Where could i find this for the Eris? I dont wanna use rom manager for a temporarily solution. I wanna be able to fastboot the .img to the phone for a permanent solution
I wouldn't use either of those, especially Clockwork. It is known to brick the Eris. In fact, every story that I've read about someone bricking the Eris, it always involves Clockwork. You may want to look up Amon's Rom Recovery or something like that. That's what everyone else almost has done. But you really want to avoid Clockwork for the Eris.

Trust me I know all about that, ive been using Amon Ra for some time and ive been rooted for a few months, I just wanted to switch over to clockwork to try something new, ive used it before through rom manager and had no problems, but i wanted to be able to boot into it using Vol-Up and Power

I am just wondering why people use Clockwork. Every set of directions I have found to load custom roms involve Amon's. I am just curious as to why people would use Clockwork and if there is any advantage to it. Everything that I have found about people bricking their phones always involve someone using Clockwork so it doesn't seem to me that it would be a good idea to use it.
It's kinda "easier" but like you said all instructions pretty much use Amon's. Plus clockwork has caused tons of problems with Eris's so it really shouldn't be used. Anyway there's no real answer to this question, people just choose it.
I used it for a bit cause it was put on my phone when I flashed a 2.1 rom a few months ago. I wanst aware it was so dangerous. Flashed multiple roms with it, made nands, used it to upgrade SU... all was well for a few months, then while trying to flash a custom rom I started to realize it was causing my phone problems. I even flashed to an alt recovery (amons) using rom manager. That was the problem tho. I had amons but clockwork was still controlling everything and my phone (which had been running flawlessly for months) started to act up real bad. So I did alot of reading here on xda and learned clockwork can be mucho dangerous with the Eris. I went to the Eris Dev subforum and found a post on how to safely flash back to amons from clockwork. Did it, wiped the phone, put on a new froyo rom, and presto, no more issues. It may work fine for a little bit, even a few months, but silently in the background it screws with your Eris' brains lol. Glad I fixed that!
Sent from my nonsensikal froyo using XDA App
The bug in CWM that makes the phone boot to recovery when the USB charger is really annoying. So until Amon_RA makes a recovery for the Thunderbolt or CWM fixes their bugs, I'd like to remove it and reinstall the stock recovery.
So, with that said, if I'm not running a custom ROM (yet), do I need to use a custom recovery like CWM or Amon_RA just because I'm rooted? Or is that only necessary once you get into flashing ROMs?
Thanks!
I guess you wont be needing complete backups either incase you change something and cant go back in time. Unless you like flashing the ruu and rerooting everytime you made a booboo
personally i like backups and the fastboot fixes the charging thing anyhow
also i have to say im a bit confused at the number of folks that turn their phones off to charge

Lol. I agree tho, I like being in touch with everything at all times. Thats why I have a smartphone. So my phone always stays on.
I'm one of the unlucky individuals for whom the hardware volume keys to get into recovery don't work. This hasn't been a problem for me so far since it's so easy to root in other ways, and I'd really like to try out CM7.
The CM7 thread specifically says
Make SURE you can get into Download mode using only buttons (no other method, Download mode from just buttons is essential).

which base on the red/bold makes me think this is a serious issue... but looking through the installation instructions I can't figure out why. It looks to me like installing CM7 is exactly the same process as the one I've already used successfully to flash Onyx, then Bionix, and now Axura.
What is the reason for this loud disclaimer, does anyone know? Doesn't CM7 now come with Clockworkmod Recovery included so I should be able to use it to get into recovery mode again in the future?

if your phone breaks (because CM7 is unstable right now) how do you expect to go to another ROM? "adb reboot recovery" won't help you because restoring a nandroid of another ROM won't do *anything*. "adb reboot download" doesn't work so you'll never make it to download mode.
so if your phone suddenly stops working, you're screwed and we're trying to protect people who lack the foresight to think about potential problems. basically, you'll be setting yourself up to be stuck in a very bad position and there's just no reason for it.

Okay, so the reason is due to stability concerns with the ROM, then? That makes sense... but that risk would apply any time I flash my phone with anything, not just CM.
I guess I'll just go back to waiting until a "stable" CM ROM comes out. Thanks for the quick reply, I appreciate it.
I'm not an android noob...
But just curiously browsing this forum because my sister is getting an Eris as a semi-permanent replacement for her crapberry that she lost.
I can't stand to see her stuck on cupcake...and she's given me the go-ahead to get her up to speed.
I plan on putting CM7 on there for her...
But I have a few questions.
Rooting:
Should I just use this application?
https://market.android.com/details?...1bGwsMSwyLDEsIm5ldC5hbmRpcmMuZXJpc3Jvb3RlciJd
And then to get CWM...
Rom Manager?
I see that CWM is bricking phones...why is that and how common is it?
Are there alternatives I should use instead (RZrecovery or similar?)
And as far as returning to stock...
We use SBF's with Motorola.
What is the alternative here?
Do I have to rely on Nandroids?
Can I restore a stock nandroid from CM7?

