a default behavior as it is right now, but let the user force the app to keep running at all times if they need to for some reason and don't care about the performance hit.
Ty for all the info, but still, I just want the option to run some app normally in the background, its annoying when youre watching a movie and quickly need to check mail, i like having it playing on

Intresting to me that good old WM 6.5 was true multitasking and could run for the best part of a week in standby Android in all it's forms, with background program managment, can barely do a couple of days !
Interesting in the video that I didn't see any evidence of true multitasking
Like some1 mentioned already, android is a multiple task/thread OS. So you can pretty much do anything. It's down to the developer. If you wanted music/vid to play in the background when not active in foreground tis easy to extend your application to have a service that constantly runs, and the app (UI) is just the controller. A good example of multitasking is seeing 2 things update where both are either critical data or processor intense. An example being your widgets update while live wallpaper is doing something. So to me, there is either multitasking or not, not really true multitasking. I think from the video of webOs I would call it a task/app/thread visual controller, and not a few words like "true multitasking".
Just my brain dumb on the issue

What exactly does 'Sense' mean?

From what I have found here, I believe that 'Sense' is simply additional eye candy and pretty animated widgets (i.e. Weather). Is my understanding correct? Thanks in advance for your replies and have a great day!
Thanks,

Sense does add a lot of eye candy, but it also has a lot of deep intergration into the phones core features. Most of not all the intergration can be added to stock android via 3rd party apps.
As an example Sense uses a different bluetooth stack than stock android, it makes it easy to use but it also lacks certain profiles like being able to connect the wii mote to your phone.
A better example is simply the way sense handles contacts. Over all I think the experience you have using sense is much better than stock android.
HTC has done a very good job giving the mass market what they want in a phone; something that is more polished than stock android and adds all the function they want to have with out needed to download a ton of apps.
Now if you are one that wants to control every detail of the phone and have time to go find the app that does exactly what you want it to do then aosp roms or stock android is best for you.

It's not just a different stack, they use an older (broken) version of the bluetooth protocol, which is why some things do not work. Some of the kernel modders for the thunderbolt updated it though I believe.
you know, the 5 senses.. the ultimate in... sensation!
/me can only dream anyway
sense is what htc runs on top of stock andoird. it adds a dock lockscreens, widgets, etc, as you said eye candy. and like the guy above said they have there own kernel that controls bluetooth other stuff. because it runs on top of android sense roms are generally larger and some lag more but it really depends on the rom. for example synergy roms are faster than some aosp roms that ive used.
I haven't seen anything (free) other than Sense that can pull all the contact information from my company Exchange server. Everything I've tried only gets the email address, not physical address and phone numbers.
It's one of the main things that keeps me away from running CM7.
Sent from my ADR6400L using XDA App
Sense also has one of the few emails clients I know of that can actually correctly forward emails and attachments. Every time I tried with CM7 it just plain wouldn't forward crap, not the email, not the attachment. Sense? Forwards both like it should. Plus it does email zooming so that those pesky HTML emails get resized and can be scrolled around better than the AOSP email client in CM7.
Note: I am talking about "Email" not "Gmail" which if Google made the email app a user app instead of a system app, they could maybe fix the issue across the board.
The Sense UI also has great social network integration. No need to download a facebook or twitter app, just sign in through the Accounts and Sync and use the built-in apps. Even those contacts sync with your phone contacts.

Few things i need to know before i buy a Lumia 920

Hi,
I own a lumia 800 and i love it. Lately tho im very frustrated with it due to some core functions. I just want to know if these problems exists with windows phone 8 .
1. Messaging hub. Sometimes i receive the messages, sometimes i dont. And not just facebook, even the ones from windows messenger. I know that one doesnt work anymore or something, so my next question would be how good does the skype messaging is integrated in the message hub?
This is THE biggest concern of mine btw, i cant play message roulette. I have to check the facebook app so often just to see the messages that im not getting with the messaging hub. Is ridiculous !!!
2. Wi fi not staying on when screen is close. If it was a future i would understand, sometimes it stays, sometimes it doesnt, seems so random that i dont know what to believe about this "feature"
3.Skype not working in the background. No clue how this is possible, it works great with android, it works great with iphone, but not with the very company that owns skype? Is this fixed in windows phone 8?
I guess these are the biggest concerns i have. On paper this OS looks great but with so many hit and miss it makes it not worth it for me.
I really am hopping someone will tell me windows phone 8 doesnt have all these messaging problems, cause if they exists im just gonna drop windows phone and go back to apple. Would really hate to do that, i love all the good things windows phone has to offer , or at least is SUPPOSE to.
Thank you.
I don't use Facebook or Skype, but there is an option to keep WiFi on, and my mail tile updates as it should. To get an idea of messaging experience, search at answers.microsoft.com, WP8 forum.
I don't use Skype but WP8 doesn't allow any app to run continuously in background, unlike Android, which means the toasts we see when the phone is in lockscreen are push notification from the app server. The reasoning is to keep your battery life healthy and phone fast, but not every app has its own server, haiz. And Skype and WP are 2 different divisions, so yeah, they are like two cousins, not siblings.

I am using all the social networks that exist in WP8, and they r working pretty good. Now about FB - u will receive every single message IF u r to answer from ur phone. If some computer interrcepts the messages (u r online on some of ur computers, the messages might not all get delivered to ur phone).
As u were told, the WiFi can be set to always ON, no worries about that.
Skype and MSN Messenger are now 1, and it is always in the background, and cannot be turned OFF. At least I haven't found a way. There is just a possibility to hit switch accounts, and that way u r logged out.

Google IO What are you excited for?

Obviously im excited for Android N. I havent tried any of the preview versions. But I am pretty excited for the new notification system and the split screen and picture in picture.
Im pretty excited for the 2 new messing apps. Allo and Duo. I REALLY REALLY hope "Allo" is Googles answer to iMessage in that i can send files (of any kind), high res photos, GIFs, typing notifications, and read conformations. I thought Hangouts was gonna be Googles answer to iMessage but its a sad mess. From the demo though im not very optimistic. And the new features like drawing on your photos and the whisper shout seems pretty dumb. This will make Googles 4th messaging app (all of which are still current) Im not sure why Google just cant make ONE awesome messaging app. Its almost like they have 4 different messaging teams working at google making 4 different products instead of one team
Duo also looks pretty cool and will allow me to uninstall Hangouts as video calls were the only reason i still left it on my phone.
Android Auto on any android device. This is really cool to me since I took my car stereo out and and mounted a Nexus 7 2013 LTE in its place. Currently i have a mix of apps like Tasker to take care of all the "car stuff" but if i can run the entire Android Auto interface that would be awesome.
Android Wear 2.0 PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE let me run Spotify with out my phone having my watch connected to WiFi. And i hope the first gen watches like my Moto 360 1st gen dont get left behind with this update.
Google Home Hub (i think is what its called) Basically the Amazon Echo competition thing. This seems cool I dont know if ill get one. It depends on the price. If i can have it connect to my Belkin WeMo devices and if it has support to connect to the Logitech Harmony Hub theni might get one.
I dont really care about VR at this time and dont really see it going "mainstream" at this point.
Insta Apps seems cool but i dont really see installing an app to be a burden. This feature would be cooler on Chrome OS i think.
What are you guys most excited for and why?
