I pulled the source from CanogenMod's github last night and made the modification
to show the missed messages on the lock screen.
this is Froyo only
install by adb push to /system/app, this will replace the Samsung app.
Updated 11/7/2010
fixed MMS crash
included required classes in the source zip
just import into eclipse and start playing
with the code.
Hey man, just wanna say thanks for this! It works perfectly as described and love the mms notification icon to be green instead if black. Great work thanks
Thanks dude works great! I wish there was an option to disable the contact icon in the chat, but that has nothing to do with your fix. Thanks again!
Here is a slightly modded version:
CHANGES: blue envelope in the status bar for incoming texts, TW MMS icon (white envelope), removed MDPI icons, and optipng/zipalign optimized.
Very small filesize (~600kb) and runs great on my JK2 Froyo ROM!
PS: All credits go to OP, I just enjoy tweaking a few things.
MMS crashes while SMS works. Just FYI

MMS (picture) crashes for me. SMS works great. If you don't know what the source is its best just to not mess with it. It's for developers so they can make changes as necessary to the apk.

Which rom are u using ?
the MMS crash was caused by a missing class file usually in the system
framework on eclair but not froyo, should be fixed now.
Works perfect, thanks a lot!
is the mms package tweaked to support the puzzle notification?
If it is, is the source configured the same way or is the source completely unmodified?
I'd like to get an unmodified mms if possible, the stock 2.2 mms is so blurry (preferably already compiled). thanks!

did you move it to /system/app then reboot into clockwork and delete dalvik-cache? (may only need to reboot, but safer to delete dalvik-cache)
Is there a way to rename those files outside of Root Explorer? I have Droid Explorer and am not having any luck.
Also when I try to adb it in, I get this error...
failed to copy' c:\signedMms.apk' to '/system/app/signedMms.apk': Read only file system
just wondering, what is special about the CM6 messaging app? what are the added features, and benefits of this? Also is it possible to get some screen shots?

For those using the espresso sense that hate the stupid faves app and are tired of having a dead button on the home screen, this is for you. I remapped it, and have attached a couple different versions. One maps it to open the stock contacts app, and the other to the stock browser app.
I'm working on getting rid of faves all together, and would like to have the old htc favorites tab in the contacts app and the htc favorites widgets too. But I dont know if I can do it, we'll see. For now though here is the new Rosie.
Instructions:
This was taken from a stock rooted build of espresso 2.1 and is only known to work on such.
Back up your old files first!
adb shell cp /system/app/Rosie.apk /sdcard
adb shell cp /system/app/Rosie.odex /sdcard
For those with system apps odexed, you'll want to get the appropriate Rosie.apk and Rosie.odex.zip. Rename them to Rosie.apk and Rosie.odex. Reboot into recovery, then use this adb code:
adb shell mount /system
adb shell rm /system/app/Rosie.apk
adb shell rm /system/app/Rosie.odex
adb push (your saved file location)\Rosie.apk /system/app
adb push (your saved file location)\Rosie.odex /system/app
For those of you without separate .odex files in your /system/app folder, I used a de-odexer on the two files to join them, but have not tested it yet, as the build I am running is odexed. Grab the appropriate Rosie_noodex.apk rename it to Rosie.apk reboot into recovery and use the same code, but ignore lines 3 and 5 (the ones with .odex in them!) and then post here to let me know it works.
Sweet!!! Works great on CR_Mod_1.35.531_OTA Full ROM, thanks!!!

Yes I am. But I'll look further into it.
Not to be negative, but this could be remapped to something more useful. Contacts are very easily already accessible through the left shortcut. You could better help yourself and others by making the the faves shortcut a text or web shortcut.

Hmmm, are you sure you got the right .odex? The rosie has the pics and the odex tells it what to open. It worked on mine. But I may have uploaded the wrong one I'll look when I get home.

I used an odex script available on the forums here (got it forever ago, dont remember where, do a search for odex) that will odex apks from inside the rom, as the odex file is dependent on that specific rom. Though I edited the script to suit my needs, the functions are still the same as it uses the dexopt-wrapper to do it.
I got rid of the slide and never tried the 3rd sense roms, but if I still had it, I wouldn't use the rom anyway, as they're still buggy..
I'm a dev interested in making an SMS version of this shortcut.... could you give me a jumping off point? I don't believe the source for Rosie Espresso is available so how were you able to replace this shortcut? You can't just change the icon and all the layouts are compiled.