Yes. Install the app. Run the app. It will tell you to restart the phone - so, that means shut down the phone. Start it back up again. That will have installed Amon_RA recovery, which will allow you to Nandroid backup, install a custom ROM, etc.
(So, after that restart, you can shut the phone down, hold VolUp while powering on to get to Amon_RA recovery. You sound experienced enough to know what to do from there.)
By the way, the Eris by now should have Eclair (2.1), not cupcake (1.5). There should have been three OTAs that brought cupcake up to 2.1.
And then to get CWM...
Rom Manager?

As you have seen, many people running Clockwork Recovery as the default recovery have bricked their Erises. ROM Manager comes with almost all of the CM7 ROMs, but you can install it. From within ROM Manager you can have it flash Clockwork, which puts an update.zip file on the SD Card. Go into Amon_RA Recovery, Flash a zip from SD card, choose update.zip, and it will start Clockwork, if you prefer using that. (I actually always do this, as I prefer the Nandroid backup and wipe functions in Clockwork over Amon_RA.) Running Clockwork in this way is safe, as Amon_RA remains as the default recovery.
And as far as returning to stock...

No SBF files for the Eris; however, user bftb0 created a ROM that you can flash that reinstalls stock Recovery and the stock 2.1 ROM. It's called Flashback_21v2, located here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=792026
The no radio version should be fine for this purpose.
Perfect.
And I even meant to ask if there was a way to boot into the custom recovery from a power-off state...which you already covered!
That's all I needed.
I appreciate the time you put into answering every question...most people tend to pick one and then the thread dies.
Thanks!
Edit:
Oh, and ya her phone hasn't arrived yet...
The HTC official website said Cupcake...wow that would have been out-of-date!
Ok, so I readily admit that I'm the jackass the n00b video was aimed at. I thought I understood what I was doing, and clearly didn't. Now I can't get my phone to do ****.
I was attempting to flash the new CM9 beta. First time I've attempted to flash anything.
was on 2.3.5.
rooted using the 2.3.5 root method.
SBF-ed to 2.3.4. (prob didn't need to root on 2.3.5 if I was going to sbf to 2.3.4, but I'm an idiot)
SBF went fine. then I messed up good.
at the end of Moon Shadow's SBF tutorial he said he recommends the full factory reset, so I did it.
so now...I have no phone service. looking at settings/about phone it doesn't know my phone # and I have no idea how to fix this. not sure what other problems will present themselves after that, but that's the big issue. I'm connected to my home network, so at least I have some data connectivity.
before starting...
I made a backup with Clockwork Recovery, but that backup seems to be gone.
I made a backup with Go Backup, and that seems to still be there, but it was a 2.3.5 backup...how can I get to that and will it fix my problem?
ideally right now I'd just like to go back to the Go Backup backup I made before starting any of this and then I can reconsider where to go next.
additionally, I thought about just going forward, but I cannot for the life of my figure out how to flash this CM9 ROM, despite having read the directions 15 times. I tried to use Clockwork to install it from SD, but when I try that I can't see the .zip, despite having copied it over.
Can anyone take pity on a n00blet, or point me to a thread with information on how to solve this (I searched and had trouble finding anything useful)?
Very appreciative of all help.

ok, noob found thread about activation and fixed that part.
now I'm hoping I can just go back to 2.3.5 and apply my backup.
Lol, first take a deep breath. Your phone is not hosed, it's actually working like it's supposed too.
After you sbf, you phone is back to it's factory state right? So remember when you got your phone for the first time you had to have it activated/programmed. If you're on Verizon then dial *228 and follow the directions, takes about 5 minutes. This will give you back service and your phone number.
Second, the droid x2 is unique and requires a few different steps than most phones to flash things because it has whats called a locked, encrypted bootloader. So with the X2 you will NEVER want to use Rom Manager (Clockwork Mod Recovery) or Rom Toolbox. They just do not work with our phone yet.
Your going to want to read this link: http://www.droidxforums.com/forum/droid-x2-support/41785-common-x2-questions-answers.html
It gives a good overview of how the X2 works and explains a lot of things.
Then go here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1318083
This explains how to install and get into the X2's special Bootstrap Recovery. This is where you will make backups, restore backups, and flash new roms. The thread explains in great detail how to make and restore backups in Bootstrap Recovery.
oh man, thanks a bunch lead off.
that whole deal with the boot strap is something that I never saw in all the reading I did and probably solves a lot of my problems. I'll do what you said (starting with the deep breath) and begin again.
thanks again for the help.
Yea no problem
