Have 3 Gtabs running Calkulin Clemsyn como v6. Two run great, but on one I randomly get blank notifications & when that happens VTL Launcher partially freezes (can switch screen, open some apps but eventally will totally freeae). From the point the blank notification appears I can't get into the VTL menu to restart VTL & while holding Power brings up the power off option, it would let me pick a selection. I have to hold power to turn off.
I notice that the version of VTL is 1.61. but there is a newer version out, 1.6.5. Clemsyn says on his post (in development) that trying to change the default launcher could cause sleep of death. Not sure if that means the process of changing it while the system is running or if he means swithcing to a different launcher!!!
To the question....Can I use ADB to overwrite the vtllauncer.apk in /system/app/ with the newer version, then reboot & it work correctly?
Try it and tell the rest of us if it works. Since the "old" vtl is a system app launcher in v6, there's too much of a chance something will go wrong.
What you can do is this. Install another launcher, something like adw or whatever. Then use system app remover to take out the old vtl. Then install the new vtl. Then voila you have the new vtl.

More on the blank notifications. Seems to be two different ones. One points to the time in the Notifcation Bar & the other appear below the home icon on the notifcation bar.
I've also duplicated this on a second gTab.
Seems to do it most when moving icons near the notification bar/trash can
Oh, I know what you're talking about now. Go into vtl settings, choose none for swiping up and swiping down, and then also choose to never hide task bar. After this, the blank notification will never appear again.
Replaced VTL. So far so good!

Downloaded & installed ADW Launcher from freewarelovers.com. Downloaded System App Remover from Marketplace & installed. Switched to ADW Launcher. Ran System App Remover & backuped up original VTL then removed it. Used Rootexplorer to copy new version of VTL to /system/app & changed permissions. Installed the new version. Rebooted & selected new VTL as default, then removed ADW & reboooted. All the things I've tried so far appear to be working normally. I'll do more testing & report back.

There isn't a "none" option in Swipe Up/Down Actions. I have Show Previews, Open/close App Drawer, Show/hide statusbar, Open/close notifications, Move to default desktop/Open notification, or Open App!
I'll try the Open/close App Drawer - Up & Open/close Previews - Down & see how that works.
Thanks for the help.

For those that are interested. I have sucessfully replaced VTL Laucncer (v1.6.1) in Calkulin Clemsyn combo v6 with VTL Laucher v1.6.5 from gojimi's vegan site http://vegantab.gojimi.com/vt-labs/vtl-launcher/ (see post # 5 if interested) on 2 of my 3 gTabs (granddaugher wouldn't give hers up long enough for me to do hers). I have used both extensively over the last couple of days with no issues. Feel free to test if you feel the need to upgrade. The only thing I did that I didn't mention in post #5 is that I did a backup in CWM before I did any of this...just in case.
Is an upgrade really necessary
I tried to up grade without success.
Is an upgrade really necessary? What is better with VTL 1.6.5?
It sounds like a lot of work?

You can,t do a direct upgrade because VTL is included as a system app...that's why you have to do the entire procedure.
Probably no big reason to upgrade...I did it because I thought it was causing the blank notifications that was locking mine up. If you change the settings in your VTL (above), you should be OK. If you want to see the changes between 1.6.1 & 1.6.5 you can go to gojimi's site.
Really didn't take long to do...maybe 15-20 minutes and I've only been using Android/gTab for about 3 weeks.
May be worth keeping in mind for when gojimi releases a version with more features, improvement or bug fixes.
THANKS...

Minor correction.
The reason why you can't just upgrade is because in order to upgrade an app the app has to be closed, uninstalled, and newer version install. You can't do that with a launcher if it's the only launcher available. That's why you have to install another launcher, uninstall vtl, then install the newer version. Otherwise, the system would crash and burn if you ain't got no launcher running.
The whole process should take about 1.5 minute.
(1) Install adw launcher.
(2) Press home button and choose adw launcher.
(3) Using root explorer uninstall vtl.
(4) Install new vtl.
(5) Press home button and choose vtl as your defalt.
How hard can that be?
Sounds Pretty Simple

That said, following the easy to follow instructions on your website, I was able to install a custom ROM, and do the GPS install.

