[Q] New phone for the missus - XPERIA X10 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello all,
I have an x10i and im quite happy with it but am unsure wether to get an x10 mini for my missus any advice would be much appreciated.
it would be on an 24mth contract with 3 in UK.

Excuse the blasphemy....
I'm looking at getting a HTC wildfire for my Daughter... also on 3 in the UK..
Depends how "tech" your missus is... if she just wants a phone that runs well and does it's thing without too much intervention.. then you might be better off going for a HTC Wildfire or Legend - they're a lot cheaper on contract than x10.. and fit a ladies hand better too (!!).
and the 2.2 upgrade has just started being rolled out to the Legends in the last couple of days..

I hate to say it, but get her an iPhone...
In my experience, the added awesomeness of Android leaves the majority of the fairer sex with little idea what to do with it. (see note 1)
The lack of customisability of the iPhone seems more suitable in these cases...
Now aside from that, there are heaps of advantages over having two phones on the same platform (and/or by the same manufacturer) e.g. shared peripherals, increased communication options between the two phones, etc.
Now assuming the wife is a little more tech savvy than most, then get her the x10 mini - keeping her on the same platform is a good thing...
Now, with the daughter, still get her an iPhone - all her mates will have an iPhone, all kids do these days.
Note 1 - I'm not saying all the fairer sex have no idea what to do with the added awesomeness of Android - there are both men and women alike who are in the either category - this is just in my experience. The real question is whether Android is going to make things better or worse for this person...

To be fair, he said the X10 mini, which would work perfectly well as a phone for a nontechnical woman, and fits far better in the hand than any HTC.

mini just looks cute but is matter of tastes, I wouldn't buy any other SE

Are you sure? The mini won awards for the best phone released in 2010 or something like that, and is one of the best reviewed smartphones out there. If you're basing your opinion on only the X10i/a, they're not comparable products, not in the same target audience.

My daughter and many of her mates now use android. They seem to be switching as they get older lol maybe they need to use a grown up os.

None of my daughters friends have iphones (yet!) they're only 11.. and apart from anything the iphone (on contract) is ridiculously expensive.. hence the suggestion for wildfire .. my daughter likes to take pictures and the mini pro doesn't have a great camera.

if she use the phone for the camera htc wildfire hill be a BIG disappointment, i had wildfire for a weak so i know... the display is horrible ... very pour detail, camera pics on pc not a big diferece =blurry
a lot of nonAndroid phones have a better camera Lg arena for example..

My suggestion better to get X10 Mini Pro instead of X10 Mini.
I bought one for my GF, which is not tech savvy.
I give her to play with my X10, then i found its hard for non tech savvy to typing in punctuation and numbers with android touchscreen keyboard.

My x10 got smashed and my wife is letting me use her x10pro small but nice keypad Ill be glad to get my x10 back but this is a great wee phone. So yes get your wife x10pro and your daughter iphone.

couldn't agree more, X10 mini pro is far better than the X10 mini, for a small screen it will be harder to type and sometimes annoying, but with X10 mini pro she'll enjoy texting/facebook/twitter more

I had an X10 but bought a Desire...not because I was fed up with X10 it's just how things played out. Anyway they're both great phones but i'd probably say choose desire because it's more up to date...also more widgets come with it and I just prefer the interface but your wife should really be happy with either. What I pointed out is just opinion based after all....maybe let her play around with both and see which she likes the look of better...

You should be extremely proud to have raised a child capable of free thought and not one of the typical sheep like youth of today.
And I say that with absolute sincerity

the camera on the X10 mini and Mini pro are in general better taking pictures than the X10, they get less blurry than the X10 and are way more fast.
I had by myself the x10, the mini and the mini pro, and I had both the mini and mini pro for taking pictures and recording videos, the video FPS seems higher than the X10 on both minis.
So go and get a Mini pro, because texting in mini is quite a hard task

X10 Mini is meant for people with very small finger.. hahaha
My company secretary also have X10 Mini, then i month later i show her my GF X10 Mini Pro before i gave to her.
I can still remember how she swears and cursing, hahaha..

