i just flashed the Rogers 2.1 Firmware and what i find disappointing is i cant find the setting where i can set wither i want 2G or 3G connection, can anyone tell me how i can get this setting?
There is no setting for this on Rogers other than to turn off data altogether. So just go to Settings > Wireless & networks > Mobile networks and uncheck Data traffic and it will turn off 3G for you. Hope this helps!
Actually, unless Rogers blocked those settings, you can go to Settings: Wireless & Networks: Mobile Networks: Network Mode and choose GSM only.

Unfortunately, Rogers did block that. My X10a running 2.1 global generic has it while my recently (officially) upgraded X10a running Rogers doesn't.
There's a free widget called "2G-3G OnOff" by CurveFish that allows you to switch quickly between 2G and 3G.

For a more permanent solution, do the following:
Open the dialer.
Type *#*#4636#*#*
Select Phone Information then slide down. You'll see "Set preferred network type" and select GSM only, which is 2G.

I use the 2G-3G OnOff widget as well for this purpose. It works well even if all it does is take you to the screen to turn Data traffic on or off. Haven't tried the dialer option. Might give it a go.
Too bad there isn't a way for us to 'unlock' the Network mode menu. I would imagine that Rogers blocks it in an attempt to force users to use 3G/their data plans.

Thanks, i did however tried that widget but it just brings me to the network settings and couldnt find what i was looking for but ill try ur suggestion with the dialer

if you are on AT&T why would you bother with the rogers firmware? Today a co-worker of mine and I compared features between hers with the rogers 2.1 and my nordic.. other than I have more options and no rogers flash screen you could not tell the difference.. I was even able to edit my screen to show up as a x10a
they seem the same but as usual rogers does cut out some settings..

Well tbh Rogers work just fine, and since my AT&T Xperia X10 is an x10a and rogers 2.1 is an x10a firmware wouldnt that suit it better than x10i firmwares? and i heard some x10a owners had issues with the nordic update, like camera not working or battery drain issues,but are there any differences as far as performance and issues wise between x10a and x10i firmwares if you were to flash on an x10a phone?? Correct if u please because im coming straight from Windows Mobile

Sorry. I saw that afterwards. I'll keep looking as I'm also interested in a tweak like this.
Hopefully they get a generic X10a with all the features soon.

Install a generic X10a firmware and you'll be just like Rogers but with all the settings.
I use Brazil and everything is fast and works as advertised!

I have had no issues at all.. loud incall volume camera works 3g/2g/H, GPS all functions just fine. it's fast battery seems be just fine. The only thing was it came up as a x10i and I was able to edit it and it says its an x10a so other than that its just fine.

I got the same problem.
Finally I found that's the problem of "Quick Settings" (even my APN setting is correct).
Now I use "MySettings" instead of "Quick Settings".

Not sure if all carriers do this but I went on my carriers website (o2uk) and got them to resend my settings to my phone, once these were installed I can now send mms again. I think it was and issue with the auto settings applied at the 2.1 initial setup, even though I had selected the correct carrier from the available list!

Solution for fixed SMS error
try to do this solution if you can't send message after update to 2.1
in dial box type *#*#4636#*#*
move on the bottom you will see the SMSC box chose refresh and close it, SMS will work fine
If it can not fix your problem you should download APNDroid for free it's avalable on market and prety sure it work perfectly

Please post up your fix. I have the same exact problem. updated to 2.1, now cannot send/receive MMS. I also reset the APNs to default and deleted older settings. 1.6 did not have this problem. I guess 2.1 have some major bugs. even though it was a step up from 1.6.
UPDATE: After downloading and installing APNDroid via Android Market, it did fix my MMS problem. Thanks to whoever recommend it. However, at the same time, I also want to keep trying to learn how to fix it without using a third-party apps. Since I had no problem before with the 1.6, with just the APN settings alone. I don't think there should be one even with the 2.1 update. I hope either SE or Tmobile should provide a fix by having the settings available for download. If someone already found the appropiate fix via APN settings, without a Third-party app, please keep me posted. Thank you.

Check your operator site at the support section for MMS. T mobile gave a good guide to manually set your apn.

I don't get it...does this apk make the checking of the wifi tether disappear? As in disabling the status of att checking whether you have the plan or not.

Add the t-mobile hungary apn manually in settings/wireless &networks/mobile network/ access point.
then run the app and it will show up at the buttom.

I ended up adding "default,tether" to the APN type of my, manually entered, Rogers APN. This got the the tether working. Albeit it took a very long time for it to get the data network ready to use, but it worked. Perhaps the most disappointing thing is that the speed is ridiculously slow. On device, I get 3-6Mbps/380kbps, but via tethering the best I have been able to get is 500kbps/350kbps.
Anyone have any insight as to why the tethered speed is crushingly slow?

