All your personal data on /sdcard and external SD stays intact, unless you check re-partition.

Not unless you specify it to do so.

how do you do a full wipe without losing CWM or root?

I have been flashing ROMs for a while, but noticed that even a full factory data wipe/reset in recovery still leaves a ton of crap left over from the previous program installations? I know there are settings in mounts and storage but I have only used format system before.
I want to really clean my phones internal memory without losing CWM or root.
Can someone please help?
I ran a few searches but could not find anything this specific?
Thanks.
Format sdcard, shouldn't lose root or recovery but will lose all data on phone

Thanks. So from recovery, mounts and storage? Format SD?
Below is a copy/paste from one of the guides in my signature:
IF you are real serious, mount to your PC and move all contents of your internal/external cards on your pc.
*especially important if formatting both cards (see below)
If you want a REALLY CLEAN install (get rid of ALL the folders on your SD Cards) you could go to Menu > Settings and unmount and format both internal and external.

How can I wipe internal memory?

I was able to completely wipe my internal storage in recovery mode on my sgs2, is there a way to do this on the sgs3? other than manually go to the folders and delete each one?
Please advice
Thanks
May i ask why, this could be potentially fatal for your phone (i assume you realise this)
When installing a new rom there are always folders and files left behind. Cwm was abke to do this before withouth harming our devices. Wondering why the option is not there like in the sgs 2 version of cwm

Performing a factory format using keypad
1. Key in *2767*3855#
2. Finally, SGS3 will be rebooted and factory format.
This will erase everything.. so plz make a backup before this

CWM recovery is the same mounts and storage format what you want .
Standard recovery factory reset and wipe all data is the same .

the only option under mounts and storage is to wipe the external sd card no the internal as before.

[Q] Right now updated from 4.0.3 on 4.0.4, I9100

Hi.
I'v installed new stock rom 4.0.4 XWLQ2 and speedmod rom K3-32. I'v also done the Wipe Data/factory reset and Wipe Dalvik-Cache in recovery mode with speedmod kernel, bevor flashing of the new stock rom.
Everything has run without problems and I could start the phone without problems. But wenn I use the file-browser I can see the old folders and files from all applications that I had on the old 4.0.3 stock rom and just 2GB from internal storage are free. In applications menu I have just the stock Android applications.
Why are the folders and files from old apps steel in the internal storage of the phone and can I delete those folders and files now, without deleting the system files from new 4.0.4 version?
Or should I maybe flash again the 4.0.4 and do something more in the recovery mode bevore flashing of 4.0.4?
Thanks
Format internal sd....this will erase everything on internal sd...so backup pics or anything else important.

Ya in settings or recovery...no need to flash and root again. Just save anything like pics or music...etc...before formatting. Formatting sd doesnt effect system files.

I'v formated in Settings of the phone (format USB storage). Is that the same like format in the recovery mode? And why should I do flash of ROM and root again, is it necessary? My phone is working now very good.
Thanks
Like I said there is no need to flash and root again.

Formatting internal SD card?

Hi, I'm using the Dorimanx Kernel along with the Ressurection Remix ROM and I was wondering, can I format my internal sd card in any way? The latest version has bugged the storage opting in the settings so I can't possibly manage this that way.

When you say format internal storage are you referring to wiping it via rom or recovery?
If recovery have you tried another kernel?
If rom them why not change rom version??
By the way the word you was looking for was "pardon".

Am I automatically required to use the word pardon? Lolwut.
And when I say format internal SDcard then I mean wiping it clean so that only the necessary folders and files are remaining.

Well your internal SD is partitioned. When you wipe data/factory reset teh system partition is returned to default. You could then wipe the card you want to format when mounted via USB in Windows, all needed files would be re-created on fist boot of factory reset system afaik.
Remember to backup what you want to keep like photos/efs backup folder etc etc.
Reboot in recovery, go into "mounts and storage" menu and format the internal SD card.

Nice, thanks! Will this remove any files related to my rom & kernel?
Will this remove any of my important files and will I have to install the rom all over again? Or am I good to go?
Nope, but all your data and settings will be gone. It's like you started your phone for the first time.

Whenever you flash roms you must format all partitions so data isn't left behind. When data is left behind, problems will occur on the rom you just flashed.
If you want to backup your room just make a internal SD backup via nandroid. If you want to restore it later just format all partitions again and go nandroid and choose restore. Your backup should be there.
And you shouldn't format the internal SD card since you lose data. Only format if it becomes corrupt (doesn't mount or work properly).