While we're on this topic of the GoLauncher - how do you get the GoLauncher to launch, from the nook home, by pressing the hardware 'N' button twice?
I've seen that on a few videos, and wasn't sure how to do that.
edit.... nevermind found it.
I think most of the “new goLauncher theme” stuff is really just bonus options for wallpaper, etc. I found most of these things to be options in settings.
Rynek, you have to have the Homecatcher app, I was pointed to it by others XDA'rs. It is found on droid market. Works well.

Pull up the menu at the Go Launcher home screen and select the "Themes" option. It will pull up a window that has thumbnails of all your installed themes and a button to get more from the market. Just select what you want and go.

OK so the recent AOKP an (from what I hear) CM9 builds don't have the options to change the trebuchet launcher preferences.
Now I haven't researched why this has changed but I found a quick workaround.
0.) Need to have the Nova launcher installed
1.) Go into your Widgets set the "Activities" widget from nova on to your screen
2.) Scroll down an select Trebuchet then select Preferences.
3.) Click the new Preferences icon an there ya go

Nice workaround - i feel like i'm the only one in this boat as it seems like noone uses trebuchet anymore
I still like it, nice and simple - also has the fade effect when scrolling screens that other launchers don't have
Why not just use Apex ?

Its simple and has the basic options you want a launcher to have auto-rotate,multiple animations, force resize.... I mean really wtf else do you need.
I've stuck with it because I flash like a crack head multiple times a day so the simpler the configuration the better.
I believe I might have an actual fix but I'm mobile an I'll need my lab top... an ya I googled forever an had no luck... kinda like I'm having finding a good example of the pegasusq parameters...

Is the menu list in the trebuchet app ? I was going to add the settings option back into the menu when we had this issue on task's AOKP but he fixed the issue since then. although things may have reverted in build 40, im currently in the middle of flashing it.
Just FYI, good old Any Cut also works if you don't want to install a whole other launcher just for the one widget. Add the Any Cut widget, then select Activity, then Preferences.
Also, Any Cut shortcuts can be placed inside folders, unlike regular widgets.
For a laugh, try making a shortcut to the "rocket launcher" activity - not exactly practical, but kind of fun

First, I'm not a developer (any more), just a novice user of a Nexus 10.
I've been playing with various widgets, putting them on the home screen & building groups of apps to keep the screen simple,
so I can actually see my wallpaper. (Nothing special, just pics I like.)
Problem is that huge Google bar at the top. Is there an simple way to get rid of it, like the select-drag-drop for other home screen stuff.?
Also, there seems to be some limits on where I can actually put apps or widgets. Is there a way to adjust this too?
I'd really like to put a dashboard widget in place of that Google bar.
Finally, is there a way to disable Google when I select or swipe nearby the bottom of the screen?
This is a real pain-in-the-patootie when playing solitaire & the cards get near the bottom of the screen.
Thanks in advance. I could not find this anywhere in the Q&A forum for Android.
Try a different launcher, like nova, which will allow you to disable the persistent search bar.

Sounds helpful, if I knew what a launcher is.
I am soooooo out of date re: computers of any kind anymore...
Just go on google play and search "launcher"! It is the app which launches other apps, provides the app drawer, and many other setting options, like how pages scroll, etc.
Thanks!
Thanks for the info. I'll go see whats I can find, & come back here to make sure its a good one.

Sounds good, a real engineering solution instead of a workaround (not that there is anything wrong with a workaround).
How to I get to the root file system to modify filenames?
I'm on a Nexus 10. Any idea what app/widget/setting function to use?
I've got "androzip" which let's me see the file system down to a certain point ( /.) & shows a bunch of folders,
but crashes when I try to see what's in the folder named "root"

I just now realized that you suggest a launcher here... Doh!
The other suggestion about changing s filename may be good too. I suspect a launcher will be safer for me.
Yes, using a launcher is better. Otherwise you'd have to unlock the bootloader of Nexus 10, which will wipe all your data, then set it up all over again and restore backed up data, then get into the root filesystem and modify the file name of the app file, which can be too much since you say you're not experienced (unless you're interested in learning to do all that) The app is called QuickSearchBox.apk btw not GoogleSearchBox.apk.
Also, custom launchers like Nova and Apex launcher look exactly the same as the default launcher you're using right now, but have a boatload of additional features a lot of which you may find interesting and useful. The default (stock) launcher is very basic in functionality.