I was using the atrix hotspot in india on airtel carrier on rooted phone but now after update I have lost that function. Keep getting error msg to contact at&t to activate.

i was having the same problem of having to wait for a while for it to connect but just deleted the network on my laptop and then reconnect and it took 5 secs to get a connection.
im not sure about your speed problem, its def. not normal i get the same speed when using mobile hotspot on my laptop about 3-4Mbps/0.2Mbps.

In a word, yes. The validation check seems to be checking if the tether type is there. I combed through the sqlite scripts and scoured the forums, etc.
The speed issue seems to be resolved today; it might have been a network issue.
Installed root axx selected pelephone 3G and still needs AT&T ****..why?
Hello need some help if anybody has an idea about my problem.
I bot O1 from UK lock free with froyo 2.2.1 on it. I tried to update it with lg software crap and bricked the phone. Than after some research downloaded KDZ and a room with froyo 2.2.2 which i installed. Unfortunately the room had all T-mobile crap which does dot really affect the work of the phone. All works fine but can not send MMS. Any idea or just wait for gingerbread and update?

For me i have to put in "APN type: default,supl" to work with my mobile provider in Singapore.

Is your data enabled while you send the MMS?
I have internet which means that data transfer works in 3G. My provider is vodafone AL.
When I try to send mms it changes from 3g to H and than does not send as returns to 3G.
It looks that I will have to wait for gingerbread. I do not want to root.

It seems only your MMS setting is not properly configured.
Try installing Tweakker from the Market. Maybe it can help you.

Dunno, any decent operator should be able to send you the proper settings for MMS/Internet via a special SMS. You just open the SMS and are all set.
They tried by sms and i also went into one of their shops they did not understand why , just suggested a downgrade to 2.2.1 which i think with the GB near the corner was useless. Tweeaker did not work either.
However great phone for the price and love the battery life ( 2 straight days but using task killer and android booster)

Dev of the software only guarantee on CM6 and CM7 but I dont want to install this rom, due to lack of resources (webtop, fingerprint, etc).......

From what I understand based on the CM7 issue list, switching to 2g in the US is not working because of AT&T. You apparently have to call and enable it.
Here in Brazil it works...I can switch manually between GSM Only, Automatically or 3G Only.....but this app called Toggle 2G can do it automatically when we put in sleep mode....it's better because save much battery.....

On my stock AT&T which I'm using here in Oz,
Settings->Wireless & Networks->Mobile networks->Select network was disabled and wouldn't let me change it.

I saw this thread before and even got the options ungreyed, yet selecting 2g changes nothing here in us
Well, I have not used that app, but *#*#4636#*#* then phone info, and then preferred network should work.
Is what I always do in areas with poor 3G coverage. I switch to GSM. And vice verse, in areas with good 3G coverage I set it to WCDMA only.
Sorry, I didn't realise OP had already unlocked the 'Select network' menu and it works.
I didn't find an app that would toggle 2g/3g automatically on a stock ROM. I just installed the 2G-3G OnOff widget that's a shortcut to the 'Select network menu, and I manually toggle it when in bad signal area.
I couldn't install it on my german Atrix with french stock rom. After installing the Toggle2G-Update.zip with CWM the app simply doesn't appear in the drawer.
Those of you who were successful, what did you do?

Hi, I have a xperia mini pro(sk17a) and my problem is that the 3G don't work in my cell phone, I was reading ont the internet and maybe my cell phone doesn't support 850Mz band(I am from Peru and 3G works in 850mz).
Is there any solution? or maybe there is any way(software) that my cell phone can work with 850MZ
Settings - wireless and networks - mobile networks and check if there is 3G chosen. If yes and phone doesn't use it, then maybe no 3g in your area.

Which phone do you have, Sk17i or Sk17a? Both are Xperia Mini Pro, but have different 3G bands. You can check it in Settings - About phone and there is model number.
the problem is that when I activate the enable data in my cell phone(to use the mobile network to connect to internet) I only see the letter "E" that means 2G(Edge) and never appear "3G" or "H"(HSPA), and I Know that the problem is in my cell phone , because I have other cell phone that can connect to 3G without any problem but my xperia mini pro "SK17a" cannot.
for this reason I think that the problem is my cell phone don't support 850 band
I know some samsung galaxy phone have the same probleme ,don't support 850 band , and they can change their modems to make the the cell phone could support 850 band. but I don't find a modem for the sk17a with android 2.3.4.

Sk17a supports 3G 850 MHz band, so it has to be another problem.
Settings-Wireless and Networks-Mobile Networks - Mobile operators
Can it find your operator's 3G network? If yes, try to manually register it, just click on it. If not, then your phone cannot find it. My LWW doesn't always connect to 3G, if it isnt strong enough.
I have same problem(sk17a). My other device working 3G.

Flashing sk17i baseband might solve your problem
You might need to fix your APN settings, which are located at Settings- More- Mobile networks- Access Point Names. Google your carrier and APN (for example, "ATT APN"). I came up with a couple of different configurations which I saved in separate APN names and played with them until I figured out what worked best for me. Hope that helps you out.
