2.1 dialer on froyo? - Vibrant Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Is there a way to use an old dailer app on the newer 2.2 roms? It's rediculous how the call logs shows texts and there isnt even an option to show only calls. texts shouldnt be there. Its the call log not the messaging app
Also would using a different app remove the current black/blue theme in the app?

I have been wondering about this for a while also... have not looked in to it tho.
im trying to figure out why i lost my smile face button in sms mode.
Im pretty sureall that has to be done is take the phone.apk out of a 2.1 rom, remove the phone apk form the rom your using and then put the one from the stock rom in.
how ever i have been having a hell of a time figuring out how to even do this ha.
hit me up with a PM if you get this done or have any ideas?

I was wondering about this too. I used call logs fairly often in 2.1 but now its practically pointless.

I'm using 2.2 (Macnut R12) and my call logs only show calls, no texts.

Theres a few options you can choose from, but none of them let you see all calls in one with out having text messages tossed in there (im not longer on macnut just tossing that out there)

Thats because Macnut isnt JK2
It is based on the I9000 ROM
And to answer your question, no. The 2.1 dialer will not work.

Swype settings has option to replace enter key with smiley....

Install Adfree to block adds and you are done.
Personaly I use Handcent. Has a lot conf options.
I use handcent too and didnt see any ads.
I like Handcent too, I think there's only adverts when yo go into the settings menu?
It would be nice to hear of some alternatives though..
4 or 3mb for a sms program I think is to much. I don't care themes and so on, I just want to download the mms' pictures, videos and the ability of send message to multi recipients...
I think I will develop my own sms program...

I fully agre with you. I use Chomp SMS. Its a 5+Mb file consuming about 7-8mb space on installation. Previously I used Handcent which is a bit lower in size- but after upgrade to 2.1 it force closes every time i try to save /add any unknown number (from which an SMS was recd) to my Contacts.
Anyway, will wait for your lightweight SMS/MMS app.

I was started to develop for android devices 2 days ago . The application can send and receive SMS, now I am trying to "call" the contact list to multiple recipes... After that I will start with the MMS support. Once I get this I will release the first beta version.
I am pretty slow coding in java because I have learned it last week, I am a c/c++ developer and I used to hate java

Good news pretty soon. Waiting for your beta release. Meantime I found a lightweight free SMS app (500+kb) in the market. Can have a look if you want. Its called "SMS Composer". The main thing which I liked about it is its Non-threaded conventional type. Messages ordered individually as per date & timewhen they were recd. Its buggy though. Its laggy. Senders' names are not shown in a few SMS from known saved contact numbers. Unknown numbers (from which SMS recd) can't be saved in contact - there is no such option in context menu.

[Q] Anyone know of any work around for MMS

Hey guys, I really want to use JT's froyo aosp as my daily driver, but I can't do without MMS, anyone know a way to have MMS's sent to my e-mail or something similar so that I can view them in that format instead of through the mms app on the phone? In the same fashion, know of a way I can send from an email or something that would get received as an MMS?
I really doubt there's a way to do this for free, but if there is, I'd love to know
go onto your phone and email a phone # to try it. Seems like i remember doing that before. You have to put the 1 in front of area code though.
you can send emails to [email protected] (assuming you have verzion). For example if the persons number was 123-456-7890. You can email [email protected] and they will get it as a mms.

Other carriers:
@txt.att.net
@messaging.sprintpcs.com
@tmomail.net
As far as receiving them, you could just have your friends e-mail pics or whatever to you.
Just got around to reading this now, thank you guys. Anyone know of a more solid fix for the mms? could I possibly make it so mms sent to my phone is sent to my email ?

That won't work in AOSP.
Edit: I just saw you live in Hinesville. You military?
Yes I'm Army, And yes it does work in AOSP, i am running Vinilla froyo AOSP v0.9.3 with a voodoo rom and i was using handcent this morning so what doesnt work? handcent ot mms? if it's mms than there is always the stock mms zip through CWR but i havent tried that yet to see if it works with AOSP or not.

