i can't find anywhere a widget\app that let u by pressing ONE button disable/enable 2g / 3g ....
only thing i found is "APPDROID" but it's diffrent it's disable\enable internet APN ...it's not the same ..i want to be connected but to EDGE (2G) for messaging and weather / email ... i don't need the 3G ON always.. specially when the signal in my area drops to 1 or 2 lines (edge is better reception in my area) and OFCURSE....the BATTERY ! (since i use 3g from yesturday ..) oh my god !!! i didn't do ANYTHING ! maby only surfing the net 4 min ..from 8 AM(100%) till 11 AM it's now on 82 % !! only cos of the 3G on all the time ...
what can i do ?

well, if that app doesn't work for you, use quick settings. it's pretty reliable (although, sometimes you may have to restart your phone before you can get 3g back).

i programd it to go to 3G when i open internet/MARKET
what it is doing is givving u that error "no connection network found" "NO SERVICE" u press that notification and it's bringing u to the screen to select network operator and this takes 1 min till 2 ! to find ...!!
that's not the point ...it's even faster doing it manualy than using that app option ...
is there only "one button press 2G/3G"

From what I've been able to discover, the inability to directly switch 3g on/off is an Android system issue with 2.1. This may have changed with Froyo, I'm not sure. The best I've been able to find is an app that resides in the notification bar and gives quick access to the settings page.
I use DCSwitch (free version) and it works quite well with the Vibrant. I disable 3g while at work to save battery, then switch it back on when the day is over. Never had any problems using it.

hi all,
just recently bought a hero and sorry for the noob questions. any help will be greatly appreciated.
1.) How do i activate the green notification light for any new notifications? so far i can only use the trackball to flash for a number of minutes and thats it.
2.) how can i permanently use 3g as a signal without switching back to edge? i prefer 3g because it is faster, but when i use the web, it reverts to edge making it slower when browsing. i want it never to switch back to edge just 3g.
3.) How do you update radio and rom? is it the same with winmo? i have a topaz and im currently using hero.

So far the only answer i found was the notification light as a bug or a defect. line switching is still unsolved and updating.

1) It works as it is stated in the user's manual. How can you state that it is a bug or defect? Funny... Just because it works that way on Magic or G1 does not mean that it has to be the same on Hero.
2) You cannot as your phone will automatically switch between them when one another is not available. You phone will select 3G only if it is available around where you are. If it switches to Edge/GPRS/whatever, that means you don't have 3G signals around you.
3) There are 1.000 posts on the forum here regarding updating ROM, etc. Search is our best friend.

You can force HSDPA, but you do so at your own risk!
You need to download AnyCut from the Market and create new shortcut to the activity "Phone Info". From this short cut, you access a screen which gives lots of diagnostic info about the phones state and there is an option to "Set preferred network type". By default this is "WCDMA Preferred", but if you want to force to always use HSDPA you should select "WCDMA Only".
Note if you do this, your phone will never drop back to 2G, even if a 2G signal is available and a 3G one isn't.
I wouldn't advise playing around with any of the other options in this screen unless you know what you are doing!

very interesting. because for my topaz i always set it to wcdma only. willing to give it a try. where can i download it? do i need a gmail account for this? cant find it any website where it can be downloaded.
Android software is downloadable via the Android Market application on your hero - any purchases are made by using a google checkout account which is set up like paypal so you don't need to enter your details all the time...

I'm currently in bahrain the problem and I'm using SGS2 for 3 months and I'm having this problem
the problem is when the phone in idle it will switch automatically to 3G and when I'm going to use it lets say I'm going to open WHATSAPP or CHATON it will connect to H or H+ if its available .. the problem is when its trying to change from 3G to H+ its not going to get data like the green arrow will get stuck and it will try to connect ... this problem happens only in the chat application like whatsapp + kik + chaton when i write anything its not going to deliver (not every time) but most of the time ..
i wiped the device .. i wiped everything .. i tried every single modem ! i tried many rooms .. i tried to change the CSC ... i disabled fast dormancy .. i disabled hsdpa with this code *#301279# to 3g only .. i changed the band using *#*#4636#*#* !!
i did everything i guess and I'm still having the same problem !!
i even called the carrier and they don't know anything about this problem and what is the reason !
is it a carrier problem? i was using iPhone with 3G connection it was working fine

I am with you on this one. Same problem, upload arrow stuck, no connection. Sometimes when this happen, I can use browser without problem, but no luck with application trying to use data. Sometimes it's just completely dead for both browser and applications. I am on STOCK KI3 ROM, KI3 MODEM. I had this issue from KF4 up. I also tried all the potential fixes, but still get this issue occasionally. When the 3G network got stuck, battery drain like hell. Maybe apps are in the loop of trying to get connection.
Any solution !?

i have the same problem i.e data loses connection. after a fresh flash of stock rom and factory reset , it starts working fine for a week or so and then the shyt happens again . i can tell u , its not a hardware issue, it more like a software issue.
i m not good at android but wen i used to run squid on a linux machine as a proxy server , i recall i had to clear a log file to make data flow possible every few days. i think android has a similar issues some logs files build up or some **** like that.