Use smali and baksmali (search Google for them) to decompile the odex or the apk if its been deodexed then once decompiled check the folder called out>HTC>launcher> or some order like that then look for the launcher.smali not launcher1 or 2 etc etc. Now use a text editor and open launcher.smali then do a search in it for faves or the faves app real name and change the fields to the messaging app name and action the save exit and recompile add to the apk or reodex depending on the rom

You install go contacts ex, replace shortcuts on your homescreen with the ones for go dialer, go contacts, clear the cache of the dialer and the contacts app, and you should have a dialer replacement, its not perfect, but at this time its better than the stock one at 240dpi.

OK so when you hang up, it shows old dialer, so, install no call log classic
Set it up to go back to the Go Contacts EX dialer, Contacts list or the home screen, and thats your dialer sorted.
Another dialer that works well is RocketDial. It can do this on its own, there is an option in its settings to choose the action when a call ends.

I was able to change the density to 220 without any crashes and FC after flashing the phone.apk attached in this thread but noticed that there is a rapid drain in battery after adjusting the screen density. i am using stock battery by the way...

Hi all, I have not created the mod or apps. So all credit goes to the people where I gathered it from. Just thought of sharing it here because it was hard myself looking for it all the way. And since I found it, I'd like to share it with you guys.
ICS Notification Bar. Flash in recovery and you're good to go. NANDROID PLEASE. (Changes phone settings to stock ICS too) (Credit to VladBelsky, got this from his forum): http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?h42x34ar49xk5t5
ICS Messaging Application (Doesn't replace your default app, freeze it in Titanium): http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?g1rufbrrkbra6sb
ICS Gallery Application (Install as a regular .apk file and it DOES NOT support 3D pictures for obvious reasons but still a good eye-candy software to have on your phone ): http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?fb79eppsoxfki3d
ICS Browser - For-Real (Install as a regular .apk file BUT IT DOES REPLACE your default HTC Sense Browser so I recommend you make a backup of it. Though as far as I've noticed, it's faster, better and smoother in many ways.): http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?2a4k523jvufjkw7
ICS Contacts Application (Flash via recovery, would not replace your regular HTC dialer): http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?oyo19m5afnhef09
ICS Email Application (Not that much of use to me but still thought of sharing, Flash via recovery): http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?8s8cs5xf0imxjqx
ICS Calender Application (Flash via recovery, not sure if it replaces the regular calender or not): http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?dbzviddbbkgwb7m
I found Contacts and Email on a One S forum. Tried out on my Evo 3D and it worked perfect. Though I got disappointed by the Contacts app as it still uses the regular call screen by HTC Sense. Lets wait till a complete port shows up. Other than that, the app works flawless.

Confirmed. If you only want the Status bar and not the Settings to look like ICS AOSP, simply remove the Settings.apk.
I'm sure it'd work if you'd only want the Settings and not the status bar.
There are no FC's or anything like that. If you want battery percentage, you can just flash the battery mod for ICS.
This is bad ass thanks! Makes it look way better while still having sense

Now if we could only get AOSP lockscreen, I'd be SOLD.
EDIT: Percentages did not show after I flashed the ICS battery mod.
Also, I renamed my mms.apk to mms1.apk, and copied the AOSP mms it into system/app as stated in 2nd post.
Except I never used Titanium, so no freezing. It did indeed completely replace my mms app. Works great.
Edit 2: Various replies below are currently offering up to a $50 bounty for a fully functioning CM MMS.apk for SGS4 TW
EDIT: This will work for regular SMS, but crash for all send/receive MMS. Recommended to wait until MMS will work properly.
<Insert typical disclaimer here about possibility of messing up your phone. You assume all liability/risks.>
Attached is the MMS.apk from the latest CM10.1 nightly. It includes things like emoji, notification quick reply, notification mark as read, custom vibration settings, and pop-up SMS.
I am successfully running this on my stock, rooted, AT&T SGS4.
1) Root SGS4.
2) Use an app like Root Explorer or a simple 'adb push MMS.apk /system/app' to get the MMS.apk onto your phone.
3) Drop MMS.apk into /system/app
4) Reboot. On reboot it will REPLACE SecMms, the Samsung one with hover view. However, since the Samsung one uses a different file name, if you simply remove MMS.apk from /system/app you can revert back (as SecMms still exists)
5) Profit
Extras: Yes, it can still be used with Multi-window. No, hover view does not work. Yes, you can also just run the apk and install it, but I always feel safer dropping them in myself.
I was so excited. It installed and appeared to work great but it crashes when sending MMS. This really is the single think I want more than any other is a stock SMS replacement.

