Flashing a new kernel - Vibrant Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I ve never flashed just a kernel before done other things but not just the kernel. I am assuming the process is the same as a rom
Load the new kernel in the int sd card
Boot to recovery from clockworkmod
Clear cache etc.....
The reinstall the kernel by picking that under reinstall packages
and it should do the rest ?

Pick install zip then choose the zip, let it do it's thing (usually only a few seconds) and reboot. If you pick reinstall packages all that does is install clockwork again.

thanks
Thanks, got it

In rom manager you have to check delete cache, then install latest version of CWM.

I guess the way to Flash a ROM is to place a Custome ROM in the SD Card and Use ROM Manager to Reboot into Recovery and Flash with Clockwork Recovery?
Or Can I select Install ROM from SD Card option in ROM Manager.....?

you can do either. I prefer to just boot into recovery, so I can wipe data/factory twice, and wipe cache, and delvik cache twice. then flash a new rom.
the second way you mentioned is more automated, but I don't feel is a thorough.
I tried all the steps but sometimes it just takes a simple reboot.

[Q] 2.3.5 with KI3 . Unable to install CM7

Hi,
Currently using latest firmware KI3 with root.
I'm able to use CWM, backup, install zips, everything.
However, if i install a ROM trough a ZIP, i get a boot loop.
Only way to get back the phone, it's to install via ODIN with latest KI3.
Even tried with Litening Rom, and got the boot loop.
Any ideas ?
I was very keen to return to CM7.
Tx in advance.
Did you exactly what's mentioned here?
Install via ClockworkMod (do not use ROMManager for initial install):
Make sure you're running a rooted device.
Root your device and install ClockworkMod Recovery (http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1118693)
Do a Nandroid backup!
WIPE (wipe data/factory reset + wipe cache partition) - do it for real.
Install the ROM from internal sdcard using ClockworkMod Recovery.
Do not reboot! We mean it - do nothing except choose zip and continue next step (if you come back to us with permission issues in install, we will know you did not read the directions and will call you an idiot). If it just plain hangs, reboot directly back into ClockworkMod recovery and continue at the next step.
Install the ROM from internal sdcard using ClockworkMod Recovery, again (due to a bug in the install).
Reboot
Install the Google Addon through ROMManager which is easiest, but you can
download the gapps.zip and install via ClockworkMod recovery instead.

Did you try flashing a old stock ROM like KH3, root it then try from this base?
I went from Villain ROM 2.3.5 to CyanogenMOD without any problems.
It's essential that you flash CyanogenMOD !TWICE! in a row when you're coming from a stock ROM.
Thanks.
Gonna check, as soon as i'm @ 127.0.0.1
Same behaviour, back to boot loop.
Tanx anyway!
I had a similar problem so here goes my help.
Cf root kernel uses a modified version of CWM that isn't compatible with CM7 or something like that. So what I did was flash this kernel http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1118693. Get the kernel with CWM 5.x.y.z With that I got a compatible version of CWM and from there I flashed CM7. It is important that you do a full wipe, wipe cache, wipe dalvik cache, format \system, everything so you don't get any trouble. THen you flash the CM7 zip file, when tha t is done, flash the zip again for a second time (don't reboot just do it after the first flash). After that reboot. That worked for me at least.
A tip: If you can't reboot your phone and you have no ROM zip file to flash via CWM you can mount usb storage from CWM for putting the ROM in sd card and flash with CWM. That way you don't have to use ODIN to recover.
Tanx Tomas.
Tried with CWM 5.x.y.z and upon "WIPE" always got an error for mounting partitions.
Could't mount CACHE, SDCARD .....
Tx anyway.
Back to ODIN, back to stock 2.3.5
PS : I have to get a JIG to reset ...