Much nicer than Android basic, more "toys" to play with & no Google bar at the top!
I even learned what a home screen actually is & have set up several for different uses.
Another fun time waster to play with beyond just games... would be nice to set
different wallpaper for each screen, but being able to actually see the whole
image is really nice.
I think I'll get the Pro version to get rid of other Google launch with the sweep/touch near
the bottom of screen- the answer to the second part of my original question.
Thanks to all who replied... I feel like such a noon at this point. These forums are truly the best place
to find/get answers to basics questions. The Help provided by Google is distinctly lacking in detail.
Now to search for answers to more questions....
damn. the stock launcher is actually pretty nice on the hydro edge at least for my pop but I want that damned google bar gone (BUT WANT google search and google now) I just want the stupid useless homescreen bar gone (its too small for him to use he can't hit the mic icon reliably) so I just put a regular voice search icon on the screen for him.
Grrr I hate when they "shove" things down your throat like that.

Agree with you
Is there any way to go into system and delete it all together?
You can't delete system apps unless you are rooted, which if you have a nexus device than this is super easy
Yes as mentioned before the simple fix is just use another launcher, there are many amazing ones to pick from often with a free version that works great
As for removing the bar from the stock launcher the easiest way would be to decompile the .apk and find the xml file for it and chances are change a simple bit of code from true to false but without ever decompiling this myself can't say how its set up. But in truth this may be more work than it is worth

Thread to discuss what apps you've disabled and any side effect. This doesn't require root.
To disable apps go to Settings > Application Manager > All, select App then select Turn off. All the disabled apps will then show up under Application Manager > Turned Off. Probably a good idea to reboot when done to make sure disabled apps are cleared from RAM.
Went through and disabled these apps:
Amazon (two apps with this name)
Amazon Kindle
Amazon MP3
Amazon Appstore
Audible
Caller Name ID
IMDb
NFL Mobile
S Voice
Slacker
Verizon Mobile Security
Verizon Tones
VZ Navigator
Deciding on these:

Someone please do me a favor and note the RAM usage before and after. Forgot to note before but my after is 725MB used and 1.7GB free.

I've been curious about this. I've used Nova Launcher for years, and I love it. However, there are some pretty neat features in TW for this phone (like the split screen view, some of the stylus stuff, etc.). Are you, or anyone else, giving TW a try, or just going straight to Nova?
My N3 will be in tomorrow so I'll experiment for myself. Just curious what everyone else was thinking.

@dclutter: I agree with with @YankInDaSouth, the widgets are all you give up. I went straight to Nova because I wanted to put a lot more icons on the screen (seriously 1080p & 5.7", and they want to put only 4 columns?), plus you can get some cool replacement widgets to make up for the Sammy ones you can't use. And, with Nova/other launchers, you can resize any widget, giving you more flexibility. Personally, I use Fancy Widgets for clock/weather -- I really like the MIUI skin -- and aCalendar for the calendar widget because it's very flexible.

That's great news. I'm really glad those features aren't dependent on the launcher. Like you, the ridiculously small grid on this screen is a big hangup for me. Plus, I'm so used to the 5 slot scrolling dock now that I don't know what I'd do without it.

If you want to do something really different, I just learned of a new launcher called Buzz Launcher. You can design some really unique setups with it, but what's really cool is it automatically saves the whole setup as a package file. So you can share it through the app, and browse other people's creations, then if you find one you like, you just apply it, and it downloads the whole layout, background, theme, etc. If it involves widgets or apps you don't already have, it just puts a placeholder icon and when you touch it, it takes you to the Play Store directly to said app to install (or you can replace it with something else if you prefer). It's pretty slick and there's a ton of different ones available, with more variety than you can imagine.
