Hey guys,
So I'm on my second android phone, currently an unlocked htc g2 on at&t. I love android and I love htc. Inconveniently, I also love full qwerty keyboards, limiting my interest to certain phones. My g2 is great, minus the fact that I can't get on the att 3g network. While its not a huge deal being stuck on EDGE, it obviously limits my web browsing when I'm away from wifi and the att 3g hotspot in my house teases me. There is not an att android phone that interests me one bit, leaving me to unlock (previously used an unlocked mytouch 3g slide).
I'm wondering if there is any sort of solution to my problem.
At&t 3g compatible, qwerty keyboard android phone???
Thanks in advance for any suggestions

Motorola has 2 options that are newer phones on att per phonescoop that are droid 2.1 or higher with keyboards.

There is the HTC Desire Z. It is identical to the T-Mobile G2 only a different display technology, and HTC Sense UI.
Recently us version with AT&T 3G frequencies was released. If you are goign to get one, be careful that you are getting US version(850/1900) and not euro version(900/2100)
Negri Electronics sells the US HTC Desire Z

I'm in New Zealand and i use telecom XT network (umts 850mhz) so obviously the at&t version will work fine. I also perhaps have the opportunity of buying the umts quadband version (850,900,1900,2100) which would probably not have the same restrictions as the at&t 4G.
However, from lurking here i can see that there seems to be more dev happening on the 4G, is this correct or would i be better off with the vanilla quadband 3g version? (im not 100% sure where the local stores source these vanilla phones from)
One day i might change to another provider in which case i would need 900 umts but if there is more chance of getting more bang for my buck with the 4g i will go that way.
Yeah it would be easier just to buy a galaxy 2 but its big and cheap feeling and i just dont trust samsung build quality or gps as much as the Moto.
thanks in advance.
the 4G is a marketing term from AT&T. its just 14mb HSPDA+
Whether a local version vs AT&T version is worth it, that is up to you

Yep i understand that the 4g is just a marketing buzzword. What i'm asking is to me it looks like the vanilla phone appears to be identical hardware just with an extra 3g band? Also which model is likely to have the better dev support and moto support if they do decide to unlock the bootloader for certain ops?
Is the atrix 4g only sold on AT&T or are other operators also selling htis elsewhere in the world?
I'm just wanting to make sure i buy the model with the best support moving forward as it has to be a keeper for a while. I've flashed the absolute hell out of my milestone and sadly realise that due to the ram its never going to amount to much more.
I have an atrix that is unlocked and has a T-mobile sim card. But its stuck on Edge and never been on 4g let alone even 3g. Is there a custom rom and/or kernel that can fix this issue?
The atrix isn't 4G capable (lacks the hardware) and T-mobile uses a different frequency for their 3G networks that the Atrix doesn't support.
So yeah you're stuck on edge as long as you're using T-mobile on the atrix
Seriously?

I have been considering the Atrix 4G from AT&T. it is advertised as 4G by ATT. I ready a couple reviews that said it was slow, but I assumed that might be from all the bloatware. I guess I should be looking at a different phone, if the Atrix 4G is really not 4G.
First find the specs of the device. Only devices listed as LTE are real 4G. You can find it in radio frequencies. At&t only has a few but verizon has a plenty to choose, although according to user feedback 4g devices are battery hogs, while on 4g of course.

If you want fast / reliable data speeds you best be looking at a different carrier than AT&T.

Well that sucks... I guess I'll be continuing my search. I'm new here but am loving the available information and the responsiveness of the members. Thanks again.
As I can understand the xt910 in Europe doesn't have 4g but is this just hardware that's not being used. And will it be active with a update
I ask because the us version has 4g lte is it a totally different phone.

Even if they activated the latent LTE chip, its supported frequency would be useless in Europe.

Just wondering as ipad 4g is same world wide is it not

I think you'd need dual band for a phone to be able to use both. Correct me if i am wrong

Most certainly not. LTE is far from having worldwide standard bands, and it currently looks like the closest to a standard will be 1800mhz rather than the 700mhz Verizon uses.
Have a look for the wonderful marketing blunder Apple made by selling the iPad as a 4G device in Australia where the only LTE network is Telstra's on 1800mhz.
There's also issues like TD-LTE vs. the other standard I forget the name of right now.

