Mediascape face recognition problem in 2.1 - XPERIA X10 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Im having some problems with mediascape,
I went to tag a photo on it, however I noticed, whilst my phonebook has all facebook contacts hidden, the list of contacts you can assign for mediascape photos have not been hidden, and the only way to scroll the list is by swiping your finger constantly until you find the name (with 600+ FB contacts, thats not easy).
Once I got alllll the way down to S, I went to click on the name, and it did nothing. I tried again, and nothing. tried a different name, nothing. tried cancel, nothing. The only way I could do anything was by pressing the back button.
I tried with another contact, without any scrolling, and the same issue occurs. Has anyone else encountered this? it's really annoying as I've been using face recognition since I got the phone....

I've also just noticed if I go into my pics and then scroll on the bottom to the end to the friends tab, it has assigned 10 of my random facebook friends random pictures from my album as pictures of them...... :s

In the beginning I experienced the same problem as OP. I think this might be lag due to face recognition being done on all my images (lots of them). After some time, nametagging is smooth.
Two major problems:
1. The need to scroll through absolutely all names, from all contact lists! Couldn't we get an alphabet bar as in the phonebook?
2. When displaying nametagged photos, some tags are hidden behind other tags. Some show up when I rotate the phone (photo scales up/down). Others do not appear at all. Except that those pictures are shown in the Friends category... Some tags are incorrect, and I have no way of deleting/changing them!

Weird contacts sorting problem

Hi All,
Just bought hero last week and transferred my contacts from E71 to Hero using Outlook and HTC Sync.
The problem is, People program mixes up the list of my contacts. Here is what I see when I launch it:
My Name
A random set of contacts starting with A to Z
A..
B..
C..
..
..(and so on)
Z..
- a divider line -
Remaining contacts with A
A..
..
- a divider line -
Remaining contacts with B
B..
..
..(and so on)
- a divider line -
Remaining contacts with Z
..
- a divider line -
Why does Hero shows some contacts without dividing them into alphabet? I have checked that all my contacts are "Phone" contacts and they show up alphabetical in Outlook (and was in E71)
are the random ones at the top just ones with Company names??
I know that happens on mine if i sync across contacts that have nothing in the 'Name' field in outlook, and just a company name instead.
No they are totally similar contacts. All of my contacts has name field and I do not use non-Latin characters. This is actually pretty weird. I'll try to add some screenshots when I get back home..
Thanks for the response

That happened to me as well. I realized that for those contacts, I only had information in "Surname" field (even the first name was written there) thus it would add a space before this info and the space makes those contacts float there. This also applies when you have first name but no surname. HTC Sync sucks. To fix it, you can open these contacts in Outlook, change the name, change it back to original but in first-last name fields, save again, and then click the dropdown "File as" and select something else and select it back to "First, Last name" and then sync again... Something like this

Thanks much man!
This really helped. Since the number of irregular names are limited, I've edited them on the phone.

With Regard to Weird contacts sorting problem with HTC
I had the same problem as leventbb, etc on a brand new HTC Thunderbolt...and the old posts were 2 years ago so apparently HTC hasn't fixed it. For those who run in to this as well, here is wat I found. As much as it seems the contacts are out of order, in my cast it was because there was nothing in the last name field so HTC for some reason, but not in all cases put a space in front of it. So...if I chose to go to the very beginning of my contacts, the order was: those with nothing in any of the name fields, those which I just explaned that show now as having a space in front (only on the card, if you open it up it looks fine); those which start with numbers and then regular A-Z. When I tried copying the first name, delelting it and pasting it back and saving, it went into the correct A-Z place, but then all of a sudden was back in the "wrong" place in front of those contacts starting with numbers (because of the space that is back...). I am assuming it's because the Thunderbolt just synched.
To fix it, I found that by placing my cursor in the Last Name field and using my backspace key, that even though it acts like nothing is there, when I save it, it goes back to it's "right" place in A-Z and stays there.
Hope this helps someone else. It was a real problem when I thought contacts were missing when looking alphabetically, but could find them when I searched...

Contacts suddenly not showing a-z list.

Hello,
On my photon the phone's contact list is not listing a scroll selection of a - z like it userd too? Similar to the ipod touch/phone you could see while scrolling down your contact list a, b, c, d, etc. on the right hand side and you could tap the letter you needed to get to the contact quickly. For example i want to call John and instead of scrolling all the way down to my "J"s i would just tap the letter "J" on the right hand side and it would list all of the contacts in "J".
Anyone else have this feature randomly missing or know what might have caused it. I just noticed it this week.
I am rooted with no custom roms or bootloaders, the issue happened weeks after my root?
Its in the contact display options, I think its the only show contacts with phones setting. Needs to be unchecked. You must have messed with some contact settings. Happened to me too.

Thanks man that did it, too bad it duplicates contacts from facebook so one has a number and the other is just there account info that you cant add anything too.
That is probably the reason i messed with the settings in the first place.
Thanks again!