[Q] I need some advice to choose between X10 mini pro and Milestone

Hello! I used to use iPhone3gs and loved it. Now I moved to another country (South Korea) and I am getting a new phone. My use of iphone3gs was quite limited:
1. Wikipedia offline
2. Google map (I often get lost.)
3. Dictionaries (I need good dictionaries of Japanese, English, French, Spanish and Korean)
4. Sync with Google mail, contacts, and calendar
5. Music (I listen 4~6 hours a day including podcasts and video watching), Podcast, and some videos (iTunes U was fantastic)
Now, I have two choices: X10 mini pro or Motorola Milestone. They cost the same, but Milestone comes with 16GB micro SD and a bluetooth headset.
But I love small and light form factor of X10 mini pro, and with smaller screen (resolution), I think X10 mini pro will run much snappier. I have not seen or used either mother, though.
I learned xda-developers site from my brother, and it's lovely and impressive! Maybe you cannot choose which to buy but I am sure you could give me some advice if X10 mini pro will do the job for my main usage!
Hi,
In terms of perfomance both phones are equally well but since u come from iphone so milestone would be better suited to u since it has a better screen than mini pro, moreover lots of devs have already customized the milestone, while for us it might just be the beginning of fully loaded roms....besides why dont u consider DesireZ or xperia pro as an option since they are new and somewhat more powerful and at this moment, milestone or mini pro are both getting outdated as I myself am gonna switch to sgs 2 or optimus 3d
All the best for ur new phone
Sent from my X10minipro using XDA Premium App
Sorry for incomplete post,
1) If u use wikipedia apps then for reading, mini pro screen is not too well suited although not too terrible but its just ok. And reading pdf files might be a problm.
2) If u use maps too much then take another phone, mini pro is good for socializing but its battery drains a lot quicker when using data....
3,4,5 ) All these factors are easily met by mini pro.
If u have a well cashed wallet, then choose a better phone as android industry is evolving quickly and mini pro might suffer so its not the best bet to get a mini pro(not future-proof atleast)...but if u have are short on cash then blindly pick up a mini pro as it is every mans phone..
Sent from my X10minipro using XDA Premium App
Thank you! I thought X10 mini pro might be a better choice because it probably be much faster due to its smaller resolution but after I considered your advice, I think Milestone may be the better choice for my use.
The reason why I don't go for the latest phone is because older phones like Milestone and X10 mini pro offer much better contract that they are practically free and they let you choose any kind of plan. I just can't be chained! That's why
But is there contract system in south korea???? Gosh I didnt know that,ur quite lucky I would presume
All the best then
Sent from my X10minipro using XDA Premium App
Yeah, people usually buy latest smartphones with 24 months contract. If you want a real good one, flagship models, they may force you to use an expensive data + call contract for several months. Of course, if you cancel the contract before 24 months, you should pay quite a fortune.
This may sound normal to some people, but I really don't want this kind of contract. 2 years with a same phone seems a prison to me. lol That was why I had to chose between Milestone and X10 mini pro since they offer a contract with only 12 months and you can chose any type of plan. These phones are also free, so if you cancel it before 12 months you just have to pay a commission, not the price of the phone. The problem is this kind of information is always internet only. Normal? people go to a shop to buy a smartphone and they pay a lot more! (and be happy anyway)
iPhone changed the ecosystem of mobile communication and this is the first time I try android. I am pretty sure I will be satisfied with xda-developers forum!! I hope that explanation of Korean cell phone contract system amused you a bit.
I ordered Milestone and am waiting now!! (It's Sunday night here)
Its quite amusing btw there are a lot of quality roms for milestone with iphone killing features.......hope u'll get an experience....enjoy ur new toy. ;-)

[Q] Was it a wrong decision for me to choose the X10i over an Iphone?