I know the sms portion of handcent works but mms won't. I wish it did, I liked the AOSP rom. It's speedy.
In the sent message settings on handcent it has an option to convert to mms but not until it is 3 or more messages long and i really don't feel like typing that ling to see if it works, but now it looks like i am going to have to put some time and energy into investigating this. thanks for the info, since i have a pretty slow afternoon today i will see if i can find anything out with it. i will post results of my tests here, if i cant get to it before the weekend i will definitely work on it then. You have peaked my curiosity sir, so now i must investigate, I'm kinda OCD that way. any here i thought i was gonna get bored today.
I think it has something to do with how Samsung ties everything to touchwiz. None of the roms without touchwiz - MIUI, CM or AOSP - seem to have working mms.

Best Dialer for Streak

Finally! Someone made a great dialer app where you can make the phone keys huge. No more fiddling around with dialer one to search for a contact when in the car!
Check out angeldialer... it is super fast and free.. and you can make the buttons huge

Been using this for a while after discovering that the stock dialer did not search contacts using the keys as letters - a la HTC.
Not the best looking dialer but very practical.
Ray Dialer is working well on my Streak. Big buttons, T9, contact photos, fast.

Is there a way to completely disable the stock dialer with any of these? I used one a few weeks ago, and when I hung up the phone call, it was on the stock dialer. If I am forced to still see the stock one, I'll just continue to use it... I hate being on the phone as a phone (hence, i buy one i can text on and use for email and internetting), so it's not a big enough problem to use the stock one.
I know you used to be able to make a different dialer the default, but after 2.1 I'm fairly sure you have to remove the stock one completely if you want to replace it. Don't know how to do that though, will have to look around.
I am interested in this too. I installed some custom dialers and some of them are very nice, but I don't like going back to stock dialer after finishing call...
I guess, you can remove stock dialer with Titanium backup (requires root), but I am not sure if you can do that. I guess, you should not remove it.
Don't uninstall phone.apk. I tried that. Had to restore my phone. It's not a funny, haha problem that you can just restore in titanium from a backup. It cripples your phone.

Are there any replacements for phone.apk? I am assuming this is the phone itself, which occasionally crashes on me. Fortunately while hanging up the call most of the time, but still...

Free version only works for incoming calls. Did you run the app and check the settings? I have mine set to go to the home screen after both incoming and outgoing calls and it works. I have tried other options such as last activity.
Yes, that was it. I used the free version.
I found this:

Combining On Call End and Ray Dialer has made me happy.
donalgodon,
Thanks for sharing the free alternative. The return to the phone app after a call is an Android behavior that should be user selectable.
Thanks for the free app suggestion. It works great have mine setup to go back to home page.

[Q] FACTORY Samsung Vibrant sms popup

Does anyone knows the file name for the factory program that makes the sms popup on the Samsung Vibrant? I want to re-install that program to enable sms alerts when a new text is received. No, I don't want an aftermarket sms popup from a different developer so please don't guide me to an aftermarket one. I just want to revert back to factory sms popup for the sms alerts.
Thank you.
Maybe it's been too long since I've run stock but I don't remember that ever being on here other than 3rd party...
Are you sure the Factory stock Vibrant had an sms popup? I don't ever remember it having this.
I use go sms but there is handcent also both are great
Sent from my SGH-T959 using xda premium
I'm sure the Vibrant has a "factory" sms popup function. Before I rooted my phone, it had the ability to turn the screen on and show the sms envelope alerting me I have a text message or it would show the gmail envelope alerting me I have an email. Since I rooted my phone I have to use 'Glance' app which works pretty much like the factory one (YES, I know, but I want the factory one back). There has to be some file name I can find using 'Explorer' app but I can find it. By they way I've been looking into this on my wife's phone which has not been rooted. I know it's there. If I was able to copy the 'battery charging' sound from her phone to mine, I'm sure I can copy that sms popup file as well. Any clues anyone?
Thanks.
I don't understand why rooting your phone would cause you to lose a feature. It shouldn't and doesn't.
I'm a big fan of the stock Touchwiz, and I never remember any SMS popup.
Are you sure you have a USA T-Mobile Vibrant T959? I can't ever remember anything popping up saying you have an SMS. Are you talking about the notification bar? Or maybe NoLEd app found in the market?

