Hi All,
Its that time of year when i should be looking to change phones on my T-Mobile business contract . My options are Omnia 7, HD Desire on an 18 month contract or Iphone 4 on 24 month contract. However this is the first time i have ever considered hanging onto my phone, as the HD2 still seems to be a fantastic bit of kit, and with modifications such as Cookies home tab it seems to get better all the time.
But if i get one of the upgrades and sell it, i would be tied to the HD2 for another 18 months.
I know its my choice at the end of the day, but i was interested to see what others would do ??

Hi everyone! I posted this in the main forums, but I wanted to ask you guys here specifically, since I've only ever spent time in the Vibrant forum. On August 1st, I will be eligible to be reimbursed up to $80 a month for my cell phone bill through work. I am currently on a TMobile Family Plan. To make things easy, I am going to go onto my own plan. I can pick any carrier, any plan, and any phone. If you guys were in this situation, what phone would you pick? Just curious, and would like input from people I'd trust, aka you guys! Thanks!
Me personally: id learn to like tea and crumpets and move to london and get a sgs2.

Ok, providing leaving the country isn't an option...
as of right now i'm waiting for the SGS2 or the hercules to come out
OMG If I wUz U i WoUlD gEt OnE oF tHoSe SuPeR cOoL iPhOnE tHiNgS !!!!!
Seriously though if this is right I would try and hold off and go wherever it lands.
You can get a Smartphone with minimum minutes (450 anytime, unlimited otherwise) with unlimited texting and data through Verizon for $90 and you'll likely have the best coverage, or you can go with slightly less stellar coverage with T-Mobile or Sprint for about $80 for the same plan, though probably with more minutes. I'd avoid AT&T until they get their infrastructure problems under control.
ok if you can wait about a month for the samsung galaxy s 2 then get that if not the nexus s is an exceptional phone because its blazing fast like the galaxy s line but with the added benefits of having google's immediate upgrade and not waiting for OEMs to release them
lol @ iphone comment... Thanks for all of your input everyone! I think I'll try to hold off for the SGS2... I really wanted to get an HTC phone since I tried my best friends Thunderbolt... it worked really well, but I know they have the locked bootloaders and all... hopefully the GPS actually works in the SGS2 because I'll need it for traveling for work!
Wait for something with quadcore which should be out the end of the year or early next year. Don't reward Samsung's piss-poor behavior by buying an SGS2.
Just looking for some first hand experience, or tips from a T-Mobile employee. I was just told by TMo that if this Vibrant fails me (being my 3rd one), I'll be able to get a completely different phone.
I have every intention of calling them in the next couple of days to kindly let them know that the GPS isn't working as intended, of course. I just did a road trip to the Dallas/Ft. Worth area and my GPS failed me over and over (yes, I've done all of the fixes known to man) while my Garmin Nuvi worked flawlessly, as usual.
So, anyone know what my options will be? Since I paid $199.99 to extend my contract for this POS, I feel that I should be offered any of their smartphones at that price, but really have no idea as to how this works.
Thanks in advance!
You can get alot
As long as you are clear in your point and sound like you know what you are talking about you should be fine.
I went through this right when the sensation came out.
I got one for free and got to keep my vibe by signing a 2 year with customer loyalty. They sent me tbe sensation and it had touchscreen isues so back it went and I went through 2 alltoghether.
It wasnt a bad phone but I missed my im on it again now.
samsung
If you really like not having a heavy phone (sensation was like a weight haha) or the phone with a million issues the g2x.
I'd stick it out just 2 more months tops and we will have the htc ruby/amaze 4g and the tmobile galaxy s2 "hercules" both are rumored to be on tmos 42 mps network which os way more than double our current max of 14.4
Thanks for the response! That's a good point... I'll wait until some better phones are released here soon and then call to get my replacement. No point in doing it now since the selection isn't all that great.
Yea its funny how there are so many levels of "top teir" devices that out can be hard to keep track of. I can say I'll be way happier with a lighter phone with a more visible screen outdoors anf that they won't know my warranties gone because I used the same oems software of who made the phone. I think brand presence aside that the 42mps is worth the wait. i live in the mpls area and tmobile is very sttong here for signal so im excited for that chip.
In the meantime time try using the custom rom toxic crazy 8 with the clean and shiny theme. I put it on a guy I work withs vibrant and now he is wayyy happier with his phone that ever before. He even stopped talking about needing a new phone all the time hah
In the UK the SGSII is now £21.50 a month for 200 minutes, 500mb data and 3000 texts.
From what I can tell if I end up with the G model it has basically no development. Part of me choosing an Android phone to replace my iPhone 3GS is to play with new roms. Without them I might as well stick with the iPhone.
Has anyone in the UK dealt with making sure they don't get the G model?
Thank you for any help.
I work in a second hand store in the UK and I've never even seen the G version.
I don't think they sell it here?
Same to any phone
Will any phone be relevant. Im sure phones are going to follow the 'Getting larger' (Thats what she said) scheme now!
Like any phone you buy regardless of manufacturer, ROM development is something you have to research. IMHO, I think the SGS II will be dated in two years like a lot of other devices. ROM development can only take place when the manufacturer has released its Android source code. Samsung and HTC are good at that, but the i9000 (SGS) just recently sprouted a lot of ICS ROM's. Who knows when the SGS II 4G will get them. I'd be looking at the Nexus instead of the 4G.