2,5Ghz LTE will be used in Brazil because 700Mhz frequency is dedicated for TV broadcasting. Experts says 700Mhz is better because uses less antennas and are more compatible with actual devices, like vrz ones. Hope they change their minds in time. :/

Hello
I have a question that has been bothering me and I cant figure out the answer. As I am a noob I have not yet gained the knowledge to understand where most of these tutorials that i have found online are starting at. My question is "How do I port a CDMA rom to GSM".
I am trying to get the Droid Razr Eclipse rom which is a CDMA rom, to work on my GSM phone. I also would like to be able to make some small adjustments to the rom as well. Like for example. On the stock rom for the droid razr I have the ability to control my music from the lock screen however on this rom, the eclipse rom, I cant do that I must unlock the phone, and then change the song, which is a hassle if i i am driving or playing video games. I also would like to be able to change the look of the calender app that comes with this rom. because I feel that is a bit too bulky for my taste. Other than those three problems the rom is great.
I hope I am not offending the creator of this rom by asking how i can change things in it please forgive me. However thats all I would like to change other than that the rom is great.
I would be greatly appreciated if I can receive an answer asap
Thank you,
The Noob ejay010

I want to buy a Droid Razr but I'm on TMo. I've been on TMo for ten years and do not want to change.
Thing is, the Razr does not have 1700 MHz, so I will never get 3G on TMo. I understand there is a new thing called "voice over LTE". MetroPCS is supposed to have it, and they're about to merge with TMo.
Maybe this is a way I could get voice, data, and SMS with the Droid Razr on TMo or MetroPCS? If this would be possible, which Razr should I buy? Will the 4.3" screen be possible? This seems like the best balance of screen size to me. And I'll want to run MIUI.
Metro pcs and tmobile are doing a reverse merger were metropcs buys tmobile but tmobile will control the company but dutch telecom will control all of it since they own tmobile

Actually it's TMobile that's doing the deal, and it's structured as a reverse merger.
And TMobile is owned by Deutsche (German) Telecom, not Dutch.
But this has nothing to do with my technical questions. Does anyone know my technical questions?

in 2015 the metro pcs network will be shut down. right their that answers your question. Go with tmobile. But legally metro is buying tmobile with tmobile money. you say ketchup i say catchup
Since no one here knows, I'll pass along what I've found out.
The Droid Razr (all versions, including M, Maxx, & HD) actually has two radios: CDMA and GSM. It's sold only for Verizon (CDMA), but with the ICS upgrade the GSM radio has been turned on. This makes it possible to use this phone worldwide, including in the US.
So this phone can be used with AT&T and TMobile. However it does not have 1700MHz so can not do 3G with TMo, only with AT&T. Newer models do have LTE at 700MHz (Verizon only).
TMo has recently lost 700,000 subscribers because it can not accommodate the iPhone, and so it is now scrambling to put together a system that can either get 3G on standard frequencies, or LTE. Verizon owns 700MHz, so I don't know how they are going to do this.
I've been looking around for some good deals on a off contract HTC One. I'm currently on AT&T but I've noticed T-Mobile and Sprint HTC One's seem to be selling cheaper. I've read that all HTC One's have the same hardware including radios, but what about the LTE bands? Is there any difference between the carriers? And would I first have to unlock another carriers branded phone in order to get it to work on AT&T?

I'm pretty sure the T-Mobile One will work with AT&T's LTE network. Not sure if you need to unlock the AT&T or T-Mobile Ones to use on each other's networks. You can't use Sprint on anything but Sprint's network. Sprint uses CDMA and AT&T and T-Mobile are GSM networks.
You should get a T-Mobile version of the One, that is the best version to get. It will support both AT&T and T-Mobile LTE bands, plus regular AWS 4G on T-Mobile. You will need to have it SIM unlocked to use it with AT&T, eBay is where you can do it.
From where I am, socal, on CL everywhere, the AT&T version is always cheaper. T-Mobile version is harder to find and usually costs more.

Thanks for the answers. Good to know a T-Mobile phone will work should I purchase one.

Curious as well, can someone give solid proof of all bands? I wouldn't want to just fall back on word of mouth when purchasing a phone based on this info.
Thanks!