Topic..
Need your opinion
Over the past month with my X10i... Ive been thinking at what my uncle said when he bought me this X10i. He Asked me if I really wanted an X10, over an Iphone 4... I said yes... my only reason was because I dont want to be another person who owns an IPhone and treats it as a status symbol. So I gladly chose the X10.. But now.... It feels as if... its not the right decision ive made.. I thought the X10 could be beastly... or atleast in performance... ANdroid is awesome I admit.. but since the X10's limited capabilities as of now.... it feels like its inferior to that of IOS...
My uncle came by at my place and ask, Hows my X10 doing? He said at anytime we could take it back, get an Iphone and grab lunch.
So...? What do you guys think.....? Should I trade it in?
THanks for reading..
I'd go for a galaxy s

You could try the cooked ROMs we have in the forums, they really make X10 hardware shine, stock software is really lacking in the performance department, even the soft keyboard that comes with the phone cannot follow you if you are a fast typer. Give custom roms a try and you'll be amazed. X10 is really held back by the stock soft.
But, If I were you, I would have picked up one of the newest Xperia phones. Arc or Play. They're sexier in style and more powerful than both Iphone 4 and X10.

i'm similar to thinking like the OP, even the 3GS is faster... but i've faith that the rom developers will transform the x10 soon
I forgot to mention that I AM using ROMS. Im currently on WB's CM6. Even im starting to lose faith in what my X10i can actually be capable of.... I was even surprised that the X10 wasnt even Multi Touch!! Now it has but its not really a good thing...
Thanks for the replies anyway...
i really hope that my X10i can be more powerful
You should go for the iPhone, it's smoother, better battery life and much more great apps. But you will really miss the backbutton and the great launchers...
If you are on a custom ROM and still feel the performance doesn't meet your needs, you might give the Iphone 4 a try. I really like IOS, I myself have a very neat Ipod Touch 2G, but I really got used to things like Widgets, themes, Notification Bar, on screen power control (handy to turn on wifi, 3G/2G, toggle brightness...) and so on and so forth, that I really feel naked when using IOS.
It's really up to you, if you wait until Gingerbread ROMs, which seems to unleash hardware potential, are mature enough to be considered everyday use ROMs, your time for changing your mind to do the switch might have ended.
In about 2-3 months it will get official Gingerbread, with the newest kernel and... anyway, iphone it's for douchebags. I had the same problem with it... it's not a manly phone, it's a *****y phone, for Paris Hilton generation.
Yes, Xperia X10 it's slower than some other phones. But the look and feel... if you're a man, this is your phone. Before I got it, I was a little bit nervous about all the bad things told about it. But the overall impression is good, in the end. And it's a phone that you don't see in every kids hand, just because it's cool.
Lol personally I also made the same decision and I don't regret it I love my phone lol with CM 6.1.3 its pretty awesome
root ur phone nd try the TRIPNMIUI rom.. it will make the best out of ur x10
I like it but i seriously thought that it would be better, of course i got x10 also becoz my whole family and almost everyone has iphone, i wanted something more unique.

Iphone 4, yeah i used one(my officemate have it), it have good multi touch, x10 can only go to dual touch, but iphone 4 can have up to 4 finger. but in terms of usability, my x10 can do more than his iphone. Its like im mocking him with alternative apps which he has to pays for his iphone, like when he bought angry bird, I have it for free, when he bought need for speed, i have it for free again and so on.
The one thing that I don't like about the Iphone, is that when everybody thinks that its the one of the greatest phone evar.. when in reality it lacks feature that was already on the phone 5 years ago.
This is the quote that I got on my mind.
"I don't want to be popular because of my phone, I want my phone to be just a phone that I could use everyday."(something is not right, but just like to share.. hahahaha)..
I'll stick to the point the point here and tell you that X10 was a good decision
Cheers!
I tried to go to the iphone 4, at first I felt like a douche for doing so, then I REALLY didn't like the limited capability like previously mentioned(widgets and what not and so fourth) then I felt restricted AND like a douche. but I find us higher thinkers need android type phones...iphones are dumb :-D hahaha. plus, if you pull off the factory screen protector, it looks and feels FABULOUS!