agreed. nexus devicies in general have a far greater dev following, mostly in part because the source is available so soon. you best bet is a galaxy nexus, if u can afford it. I'm sure u can get a decent one second hand from kijiji or Craigslist
I'd imagine that getting one across the pond is not so easy. Value in the VAT and you'll see why these guys look for cheap deals when possible.
Well the Galaxy S2 can make phone calls so that would be a bonus. I'd say that would make it more relevant long term than a phone from a certain fruity vendor!

The existing roms wouldn't exactly disappear. But yeah, l'd go with the nexus if you want long-term rom development. Or wait for the sg3; it'd probably hold the devs' interest for two years or so.
sent from my Terran Command Center.
Only get a phone based on development if you plan on developing for that phone. Developers will come and go with each new device release
Thank you for the replies.
The main part was that the SGSII will only cost an extra £4 a month compared to what I'm paying now so it's basically getting an android phone for a negligible cost. Any new phone including the nexus will be about an extra £10-15 a month which is too much for me. I don't want to be a cheap skate but £100+ for the phone and then £36 a month for 2 years is way more than £21.50 a month for 2 years.
Really what I want is for it to still be able to get the newest Android versions. I know it's definitely getting/got ICS as well as there being roms for it but is it likely to get Jellybean even if it is through roms?

If you are looking at costs over two years I tend to find the best value option is to go SIM only. For £10 a month you should be able to get equal or perhaps more minutes than if you spend £21.50. That leaves you with £11.50 x 24 = £276 or £138 per year to play with. You could pick up an SG2 for that much. The best bit is that after 12 months you can sell it. As long as you haven't lost more £138 on the handset (which would mean flog it on ebay for £150+ next year) and you can buy a new SG3 (or whatever) on ebay.
Obviously because you aren't tied to a contract the 12 months can be six months or eighteen months if you prefer.

£20/month, on O2, 5000 texts, 500 mins, 500mb, from Tesco, and it's a normal GT-I9100, not a G version

Just had a look on the website and the cheapest is £25 +50 for the handset.
Emailed phones4u to check if it's the not g version and they said its not the g version. With the galaxy nexus set to get jellybean I would imagine the sgs2 will as well.
Is the new official ics update Asop or has it got touch wiz?
Ordered it earlier. It's going to be delivered in the next 48 hours.
Ok so I have been wanting to buy this phone since launch. My HD2 works fine with WP Rom but USB is faulty so cannot sync or charge. External charger for battery required.
Anyway, the price of sim free titan is now £285. I really want to buy this but worried about these issues:
1. WiFi cellular network allocation
2. Muffled voice during call
3. Antenna issue
4. If new and better phone launched at end of year.
what shall I do? Buy now or wait?
Thank you!
1. I had problems with wifi in the past, but since the last update it improved a lot in my opinion
2. The voice quality is not the best on this phone, but it isn't horrible either.
3. Never had any issues. When Im in college or at the cinema I have some signal loss, but so do m friends
4. There will always be a better phone
Hope you find this useful!