I was wondering if there was a How-To thread on doing this? Or could someone help me do this? I couldn't find any from my search's.
Current ROM: δ-HyperDroid-Androidmeda-v3.0 (with petsaj's surgeon)
This feature is already there in the Hyperdroid + petsaj surgeon combo I use. The reason I ask on a how-to for this is because, for some reason, custom ROM's that have this particular feature are the only one's I can use to get 3g data connectivity. Otherwise, I always get this irritating "Refreshing SIM data" pop up, which eats up battery, and heats up the back of the phone.
I'm still not a 100% on whether this would be the actual reason, or whether its a an issue with my carrier, but i want to give it a try so i can know for certain.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks. But I'd like to find out how to do it myself; to test and see if this is whats causing issues with 3g data connectivity for me. I think even Simple & Clean v2.x has this, and so do a few others.
But I don't think MIUI ROM's have this (not sure about this again - from the MIUI's I've tried, doesn't seem like they do).
My main concern has to do with 3g.

It's as simple as changing some png's... Download my surgeon, navigate to /vrtheme/SystemUI.apk and see which ones are blue and which ones are grey.

Ok. I was just having a look at the pngs in the Androidmeda 5.2.xx and the pngs in /vrtheme/SystemUI.apk (of your surgeon). Only difference I see is the colours are green in the base while they blue in the surgeon.
I dont think this could be the coz of my 3g issues.
Petsasj: any idea why I am able to use 3g only after flashing your surgeon? Like i said before, if i flash the base ROM (or any ROM for that matter), either of two things will happen:
1. In GSM/WCDMA mode, it'll search for my 3G network -> the 3G icon shows up, and instantly disappears. I am still connected to my 3G network, but there is no data connection. On checking the "Status" in Settings it shows up as Mobile Network->Connecting.
2. In GSM/WCDMA mode, it'll search and connect to my 3G network -> there wont be a 3G data connection. "Status" in Settings says Disconnected.
For both the above instances, this "Refreshing SIM data" pop-up keeps on coming. The phone heats up at the back - battery goes down the drain! Very annoying. 2g works though (with data connectivity).
But if I flash your surgeon (and only your surgeon btw, the other surgeons dont help me with this issue ), everything works! 3G, 2G, switching between the two... !
Would u have any idea as to whats causing this??

Guys..I recently noticed that if i keep my apn/data turned off for (say 9 hours) and then turn it on the notification power widget of CM7, it simply refuses to turn on. Why is it so? issue gets resolved on reboot. any fix ? On testing it with a variety of SIM operators ( Airtel, TATA Docomo, BSNL,UNINOR,IDEA), I found this issue doesn't occur in BSNL..that indicates it is not a ROM fault. I haven't tested it with vodafone & aircel as of yet !!. So I want if any of u (Indians on this thread) have faced this issue in any other region as I face it here in Bhubaneswar(capital of Odisha) !

1 - make sure you are using the latest version of your ROM with a compatible kernel
2 - Try to toggle the mobile internet from Settings > Wireless and networks > Mobile network settings and try switching between different network modes. You can also toggle this by costumizing the status bar drop-down menu from CyanogenMod settings.
if m right ..u try to toggle the internet connection from status bar..............if so then toggle internet using the power widget that comes in cm7....hope it helps u

@Lanis & kssod : I have tried enabling it from settings/ notification power wiget (status bar)/ power control widget on home screen & even used extended controls widgets for the purpose but issue stays!!
Update: Guys I found Vodafone too (like BSNL) doesn't face the issue. Edge gets turned on immediately overnight. Not only that, it's 2G speeds r even better than Airtel & Idea (my previous best(s)). gets 28 KB/s on phone. yet to test on a PC any idea about its coverage in rural areas ?
Strange that none on this forum never heard about this bug.
Easiest way to get internet back is to switch to flight mode and back, no reboot needed.
This issue appears since v10 till the latest v20.This is not SIM operator related bug for sure.
try using a signal reset app from the market.............switch off the internet and then reset the signal and then switch on the internet again.......maybe it will work

Short answer, no it isn't real.
Proper answer... well yeah it's real and you might briefly get 1 extra bar signal. All it does is turn on airplane mode and your connection is reset. It is illegal/breach of your terms of use to actually tamper with/change the telco settings. What you can do on your phone is one thing, actually changing stuff to do with the network like the app suggest simply does not/cannot happen. Even it it did work you'd stick out like a beacon saying hey look at me I hacked your network.
for those who don't believe me download the app, start it, then home button out of it and you will see airplane mode activated - So save yourself the the time of downloading it and just flick on/off airplane mode.