[Q] Very low res pictures in caller screen

Hey there, this is my first HTC and Evo. Actually it's an HTC Evo 3D GSM. Rooted and on a stock 2.3.4 rom and stock kernel.
The thing that bothers me is the low res caller screen. I linked many Google contacts with their Facebook accounts. And set their caller pictures as well. But they are in so low resolution that actually i can count the pixels. I couldn't find an option for this and it's pretty annoying. Do you guys have the same issue, is this an Evo 3D thing, or is it just me?
You can see it in attachments.
Mine is slightly pixelated, but not even close as yours. See example below:
Yeah, mine has no hope. But i figured out something. The resolution of the caller picture has the same resolution which is used in little, tiny thumbnails on "People" section of contacts. I'm pretty sure that i dont have to change them manually. This shouldnt have happened at all. This is my third android phone. First one was Galaxy Mini, second one was LG Optimus Black. None of these used to have this kind of weird problem.
Mine does the same thing. It does look nasty.
If you have the contact picture stored on your sd then you can just edit the contact threw the people app and reapply the picture. I go threw the same thing after I wipe cache & davlik cache. It takes me like a good 35 to 40 min to reapply all the pictures in my contacts. I just leave it untill I have some down time to reapply them. Unfortunately I haven't figured out why this happens or a fix for it so I just work around it. Hope this helps.

That's terrible quality. I haven't had an Android phone yet that had half-decent contact photos UNLESS I was using HTC facebook contacts sync (as shown by tgruendler's post). I think it's a known problem with Google that they've failed to even address at this point. Once the contact becomes a google contact, the photo goes to crap. Even if the contact is stored only on the phone and the pic is on the sdcard, you're still probably going to have a bit of pixelation going on. My advice is use facebook sync on a sense rom. Sucks but that's the only thing that's ever really worked for me.

This use to really bother me when I first got my evo4G on release day. It's a very annoying issue that google refuses to address even know there is a huge thread about it on the google message boards. They just won't fix it. Sooooo since google is worthless here is your best work around that I have been using for a long time. Anytime you set a contact picture they get uploaded to google at which point they are are resized and over compressed which makes them look like crap.
Step #1 - Delete all contact pictures from your google contacts so they are blank.
Step #2 - Turn off facebook linking via htc sense & the facebook app.
Step #3 - Create a duplicate contact for the contacts you want to use high resolution pictures for. Very Important - the duplicate contact needs to be a phone contact & NOT a google contact. It should prompt you when making a new one.
Step #4 - Name the contact the exact same as your google contact. For example if your google contact is "Bill A" you would only fill out "Bill A" on your phone contact. Leave the rest blank, no #'s or anything.
Step #5 - While still in the phone contact you just created, set a picture on the PHONE contact. (At this point you should have all your high quality pictures saved & names on your sd card. I like to do 500X500 for mine) For best results use same amount of pixels across as well as down.
Step #6 - Once you have done that you need to link your phone contact to the google one. Most the time the phone will suggest this but sometimes it gets them wrong if it does just clear suggestion. Make sure when you do the link you start in the phone contact and not the google one.
Step #7 - You now have only 1 contact entry in your phone book with a high resolution picture that will show when the caller calls you or you dial out. The picture will not be backed up to google.
Tips: If you flash or reset your phone a lot, make a backup of your PHONE contacts only to your sd card before wiping. Don't backup anything else since the rest will be saved on google. Then when your done flashing, simply import the backups off your sd card. At this point you will have to manually go through and re-link the phone contacts to the google ones. Again make sure you set the link in the phone contact, not the google one. Sometimes when importing the phone backups it will have the phone number it backed up from the google contact. You have to delete the phone number from the phone contact or you get duplicates when sending texts which is kinda annoying.
I attached a full resolution screen shot below of one of my contacts looks like. I wish stupid google would just fix this but they don't seem to care. Hope this was helpful, good luck.
I've had this bug in so many ROM's.
I always get it fixed by either installing it if it isn't, or syncing the Facebook for HTC Sense. That one seems to get the crisp pictures, but the Facebook app is a bad one, that seems to be the culprit for pulling the blurry ones down.

Use Friendcaster. It has an option for hi-res pictures. Its not crystal clear, but its way better than what you are seeing.
Hey guys, thank you very musch four you replies and I'm sorry that I couldn't write a thing for days. I was out of town for a few days. Whatever...
First thing I did was to unfreeze the Facebook for HTC application and freeze Facebook for Android. I linked the contacts with Facebook with HTC. The result was a little bit better than the old settings. I mean, not crystal clear but at least I can recognize the person calling me. But still, it's not like the way I want, or it should be. What a shame for Google. It's just a photo. Why do you have to resize it that way?
I believe this is solved in ICS. Hi-Res Contact Pics Was A Feature.

Very annoying contacts issue

Hi guys
I have a very annoying issue. I am on android 4.0.3. I set up my contacts to show only phone contacts as I always have. I had sgs2 before so this is just another unit.
So, I setup a contact picture for one special contact and I can see the small thumbnail next to the name. Ooook. Now, when I call or get a call from that person the photo doesnt show. Just the regular samsung calling screen. Never happened with another unit.
Second issue is with the ringtones. No.matter what song I setup for a contact, phone only plays the general ringtone.
I dont understand what is happening. I dont want to use a 3rd party app, for such basic function.
Any idea is welcome. Thank you!

Issues after flashing .376 stock FTF

Hi all,
Just wondering if this has happened to any others, or if these are commonly known issues? I can't find too much information around.
- Phone hangs quite often now, usually when waiting for the keyboard to pop up, and quite often using Facebook Messenger app. It comes up with "XX has stopped working. Do you want to wait or close?"
- Camera focus. The option to touch focus is now gone. And I can't manually focus onto things anymore using the physical top button (hold halfway). It tries to focus (goes in and out) so i know that the lens mech still works, but it just defaults back to a blurry non-focused position.
- Custom show contacts list is now gone. Previously I could eliminate/hide contacts that had no phones numbers. Because my contacts come from my Gmail, it includes all email addresses as contacts. Now the option to filter out the ones that are not phones number contacts is gone.
Quite annoying, I'll be looking to downgrade I think.
Thanks for any help or advice!