I am so jealous that your SIM free is just £285. I got it in November last year and paid £480!
I would say it's a steal at that price. There will be only one top-notch, well two, handsets till Oct this year - Titan 2 and Nokia Lumia 900. They won't be here till May-June.
Titan can be upgraded to Apollo. My plan is sell Titan in Oct and use that money to invest in a native Apollo handset instead of Titan2/Lumia900. I think you've got to get it and enjoy it. Then go for the next phone! There will be a better phone every 3 months. If you wait for it, you will never dive into the enjoyment
Nothing wrong with this handset at least not the UK ones. Get it from Carphone Warehouse if you can. The problems you are reading about are generally in the US handsets especially the AT&T ones.
Thanks mate for your reply
Yes the handset is now 299.99 plus 5% quidco bringing it to 285.00. I posted the deal here http://www.hotukdeals.com/deals/htc-titan-windows-phone-sim-free-285-after-quidco-expansys-1186159
Did you buy your handset sim free? I always do and dont do contracts. Am on simplicity deal for years. I bought my hd2 for £500 on launch day. Am tempted to buy Titan now.
Also are you positive Titan 2 will launch in UK? Where did you hear that? I thought it was for AT&T only.
PS ignore the rant i had with one guy in the HUKD thread

Haha, I think Titan is good for UK as Titan 2 comes with LTE in the USA. However, the rumour has it that it will follow the Nokia Lumia 900 (which comes here in May). But instead of LTE version UK will get the 3.5G version - which still I don't think any other network but O2 will benefit from here in the UK. So both the new phones are pretty pointless for the UK. Plus Titan 2 comes with a plastic back to make up the heavy weight of the 16 MP camera. I got Titan only because it felt sturdy. I am sure Titan 2 with plastic won't be the same thing to hold! I already have issues with 3G in the UK, I don't think 3.5G (Dont know the technical word they used) will help my battery or usage!
Yes always best sim free, The UK handsets seem to be more stable than the AT&T, Bought mine second hand and it had to go for repair at HTC but probably because the previous owner dropped it lol, Not suffered from any Voice problems or any Wi Fi issues and to be honest at that price you can't really go wrong, Antenna is all down to good contacts on the rear casing and never had any problems, As mentioned by Drupad you will have the option of the Apollo Update later in the year which should be interesting.
Is it written anywhere that the Titan will be upgradeable to Apollo? Any link?
Also if new handsets or native Apollo handsets will be out at the end of the year, would it be worth it to buy Titan now if I am only going to get 6-8 months use out of it before a better phone comes out?
What I DO know is I want a 4.7" screen and i guess there is no promise that the new handsets will be around 4.7" screen wise.
My final question is the HD7's 16gb sd card could be exchanged for a 32gb card with careful surgery Can this be done to the Titan too?
My only problem with Titan is : there is no Custon Rom or Interop-Unlock Yet.
but in the future it will be out.
you wont regret it, jut buy it.
I am SO close to buying it. Can do it in 10 seconds. I bet I buy it and one week later leaks of better handsets get out.
I ended up buying it and love the phone although family angry with me saying I spent a lot of money on a brand new phone and my voice sounds muffled
Temptation got the better of you then lol, Good choice, Great phone, not had any problems with voice being muffled, Only suggestion is to move the mic nearer to ya mouth, Looks as though we may not be getting the full Apollo going by the latest posts on ere but we should definitely get Tango and hopefully some form of update which maybe a form of Apollo, Its all guessing at the moment, Enjoy your Titan as most of us are doing for now, There will always be a better newer handset on the Horizon.
I have been waiting for the Nexus 4 and didnt manage to nab one. having sold my Galaxy Nexus beforehand I have been left with just a dumb fone and its become unbearable. So I requested my PAC code from Vodafone (not with any intention of leaving but I knew it would trigger their retentions team to call me) and sure enough I got a call within an hour. I said I was looking for a top of the range Android phone on the cheapest 12 month contract possible.
The guy then offered my a free Galaxy S3 or HTC One X+ on a 12 month contract with 600 mins, unlimited texts and 1GB of data for £41 /month. As I get 20% tarriff discount through Vodafone's Employee Advantage scheme (for workers whose company uses vodafone as their corporate mobile supplier) this is just £32.80 per month for 12 months = £393.60 for the whole year, cheaper than I could buy the phone itself.
It should arrive today and am looking forward to it. When the Nexus 4 becomes available, I may sell this and buy that, it depends how I get on with it.
Good deal. Especially with the added discount...