You probably have two lock screen pages because you added two, this nor the other sms apk would add another page with a clock on it.
Go to your lock screen and swipe across the clock to the left until you see the plus button then hit it. Add a random widget.
You'll now be at a zoomed out state of all the pages of lockscreen widgets you have.
Drag any page up to the top until it turns red to remove it.
As far as quick reply i don't think so edit, i think thats just how it is. The default app notifies you of a new message on the lock screen and you click it then swipe to unlock and thats just how touchwiz works, you'll also notice no quick reply from the notification bar using the samsung sms app.
Using this apk you should be able to quick reply from the notification bar meaning if you just have swipe to unlock and no pattern or pin or anything you can pull down the notification bar from the lockscreen and hit the reply button there and that should work.
I uninstalled Mms.apk and went back to original Samsung messaging and that extra page disappeared. First pic is a my lockscreen looks with Samsung app. Second one is pic of lockscreen with custom mms.apk installed and with the original lockscreen being a second page. Ideally I want the Samsung lockscreen because it shows active alarms.
I am able to drag the Samsung screen to remove but it still shows after. I can't drag the other screen nor can I make the Samsung page my default page when I turn on the phone
I also disabled multiple widgets.

Never mind. All I had to do was rename SecMms.apk.

Glad you figured it out
does it still crash?
I found that mms works when I use Rom Toolbox to attach the pic
Edit: Attach the pic using Rom Toolbox....once it attaches to the text, click view and have gallery open it to view it. Press back. Click send. Done.

My idiot self deleted secmms.apk by accident instead of mms.apk to revert back. Does anyone know where I can get the secmms.apk?

Previously I was running Cyanogenmod with what I guess is original Google dialer.
Is there a way, how to install it, or aftermarket, which is as close to it as possible, without root?

Customize Dialer?
Is there a way (preferably without root) to modify/customize the "in call" screen on the Galaxy S5. I am not talking about the Dialer App itself but the screen that comes up once you place the call. I want to be able to move the "end call" button from the top right spot to the top middle spot to make it easier to reach with either hand.

You cant do it without root cause it needs to modify system apps.
If rooted it is possible. I themed mine like this which will be available in alliance roms next update

Hello,
I read this today somewhere and this is exactly what you meant. I get my S5 tomorrow so I have notbeen able to test it yet, but it should work on any kitkat device.

I got the Google dialer working on my S5... You need root and if you want to make any dialer fully 100% with out any use of the stock one, you need to do a lot more then just have the app in the priv-app folder. Once I've worked a few bugs out, I was going to either package it as a zip, or give it to a rom development or two to use as an add-mod to their rom(s).

Wondering if you can share the steps you followed to get GOOGLE DIALER working on the S5 ? I tried to install by putting in Piv Ap, changing permissions and rebooting - and no luck - it FC's when i try to launch it every time.
If you can share the steps you took to get it working - even if I have keep my original phone ap for taking calls and GOOGLE DIALER for making calls - that would still be cool -
If you think it is too complex and difficult, I understand - but if you can share what you did - that would be very cool -
thanks

Well.... So far:
The good
• App will open with no crashes or force closes
• Search will search your accounts for contacts and Google for people / businesses.
• You can place a call
The bad
• Samsung app is still used during a call.
• Samsung app is still used to receive a call.
• No contacts button
The Ugly
• Removing Samsung's in call app will still allow your calls to connect, but you get no GUI so you can't hang up.
• Removing Samsung's phone app (not being used anymore) will cause zero signal and two com.phone error popups on boot.
• Google Contacts FC when opening
Bonus: info on other Google/AOSP apps
The Google and AOSP SMS/MMS app can be used and fully replace the Samsung one. Why is this good news? Because those apps have the quick reply (popup when you get a message) Kind of like the iPhone but much better :victory: I have a few different themed versions and get some more and will do a post with the info (and credit where credit due) tomorrow.
The AOSP browser likes to FC
Other working apps: Calculator, Clock, Email (even exchange bypassed), File manager, torch, gallery, pretty much everything else besides phone and contacts... I'll add them to the same post as the messaging app tomorrow. (Will be flashable zips)
On good news... Once the CyanogenMod ROM is finished for S5, it will be MUCH easier for me to get the dialer and contacts working fully 100% on Samsung's touchwiz framework.... I had them working flawlessly on my S4 before I busted the LCD... Nothing beats touchwize framework with Google/AOSP apps and style

I dont usually use aosp apps but to let you know stock mms does have an option to enable pop up messages and includes a quick reply too.
For phone it does use both secteleservice (secphone) and incallui for the phone features. That is why deleting the teleservice resulted in no signal because that app basically does the phone signal and pre call functions while the incallui controls all incall functions. So you would need an app and probably libs to replace both.

Any chance you can share that black Seccontact apk. Looks Great. I've been trying to theme it myself without much luck.

And where would the setting be for the popup with quick reply?
If you're thinking the quick response snippets, that's not the same thing. And looking at the settings for the stock MMS app (see attached screenshots) there is no pop-up setting or anything close to what the aosp/Google MMS app has