An x10 can only be traded in exchange of an Arc
i was thinking like you before i met the WolfBreaks ROM, now i never give away my x10 for any apple product. But if you're not sure about performance after custom rom you should try ios
I got the X10i because it's an Android device and that it was the best damn looking one at that time [It still is, IMO, but now second to Arc].
It being a Sony Ericsson device is just coincidence for me. If the Samsung Galaxy S looked *anywhere* near as good as the X10, then I'd had bought it.
Thanks for teh.replies guys... I feel really confident with my X10 now.... Maybe I was just looking at all of its bad sides. Not the good ones. :3 anyway.... I wont be letting go of this *smarter*phone anytime soon...
Sent from my X10i using XDA App
It's not the same approach , X10 is for people who like to get it crashed and tweak it with strange update.zip downloaded on russian website
In my opinion, the x10i is a great phone, is not the best, only a great phone. I have an iPad, two iPods and one iMac and I have an x10i. Today I love it (thanks to all xda developers). It´s perfect to use like a phone, like a camera, like a gaming machine (if you´re waiting anywhere).
I used the ios software and it´s good, but it´s limited.

[Q] - what made you buy an X10

Well... just in a way out of curiosity - what made you think "This is what is missing in my life" of the X10?
For me it was a friend who showed it to me and I tried it - and almost immediately fell in love with it.
Actually this is the second best phone I have owned. The best is the Nokia 3210 - that phone could withstand some serious beatings and "falling-out-of-the-pocket-onto-the-asphalt"!
1. I'm 17
2. Need an upgrade from the LG Vu
3. The chick who sold it was hot
4. Phone looked sexy and was a MAJOR upgrade to a smartphone
I got conned into buying it by the rogers sales man, personally I would have liked to do some more research before buying the phone
I never had a smartphone before my X10. In the past I had feature phones from Nokia, Motorola, and then I had a Sony Ericsson Z525 which I liked.
When the Sony Ericsson X1 first came out, I was impressed. I wanted it, but it was not offered in the United States though one of the major wireless carriers here, so I just kept on using my Z525. When the X2 came along, I thought it was unimpressive so I didn't think about that one much.
I saw videos of the X10 around the time of its release and was impressed by the custom UI so that started up my interest in the XPERIA X-series again. Then as Android became more and more popular, I kept hoping that it would make it to the U.S.. When it finally did, I picked one up for $50.00 (U.S.D.) and have been happy with it.
It's a nice evolutionary kind of product for me. I used to use a PlayStation Portable for mobile gaming, listening to music, and videos. And I used a Sony NAV-U for navigation. Now my X10 is my main portable music player, it's great for watching videos, I have some casual games installed on it, the camera is okay when I'm without my usual digital point-and-shoots, and the free Google Maps/Navigation can't be beat. It's also great to have around for general Web stuff.
The only bummer about the phone is being tied to AT&T:
Who will never offer firmware upgrades to their Android 1.6 X10 customers
Who has no inexpensive unlimited data plan
I'm using the SE generic global 2.1 firmware right now which suits me fine, and I'm patiently waiting for the 2.3 upgrade. The phone may no longer be a high-end device, but it's still sleek looking, has good build quality, performs decently, and does what I need it to do.
1. Loved the design
2. I've been an Ericsson/Sony Ericsson Fanboy since the 90s.
3. I originally wanted a desire but that wasn't available on my network carrier.
4. I've wanted a smart phone. Could never afford UIQ phones (nearly bought an M600 once), never liked S60, WM or ios so Android on SE was a god send.
free and the camera
Its design, white color, and the "Sony" word..
1. Camera
2. Cheaper then the desire and sgs on craigslist when I bought it
Truth be told as soon as I'm eligible for a upgrade through rogers I'm selling my x10
Sent from my X10a using XDA App
Sony always works great for me. Since I bought my first Z500 almost 10 years ago.
i had a crappy galaxy i7500, needed a new high end smartphone, xperia x10 was a good choice, under circumstances had to get it used, it was the cheapest used high end smartphone i could get, at $200 for a pretty good condition, i'm pretty happy by my purchase

My first smartphone, and I knowingly bought it when I knew it was at its end of the life cycle because it was relatively cheap (350 bucks without plan) and was fast and sexy, and I saw the support XDA had for this smartphone.
It was love at first sight.
I would have gone for the captivate for ATT but it was too expensive at the time. So i got the X10 instead. I am glad i did it in the long run cuz of the upcoming release of gingerbread and the camera. I personally love my X10.