[Q] Installing zips from recovery menu

Can I install multiple zips from the recovery menu at the same time without rebooting or do I need to reboot after each installation?
I think it depends what you are installing, like rom updates need a reboot to take effect. I supose it would be best to just reboot after each one just incase, say you installed a few at a time and your tab got messed up, you wouldn't know which one had done it.
Hope this helps

you can install .zip files from recovery one after another. It is advisable to reboot on each .zip install. Also do backup before flashing the .zip file in recovery mode
new radios require an immediate reboot, but will go right back into recovery
otherwise they can be flashed one over another.
Some zips will overwrite existing data, so flash in a logical order
my process: radios (not for tabs yet), reboot, flash Rom, kernel, apps (if applicable), misc tweaks (boot animation, build.prop Tweaks, init.d scripts, etc) Reboot

[Q] Cyanogen Mod on Lg Phoenix

Can someone help me on getting 2.3 gingerbread with the cyanogen mod on my phone (LG Phoenix). I already have clockwork recovery and everything, i just need the files from someone, ones that work, most of them on the internet are invalid..
go to this thread.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1436952
scroll down till you see this rom.
A-SERIES .32 KERNEL, OLD BASEBAND Baseband v10E
download it and put it on root of sd card. ie not in any folders
you will need this kernel as you have a phoenix. p500 kernels wont work correctly.
http://forums.androidcentral.com/t-...-2-08-overclock-cm7-2-3-7-etc-gyro-fixed.html
scroll down and download the attachment. joban 2.08 kernel zip
put it on root of sd card
im not sure how you applied roms, but because rom manager isnt supported on our phones i wouldnt recommend useing it to flash roms.
boot into recovery. i power off phone then hold power, home, and vol-down at the same time, keep held down till it loads into recovery.
do factory reset/wipe
wipe cache(s)
wipe battery stats. this and wipe delvik cache is thru advance option. also you can turn off/on signature verification if your having issues. ie invalid or signature not found.
then choose apply zip from sd card
choose zip from sd card
find rom , choose it
it will ask you again to make sure you got the one you want.
after flash reboot phone.
once booted you will have funky colors, dont worry. turn off phone a boot into recovery.
flash kernel same way as rom. no need to wipe anything though.
reboot and enjoy.
a caution when using rom manager aside from flashing the recovery. other functions have resulted in soft bricks and weird resets.
LG Phoenix running CM7.2+joban 2.08 kernel
hit the thanks button if i helped.
i have to sign up for android central, nd the sign up doesnt work bcuz of the captcha, and if rom manager isnt supported is there another thing i can use
Rom manager is erelavent. Can you boot into recovery? If so then ill get you a link to the kernel.
ya i can boot into recovery, i have backups too

[Q] how to install rom

I have been trying to get to the screen where i can install from sd but it will not let me get to that point. I boot into recovery mode but the options it gives me is
reboot system now
reinstall packages
delete all user data
delete cache data
format internal sd-card
the letters are blue..................
can some help me out????? i want to install a different rom but i can't get to the install rom from sd option
Thanks
Download cwm rom manager from the manager, and install the recovery.
After that you can install the rom you desire!
i tried that and still same result. I have install other roms before but now it wont let me get to the install from sd screen
You should probably learn how to flash back to stock first (instructions are in many of the Guides). If you are flashing roms, eventually something will go wrong, and you will need to reflash to stock, or at least install a new kernel and recovery. Using Odin or Heimdall to install a kernel is part of the instructions for installing CM. Better to have Odin and the JFD file on hand when your phone bricks or boot-loops.

Select reinstall packsges....you may have to do it twice then you should be out of stock recovery and into clockwork recovery
Sent from My I Screamed Vibrant
You can download CWR from my signature and put it on your internal SD. Put the update.zip on the internal and make sure it is only thing labeled .zip on there. Hit Reinstall Packages, let it cycle then hit it again. Recovery will go from blue to green and then you can install ROM from SD.
+1 on the reading and how to install ROMs. Plus while you are in CWR, go to Backup/Restore and do a nandriod backup.
Good luck.
i have all that and have gone back to stock and everything. still same results

What these guys have told you has worked time and time again for most everyone else. What I would recommend is that you get the AIO toolbox. Everything you need in a one-stop-shop.