That sounds like you're talking about the notification icon, it should be enabled by default but check the settings in your SMS app, there is an option to enable/disable it.
Ok guys, I guess I was not clear enough on what I was trying to explain. What I mean by sms popup is when you get a text message or email the phone screen turns on for about a minute or so and an icon displays on the top left of the notification bar. If anyone knows how to get this stock feature back on the phone please feel free to share that info. After rooting my phone with Axura ROM I lost that feature and the screen does not turn on anymore. I don't want any aftermarket apps I already have 'Glance' which works fine but once I get the stock one back I will get rid of 'Glance' app. Hope this clarifies confusions.
Thanks
kxlling
I have the settings for sms set already to display notification in status bar but to no avail. Axura ROM took that out.
Have you tried replacing the SMS app with one from another ROM? Or just reinstalling it?
I've never had that issue, but I've never tried axura either...
This may be far fetched, but could the theme you're using be washing it out? I've had it happen before where the theme was the same colors and you couldn't see the notifications.
Sounds like you need the touchwiz mms.apk. The stock Android one doesn't support screen on function. You can pull the file from another ROM and push it through or search the apps section for non-blurry mms by explodingboy. He has the files for both 2.2 and 2.3 roms I believe.
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
I'm going to reinstall it and see how it goes. I'm not sure if Axura is washing out the app but I wouldn't doubt it. I'll let you know what happens.
Thanks
I already have Glance. This app works just like the one that came with the phone before rooting. Check it out you might like it.
See if you can find a compatible touchwiz app that works with Axura. Barring that, I suggest you either switch back to a Touchwiz enabled ROM, settle for a third party app solution, or try MIUI. MIUI does not have Touchwiz MMS, but it does have the feature of turning the screen on and/or giving notification updates and/or popup updates when you get texts.
Oh, and you can also theme the ever loving crap out of it. And it's generally wonderful.
You're talking about the so called "toast" notification icon on the status bar. Popup is when you get a message and the message itself pops up in a window over your home/lockscreen or whatever app you're running at that time. Anyways, seriously, I know you said you dont want a aftermarket app and I dont know about Glance or why you won't prefer it over your stock sms/mms app but you should consider installing Handcent SMS. Its very custumizable and has that real "popup" feature I was talking about earlier and its just plain way way better than the stock app and I see no reason whatsoever to not use it over your stock app and best of all its FREE!
Sent from my Bionixly-Blutiful-Vibrant
Thanks everyone for your inputs, I appreciate them. I guess I'll stick with the 'Glance' app, I like the way it works on my phone and I can customize it to however I want.

Themed Dialer/Contacts/Messaging from T-mobile

I take no credit, but figured I'd share.
Links to dark themed dialer, contacts, and messaging
Instructions on installation
Followed this and it worked! I have not tested everything, but dialing out, receiving calls, getting messages and sending messages are all ok. Someone else who tested this method on Verizon mentioned sending pics via messaging was not working, but I did not personally test that.
Also, when I renamed dialer.apk in system/app, my phone was freaking out every two seconds while searching for signal. Made things difficult. I'm guessing if you're in airplane mode, that won't happen.
MAKE SURE TO MAKE A BACK UP OF ALL THE FILES BEING REPLACED. This can't be stressed enough. Either back up the files, or make a nandroid backup.

Yea I don't like the bottom as well. I also noticed that the group message settings isn't there. On the stock version when you get a group message you have 2 tabs at the bottom. One says "Group conversation" and the other says "Individual messages". You could either respond to all or just the one person. I liked that a lot, but this dark version doesn't have that.