It never came to me that I need to buy anything larger than Sonyericsson T303, and never came to my mind to buy an x10 mini, but when I was looking for a new phone, I see a couple of good review about the x10 mini, so I bought one. after a month or two I find it hard to surf the web because of its size, and my Post paid plan contract is ending soon, so I aquire the plan with x8, which is like mini, only larger. I get used to it.
So I was thinking, X10 mini have decent camera, but small in size, X8 have larger display but lousy camera, so I trade it for X10. I was thinking of HTC Desire HD, but finding it too big. I was also eyeing for defy but x10 screen is larger.
So there, X10's journey to my life is not that easy nor complicated. I think this is what we call destiny.. hahahaha...
June last year i wanted one of 2 phones, desire or x10.
Was my first android phone so no research was done.... doh
I ended up getting x10 cus the desire looked so wide like a brick.
Now i wish i didnt upgrade on my exact due date, i should of waited till more phones were released.
However i still love my x10 but only thanks to xda community!

My thoughts on the minis

I have been using the mini pro now for almost a year. Last week while browsing the net for a cheap contract deal for a relative, I found a very cheap deal for a refurbished x10 which I got. Been using it now With the official SE 2.1 firmware for a few days. All in all, I am quite happy with it. The fact it will get gingerbread soon makes it even better. My experience with it shows me that you can't really have a good smartphone experience (let alone a good android experience) with the minis. The screen size really lets down what could have been a true if somewhat humble champion. I believe a 3 inch screen should be the very minimum for a smartphone that's meant for web browsing, emailing, and running apps. SE made a mistake (one of many in what was a very poorly judged 2010) which they have rectified with the new mini range.
Don't get me wrong, I am sure there are a lot of folks out there who get a lot of joy from their minis. For me personally having used the x10 for a while, the minis just don't give a very good smartphone experience.
Share your thoughts.

Zodiac, i couldn't agree more! I love my mini (not even pro), but the screen is really to small for sucha good and complete device.
My partner has an SE Arc and from the first time i touched it i was jealous, not only for the specs and speed (my lill mini on miniCM6 keeps up in performance amazingly well....lol...), but the screen looks and works so freaking awesome. I decided instantly i 'need' one too!
On the other hand, since the mini was my first android device, parting from it will be a bit hard, how weird can one be huhh......
Well, you are right about the tiny screen. It is like looking at the internet through a keyhole. My experience is that internet browsing becomes enjoyable at 4 inches and above. My previous phone was an HTC HD2 which in the last few months I used with a Gingerbread nand rom and fell in love with android. And the HD2 was quite a good piece of hardware. But...I dont regret changing for the mini pro. I find that the mini pro's camera is better and also sound quality is better than that of the HD2. I also love the hardware keyboard which I use heavily. Currently Im using the mini pro with the stock SE rom - rooted and with xrec and removed bloatware. Cant really make up my mind about going to a custom rom because I am afraid of loosing camera quality.
All in all the mini pro is a lovely thing. The only thing that really gets on my nerves is the poor battery life.
Soon will be released Xperia Mini with 3" display, and other upgrades. I had my last phone (W810) for 4.5 years. Now the X10 mini will last probably a few more months.
The minis would have been perfect (if such a thing exists) with a 3 inch screen and at the very least HVGA and not QVGA which limits the apps you can download. I mean how stupid is that.

Believe it or not, the mini sound quality is way better then from SE Arc too (when not connected to headphone i mean), but i can't beat the Arc camera though
hi its my first android handset from 2003 , i'm sony ericsson pocessor, in two months back i had vivaz U5i but i loved my X10 mini now with its functionality it's a good phone for me only SE wont upgrade to gingerbread (android 2.3) and i love stock menu's and functionality.
the dialer , the home screen , its icons , i search for anyone has ported any thing from stock rom to MINI CM6 or 7
I had been a Windows Mobile user for the last 5 or so years, but I wanted a change to the "future", to an Android phone, but I didn't want to go all out on a phone I could end up not liking, so last October I went with an x10 Mini Pro, not only is it a cheap device, but it packs quite a punch for it's size, there's pretty much almost nothing I couldn't do on this little one besides flash sites (skyfire with vid plugin solved it), and play a couple of games, (PvZ for eg, all others seem fine, even fps games).
All I can say is that this device gave me such a good impression and introduction to the Android platform that I'm waiting for a SGSII to arrive this week, as this shortie did it's job, for 139€, no contract, I can't really complain of any of the features, and while the screen might be small, well, it's a Mini version so I expected the short screen.

[Q] Are you going to upgrade to the ARC?

In a few months it's gonna be time for me to upgrade my phone. I was so sick of the xperia x10 w/ all of sony's and AT&T's holdups. Is anyone else thinking of getting the ARC?
I like some of sony's UI features, like the camera. Google's stock camera is disgusting. But I havent used it because I have to run a custom 2.2 rom that it doesnt work with.

But Sensation battery life sucks afaik. I'd go for the SGS II as most of the people do at the moment. Only thing is, compared with the Arc, all the other phones (and especially the SGS II and HTC phones) look boring and generic
With GB and custom kernels, my X10 will hopefully stay with me until the next generation of phones is revealed Maybe I'd even go for a MeeGo device, if Android apps are finally supported. Its perfomance and multitasking are really impressive and it'd be a nice change to see something different from Android.
I'm gonna stick with x10 until a beautiful next generation phone comes out. Or I may buy xperia ray, looks great and smaller than arc with pretty much same specs and front camera for video/skype calling.
Sg2 is great, after I tried in shop, but man its ugly.
I may sound a bit old fashioned but I'm getting annoyed with these massive brick phones, smaller for me please

I have a x10 and I ugraded to the atrix dual core 4G. Which is awesome and really fast. The arc is to outdated in hardware specs. But I know the arc has a good camera and has gingerbread.
Sent from my Atrix 4G with XDA Premium App
For me the ARC is a definite no go. If your upgrading on a 2 year contract, then I would say loud and clear "stay as far away from the ARC as you can". In my opinion the arc has the same shelf life as the x10. However, if you have been happy in the main with the x10, then you can go for the beautiful design of the arc over the competency and performance of the other phones (SGS2, Optimus 3d and Sensation).
Personally, I now have a very different view of smartphones to that which I had last year. Then I had the view that they were just cleverer phones but now I know that they are more like mini computers. I wouldn't buy a single core computer for the same price as a dual cored machine because it looked prettier. The same, for me anyways, now applies to smartphones.

exactly...
buying an arc now or soon at the price it is would be cheating yourself in some way imo.
Sure it looks nice, but imagine in 6 months time how dated it will be.
Do yourself a favour and either wait till SE releases something current, or buy something current
no way to get one more SE phone. done with them, i'm heading for SGS2 or LG Optimus 3D in the 2nd half of the year.
SE burned their bridges with me on the x10.
I was always a big SE fan and had nothing but good things to say about them.
But the x10 ruined it for me, so i will have to swap brands for a company that cares about it customers.
If SE had made effort with the X10, i would have bought a newer SE phone but they dropped us in the water.
there is no change in hell i give another 400 Euros for 16m colors, bravia engine and unlocked bootloader, even if i was rich.
If i wanted to buy a new phone i d buy samsung galaxy s2.
NO, Arc is ugly, But might go xperia Neo or Active(underwater video shotting)
Nah it's like buying a Nexus One now, you might as well wait and get something that has a newer lifespan.
There is Q&A section for posting this.
Finally time to buy a new phone. My Xperia X10 has failed so bad. I'll never go with SE again. Which is sad.
